INX media case: Chidambaram sent to Tihar jail
till Sept.19, says 'worried about economy'
The special CBI court today sent former Union finance
minister P Chidambaram to judicial custody till Sept.19 in connection with the
INX media case. Chidambaram has already spent 15 days in CBI custody. He will
now be sent to Tihar jail in the national capital. Earlier in the day, the
Supreme Court had refused to grant ex Union minister pre-arrest bail in INX
Media case. In partial relief to Chidambaram and his son Karti, a Delhi court,
earlier today, granted father-son duo anticipatory bail in the cases lodged by
CBI and ED in Aircel-Maxis case. Granting relief, Special Judge O P Saini
directed them to join the probe in the cases. “In event of arrest, they can be
released on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety of like amount. The
accused are directed to join the investigation,” the court said. Moments after
he was sent to 14-day judicial custody, Chidambaram expressed his worry about
the state of economy. “I am only worried about the economy,” he said when asked
to comment on Delhi court’s order.indianexpress

NRC’s 120-day appeal deadline may be revised
120-day appeal deadline set for those excluded
from NRC list may be revised given the delays involved with securing NRC data
and the issue of certified copies of exclusion. Before publication of the final
NRC, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had announced that the provision to appeal
exclusion before Foreigners’ Tribunal would be extended from 60 days to 120
days. However, these 120 days were to be counted from the date of publication
of final list i.e.Aug31.However,MHA sources said that given the directions of
the Supreme Court to NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela to secure the NRC data
first, the process of issuing certified copies of exclusion to those not
included in the list is likely to be delayed. This could jeopardise the chances
of those excluded of having a fair shot at justice. Certified copy of exclusion
would be necessary for anyone willing to challenge their exclusion from NRC in FT.
The document will mention the reasons for his exclusion and give details of the
documents that were not considered good enough to prove his legacy.

'Can a stone do this?': Family of Srinagar youth
who died refutes police version: The Wire
Srinagar: Family of the young student from
Srinagar’s Elahibagh locality who passed away contested claims by security
forces that the cause of death was a “stone injury”. They say that Asrar Ahmad
had been battling for his life for a month in a city hospital after being hit
by pellets.“The forces targeted my son with pellets without any provocation. He
had pellet injuries on his face, skull and left eye,” said Firdous Ahmad Khan,
Asrar’s father.A Class 11 student, Asrar succumbed to his injuries late on
Tuesday evening at SKIMS, Valley’s premier hospital. He was buried the next
morning in a local graveyard, hours after authorities reimposed restriction in
Downtown Srinagar to prevent protests.According to his friends and family, the
18-year-old boy was injured on the evening of August 6, when paramilitary
forces hit him with pellets while he was playing with friends outside his
house. Asrar’s father Firdous showed The Wire photographs and medical records,
including an x-ray scan and hospital registration card, to prove that his son
died of pellet injuries. One of the pictures, taken while Asrar was in hospital,
shows multiple pellet injuries on his face. X-ray also confirms that multiple
pellets had hit Asrar on his head, skull, face and left eye.On his registration
card issued at 6:46 pm on Aug 6 at SKIMS, time of his admission, the doctors
have written that Asrar has “multiple pellets on head, eye…”“He had 3 pellets
in his left eye – 2 of them were removed during a surgery at Bemina hospital.
He was later shifted back to SKIMS,” said Firdous.ADG of J&K police Muneer Ahmad Khan rejected the allegations
that Asrar was targeted by security forces. He said the young boy had been “hit
by a stone”. While the family said the hospital hasn’t yet issued Ahmad’s death
certificate, a senior doctor at SKIMS, who wished not to be named, confirmed
that he had received multiple pellet injuries. “There were pellets in his head
and face,” the doctor said.the wire

