Report on Dr Zakir Naik:Ex-IPS
officer hints at political involvement
Mumbai: With the Mumbai
Police indicting Zakir Naik after finding him to be allegedly involved in
unlawful activities with possible terror links, ex-IPS officer YP Singh today
alleged this report by the men in uniform is extraneous to the provisions of
law and deviates from the prescribed procedure of filing FIR in such matters. Singh
said if such conspicuous deviations are happening then obviously this is being
governed by some invisible hand, which could be very much political in nature. Pointing
out that nothing of such legal procedures are complied with, ex IPS officer
said these things clearly indicate that there are inherent contradictions in
the entire matter, adding the police should not deviate from such legal
procedures unless and until there is an invisible political hand."153A,
295A means that you are speaking something which is inimical to national
integration, communal harmony. This is a criminal offence, but such offences
are very difficult to prove in the court of law because in this country we have
freedom of speech and expression," said Singh."If somebody wants to
extol his own religion, in that case it doesn't mean that he has committed an
offence. Almost all religious leaders of every religion come out with such
exaggerated statements, but this doesn't mean that they are committing a
criminal offence," he added.ANI
Dr Zakir Naik calls
allegations made by Mumbai Police report that Naik speeches pro-terror, IRF
paid money to lure youth for conversion, false and baseless
Mumbai:In a 71-page report
on Dr Zakir Naik, Mumbai Police have said his IRF paid anything between Rs
25,000 and Rs 50,000 to lure a youth to convert to Islam. On Monday evening,
the Mumbai Police commissioner submitted a report prepared by Special Branch,
the intelligence wing of the Mumbai Police, to the state home department. In
response to reports, a statement released on behalf of Dr Naik called the
allegations false and baseless. “Dr Zakir Naik or IRF has not received any
notice from the MHA or any govt al agency as of now, and hence we’re unable to
comment on it. IRF is a research body that promotes greater awareness of Islam
and its tenets…Dr Zakir Naik emphasises on teachings of Islam, which is not
unconstitutional, and preaching and propagating one’s religion is allowed by
Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.” Sources said the SB studied speeches,
sermons and literature prepared by the IRF and the report found these to be
“pro-terror” and “influencing vulnerable minds”. An officer said the SB’s
inquiry concentrated on speeches made by Naik, as available on the Internet. No
member of the IRF or any other NGO run by Naik was questioned. “As the mandate
of the probe was to find out if the speeches were influencing the youth to join
terror, we only concentrated on the speeches,” said a source.“It will not be
wrong to say that Muslim youths are being attracted towards the ideology
promoted by Dr Zakir Naik, or his religious teaching have fanned religious sentiments
of Muslim youths,” says the report in Marathi. “Prima facie certain comments by
Dr Naik justifies terrorists and terrorist activities of some organisations,”
it adds. The report also observes that Naik “promoted religious conversions”
through his oratory on the supremacy of Islam. “By way of his oratory skills,
Dr Naik creates prejudices in the mind of people by asserting how other holy
books of the other religions and their beliefs are wrong… His statements are
against religious harmony and peaceful coexistence…His focus is on to prove how
Islam is the only supreme religion…He spreads religious animosity. Once
listeners are attracted towards him, he justifies terrorism and fans religious
sentiments of Muslim youths with the help of his oratory skills,” the report
reads. It also states that the law and judiciary department should be consulted
to find out if his speeches could be banned.“Some statements are certainly
against religious tolerance and promote chauvinism and Islamic supremacy.Hence, prima
facie it is certain that his speeches should be banned in Maharashtra,” it report.Indianexpress

In Bharuch, a family with

Bharuch:A village in
Gujarat’s Surat district has hit the spotlight for being the birthplace of late
Sheikh Ahmed Deedat, the mentor of Zakir Naik. Tadkeshwar in Surat district is
home to a famous Mahadev temple and has one of the oldest madrasas, Darul Uloom
Falah-e-Darain. It is here that Deedat was born in 1918, before he migrated to
South Africa at the age of 9. Naik has acknowledged the role of Deedat in his
life and has admitted in interviews that he was “trained by him”. Naik’s
official website lists the deceased Deedat as an “international orator” at IRF
in India.About 40 km from Tadkeshwar, seated in their luxurious bungalow at
Ankleshwar in Bharuch, Deedat’s extended family — grandnephew Ghulam Ali, 68,
and his son Mohammed, 42, who is a local BJP functionary — are discreet about
their association with the preacher, but speak with pride about their family
patriarch’s brush with fame in the Middle East and US.They say they are not in
“regular” touch with Deedat’s family that has moved to South Africa, although
Mohammed met Ahmed Deedat’s son, Yousuf, who is a preacher himself, during his
last visit to Durban. indianexpress

