INX media case: Chidambaram sent to Tihar jail
till Sept.19, says 'worried about economy'
The special CBI court today sent former Union finance
minister P Chidambaram to judicial custody till Sept.19 in connection with the
INX media case. Chidambaram has already spent 15 days in CBI custody. He will
now be sent to Tihar jail in the national capital. Earlier in the day, the
Supreme Court had refused to grant ex Union minister pre-arrest bail in INX
Media case. In partial relief to Chidambaram and his son Karti, a Delhi court,
earlier today, granted father-son duo anticipatory bail in the cases lodged by
CBI and ED in Aircel-Maxis case. Granting relief, Special Judge O P Saini
directed them to join the probe in the cases. “In event of arrest, they can be
released on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety of like amount. The
accused are directed to join the investigation,” the court said. Moments after
he was sent to 14-day judicial custody, Chidambaram expressed his worry about
the state of economy. “I am only worried about the economy,” he said when asked

NRC’s 120-day appeal deadline may be revised
120-day appeal deadline set for those excluded
from NRC list may be revised given the delays involved with securing NRC data
and the issue of certified copies of exclusion. Before publication of the final
NRC, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had announced that the provision to appeal
exclusion before Foreigners’ Tribunal would be extended from 60 days to 120
days. However, these 120 days were to be counted from the date of publication
of final list i.e.Aug31.However,MHA sources said that given the directions of
the Supreme Court to NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela to secure the NRC data
first, the process of issuing certified copies of exclusion to those not
included in the list is likely to be delayed. This could jeopardise the chances
of those excluded of having a fair shot at justice. Certified copy of exclusion
would be necessary for anyone willing to challenge their exclusion from NRC in FT.
The document will mention the reasons for his exclusion and give details of the
documents that were not considered good enough to prove his legacy.

Srinagar: Family of the young student from
Srinagar’s Elahibagh locality who passed away contested claims by security
forces that the cause of death was a “stone injury”. They say that Asrar Ahmad
had been battling for his life for a month in a city hospital after being hit
by pellets.“The forces targeted my son with pellets without any provocation. He
had pellet injuries on his face, skull and left eye,” said Firdous Ahmad Khan,
Asrar’s father.A Class 11 student, Asrar succumbed to his injuries late on
Tuesday evening at SKIMS, Valley’s premier hospital.He was buried the next
morning in a local graveyard, hours after authorities reimposed restriction in
Downtown Srinagar to prevent protests.According to his friends and family, the
18-year-old boy was injured on the evening of August 6, when paramilitary
forces hit him with pellets while he was playing with friends outside his
house. Asrar’s father Firdous showed The Wire photographs and medical records,
including an x-ray scan and hospital registration card, to prove that his son
died of pellet injuries.One of the pictures, taken while Asrar was in hospital,
shows multiple pellet injuries on his face. X-ray also confirms that multiple
pellets had hit Asrar on his head, skull, face and left eye.On his registration
card issued at 6:46 pm on Aug 6 at SKIMS, time of his admission, the doctors
have written that Asrar has “multiple pellets on head, eye…”“He had 3 pellets
in his left eye – 2 of them were removed during a surgery at Bemina hospital.
He was later shifted back to SKIMS,” said Firdous.ADG of J&K police Muneer Ahmad Khan rejected the allegations
that Asrar was targeted by security forces.He said the young boy had been “hit
by a stone”. While the family said the hospital hasn’t yet issued Ahmad’s death

status, thousands have been detained, with some alleging torture by Indian
security forces. In a village in southern Kashmir, a 22-year-old man said he
was picked up in a midnight raid and tortured for more than an hour along with
a dozen other Kashmiris."I was beaten with sticks, rifle butts and they
kept asking me why I went for a protest march. I kept telling them that I
didn't, but they didn't stop. After I fainted, they used electric shocks to
revive me," he told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity."Once they
realised I was innocent, they wanted me to name a stone-pelter. I told them, I
don't know anyone. So, they continued beating and electrocuting me. They wanted
all of us to give the names of stone-pelters."They began pulling my beard
and even tried to put it on fire. Then, someone hit me on the head and I
fainted. It is then they, perhaps, realised that I might die. So, they asked my
friend to take me home. I regained consciousness after 2 days and it's been 20

Qureshi that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Pakistan PM

Kashmir's autonomy, locked it down with thousands of additional troops and made
mass arrests, residents are resisting attempts by authorities to show some
signs of normalcy returning in the Muslim-majority valley.Officials in J&K's
summer capital Srinagar say that 90 per cent of Kashmir valley is free of
restrictions on daytime movement, some landline phone connections have been
restored and thousands of schools have re-opened. However, checkpoints remain
in place and communication restrictions make reporting from the region
difficult.Despite the partial relaxation, an informal but widespread boycott by
students, shopkeepers and public and private sector workers is taking place
across the valley, aimed at protesting against New Delhi, according to

under J&K PSA. Of these, 250 have been booked under this law in the Valley

on an average, between 70-80 per month.More than 100 of these detainees are

constitution allowed a breeding ground for armed violence in J&K, a top
Kashmiri-American body on Wednesday alleged that a group of propaganda-mongers
are spreading misinformation and confusion about the abrogation of these
provisions.“There has been a tremendous amount of confusion, misinformation,
and fear being disseminated by propaganda-mongers and ill-informed press about
the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A by Govt of India,”influential Kashmiri

injustice, like loss of internet and phone lines to the people living in the
Kashmir valley, it is also prudent to understand the implication of these