Kashmir lockdown: Stories of torture and
arbitrary arrests : aljazeera
Srinagar:A month since India's powerful Home
Minister Amit Shah announced the removal of the Kashmir region's special
status, thousands have been detained, with some alleging torture by Indian
security forces. In a village in southern Kashmir, a 22-year-old man said he
was picked up in a midnight raid and tortured for more than an hour along with
a dozen other Kashmiris."I was beaten with sticks, rifle butts and they
kept asking me why I went for a protest march. I kept telling them that I
didn't, but they didn't stop. After I fainted, they used electric shocks to
revive me," he told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity."Once they
realised I was innocent, they wanted me to name a stone-pelter. I told them, I
don't know anyone. So, they continued beating and electrocuting me. They wanted
all of us to give the names of stone-pelters."They began pulling my beard
and even tried to put it on fire. Then, someone hit me on the head and I
fainted. It is then they, perhaps, realised that I might die. So, they asked my
friend to take me home. I regained consciousness after 2 days and it's been 20
days and I still can't walk properly," he said.Al Jazeera reached out to
Indian army spokesperson for their response, but did not receive any until the
time of the publication of this article.Nearly 30km away, residents in another
village said they witnessed one of the worst crackdowns by the security
forces.A young man in his late 20s was badly beaten and is still not able to
walk without support. He had bruises all over his body. In some places, the
skin had come off, making it extremely painful for him to even rest. This man
also refused to be identified for fear of reprisal. Al Jazeera

Pakistan says UAE, Saudi support its stand on
Kashmir. Truth says otherwise
Contrary to Pakistan's claims that both UAE and
Saudi Arabia support its stand on the issue of Kashmir, UAE Minister for
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Bin
Sultan Al Nahyan made it clear to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood
Qureshi that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Pakistan PM
Imran Khan on Wednesday discussed Kashmir situation with visiting foreign
ministers and insisted that the two countries along with the world should play
a role in urging India to reverse its recent decision on Kashmir. Islamabad,
however, failed to take their support on its position on J&K.Insisting that
the Muslim world not be dragged into it, UAE minister urged that Kashmir dispute
need to be resolved through dialogue and talks between Pakistan and India
only.Islamabad termed both Saudi and UAE ministers' visit as successful,
especially with reference to the support Pakistan seeks from the Muslim world
against India on Kashmir and also maintained that the joint visit was utilised
in highlighting the situation in J&K."Pakistan has claimed that both
the countries have confirmed their "complete support against India on the
Kashmir issue". indiatoday

'Our Identity is at Stake': In Kashmir,
Shopkeepers Refuse to Open Despite Easing of Restrictions
Srinagar:A month after India withdrew contested
Kashmir's autonomy, locked it down with thousands of additional troops and made
mass arrests, residents are resisting attempts by authorities to show some
signs of normalcy returning in the Muslim-majority valley.Officials in J&K's
summer capital Srinagar say that 90 per cent of Kashmir valley is free of
restrictions on daytime movement, some landline phone connections have been
restored and thousands of schools have re-opened. However, checkpoints remain
in place and communication restrictions make reporting from the region
difficult.Despite the partial relaxation, an informal but widespread boycott by
students, shopkeepers and public and private sector workers is taking place
across the valley, aimed at protesting against New Delhi, according to
interviews with seven Govt officials and dozens of residents of the
valley."For us, our identity is at stake and its safeguarding is our
priority," said Shabir Ahmad, shopkeeper from the old quarter, or
downtown, Srinagar. The informal civil disobedience movement has sprung up
alongside small but regular street protests by stone-throwing crowds that have
been quickly quashed by security forces with tear gas and pellet guns. Reuters