AP:2 Dalits tied to tree,
stripped, beaten by cow vigilantes
Vijayawada: 2 Dalit brothers were allegedly tied to a
coconut tree, stripped and thrashed for skinning a dead cow in Andhra Pradesh,
in a redux of the outrageous attack last month in Gujarat that has pivoted
protests and a huge political controversy for the central govt. On Monday in
Amalapuram, Mokati Elisa and his brother Lazar were hired to skin a cow that
had died of electrocution, the police said. While they were on the job, the
brothers were attacked by around 100 "gau-rakshaks" or cow vigilantes
who arrived at the spot accusing them of stealing and killing the animal. Cow was
electrocuted while grazing, said a senior police officer. Its owner, a
vegetable vendor, had hired the brothers to skin it.The brothers are in
hospital; one of them is reportedly critical.NDTV

Dalit girl attacked by
priest in UP for trying to draw water from temple well
Amid reports of atrocities
against the Dalit community, a minor girl and her father were beaten up by a
temple priest in Gunnaur in UP's Sambhal district when the girl tried drawing
water from the temple well. 13-year-old was denied water by the priest due to
her Dalit status. After the father confronted the priest over the issue, he was
attacked with a trident. A few followers of the priest also joined in the
attack against the family. The police have launched an investigation and also
arrested the accused. A case was registered against the priest under SC and ST
Act after family protested. This is the 2nd incident against Dalits
since PM Modi's speech when he first broke his silence against the self-styled

Dadri lynching: FIR against
Akhlaq’s family a conspiracy? The Quint investigative report
FIR against Akhlaq and his
family for cow slaughter has raised several questions. This FIR was registered
almost 10 months after Akhlaq’s murder. To find out more about the complainant
and the witnesses mentioned in the FIR, The Quint revisited Bisada village in
Dadri. Our investigation reveals that the complainant did not witness the
incident. He filed FIR on the hearsay of 3 villagers. Moreover, the eyewitness
Prem Singh, who allegedly saw Akhlaq and his family slaughtering a calf, is the
uncle of Sanjay Rana and the father of Vishal Rana, one of the accused arrested
for Akhlaq’s murder. Not only this, Sanjay Rana – who claims to be a former BJP
worker – has the upper hand, since he controls the witnesses and the
complainant. The Quint in its earlier report mentioned Rana’s alleged personal
grudge against Akhlaq and his involvement in the latter’s murder. So did Rana
orchestrate this FIR against Akhlaq’s family with the help of his
relatives/neighbours? Did he concoct a cow slaughter complaint to save his son
from indictment?
Gujarat: Forced out, Dalits
are refugees 15 km from home
Sodapur: Priyanka Meghwa
was in Class X when she was forced to give up school in her village in Ghada.
At her new home 15 km away, with nothing much to do, the 15-year-old spends
time watching television. Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, a soap celebrating
daughters, and Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke are her favourite shows, she says. Two
years ago, Priyanka’s family was among the 27 Dalit families who were forced to
move to Sodapur from Ghada, both villages in the Deesa taluka of Banaskantha,
the potato capital of Gujarat. All of them victims of untouchability, now
refugees in their own state, which saw Dalit anger boiling over last month
following the public flogging in Una of youths for skinning dead cattle. At the
entrance to Deesa, near Agriculture Produce Market Committee building, a huge
potato installation welcomes you. Deesa is also where Canadian food giant
McCain sources its potatoes from. Large potato cold storages dot the way to
Sodapur. On one side of the road that cuts through the village, stand rows of
shacks covered with asbestos and lined with tarpaulin. This is the home of the
Dalits from Ghada. Across the road, lives the rest of the village. The practice
of “extreme untouchability”, the Dalits claim, led to the murder of one of them
nine years ago, forcing them to first sit in protest outside the local revenue
official’s office for five years after which they came to Sodapur, leaving
behind 100 bighas of land where they grew potatoes, castor, wheat, groundnut,
bajra and rapeseed. indianexpress

