Ahead of Independence Day
celebrations, 'police' raid Jamia Milia hostels: Students see a dangerous
pattern
Hundreds of students
gathered outside the main campus of Jamia Milia Islamia in New Delhi on
Saturday and shouted slogans against the Delhi police and the University
administration. The students alleged that Special Cell of the Delhi police and
some officials in the civil dress barged into the hostel campus of the
University and started shooting videos on the afternoon of Saturday. This came
after hostel residents of the University purported that during a raid the night
before, hostel officials had warned them of an NIA raid in their residential
complex in the wake of Independence Day celebration. The students who had
gathered to protest in Delhi on the campus alleged that at 2 PM on Saturday,
two cars with black shields entered the hostel premises and started clicking
pictures and shooting videos. When the students asked 'who they were', the
"officials" said they had the permission to do so from University
authorities. However, when contacted, the official of the institution merely
termed it as a rumour. Mehtab Alam, proctor at the University said, “This was a
routine check carried out by us before Independence Day, we did this before
Republic day too but there was no police involvement in it." But later a
PTI report quoted university official confirming that it was routine
verification by the police and also officials of the Delhi police confirming
the news. Protesting students questioned this surveillance and termed it as a
violation of their right to privacy and also pointed out at how the government
at the Centre is suspecting students of being involved in anti-national
activities just because it happens to be a minority institution. A scholar on
conditions of anonymity told Firstpost, "We couldn’t sleep the entire
night as we were told that there might be some raid in the hostel, it sent
chill down our spines and we were reminded of what happened with the University
students in the aftermath of Batla house encounter. Everyday someone was picked
up from the University. All sort of thoughts came to our minds, a scholar
cannot deliver in such pressures time and again.”Another student of the
University, seemingly exasperated, questioned the legitimacy of such raids by
police inside the campus. "Police are not allowed to enter the University
premises. It is the duty of the internal security of the University to ensure
law and order situation. Are we terrorists studying here at Jamia Millia that
police has come inside the hostel and is shooting videos? How can the
university allow that to happen?"Interestingly, a few students of the
University also claimed that a notice was put earlier in the year, mentioning
that Jamia is the prime target of terrorist groups operating in India. This was
not the first raid of its kind to happen in a university, ever since NDA-led
BJP govt has assumed power. It has remained in a continuous tussle with the
students' community all over the country. Students at the University of
Hyderabad and JNU have also complained of such patrolling by police personnel
in the campuses on more than one occasion.Meanwhile, students at Jamia have
decided a sit-out demanding suspension of the proctor and the provost and also
have asked the vice-chancellor of the University to address them immediately.
Firstpost tried to reach the V-C but his phone went unanswered. Firstpost

publisher of Outlook group, Indranil Roy, announcing the appointment of Rajesh
Ramachandran as the Editor-in-Chief with effect from August 16. Ramachandran
moves to Outlook from the Economic Times where he was Political Editor.Roy
asked the staff to welcome Ramachandran and extend him their full support. The
email did not mention the outgoing Editor-in-Chief Krishna Prasad. The top-level
editorial change in the magazine comes close on the heels of the publication of
an investigative report called ‘Operation #BabyLift’. Published on July 29, the
report by freelance journalist Neha Dixit documented how the RSS violated laws
to traffic 31 tribal girls from Assam to Punjab and Gujarat to ‘Hinduise’
them. The women's wing of the RSS issued a press release calling the report
“totally baseless, false and defaming the organisation”.On August 4, a First

the publisher, editor and reporter. The complaint was filed by Subhash Chandra
Kayal, Assistant Solicitor General of India at Guwahati High Court, Bijon
Mahajan, a lawyer and BJP spokesperson and Mominul Awwal of the BJP’s minority

‘KFC serving non-Halal chicken’ : A police
complaint filed against the company
http://muslimmirror.com/eng/kfc-serving-non-halal-chicken-alleges-journalist-files-police-complaint/
Hyderabad: According to an
independent investigation carried out by Bhopal based journalist Anam Ibrahim,
KFC is duping customers by serving non-halal chicken and using fake Halal
certificates. Ibrahim got an inkling of the alleged fraud when he visited a KFC
outlet in DB Mall, Bhopal where he asked the outlet manager about the chicken
being Halal or not. In response he was shown a photocopy of a halal certificate
issued by Mufti Anwar Khan of Mumbai to Venky’s Company. Noticing that the
certificate did not mention KFC’s name Ibrahim inquired further, upon which he
was told that the Venky’s Company supplies chicken to KFC and hence he is being
shown Venky’s certificate. When Ibrahim enquired with Venky’s company they
informed him clearly that their tie-up with KFC has ended three years ago. He
then contacted Mufti Anwar Khan in Mumbai who told him that he had given halal
certificate to Venky’s Company of Chennai which slaughters 1000 chicken in Pune
daily.Anam Ibrahim investigated further to find out from where it is procuring
its chicken since last three years. Ibrahim claims to have discovered that its
procuring non-halal chicken from Godrej Company in Mumbai. Ibrahim told
MuslimMirror.com that his claims are based on a thorough investigation which
also includes sting operations. On 06-08-2016 a written complaint has been filed
at MP Nagar police station (Bhopal) by Ibrahim along with eight other people
against KFC. The deliberation of the case is being carried out by CSP Bharti
Indu Sharma. In complaint Ibrahim has alleged that slaughter houses using
machines for slaughter have been given halal certificates by Muftis whereas for
a slaughter to be halal it has to be done by hand.Speaking to MuslimMirror.com
Ibrahim informed that he and his associates intend to file a petition against
KFC in court within next few days.Protesting against KFC and demanding its shut
down in India and world over they have written to PM Narendra Modi, External