Misinformation being spread on J&K, says top
Kashmiri-American body
Asserting that Articles 370 and 35A of Indian
constitution allowed a breeding ground for armed violence in J&K, a top
Kashmiri-American body on Wednesday alleged that a group of propaganda-mongers
are spreading misinformation and confusion about the abrogation of these
provisions.“There has been a tremendous amount of confusion, misinformation,
and fear being disseminated by propaganda-mongers and ill-informed press about
the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A by Govt of India,”influential Kashmiri
Overseas Association (KAO) said. While it is human nature to condemn any
injustice, like loss of internet and phone lines to the people living in the
Kashmir valley, it is also prudent to understand the implication of these
articles that shaped the destiny of “us minorities of the region over the last
70 years”, said US-based organisation, representing the Kashmiri diaspora.Temporary
articles 370 and 35A were highly discriminatory against all indigenous Kashmiri
minorities — Sufi Muslims, Shia Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims, Dalits, Gujjars,
Kashmiri Hindus (known as Kashmiri Pandits), Kashmiri Sikhs, and Buddhists, it
said, adding that only the majority, Sunni Muslims, were privileged to benefit
from this provision.“Article 370 and 35A allowed a breeding ground for armed
violence in Kashmir,” KAO said.PTI

SC fixes pleas of Kashmir Times editor, others
for hearing on Sep 16
New Delhi :The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed
for hearing on September 16 pleas of the Kashmir Times Editor and others on
alleged communication blockade in J&K.Anuradha Bhasin, Executive Editor of
Kashmir Times, told a bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi that even after a month
of scrapping of Article 370, journalists were “not allowed to move freely in
the state”. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that editors
of Kashmir Times chose not to publish their newspaper from Srinagar. At the
outset, advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for the journalist, submitted that
the Editor-in-chief of Kashmir Times travelled to many parts of the state and
according to him, the situation was such that media cannot work due to
“communication restrictions”.She said it was not clear as to on what basis
there is a “communication blockade” which has resulted in the information
blackout. The advocate claimed that during the Editor-in-chief’s interaction
with the people, one of the doctors spoke about the humanitarian
medico-crisis.The editor also alleged that it is difficult to travel beyond
Srinagar and journalists are finding it difficult to report. While she was
making the submissions, some of the lawyers said they have filed a caveat in
the matter and submitted that the petition of Bhasin was not maintainable. However,
bench concluded the hearing in the matter by asking the parties to complete
formalities of filing counter-affidavit and replies and posted the matter for
final disposal on Sept.16.However, the court said it was not going to entertain
the writ petition filed by Congress activist and businessman Tehseen Poonawalla
seeking removal of restrictions in Kashmir Valley and made it clear that he can
only make his stand clear as an intervener in the petition filed by Bhasin.PTI

‘Concubine-like life’: Rajasthan Human Right
Commission seeks law against live-in relationships
Jaipur: Rajasthan State Human Right Commission
(SHRC) has equated life of a woman in a live-in relationship with a “concubine”
while asking the state Govt to bring in a law against live-in relationships.
The order by SHRC chairperson Prakash Chandra Tatia, ex Chief Justice of
Jharkhand High Court, and SHRC member Mahesh Chandra Sharma, a former Rajasthan
High Court judge, said that “Right to Life” in Article 21 of the Indian
Constitution translates into “an honourable life, not an animal-like
life.”“From no viewpoint can a concubine-like life of a woman be called a
dignified life. Hence, for a woman to sacrifice her honourable life and adopt a
dishonourable life in the form of a concubine, is not right to life. By
demanding such a life, women can’t protect their fundamental rights,” SHRC
said.SHRC delivered the order after 2 women had approached it in 2017 regarding
a live-in relationship. To protect their privacy, details of their cases were
not disclosed in the order. Citing ‘Protection of Domestic Violence Act 2005’,
SHRC said that “relationship in nature of marriage,” was legally recognised in
2005 but there is still no law on it. Hence, SHRC asks the state Govt that “a
self-contained law on relationship in the nature of marriage be formulated” and
lists seven points – including mandatory registration of live-in relationships
—in a bid to assist Govt to formulate such a law, while copying its order to state
Chief Secretary and others. It said that an “intense awareness campaign” is
required to inform women to stay away from live-in relationships.indianexpress