SC fixes pleas of Kashmir Times editor, others
for hearing on Sep 16
New Delhi :The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed
for hearing on September 16 pleas of the Kashmir Times Editor and others on
alleged communication blockade in J&K.Anuradha Bhasin, Executive Editor of
Kashmir Times, told a bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi that even after a month
of scrapping of Article 370, journalists were “not allowed to move freely in
the state”. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that editors
of Kashmir Times chose not to publish their newspaper from Srinagar.At the
outset, advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for the journalist, submitted that
the Editor-in-chief of Kashmir Times travelled to many parts of the state and
according to him, the situation was such that media cannot work due to
“communication restrictions”.She said it was not clear as to on what basis
there is a “communication blockade” which has resulted in the information
blackout.The advocate claimed that during the Editor-in-chief’s interaction
with the people, one of the doctors spoke about the humanitarian
medico-crisis.The editor also alleged that it is difficult to travel beyond
Srinagar and journalists are finding it difficult to report.While she was
making the submissions, some of the lawyers said they have filed a caveat in
the matter and submitted that the petition of Bhasin was not maintainable. However,
bench concluded the hearing in the matter by asking the parties to complete
formalities of filing counter-affidavit and replies and posted the matter for
final disposal on Sept.16.However, the court said it was not going to entertain
the writ petition filed by Congress activist and businessman Tehseen Poonawalla
seeking removal of restrictions in Kashmir Valley and made it clear that he can

Mufti, the daughter of former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti, to travel to Srinagar
to meet the PDP chief. Mufti has been kept under detention since August 5.In
her plea, Iltija submitted that she is concerned about her mother’s health as
she has not met her in a month.Iltija Mufti also raised concerns if she would

interrogated a Kashmiri youth after a video of him being attacked by a mob in
Neemrana in Alwar district of Rajasthan started doing the rounds on social
media, India Today reported on Thursday. The youth, identified as Mir Faiz, was
allegedly tied to a pole and beaten up by a mob for being dressed in women’s
clothes.While the student registered a first information report for the alleged
assault, Alwar Police also started an investigation into the matter and was on

Unemployment rate at 3 yr high in Aug:CMIE data
Unemployment rate in India has hit a record 3
year high of 8.4% in August, says data released by Centre for Monitoring Indian
Economy (CMIE).According to the data, weekly unemployment rate in Indian stand
between 8 and 9% in Aug.2019, as compared to 7-8% observed in July. CMIE noted
on Wednesday that the unemployment rate in the country has hit the highest
level since Sept.2016.As per CMIE, urban unemployment rate was at 9.6%, and
rural stands at 7.8% during the month under review.In August, employment was
nearly 2% higher than it was in August 2018, supported by growth in rural
India. Year-on-year employment growth in rural India stood at 2.9% in August
2019, while urban India reported a 0.2% decline, quoting report Business Today
said.Labour participation rate (LPR) is one of the factors behind unemployment
rate. LPR has risen slowly and steadily to 43.35% in Aug 2019, from 42.46% in

biryani to Hindus’ at Mahoba Urs
Police in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, have registered
an FIR against 23 Muslim youth for “promoting enmity between groups on grounds
of religion and hurting religious sentiments”, following allegations that they
served “non-vegetarian biryani” to Hindus at a Muslim religious congregation
without telling them.Police said that the case was registered after the
intervention of local BJP MLA Brijbhushan Rajpoot.A police officer also said
that the complainant was willing to give an affidavit to withdraw the case but
the MLA urged him to lodge the complaint. The alleged incident took place in
the Charkhari police station area of the district on Aug.31 during Urs, a
religious congregation organised by Muslim residents of Salat village.Religious
congregation, according to the locals, has been organised every year for the
past six years at a local shrine. FIR stated that buffalo meat was served mixed
with rice without alerting the Hindus to intentionally hurt their religious
sentiments. Meanwhile, BJP MLA said that when he came to know about the
incident, he “asked” the villagers to get an FIR registered. Rajkumar Raikwar,
who is a complainant in FIR, said that while only one person, identified as
Pappu Ansari, was responsible for serving non-vegeterian food without telling
anyone, all 22 others named in FIR were innocent. Their names have been added
on the direction of the MLA who “made us sign the complaint without us knowing