PM Modi’s remark that 80%
gau rakshaks are fake should have been avoided: RSS
Nagpur: A day after its
general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi echoed PM Narendra Modi in condemning
activities of “a handful of opportunistic people who in the name of cow
protection” are trying to “poison social harmony”, RSS said Modi should have
avoided the remark that such people constitute 80% of gau rakshaks in the
country. It also said the “RSS has always espoused the cause of gau raksha”. PM had
asked state govts to prepare a dossier on “those who consider themselves great
gau rakshaks” and then said that “70-80% are involved in activities which have
no place in society and they, therefore, don the mantle of gau rakshaks to hide
their ills”. A day later, speaking in Telangana, Modi again referred to “fake
cow protectors” but this time he called them a “handful”. RSS spokesperson
Manmohan Vaidya said:“80% remark should have been avoided but the PM later made
amends at Hyderabad, saying only a handful of so-called gau rakshaks were fake.
And as regards why issue a statement after the Dalit flogging, it should not be
seen as a caste or religion issue. RSS has always espoused the cause of gau
raksha.”Asked about the angry response of the VHP to the PM’s remark, Vaidya
said: “All RSS-inspired organisations are autonomous and are free to express
their own assessment and opinion.”The wording of Joshi’s statement Sunday
highlights the RSS dilemma. On the one hand, it wants to be seen to be with the
PM on the issue and, on other, it tries to echo the sentiments of swayamsevaks
by striking a different tone on the number of “fake” gau rakshaks. indianexpress

Indian population growth
less dependent on religion, more on development: study
Fertility rates in India
are more closely related to education levels and the socio-economic development
within a state, than to religious beliefs, according to an IndiaSpend analysis
of govt data and research evidence. The
evidence we analyze shows that richer families, states with better health
facilities and higher female literacy have lower fertility rates in India.
Globally, there is little evidence to link religion and fertility rates, with
poorer, conflict-ridden states and countries with lower female empowerment
reporting higher population growth rates. When the office of the Registrar
General and Census Commissioner of India released fertility rates for the
Indian population last year, the conversation was hijacked by the difference in
population growth rates across religions.Several papers emphasized that the
data showed that Muslim women had higher fertility rates than non-Muslims, and
that the percentage of Muslims in population was steadily growing.IANS

jocular vein, making up a story about wanting to go to ‘sanyaas’. Not
satisfied, the man asked Ahmed his name, says the report. Ahmed, sensing the
man’s mindset, replied that his name was Ragul – a Hindu name. Ahmed then asked
the man why he was so angry. The response was shocking.“He said because they
have ruined everything and continue to, the bastards…and every time I see a

Ankara - European Union is
making serious mistakes in its response to Turkey's failed coup and is losing
support for EU membership from Turks as a result, Turkey's foreign minister
said on Wednesday. Mevlut Cavusoglu said

Palestine’, says petition – but truth is far more complicated : Independent UP

criticised Google for removing Palestine from Google Maps. problem is that it
never happened. Palestine, like other contested territories, has had a
difficult time on the world’s most popular mapping tool. But it hasn’t just
been removed – it never really existed on there in the first place. The recent
outrage was sparked by a petition and a hashtag – #PalestineIsHere – that said
that Google was “making itself complicit in the Israeli govt’s ethnic cleansing
of Palestine” by removing it from the map. independent

US-backed SDF retakes almost all of Manbij
from ISIL
US-backed opposition
fighters have almost recaptured all of Manbij, a Syrian city northeast of
Aleppo, from the ISIL.With the support of air strikes, Syrian Democratic
Forces, or SDF, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, has taken control of
90% of the city from ISIL. Manbij has been the main front in a US-led anti-ISIL
coalition's ground war for months.Al Jazeera filmed exclusive aerial footage
that shows extensive damage in the city, with many homes and other buildings
either partially or completely destroyed. At least 400 people have been killed
in the area in the past 2 months.Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human
Rights, a group that uses a network of contacts in Syria to track the war, said
at the end of July that those killed included 98 children. The apparent victory
in Manbij came as the UN called for urgent aid access to Aleppo, warning that
civilians there were at grave risk from severe water shortages and disease
after fighting intensified for Syria's second city. Fears are growing for
trapped civilians before what is expected to be an all-out battle for control
of the city, a focal point of the five-year war.Rebels and fighters loyal to
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have sent reinforcements to Aleppo in
anticipation of the fighting, after opposition forces broke a govt siege at the weekend and vowed to capture the
entire city. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain inside Aleppo, once
Syria's economic heart.UN agencies said on Tuesday that up to two million
people had gone without running water for four days, raising the risks of
disease in a city already devastated by years of fighting.UNICEF said children
and families were facing "a catastrophic situation" after fighting
damaged electricity networks needed to pump water. aljazeera
