Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to
float multi-religious Dharmik Morcha to counter communal polarisation
New Delhi: Buoyant at the
huge success of its recent nationwide Peace and Humanity campaign, India's
largest socio-religious organization Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has decided to float
a multi-religious front in order to counter the growing politically-motivated
communal polarisation in the country. Making announcement about the front
Dharmik Morcha at a press conference here on Tuesday, Maulana Syed Jalaluddin
Umari, national president of Jamaat said the front will have religious leaders
from different communities including Hindus and Muslims."Apart from the
Sadbhavana Manch which Jamaat is establishing in all of its 1200 units
spreading across the country, we have decided to set up a Dharmik Morcha also.
This front will have leaders from all prominent religions like Hindus, Muslims,
Christians, Sikhs and Jains," announced Maulana Umari during the monthly
press conference at Jamaat's HQRS.Dharmik Morcha is likely to be set up at both
state and local levels. Whenever any communal clash or violence erupts, the
front will be pressed into action to protect peace and communal harmony. While
Sadbhavana Manch will have eminent persons including social and human rights
activists of the locality, the Dharmik Morcha will have only religious figures.
"Objective of the campaign was to reach out to the people of the country
and remind them of the importance of nurturing the social fabric of our country
and preserving its communal harmony which is under threat by some communal and
anti-social elements," said Maulana Umari.Giving details about the success
of the campaign, Mohammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General of Jamaat said that
about 25 lakh people were directly reached through more than 10,000 public
events including conferences, press briefing and corner meetings across the
country. Through the social media platforms of Jamaat, around 15 crore people
were reached, he said. He also said that during the campaign itself, 170 units
of Sadbhavana Manch were set up in Telangana state alone. For several public
events during the campaign, Jamaat's local leaders had set up reception
committees. These committees had eminent local persons from different religious
communities. Moreover, as many as 135 people, mostly Hindus, were honoured with
communal harmony awards by the Jamaat for their remarkable contribution in
establishing peace and communal harmony in the country. Jamaat’s vice president Nusrat Ali had recently led a delegation to Nuh district in Haryana where last month, one Muslim couple was brutally killed and two young girls were gang-raped allegedly by robbers. Talking to pressmen,
Nusrat Ali said it seemed the crime was planned to provoke Muslims for
violence, but the local Muslims showing wisdom controlled the situation. Jamaat
delegation had visited the injured people at hospital, attended a Mahapanchayat
of Mewati Muslims and also visited the homes of the affected people. Jamaat
leaders assured all help to the victims. Indiatomorrow/ muslimmirror

Women’s group demands
complete ban on Shariah courts, abolish AIMPLB, Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan
New Delhi: A Muslim women’s
group on Tuesday demanded a complete ban on Sharia (religious) courts, saying
they can’t be allowed to function as a parallel judiciary in the name of
mediation, conciliation, speedy and less expensive justice. In an affidavit, the
Muslim Women’s Quest for Equality, which has petitioned the Supreme Court
against arbitrary triple talaq, also demanded that organisations such as the All
India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan
(BMMA)“should be abolished to save the country and Indian Muslims from the
clamp of fundamentalists/ activists having the ideology similar to Hafiz Saeed
and his organisation Jamat-ud-dawa (JuD).”“Some people and NGOs are misusing
the freedom given by the constitution. They want to keep Muslim education in
Muslim extremist’s hands, entirely free from the govt control,” the affidavit
said. Affidavit comes days after AIMPLB defended the practice of triple talaq,
saying it’s better to divorce a woman than kill her. Govt told the Supreme
Court that it would file its response to the petitions against triple talaq in
four weeks.“Shariah grants the right to divorce because men have greater power
of decision making. They are more likely to control emotions and not take a
hasty decision,” the board said in an affidavit. The affidavit of Muslim Women’s
Quest for Equality filed through advocate Farha Faiz said:“There should be a
complete change in madarsas education system and a Muslim university under govt
supervision is the urgent need to impart
religious as well as worldly education to the Muslims.”It accused Muslim
clerics of creating a gulf between country and Muslims and brainwashing Muslims
who always faced a dilemma “whether the country is above or the religion”.The
affidavit blamed vote bank politics, especially by Congress govts, for plight
of Muslims. Accusing Congress govts of dumping people in favour of clerics or
fundamentalists, it said they never encouraged Muslims to integrate.“We do not
believe in progressive or regressive interpretation of religion or codification
of Muslim Personal Law for we believe that in every community, there are
multiple realities of an identity, multiple practices of beliefs and pluralist envisions
of family structure,” said statement, from Hasina Khan,RoshniRina, Geeta Thatra