Moulavi Haneef spoke of
Islam, not terror: widespread anger in Kerala against arresting
Kozhikode: The arrest of
Mohammed Haneef alias Haneef Moulavi, a former at the Salafi masjid in
Kalikkadavu in Kasaragod, for alleged terror links has come as a shock for the
mosque committee and for those who know him personally. Moulavi was picked from
Kallikandi in Kannur district, where he has been working as the Khatib. He was
employed in the Salafi masjid in Kalikkadavu, run by the official faction of
the Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) for about one year. It is learnt that
Moulavi was arrested on a complaint filed by Abdul Majeed, the father of Ashfaq
Majeed, one of the member of the group that fled Kasargod in early June and is
suspected to have joined the IS."Haneef Maulavi has no links with any
extremist group. In his Khutubas (sermons) he spoke only about the
religion," said T P Muhammdali Haji, the custodian of the mosque. "I
used to stay in the mosque during the whole month of Ramadan and I did not find
any stranger visiting Moulavi," he added.Haji said Moulavi left
Kalikkadavu mosque as he was offered a better salary by some others. "He
chose the Kallikandi mosque, which is closer to his house in Wayanad, as his
wife was pregnant," Haji said. The parents of the other youths who
disappeared from Kasaragod too could not believe that that the Moulavi has
links with terrorists. "The parents of Dr Ijas and Shiaz told me that they
have not an iota of doubt about Moulavi. Mumbai police had called Dr Ijaz's
father to know whether he has any complaints against the Moulavi and he had
replied in the negative," said BC Abdrehman, local leader of the IUML in
Padne. The youth went to the mosque at Kalikkadavu after they were prevented
from entering the Salafi mosque at Padne following frequent arguments.
"Haneef Moulavi used to recite the Quran beautifully and his speech was
marvellous. He had not conducted any classes exclusively for the youth nor has
he attended any of their programmes. How could he be made an accused in the
case?" asked Abdurehman. He said there was widespread anger brewing
against Majeed for 'falsely' implicating the Moulavi. "People here believe
that Majeed named Moulavi at the instance of the Mumbai police,"
Abdurehman said. He said that it was wrong to conclude that the youth who left
the country are Salafis.TOI

Atif, MBA convicted of
storing AK-56 released on bail; Bombay HC casts serious doubts over recovery
Mumbai: Raising serious
doubts over the prosecution case of a recovery of AK-56 at his instance, the
Bombay high court suspended the 10-year jail term of Atif Mulla, convicted
under the charges of POTA in the case of blasts in 2002-2003 at Mumbai Central,
Vile Parle and Mulund. Hearing his bail application on Thursday, a division
bench of Justices Abhay Oka and Amjad Sayed ordered Mulla's release on a bail
of Rs 1.50 lakh and surety of the same amount. It has also asked him to deposit
the Rs 1.15 lakh fine ordered by the trial court and cautioned him not to
indulge in any illegal activities or leave the country. While releasing him on
bail, the high court observed that there were "serious doubts" about
the claim that police had recovered an AK-56 and 28 live cartridges at his
instance.A special court in April 2016 sentenced 10 accused, including Atif Nasir
Mulla for their involvement in the bomb blasts case that had claimed lives of
13 people.Mulla, an MBA from Padgha in Maharashtra was acquitted of charges of
conspiracy to cause bomb blasts but was sentenced 10 years rigorous
imprisonment for alleged recovery of Ak-56 at his instance. He was arrested on
April 15, 2003 and was released on bail by Bombay High Court in 2005. He was
however jailed again after the verdict of special court this year.Advocate
Mubin Solkar who argued for Mulla before high court expressed satisfaction and
said “We are happy that high court appreciated our points. There were many
loopholes in the prosecution case and trial court had not considered defence’s
argument during trial. The recovery of AK 56 was planted on Mulla to implicate
him”.During the argument Solkar pointed out many contradictions, irregularities
in the witness’s testimony and said that the conviction was based on faulty
appreciation of evidence by trial court. The high court accepted Solkar’s
argument, raised doubts over recovery and suspended Mulla’s sentence. With this
bail he became the third convict in the case to get bail from high
court.TwoCircles

