Idols installation inside Babri Masjid in 1949 a
‘surreptitious attack’: Muslim parties' lawyer Dhavan tells SC
New Delhi:The installation of Ayodhya idols
inside the Babri Masjid in the intervening night of Dec.22-23 of 1949, which
marked the beginning of heightened tensions and legal battle, was a
“surreptitious attack”, senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan claimed before a
Constitution Bench today.5-judge Bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi heard
Dhavan argue for the Muslim parties that appearance of the idols inside
the mosque was not a “miracle” but a “planned attack”.He referred to documents,
saying how then PM Jawaharlal Nehru had expressed grave concern about the
incident. Dhavan alleged that then Faizabad DM K.K.K. Nair and his fellow local
official Guru Dutt Singh did not act to remove the idols despite instructions
from then Chief Secretary Bhagwan Sahay and Inspector General of Police B.N. Lahiri. In
his submissions, Dhavan said inscriptions of the word “Allah” were seen inside
the mosque at the arches. Dhavan referred to records about aggression shown by
the local populace towards worshippers coming to the mosque. He said the
disputed land may have been a “composite place of worship”. He compared it to
religious sites in Jerusalem like “Wailing Wall”. Referring to the Hindus'
argument that the Ramjanmabhumi itself is a juristic person, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud
asked if Ayodhya deity is accepted as a juristic person, then the place of
worship would not be just the exact spot where he is born (under the dome of
mosque) but also places appurtenant to it. Dhavan compared Dec.22-23, 1949
incident with the demolition of Babri Masjid on Dec.6, 1992 by kar sevaks.“This
show can't go on, My Lords...No more rath yatras,” he said. Yesterday, contesting
the claims of Hindu parties for ownership of the land in Ayodhya, Muslim
parties told the SC that the case could not be decided on the basis of Hindus'
belief and faith that Ram was born at the disputed site by glossing over
recorded historical facts since 1934 about a 'living' mosque.Dhavan said the
SC's decision in this case would have grave impact on the future of India, its
secularism and the secular character of the Constitution. "What is to be
determined and how in this case? How will the court determine the exact
location of Ram's birthplace?" he asked. The Hindu/ TOI

Babri Masjid case: SC notice to 2 for
‘threatening’ advocate Rajeev Dhavan
New Delhi :The Supreme Court today issued notices
to 2 persons for allegedly threatening senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, who is
representing Muslim parties in the Babri Masjid land case. The court had taken
up the matter based on a contempt plea filed by Dhavan. “Notice,” said 5-judge
Constitution bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi at the start of hearing on 18th
day. Dhavan, who represents lead petitioner M Siddiq and Sunni Waqf Board in the
case, has said that he received a letter on Aug.14, from N Shanmugam, a retired
education officer, threatening him for appearing for Muslim parties. He also
alleged that he has been accosted both at home and in the court premises by
several people. Dhavan had also filed contempt petition against a Rajasthan
resident, Sanjay Kalal Bajrangi, for allegedly threatening him.indianexpress/PTI
Israel PM Netanyahu cancels planned day-long
visit to India on Sep 9
PM Benjamin Netanyahu today cancelled a planned
day-long visit to India on Sept.9 to meet his counterpart Narendra Modi, citing
scheduling issues due to an unprecedented repeat polls in Israel. A statement
issued by PNO said the two leaders spoke over phone and they “agreed that due
to scheduling constraints, the PM’s visit will take place after (Sept.17)
elections.”This is the second time this year that Israeli leader has cancelled
a planned visit to India, doing so earlier before the April polls.Netanyahu’s
planned visit was widely seen in Israel as an effort by him to project his
acceptance worldwide and prop up his campaign just days before Sept.17 repeat
polls. In July, Netanyahu’s Likud Party put banners featuring his pictures with
Modi, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to lure support by presenting him in a
“different league”.His campaign has focused on bringing out his close chemistry
with the world leaders and trying to project him as a leader of unmatched