No Muslim judge in Supreme
Court, first time in 11 yrs
New Delhi: Since the
retirement of 2 Muslim judges this year, the Supreme Court has been functioning
without a judge from the community. This is the first time in 11 years, and
only the second instance in nearly 3 decades that SC has been without a Muslim
judge. The last time a Muslim was appointed to the SC bench was in 2012.
Justice MY Eqbal and Justice Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla, elevated
respectively in December and April that year, retired this year — Eqbal on
February 2 and Kalifulla on July 22. The wait for the next Muslim judge could
be prolonged due to the ongoing tussle between the Supreme Court and govt over
the procedure for appointment of judges. At present two high courts have Muslim
chief justices — Bihar’s CJ Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, a resident of Assam, retires
next October while Himachal’s CJ Mansoor Ahmad Mir, a resident of J&K,
retires in April 2017.A high court judge retires at 62, a Supreme Court judge
at 65. The SC has a maximum strength of 31 judges and currently has 28. Four
more judges will retire this year — Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice
Chockalingam Nagappan in October, followed by Justice Shiva Kirti Singh and
Justice Anil R Dave in November.Former Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan
expressed concern that the Supreme Court does not have a Muslim judge. “Hope it
gets a Muslim judge soon,” he said. “It’s not a question of their rights being
denied, it’s a question of proper representation of all religions, castes and
regions at the apex court. In many countries, special provisions are made to
ensure the proper representation of all regions, religions and communities at
national court.”Of the 196 retired and 28 present justices and chief justices
that have served in the SC,17 or 7.5% have been Muslims. Of these, 4 rose to
become CJI — M Hidayatullah, M Hameedullah Beg, AM Ahmadi and Altamas Kabir.First
woman judge of the SC was a Muslim: Justice M Fathima Beevi, who served from Oct.6,

Barelvi clerics meet
Rajnath, plan to take out peace march in Kashmir, say sufism is the only way
forward in Kashmir
New Delhi: A delegation of
Muslim clerics of the Barelvi school Met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singhon
Tuesday on the Kashmir issue and urged him to lead a delegation of Sufi
scholars to the Valley while offering to take out a peace march there
themselves."We Met Home Minister Rajnath Singhand proposed that he should
lead a delegation of Sufi scholars and clerics to Kashmir. We would try to
instil some sense in the minds of stone pelting youths," Maulana Ansar
Razaof Garib Nawaz Foundation, who led the delegation, told IANS.Raza said the
60-odd Sufis from various khanqahs across India plan to take out a peace march
in Kashmir with the Quran in one hand and the 'Tiranga' (Nationaltricolour) in the
other. He stressed that Sufism is the way forward in Kashmir."Sufism is
the path of love and forgiveness. We would speak with the stone-pelting youth,
and would try to convince them in the light of Quran, Hadith and traditions of
great Sufi saints to abandon violence," Raza said. He, however, dismissed
the prospect of any talks with separatists."How can we talk to people who
are raising 'Pakistan zindabad' slogans? We are very clear that we would not go
at their doorstep only to be turned away by them, like they did to a handful of
people recently," he said.Calling the members of all-party delegation who
went to meet Hurriyat leaders on Monday as "chai khor", Raza said
that they should not have broken away from the delegation and gone to meet the
separatists."Why should we go to them? Kashmiri kahwa tou Dilli me bhi
milta hai (Kashmiri kahwa is available in Delhi too)," he said.Supporting govt's
stance on Kashmir, including to review the facilities given to separatist
leaders, Raza said that a solution would certainly come out. The clerics also
hit out at Syed Ali Shah Geelani for seeking a connection with Pakistan saying
Islam links Kashmir to Pakistan. The proposed group for the 'aman yatra'
comprises clerics from Dargah Ajmer Sharif, Bareilly Sharif, Haji Ali in Mumbai
and Hazrat Nizamuddin in New Delhi among others. IANS/India Today

Kashmir unrest: Opposition

New Delhi: Leaders of
Opposition parties, who were part of the all-party delegation that travelled to
Srinagar and Jammu, are likely to press the govt to come up with “concrete” proposals to reach
out to the Valley when Home Minister Rajnath Singh chairs a follow-up meeting
of the team Wednesday. Some in the Opposition say the very fact that at least 3
separatist leaders met some members of the delegation — Hurriyat leader Syed
Ali Shah Geelani was the one who refused to meet them — needs to be taken as
the starting point to engage separatists and bring to an end the unrest in the
Valley since the July 8 killing of militant Burhan Wani.CPI leader D Raja, who
was part of the delegation, said only Geelani did not meet them. “The others,
Yasin Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Shabir Shah met us. They said they have
taken a decision not to discuss any issue. But they thanked us. And they were
not hostile to the delegation,” Raja said. While in Srinagar, Raja along with
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, JD(U)’s Sharad Yadav and RJD’s Jay Prakash
Narayan Yadav had met Malik, Mirwaiz and Shah. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi
had separately met Mirwaiz and Shah. indianexpress