RSS may Shun Hindu Rashtra Idea: Jamiat head
Arshad Madani on Mohan Bhagwat Meet
At a time when communal hate and polarisation is
on the rise, Maulana Arshad Madani, chief of Deoband-based Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind,
raised eyebrows by meeting RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat recently..Speaking to The
Quint in Deoband, Maulana Madani revealed how the one-and-a-half-hour meeting
was orchestrated, what was discussed, and what are his expectations from the
RSS chief going forward. Madani said, "There were some people in the
middle who asked if I wanted to meet Bhagwat ji, I said it was a good idea.
Bhagwat ji has an organisation (RSS) which is a very strong organisation. In my
opinion, there is no one else like him in India. He could have denied a meeting
with me, but on the contrary, he hinted that we will be in touch in the future
and the dialogue will continue."
Replying to a question about the core ideology of RSS that there should
be a Hindu Rashtra, Madani said, "In front of us, Bhagwat ji never said
anything that the head of the state would want a Hindu Rashtra. Nothing like
that was brought up during the meeting." Responding to another question
that do you think RSS can ignore or reject their core ideology of the Hindu
Rashtra?, Madani said, "Yes, they are capable. The state of the country is
heading towards destruction. The economy is either already destroyed or headed
towards destruction. It is possible that in this scenario, one’s thought
process changes from what it was till yesterday." He further said, "I
brought up people from the RSS who have written against Muslims and secularism.
He (Mohan Bhagwat) said RSS is not beholden to the those views anymore."thequint
Embrace Minorities for Sake of Nation-Building:
RSS' Mohan Bhagwat Tells Workers in Kolkata
Kolkata: In a bid to unite the country’s citizens
irrespective of their religion or ideology, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is said to
have suggested to the outfit’s workers to reach out members of minority
communities. Recently, Bhagwat met the chief of Jamiat Ulema, Maulana Arshad
Madani in Delhi. Soon after, during his 2-day visit to Kolkata, he urged Sangh
workers to create a connection with people from all communities.A senior Sangha
worker in Bengal said, “Bhagwat told us that India can only be united if there
is a spirit of nationalism among all of us. He said people may follow their own
ideology or religion but ‘jatiyatabad’ (nationalism) is the only way to
unity.”“He asked us to embrace all, including Muslims, who believe in
nationalism. He said there should not be any division when it’s comes to
nation. Muslim nationalists are thinking in one way and we are thinking in
another way, but all of us are concerned about our nation. So the point is to
bring everybody under one umbrella for nation-building. He asked us to bond
with one other,” he added.Bhagwat’s meeting with Madani on Aug. 30 in Delhi was
reportedly to discuss the issues of national unity and nationalism. A day later
in Kolkata, he urged outfit’s workers to further their bonds with members of
minority communities. He also asked them to not shy away from accepting
mistakes if they failed to make common people understand what kind of social

BJP MP says Chinese soldiers built bridge in
Arunachal, Army denies
New Delhi:A BJP MP from Arunachal on Wednesday
said that Chinese soldiers had built a wooden bridge nearly 75 km inside Indian
territory, a claim the Army denied, with Army spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand
emphasising that “there has been no such incursion” in the border state.Tapir
Gao, Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal East and state BJP president, claimed that the
bridge was built on a stream approximately 25 km from Chaglagam, the
administrative circle in Anjaw district, from where the McMohan Line, India’s
legal border with China, is about 100 km. He said a local villager who went to
the woods to fish and hunt sighted the bridge and sent him a video. “As a
representative of that area, I could not hide it,” Gao said.He also asserted
that this alleged incursion is a “regular phenomenon”, and that PLA troops had
entered in other areas, too. Army spokesperson Col Anand said the area being
referred to is called the “Fish Tail”, and there is a “differing perception of
the alignment of the Line of Control, as in many other areas”. He also said
that since it is an area of “differing claims, troops routinely from either
side patrol the area” and “civilian hunters and herb collectors also frequent
there during summer months”. He emphasised, “There is no permanent presence of
either Chinese soldiers or civilians in the area, and surveillance is