ASSAM FINAL LIST
Assam: Excluded in NRC, Army soldiers ask should
they fight enemy or prove citizenship
Barpeta:Saruharid village of Barpeta district in
Assam is known as the Fauji Gaon (village of defence personnel) in the
locality. Almost 200 families live here, which send over 20 soldiers to Indian
Army and paramilitary forces. Ironically, many of these soldiers are facing an
identity crisis as their names didn't appear in the final NRC list which was
published on August 31. The village is now dwelling under the shadow of great
grief.Family of Dilbar Hussain is in such league. He along with his younger
brother Mizanur Ali have been declared ineligible for Indian citizenship as per
the final NRC list. His elder brother Saidul Islam is a serving Subedar in the
Indian Army who has fought in Kargil war. Dilbar himself is in the Indian Army
while Mizanur Ali is posted with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Luckily Subedar Saidul Islam cleared the list. Speaking about the matter,
Dilbar Hussain said, "We fight with enemies. We regard our Army family
first. But, we are deeply disheartened after the release of the final NRC list.
There we are Indian Army jawans, but here at home we are fighting to get Indian
citizenship."indiatoday
Out of NRC: Retired teacher, NSUI leader, staff
at NRC Seva Kendra
Guwahati :Abdus Subhan, a former Grade IV
employee in the state education department in Mohimari village of Assam’s
Kamrup district, died on August 17, a fortnight before his family was left
divided by the final NRC published. Subhan’s eldest son Zubair Hussain (28), a
data entry operator at an NRC Seva Kendra in the neighbouring Majortop village,
found on Saturday that his name and that of his brother Ariful (25) and sister
Yesmin (22) were out of NRC. But their elder siblings Fazail (35) and Salma
(30) were in, and so were there parents.“Our grandfather’s name is in the 1951
NRC. We don’t know why the exclusion happened. If my parents and elder siblings
are Indians, how can I be a foreigner?,” says Zubair.Over 100 km away, Ahmed
Toweb (28),resident of Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district, is the only member of
his family to be excluded. His parents and 5 other siblings are in. Toweb is a
secretary of the state committee of NSUI, Congress’s students’ wing.“My
grandfather is in 1951 NRC. We have land documents dating back to 1944 and
1962. My entire family is in but I am out. Now what? I have to go to the
Foreigners’ Tribunal,” says Toweb.“The reason for exclusions which have left
families divided could be mere negligence of ground officials, technical
problems or personal agenda of officials,” he adds. In Tezpur town of Sonitpur
district, Parimal Bhattacharjee (77) is worried over the exclusion of his wife
Rina Bhattacharjee (71). Rina is a retired teacher while Parimal was a college
lecturer. indian express
NRC : ‘Thought India was safe?’ Anger abounds in
a Hindu settlement of Assam’s Barak Valley
Silchar Minutes after NRC was published,
Ramakanta Biswas ran across the road from his mithai shop to the computer shop.
In Chotodudhpatil, a “100 % Hindu Bengali” village on outskirts of Silchar in Cachar
district, many others milled around the shop. The nearest NRC Seva Kendra (NSK)
was quite a distance away, and even involved a short, but slow, boat
ride.Ramakanta did not have time for that. In 2018, a 3-year-long case had
culminated in their favour — when Ramakanta, his brother Khitish, and their
mother Basanti had successfully been able to prove their Indianness in a
Foreigners’ Tribunal after years of being marked as D-Voters. But that morning,
to Ramakanta’s shock, not only were he and Khitish out of NRC, so was his
youngest brother Lakhikanta. Only Basanti and another brother, Kalikanta, had
made it. “We thought India was safe. But what safety is this?” Ramakanta says,
angrily. As dusk falls at Chotodudhpatil, its residents gather at Ramakanta’s
mithai shop as is their daily evening ritual. 50-year-old Bidhan Shankar, whose
wife and mother are out, says “I know Assam has a migration problem but why are
we getting involved in this mess? We are Hindus.” While Ramakanta and his
brothers were all born in Chotodudhpatil, their father had crossed over the
border from Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) “to make a life in India” in 1956.
Basanti, their mother, had crossed over with her family even before that. Over years,
many Biswas family members have tried to make this journey — aunts, uncles and
cousins — to “flee terrible things that were happening in Bangladesh.” indianexpress