Commission seeks law against live-in relationships
Jaipur: Rajasthan State Human Right Commission
(SHRC) has equated life of a woman in a live-in relationship with a “concubine”
while asking the state Govt to bring in a law against live-in relationships.
The order by SHRC chairperson Prakash Chandra Tatia, ex Chief Justice of
Jharkhand High Court, and SHRC member Mahesh Chandra Sharma, a former Rajasthan
High Court judge, said that “Right to Life” in Article 21 of the Indian
Constitution translates into “an honourable life, not an animal-like
life.”“From no viewpoint can a concubine-like life of a woman be called a
dignified life. Hence, for a woman to sacrifice her honourable life and adopt a
dishonourable life in the form of a concubine, is not right to life. By
demanding such a life, women can’t protect their fundamental rights,” SHRC
said.SHRC delivered the order after 2 women had approached it in 2017 regarding
a live-in relationship.To protect their privacy, details of their cases were
not disclosed in the order. Citing ‘Protection of Domestic Violence Act 2005’,
SHRC said that “relationship in nature of marriage,” was legally recognised in
2005 but there is still no law on it. Hence, SHRC asks the state Govt that “a
self-contained law on relationship in the nature of marriage be formulated” and
lists seven points – including mandatory registration of live-in relationships
—in a bid to assist Govt to formulate such a law, while copying its order to state
Chief Secretary and others.It said that an “intense awareness campaign” is

Bengal: Days after new anti-lynching law, Kabir
Sheikh beaten to death in Murshidabad, 2 detained
Kolkata :A 32-year-old man was beaten to death by
a mob in Berhampur town of Murshidabad district on Wednesday morning. This
comes days after the state Govt enacted a law making lynching punishable by
death. According to police, 32-year-old Kabir Sheikh, a resident of
Sahajadpur-Fuliapara area, entered a medicine store in Lalbagh area of
Berhampur town and allegedly started to damage the furniture of a doctor’s
chamber. Soon, a group of people entered the chamber and beat him up. Sheikh’s
body was later found on the verandah of the medicine store with his hands and
legs tied with ropes.He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on
arrival.“2 persons have been detained in the case and we are looking for
others. Investigation is on,” said a senior police officer of Murshidabad. According
to police, Sheikh used to work as a mason at Saudi Arabia and had recently
returned to his village. Sources in the police said they are yet to find out
why Sheikh entered the doctor’s chamber. Though police are probing whether he
was mentally unstable, his family has denied any history of mental

was orchestrated, what was discussed, and what are his expectations from the
RSS chief going forward. Madani said, "There were some people in the
middle who asked if I wanted to meet Bhagwat ji, I said it was a good idea.
Bhagwat ji has an organisation (RSS) which is a very strong organisation. In my
opinion, there is no one else like him in India. He could have denied a meeting
with me, but on the contrary, he hinted that we will be in touch in the future
and the dialogue will continue."
Replying to a question about the core ideology of RSS that there should
be a Hindu Rashtra, Madani said, "In front of us, Bhagwat ji never said
anything that the head of the state would want a Hindu Rashtra. Nothing like
that was brought up during the meeting." Responding to another question
that do you think RSS can ignore or reject their core ideology of the Hindu
Rashtra?, Madani said, "Yes, they are capable. The state of the country is
heading towards destruction. The economy is either already destroyed or headed
towards destruction. It is possible that in this scenario, one’s thought

said that Chinese soldiers had built a wooden bridge nearly 75 km inside Indian
territory, a claim the Army denied, with Army spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand
emphasising that “there has been no such incursion” in the border state.Tapir
Gao, Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal East and state BJP president, claimed that the
bridge was built on a stream approximately 25 km from Chaglagam, the
administrative circle in Anjaw district, from where the McMohan Line, India’s
legal border with China, is about 100 km. He said a local villager who went to
the woods to fish and hunt sighted the bridge and sent him a video. “As a
representative of that area, I could not hide it,” Gao said.He also asserted

New Delhi: Promoting artificial insemination in
cattle using sex-sorted semen “will help reduce lynching”, Animal Husbandry, Dairying
and Fisheries Minister Giriraj Singh said on Wednesday.The main benefit of
using sex-sorted semen is that the farmer can ensure that only female calves or
heifers are born. Singh pointed out that artificially inseminating cows using
semen from genetically superior bulls will also improve the fertility and milk
production capacity of the calves they produce, thus incentivising farmers to
keep them longer rather than abandoning them. “This will help reduce lynching,”
he told journalists, adding that if cattle are not left to stray, then the
possibility of such problems would be lowered. The mechanisation of agriculture
has already led to the increasing obsolescence of bulls. Bans on cow and cattle
slaughter, as well as instances of cow-related vigilantism and lynching, have

Several people belonging to the poorest of the
poor ‘Musahar’ (rat eating) community are reported to have died in August in
Kushinagar, adjacent to Gorakhpur, UP CM Yogi Adityanath’s home turf.While
district authorities have claimed deaths to have resulted due to illnesses and
‘ high fever’ , social workers, activists and even health workers attributed
the deaths to malnutrition and hunger.At least five such cases have been
recorded. They range from Reema Kumar (6) to Beepat Musahar (28). While the
girl child was said to have been running a high temperature, officials,
reacting 48 hours after Beepat Musahar’s death on Independence Day, claimed the

Musahar lived, Rampurpatti in Dudahi Block, a 17-year old Bhadari Kumari passed
