Assam using ‘bulldozing
approach’ to handle alleged illegal immigrants: NCM asks govt not to target
Muslims
New Delhi: National
Commission for Minorities (NCM) has recommended to the Assam govt that “the
issue of identifying illegal immigrants be carefully reviewed so as not to
target helpless and disenfranchised sections of [the] Muslim population”. In a
report put together by NCM member Farida Abdulla Khan after a 4-day visit to
the state, the commission said, “At present, it seems that large numbers of
Bengali speaking people have been picked up and put in detention centres
without adequate investigation or notice”.“This is creating extreme uncertainty
and anxiety among large sections of the labouring poor.”Khan’s report also
recommended that the state govt give
“some form of police protection” to those affected by ethnic violence in Baksa
district in 2014 as many people have still not been able to return to their
village.“It is a sad commentary that more than two years, after the violence,
there is no enquiry and its follow up,” the report said.In a separate move on
Sept. 20, the commission also sought a report from the state govt on the recent
killing of two persons in the state. They were allegedly killed in a police
firing during an eviction drive carried out in Bandardubi village near the
Kaziranga national park as per a Gauhati high court order. After Khan’s visit to
3 districts of Assam – Baksa, Kokrajhar and Kamrup – the commission also urged
the Centre to review the Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MSDP) keeping
local needs in mind. “It seems that some of the schemes that were appropriate
earlier have become redundant due to investments through [the] SSA (Sarva
Siksha Abhiyan) programme,” it said. In an interview to The Wire, Khan talked
in detail about her visit to the state from Sept. 7-10 this year. Thewire

targeting the minority community in the name of evicting ‘illegal encroachers’

No evidence of cow
slaughter by Akhlaq’s family: Police
Dadri: Almost 3 months
after the UP police booked the family of Mohammad Akhlaq from Bishahra village
for cow slaughter, officials investigating the case have concluded that there
was no evidence to prove that a cow was ever slaughtered by Akhlaq and his
family. According to highly placed sources in the UP police, investigations in
the case, conducted over two months, have not yielded any proof. The police is
likely to close the case and file a closure report in the Surajpur Court. Police
later registered the statement of Surajpal. No evidence was found by the
forensic team to establish the alleged cow slaughter even after several visits
to the village and the alleged site of the cow slaughter, Jan Mohammad’s house.
“The forensic team collected the soil but no element of animal blood was found
in the entire area,” said a police official in Jarcha police station where the
case was registered on July 15. According to the Circle Officer of the area,
Anurag Singh, the police also did not find knives and other implements which
could establish that a cow was slaughtered on the spot.“There is no credible
evidence in this case which takes us towards the side of arrest or chargesheet.
Had there been even one solid shred of proof, we would have filed the charge
sheet,”Singh told The Hindu. He said for the UP Cow Slaughter Prevention Act,
1955, to be slapped and proven, it was important that the police recovers the
knives used in slaughtering the cow, the blood, carcass and meat of the cow,
among other things.“But there is no knife in this case and neither was there
any carcass or meat seized from the spot of the crime,” he added.Members of the
investigative team said that the police was preparing the closure report after thorough
investigation so that no loopholes could be pointed out by the complainants in
the case. the hindu

not convinced by India's claim that Pakistan is behind the Uri terror attack
which killed 18 army soldiers, even as the former is pushing India to remove
the military option, Pakistani media reported today. The reported developments

diplomatically and politically, warning that any military conflict would not
serve either side. It also read that Pakistan has conveyed to the US that it
does not wish to escalate tensions, but will hit back at "military

bloody battle to recapture the key city entered its fifth day. Dozens of air
strikes hit rebel-held areas of the northern Syrian city on Monday with the
UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights saying at least 12 people,
including 3 children, were killed. More than 280 people have died in the city's
rebel-held east since the offensive began on Thursday after a ceasefire ended
with at least 400 people wounded - including 61 children - on Sunday alone, a
doctors' group said. The Syrian govt offensive to recapture all of Aleppo - with
Russian air support and Iranian help on the ground - has been accompanied by
bombing that residents describe as unprecedented in its ferocity.Only 30
doctors now remain in Aleppo's east, where residents are in dire need of
medical and surgical supplies to treat the wounded among a trapped population
of 300,000. aljazeera