No bodies on streets doesn’t mean all normal,
says Mayor of Srinagar, slams Modi govt
Junaid Azim Mattu, Mayor of Srinagar said that
while there may not be any dead bodies lying on the streets of Kashmir,
assuming that it has returned to normal would be highly unrealistic.According
to a report in NDTV, Mattu said, "Containing a sentiment in the aftermath
of a radical decision by enforcing a clampdown doesn't mean that the situation
is normal. BJP govt's policy of detainment seems to be a purely operational
one.” Mayors of Jammu and Srinagar were given equal status to MoS through a
central Govt order last month after its decision of scrapping of special status
given to J&K. However, Mayor of Srinagar has remained critical of Modi
govt's handling of the situation in J&K, reported NDTV. Srinagar’s Mayor is
also the spokesperson of J&K People's Conference (JKPC). Mattu also
condemned the Modi Govt decision of putting mainstream political leader under
arrest."Over the years, political activists in Kashmir have braved threats
and violence by terrorist elements to survive in the mainstream. But today,
they are hunted and hounded," he said.JKPC chief Sajjad Lone was among those

Tribunal confirms ban imposed on J&K Jamaat: PTI
New Delhi:5-year ban imposed on Jamaat-e-Islami J&K,
by the Centre for the outfit's active support to terror and secessionist
activities has been confirmed by a tribunal headed by a Delhi High Court judge.
Tribunal, presided over by Justice Chander Shekhar, after going through
innumerable evidence and deposition by witnesses observed that "inescapable
conclusion" is that JeI, its office-bearers and members have been actively
indulging in unlawful activities."From the aforesaid discussion, it is
apparent that the activities of the respondent association, its office bearers
and members have been disruptive in character, which threaten the sovereignty
and territorial integrity of India. They have been acting in collusion with
other similar organisations in India as well as in other countries against
their stated objectives in their constitution."Central Govt had sufficient
credible material and grounds for taking action under sub-Sections (1) &
(3) of Section 3 of UAPA for declaring
'JeI' as an 'Unlawful Association'. Accordingly, it is held that there is
"sufficient cause" to confirm the notification under sub-Section (3)
of Section 4 of the Act declaring 'JeI' to be an "Unlawful
Association", tribunal observed. During the intervening night of Feb.22
and 23, police had carried out a crackdown on Jamaat cadre and arrested 100

DMs asked to finish inquiries into illegal
mosques, graveyards in Delhi
New Delhi:
With DMs failing to submit reports on illegal mosques, graveyards, and
madrasas on Govt land in the stipulated time, the revenue department has sent
reminders urging them to send their findings soon. DMs were asked to complete the inquiries and
forward the details of their findings to the headquarters by the second of week
of August.“They were supposed to finish their investigation within a week and
intimate the HQRS. The inquiry needs procuring land records and checking of
ownership of plots where structures are built, which is a cumbersome process. Moreover,
district revenue offices don’t have adequate staff. Most of them are busy with
the process of mapping unauthorised colonies, the priority of Govt at present,”
said a senior Delhi Govt official, aware of the development, explaining for the
delay. Instructions to DMs to look into the status of mosques, graveyards, and
madrasas were issued after Delhi L-G forwarded, through the chief secretary, a
list of 54 structures in question, which was handed over by Bharatiya Janata
Party MP from west Delhi Parvesh Verma in July. The revenue department asked the
Delhi Wakf Board (DWB) to send a detailed status report about the mosques,