Kolkata: The

necessity to have the basic knowledge of Arabic, Urdu and Persian was first
realised after the Khagragh Blast incident in West Bengal’s Birbhum district in
2014. NIA, which was handed over the responsibility to investigate the
incident, faced problems when they stumbled upon large amount of literature in
Persian, Urdu and Arabic language.“After Khagragh blast in 2014 a large number
of pamphlets and literature were recovered which were in Urdu and Arabic
language. At that time we faced a lot of problems as our officers working at
the ground level hardly had any knowledge of these languages.PTI

Owaisi dares Opposition
parties for open debate on Dalits and Muslims
Lucknow: AIMIM president
and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has dared the major political parties to hold
'Open Debate' on different issues related to Dalits and Muslims. "Instead
of labeling me as communal and anti-national, why not SP, BSP, Congress and BJP
sit for an open debate on the issues faced by the people especially Dalits and
Muslims. Either they should join me in open debate or I would come alone in
their meetings for the debate," said Owaisi while addressing State Level
AIMIM workers conference here today. Apart from political issues, AIMIM Chief
presented statistics based on census 2011 on educational status of Muslim
community in UP while targeting SP govt.Owaisi claimed as per census data the
literacy rate of Muslim in UP has gone down. In 2001, it was 58% which came
down by 2 per cent to 56 per cent. SP promised to create an educational hub in
the state where is that hub, are they going to show it to all with a magic
wand. If I question on this I am labeled as communal. "If Lohia ji would
have been alive, he must have said that AIMIM is working on his thoughts not
SP," he added. Not sparing Muslim leadership in other political parties, he
said Azam Khan, Naseemuddin Siddiqui, Ghulam Nabi Azad, etc. are not the
leaders of Muslims but they are the 'dealers' who arranges the Muslim vote-bank
for their respective parties. Muslims and Dalits were betrayed on all fronts by

Gujarat Yatra Is Bringing
Dalits, Muslims Together in Shared Anger
Koth (Gujarat): Ever since
the communal riots of 2002, the factor of religion has camouflaged caste and
class conflict and their issues in Gujarat. It was not till the Parmars,
Vaghelas and Mewanis woke up to find their names in FIRs along with the
Muslims, that they cried betrayal. However, the Dalit-Muslim unity that has
come to the fore through the recent Dalit Asmita Yatra was not forged in a day.
The leaders behind the on-going Dalit movement have a story to tell.In the
aftermath of the riots, Ahmedabad Municipal Transport System fired 3,000 bus drivers and conductors.
Musabhai Abdulbhai Khatumbara was one of them. Musabhai is today the man
responsible for Gujarat’s Muslim community joining the movement in support of
the Dalits.“My brother was a victim of the riots” the 40-year-old Mushabhai
recalls. “A foreman in a garage, his life changed the night the police along
with some vigilantes picked him from our residence in Sarkhej. Ever since, he
has been arrested many times and criminal cases were filed against him.”“Later
they were released on bail only to be slammed with an exile order,” he
narrates. So the memories of the riots are still fresh. But doesn’t the fact that many Dalits were the foot
soldiers of 2002 still rankle with Muslims? “Woh Muslims ko murda gay ke naam
pe marte aur Dalits ko zinda gay ke naam pe marte hain,” he responds after a pause.
(They kill Muslims in the name of dead cows and Dalits in the name of live
cows).“The BJP in the state has pitted the Dalits against the Muslims, while
the higher caste people have been orchestrating such a strategy. The truth is
both the communities are marginalised and exploited,” he adds. thewire

PIL in SC for action
against cow vigilantes for violent acts against Dalits, minorities
New Delhi:A petition has
been filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and some states
to take action against so-called cow vigilantes, who are allegedly spreading
violence and committing atrocities against Dalits and minorities. PIL, filed by
Congress activist Tehseen S Poonawalla, said the violence committed by these
‘Gau Raksha’ groups have reached to such proportions that even PM Narendra Modi
recently declared them as people who are “destroying the society”. It alleged
these groups were committing atrocities against Dalits and minorities in the
name of protection of cows and other bovines and they needed to be “regulated
and banned in the interest of social harmony, public morality and law and order
in the country”. “Menace caused by the so-called cow protection groups is
spreading fast to every nook and corner of the country and is creating
disharmony among various communities and castes,” the petition said.It also
sought a direction to remove the alleged “violent content” uploaded on social
media and hosted by the cow protection groups. The plea sought to declare as
“unconstitutional” section 12 of the Gujarat Animal Prevention Act, 1954,
Section 13 of Maharashtra Animal Prevention Act, 1976, and Section 15 of
Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964, which
provide for protection of persons acting in good faith under the Act or
rules.“These laws and the protection granted therewith act as a catalyst to
violence perpetrated by these vigilante groups,” it said. PTI