Giriraj’s lynching solution: breed only female cows
New Delhi: Promoting artificial insemination in
cattle using sex-sorted semen “will help reduce lynching”, Animal Husbandry, Dairying
and Fisheries Minister Giriraj Singh said on Wednesday. The main benefit of
using sex-sorted semen is that the farmer can ensure that only female calves or
heifers are born. Singh pointed out that artificially inseminating cows using
semen from genetically superior bulls will also improve the fertility and milk
production capacity of the calves they produce, thus incentivising farmers to
keep them longer rather than abandoning them. “This will help reduce lynching,”
he told journalists, adding that if cattle are not left to stray, then the
possibility of such problems would be lowered. The mechanisation of agriculture
has already led to the increasing obsolescence of bulls. Bans on cow and cattle
slaughter, as well as instances of cow-related vigilantism and lynching, have
led to a collapse in the value of non-productive cows as well, forcing farmers
to abandon them. thehindu
‘Rat eaters’ dying like rats in Uttar Pradesh:
State refutes reports of hunger deaths
Several people belonging to the poorest of the
poor ‘Musahar’ (rat eating) community are reported to have died in August in
Kushinagar, adjacent to Gorakhpur, UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s home turf. While
district authorities have claimed deaths to have resulted due to illnesses and
‘ high fever’ , social workers, activists and even health workers attributed
the deaths to malnutrition and hunger. At least five such cases have been
recorded. They range from Reema Kumar (6) to Beepat Musahar (28). While the
girl child was said to have been running a high temperature, officials,
reacting 48 hours after Beepat Musahar’s death on Independence Day, claimed the
28-year old was a diabetic and also suffered from Tuberculosis, claims which
were refuted by family. From the same village where Reema Kumari and Beepat
Musahar lived, Rampurpatti in Dudahi Block, a 17-year old Bhadari Kumari passed
away on Aug.17. This time too people and social workers blamed chronic hunger
and malnutrition to have caused the death. Govt officials, however, did not
react to this death.nationalheraldindia