Afghanistan war: US-Taliban deal would see 5,400
troops withdraw within 20 weeks:BBC
US would withdraw 5,400 troops from Afghanistan
within 20 weeks as part of a deal "in principle" with Taliban
militants, Washington's top negotiator has said.Zalmay Khalilzad revealed
details of the long-awaited deal for first time in a TV interview after
briefing Afghan leaders on the agreement. But he said final approval still
rested with US President Donald Trump. The militants now control more territory
than at any time since 2001 US invasion and have so far refused to talk to the
Afghan Govt, whom they deride as American puppets. The deal outlined by
Khalilzad in an interview with Tolo News is the product of 9 rounds of peace
talks that have been held in the Gulf state of Qatar. In exchange for US troop
withdrawal, Taliban would ensure that Afghanistan would never again be used as
a base for militant groups seeking to attack the US and its allies."We
have agreed that if the conditions proceed according to the agreement, we will
leave within 135 days five bases in which we are present now," Khalilzad
said. US currently has about 14,000 troops in the country. A Taliban spokesman
confirmed in a text message to BBC that the details of the troop withdrawal as
outlined by Khalilzad were correct.A pullout of the remaining forces would
depend on conditions, including the start of peace talks between the Afghan Govt
and the Taliban as well as a ceasefire, reports the BBC's Lyse Doucet from Kabul.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will study the deal before giving any opinion,
his spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said earlier on Monday. He said the Govt still
needed proof the Taliban were committed to peace.bbc
US, France, Britain may be complicit in Yemen war
crimes: UN
US, UK and France may be complicit in war crimes
in Yemen by arming and providing intelligence and logistics support to a
Saudi-led coalition that starves civilians as a war tactic, UN has said.A UN
panel announced today that investigators compiled a secret list of possible
international war crimes suspects, drawn from their latest report into
violations during the four-year conflict between a coalition of Arab states and
Houthi movement that controls Yemen's capital.Investigators found potential
crimes on both sides, while also highlighting the role Western countries have
played as key backers of the Arab states and Iran has played in support of the
Houthis. The report accused the anti-Houthi coalition led by Saudi Arabia and
the UAE of killing civilians in air raids and deliberately denying them food in
a country facing famine. Houthis for their part have shelled cities, deployed
child soldiers and used "siege-like warfare", it said. UN report said
its independent panel had sent a secret list to UN human rights chief Michelle
Bachelet, identifying "individuals who may be responsible for
international crimes".aljazeera

being held before the end of the year. Official APS quoted Gaid Salah - a key
powerbroker since longtime President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April in
the face of mass protests - as saying that an independent body "for the
organisation and surveillance of the election" should be quickly installed.
Angry at unemployment, corruption and an elderly elite seen as out of touch
with young, Algerians have been relentless in taking to streets since Feb to
protest, initially against the ailing Bouteflika's plans to remain in office,
and then for the removal of all remnants of a secretive political and military
establishment that has dominated the country for decades.aljazeera
Boris Johnson loses majority in parliament after
lawmaker defects to Liberal Democrats
PM Minister Boris Johnson lost his working
parliamentary majority ahead of a crucial Brexit vote on Sept.3 after
Conservative MP Phillip Lee defected to the pro-EU Liberal Democrats.“The
Liberal Democrats are delighted to announce that Bracknell MP Phillip Lee has
joined the party,” Lib Dems said. Johnson was braced for a showdown in
parliament on September over his Brexit plan in a vote that could derail
Britain's exit from the European Union in Oct.Members of . Johnson's own Tory
party, including Mr. Lee, have worked with opposition lawmakers to draft a bill
to force him to delay Brexit if he cannot agree divorce terms with the EU in
time. Johnson has warned he will prevent any Tory MPs who support the bill from
standing for the party in any upcoming election, which is looking increasingly
likely. “This Conservative govt is aggressively pursuing a damaging Brexit in
unprincipled ways,” said Mr. Lee. “It is using political manipulation, bullying
and lies. And it is doing these things in a deliberate and considered way,” he
added.Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinso n said she was “delighted” by defection.
“He shares our commitment to prevent a disastrous No Deal Brexit, and to stop
Brexit altogether,” she said.AFP
