belief,“ said Umri.He said parents of Muslim children in BMC schools were
worried that their wards will be forced to do Suryanamaskar if it is made
mandatory in schools. Asked if Muslim parents would withdraw kids from civic
schools if Suryanamaskar is made mandatory, he refused to reply. TOI

Shankaracharya for
'plebiscite' on both sides of Kashmir
Mathura : Goverdhan
Peethadhishwar Shankaracharya Adhokshjanand Devtirth today favoured
"plebiscite" on both sides of the Kashmir for a "permanent
solution" of the problem. "A
plebiscite under the supervision of United Nations representative and guarded
by forces of United Nations should be held in both sides of the Kashmir,"
he said while talking to reporters in his Ashram here. Shankaracharya said
while "referendum is a time consuming process", there should be

for peace in Kashmir," he said. Referring to his recent visit to Kashmir,
Shankaracharya, said the Kashmiri people complained that their voice was being
"crushed even though they want to stay in India". He said it was the Constitutional
responsibility of the government to listen to people and solve the genuine
demands, even of a handicapped person. "Further attempt to crush the
agitation may not pay dividends as the government is morally bound to listen
genuine problem of its people," he stated. He termed the Jammu and Kashmir
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's statement that only a handful of people were
leading the agitation as baseless, saying "Had it been possible to crush
the handful people by force, the curfew in Kashmir would not have lasted for 50
days". The Shankaracharya said the government should continue dialogue with

said that the organization was trying to create a divide among the employees on
religious lines.Tiwari, however, had a completely different explanation for the
notification. “People have unnecessarily making a fuss over this notification. The
only reason behind issuing this was to decide leaves for workers. There are 25
leaves for a regular employee and the workers who are working on daily wages
and collector rates have 5 leaves. So it was better to notify them on the pre-
decided leaves then to wait before every occasion and announce it,” he said.HT

Turkish army thrusts deeper

Turkey: Turkey's army and
its allies thrust deeper into Syria on Sunday, seizing territory controlled by
Kurdish-aligned forces on the fifth day of a cross-border campaign that a
monitoring group said had killed at least 35 villagers.Turkish warplanes roared
into northern Syria at daybreak and its artillery pounded what security sources
said were sites held by Kurdish YPG militia, after the Syrian Observatory for
Human Rights reported fierce overnight fighting around two villages.Turkey's
military said 25 Kurdish militants were killed in its air strikes. There was no
immediate comment from the YPG, but forces aligned with the Kurdish militia
have said it withdrew from the area targeted by Turkey before the
offensive.Turkish officials have openly stated that their goal in Syria is as
much about ensuring Kurdish forces do not expand the territory they already
control along Turkey's border, as it is about driving Islamic State from its
strongholds. However, Turkey's offensive has so far focused mostly on targeting
forces allied to the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition
that includes YPG, an Observatory source said. SDF has support from the United
States, which sees the group as an effective Syrian ally against Islamic State.