Morsi's son, outspoken critic of Egyptian govt,
Abdullah dies of heart attack in Cairo hospital
The youngest son of late Egyptian President
Mohamed Morsi died of an alleged heart attack at a hospital in Cairo, sources said.Abdullah
Morsi, who was in his mid-twenties, died on Wednesday at the Oasis hospital in
Giza in the southwest of the capital, the sources said.A Morsi family source
confirmed his death to Anadolu Agency without giving further details. Egypt's
health ministry has yet to comment on his death. Mohamed Morsi died on June 17
while standing trial for charges that he and legal observers said were
politically motivated.Several local news sites reported the death of Abdullah
Morsi, saying there was no criminal suspicion, noting that Morsi's son had
suffered several previous health scares, and was saddened by his father's
death.Morsi's second son, Ahmed, said his younger brother, Abdullah, was
driving his car and had sudden spasms. He was immediately taken to hospital but
doctors were unable to revive him."Abdullah died at the hospital after
suffering a heart attack," said Ahmed Morsi. Abdullah Morsi had been
imprisoned several times in recent years. He had been accused and acquitted of
drug use, in a case involving allegations that he and legal observers said were
fabricated.Among Morsi's children, Abdullah was the most outspoken critic of
the Egyptian govt. He was also the most supportive of his father and his
defence during his trial and stay in prison. In a Twitter post after his
father's death, Abdullah accused a number of Egyptian officials whom he called
"partners" of el-Sisi "in killing martyr president".aljazeera
Saudi diplomat says UAE betraying us in Yemen
under pretext of Muslim Brotherhood members:MEMO
President of Saudi-American Public Relations
Affairs Committee (SAPRAC), Salman Al-Ansari, attacked UAE, considering that it
is “fooling” Riyadh under the pretext of Muslim Brotherhood members, for
“expansionist ambitions” in the region.“Our open enmity to the Muslim
Brotherhood group does not mean in any way that we become fooled by efforts to
move beyond agreed-upon strategic objectives in conformity with international
law, by passing absurd and divisive projects,” Al-Ansari wrote on
Twitter.“Narrow-mindedness is a problem,” he added, describing what UAE is
doing in Yemen as “treason.” Although Al-Ansari did not explicitly mention UAE, his statements revolve
around Abu Dhabi’s policy in Yemen, where UAE has sought to extend control of
separatist forces in the southern areas of the country to divide it. This has
explicitly been indicated by Emirati figures close to authority such as
Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, Advisor to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.Al-Ansari’s
statements coincided with Saudi Arabia’s dispatch, on Monday, of a military
force to the city of Shabwah, which has seen clashes in recent days between
Coalition-backed Govt forces and UAE-backed separatist militias.UAE-Saudi
relations have been at odds regarding Yemen in the past months, shortly after
Abu Dhabi’s partial withdrawal from the Riyadh-led Coalition supporting the
legitimate Yemeni govt.
Netanyahu has turned Hebron into a ‘Zionist
occupation military outpost’
Palestinian residents and social media users have
taken their disapproval of PM Netanyahu’s planned visit to the occupied West
Bank city of Hebron to Twitter. An increased Israeli occupation force presence
has been felt in the area today with a number of Palestinian stores forced to
close. In the first event of its kind, the Israeli leader will deliver a public
address in the occupied city for a ceremony commemorating Jews killed in
1929.This comes as Netanyahu has repeatedly promised not to give up any land
occupied by Israel in the West Bank, saying on Sunday: “With God’s help we will
extend Jewish sovereignty to all the settlements as part of the (biblical) land
of Israel, as part of the state of Israel.” According to Times of Israel,
roughly 850 settlers live in heavily guarded illegal settlement in Hebron. The
city is also home to some 200,000 Palestinians who are forced to endure severe
restrictions on movement and curfews. The city’s historic Ibrahimi Mosque was
also partitioned in 1994 after an extremist Jew massacred 29 Muslim worshippers
as they prayed.middleeastmonitor
Netanyahu's pre-poll visit to Hebron sparks
protest
Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu has made a
contentious visit to the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, a move condemned by
the Palestinians and widely perceived as his bid to garner support from
ultra-nationalists in the run-up to elections in less than two weeks. The
embattled PM on Wednesday delivered a speech outside a contested holy site
known to Jews as the Tomb of Patriarchs, and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque.
Netanyahu said that Hebron would not become "Judenrein", a term used

Pompeo declines to sign risky deal with Taliban:Time
US
secretary of state Mike Pompeo has refused to sign the peace deal that his
special representative has inked with the Taliban, mainly because it does not
guarantee the continued presence of US forces in the country to defeat al-Qaida
or the existence of the democratically elected government, a media report said.Pompeo
is "declining to put his name to the deal" that has been hammered out
by special US representative on Afghan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad after
nine round of talks with the representatives of Taliban in Doha, the Time
magazine reported on Wednesday."It doesn't guarantee the continued
presence of US counterterrorism forces to battle al-Qaida, the survival of the
pro-US Govt in Kabul, or even an end to the fighting in Afghanistan,"
reported Time magazine, which based its report on unnamed senior Afghan,EU and
Trump Administration officials."No one speaks with certainty. None,"
said an Afghan official taking part in briefings on the deal with
Khalilzad."It is all based on hope. There is no trust. There is no history
of trust. There is no evidence of honesty and sincerity from the Taliban,"
and intercepted communications "show that they think they have fooled the
US while the US believes that should the Taliban cheat, they will pay a hefty
price."According to Time magazine, the Taliban has asked for Pompeo to
sign an agreement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the official name of
the Govt founded by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 1996."Having the
secretary of state sign such a document would amount to de facto recognition of
Taliban as a legitimate political entity, and he declined to do so," the
report said, quoting the Afghan officials.Pompeo's office declined to
comment. If the deal is signed, US has agreed to withdraw some 5,400 US troops,
roughly a third of the present force, from five bases within 135 days.TOI
Kabul:Taliban claim deadly attack near US embassy
A Taliban suicide car bombing in Afghan capital
killed a US service member, a Romanian soldier, and at least 10 Afghan
civilians - the second such attack this week after a preliminary US-Taliban
peace deal was announced. The blast took place on Thursday in Shash Darak, a
heavily fortified area adjacent to the Green Zone and home to several important
complexes, including NDS, Afghan intelligence service, and the US embassy. At
least 10 civilians were killed and 42 people wounded in the attack that was
claimed by the Taliban, which has been holding peace talks with the United
States in Doha, Qatar, interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. Hours later, Taliban set off a car bomb
outside an Afghan military base in a neighbouring province, killing four
civilians."Farid Ahmad Karimi, general manager at the Wazir Akbar Khan
hospital close to the bomb site, told AFP that both civilians and security
personnel were among the dead and wounded.A NATO Resolute Support mission
statement said 2 service members were "killed in action," without
providing details or releasing their names pending notification of their
families. American soldier was 4th killed in the past 2 weeks in Afghanistan. The
capital has been gripped by a surge in deadly violence even after the US and
Taliban reached an agreement "in principle" that would see the
Pentagon pull thousands of troops from Afghanistan in return for various
Taliban security promises.US top negotiator for peace, Zalmay Khalilzad, said
this week 2 sides had drawn up a draft framework deal under which US troops
would leave five military bases in Afghanistan within 135 days of the signing
of the pact.aljazeera

Boris Johnson defeated again; no snap UK election
London: For the third time in two days, UK PM
Boris Johnson has suffered a major parliamentary defeat as his bid to call an
election next month was easily thwarted late on Wednesday. Johnson's
Conservative Party failed to win the two-thirds majority needed to call a snap
election, mustering only 298 of the 434 votes required. Given the size of the
rebellion, and the subsequent lack of numbers on the government’s benches, most
opponents abstained from voting, with just 56 opposition politicians actively
opposing his bid to head to the polls in the coming weeks. After the vote went
badly against him, he chided opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn before MPs.
"I think [Corbyn] has become the first opposition leader in the history of
our country to refuse the invitation to head to a general election," said
Johnson. "I can only speculate as to the reasons behind his hesitation,
the obvious conclusion is I'm afraid that he does not think he will
win."Downing Street insisted Johnson would not resign to force a general
election after losing control of the House of Commons a day earlier, resulting
in a defeat that allowed the opposition, led by Corbyn's Labour party, to
attempt to legislate to block a "no-deal" withdrawal from the
European Union by forcing Johnson to seek a delay if he fails to reach an
agreement with Brussels. His supporters ended a night-long filibuster in the
upper House of Lords when the Govt gave up trying to block proposed
legislation. The opposition said they should now be able to pass the bill before
Johnson suspends parliament for over a month next week."Govt commits to
allowing (the draft legislation) to complete all stages in course of Thurs
& Friday - with the bill then going back to the Commons for any further
consideration on Monday," Labour party tweeted early today.A "rebel
alliance" of 21 Conservative MPs were kicked out of the party on Tuesday
night after siding with the opposition.aljazeera
Brexit: Boris Johnson's brother resigns as Tory
minister
British PM Boris Johnson's brother, Jo, has
resigned as a junior minister and said he would step down as a member of
parliament, citing a conflict between family loyalty and the national
interest."It's been an honour to represent Orpington for nine years and to
serve as a minister under three PMs," Jo Johnson said."In recent
weeks, I've been torn between family loyalty and the national interest - it's
an unresolvable tension and time for others to take on my roles as MP and
minister," he said.It is the latest blow to PM, whose authority and
ability to govern has been diminished by a rebellion among Conservative MPs
over his refusal to rule out a "no-deal" withdrawal from the European
Union.Johnson has now lost three consecutive votes in the House of Commons
after losing his governing majority. The PM's brother, Jo, has held a variety of
junior ministerial roles in the past five years and has spoken in favour of a
second Brexit referendum.aljazeera