They [the Centre] never officially invited us and at the same time blame us for
rejecting it [the invitation],” said Tehreek-e-Hurriyat founder Syed Ali Shah
Geelani. He accused the Centre of playing a game to win only. “It was aimed at
discrediting us. India is scared of any meaningful dialogue with the Hurriyat
and Pakistan,” said Geelani. On Singh’s remarks that the separatists’ behaviour
defied Kashmiriyat, insaaniyat [humanity] and jamhooriyat [democracy], Geelani
said: “Visiting delegations should have gone around the length and breadth of J&K
to witness for themselves the ‘gifts’ of Indian democracy.”Chairman of the

Agra Hindu girl gives free
Quran lessons to Muslim kids
An 18-year-old girl in
Agra, UP, has truly broken the arbitrary boundaries that are imposed in the
name of religion by teaching the Quran to Muslim children of disadvantaged
backgrounds. Pooja Kushwaha became interested in learning Arabic after she came
in contact with a woman called Sangeeta Begum who taught the Holy Scripture to
kids in her locality. Soon after she started attending Sangeeta Begum’s
classes, Pooja did so well that she was able to stay ahead of the rest of the
students. So, when Begum was unable to continue her classes, she requested
Pooja to fill in for her. At first, Pooja started free lessons at her house because
most of her students were from poor families. Later when the increasing number
of students could not be accommodated at her place, she accepted the offer to
shift her class to a temple. Now Pooja teaches the Quran to around 35 Muslim
students in an open-air classroom at the temple. Her efforts have been greatly
appreciated by parents and prominent Muslim leaders in the area, according to

Lucknow: 3 years after the

of the 511 cases probed by SIT constituted by the state govt a fortnight after the communal flare-up.In
all, trials have been completed in 5 cases in which 39 people were named as
accused. 2 of these cases were related to murder, one to gang-rape and 2 to
dacoity and arson. All 39 accused are out on bail. The acquittals came after
the complainant or the key witnesses turned hostile in court. Of 1,475 arrested
in connection with the riot cases, around 30 are in jail while the others are
out on bail, said senior police officials.ASP Muzaffarnagar, Vinod Pandey, who

are investigating the cases on priority basis but in some cases, the victims
were allegedly murdered but their bodies could not be traced. Probe in such
cases usually takes time," he said. Of the 511 FIRs that SIT probed,
closure reports were filed in 159 cases while another 169 were expunged. The
cases relate to murders in which 24 people were allegedly killed but bodies of
11 victims are yet to be traced.NGOs working in Muzaffarnagar have been

In wake of attacks, RSS
shakhas see sudden disappearance of Dalits
Dalit unrest over the last
few months have done more than just cloud the BJP’s electoral prospects in
upcoming Assembly elections. They have also left a large number of RSS shakhas
devoid of Dalit members. Several such branches had been started in lower-caste
localities across north and western India after Narendra Modi became PM in
2014. Phenomenon is glaring in Maharashtra and Gujarat, where Dalits recently
took to streets to register their protest against attacks by a
Hindutva-inspired group. It is also very evident in UP and Punjab, where
Assembly elections are due early next year. Dalits have significantly
disappeared from RSS shakhas in Bihar and Haryana. This has undermined the
massive drive launched by the RSS to spread its presence among people belonging
to the lower castes.“New shakhas in Dalit localities were started because we
had noticed that shakhas in upper-caste localities were not being able to
attract Dalit men,” said a senior office-bearer of the RSS from Meerut. “For
some time there was a lot of enthusiasm, and a significant number of young men
started attending shakhas in Dalit localities. But now, despite our karyakartas
trying hard, most of these shakhas have become a farce.” Scroll.com

Tamil Nadu Camel slaughter
ban: Mixed response
Chennai: Madras High
Court’s recent order refusing to permit camel slaughter in Tamil Nadu during
the Bakrid festival has evoked mixed reactions among Islamic outfits and animal
rights activists. Opposing verdict, MH Jawahirullah, president, MMK, said that
the verdict would be challenged in the Supreme Court since it impinges on the
rights of Muslims to practice their faith.“According to Islam, Muslims can
sacrifice a bull, goat or a camel for Bakrid. It is one of the obligations of
Muslims. How can a Muslim, who wants to sacrifice a camel, be barred from doing
it?” he asked, adding “We will challenge it.”According to him, the ban
contradicts Article 25 of the Constitution, which states that “all persons are
equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess,
practise and propagate religion.”Countering his views, senior leader of Indian
Union Muslim League Kader Mohideen said that several Muslim organisations are
calling for ‘camel slaughter’ because they have ‘misunderstood Islam’. thehindu

Iranian
elites slam Revolutionary Guards’ regional policy
Opposition
reformists in Iran have criticised the regional policy adopted by the
Revolutionary Guards Corps. Political and Media Green Movement Network made its
comments in a statement published on a local website, claiming that the “first step to reform the political edifice in Iran would be to reform its
foreign policy. The statement pointed out that it is obvious to all Iranians
that their country is passing through a crisis in the region and in the wider
world. This, claims the elite network, is rooted in the incompetence and
corruption suffered by the Islamic Republic. “This regime was born out of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and it was the outcome of the dedication and sacrifices of many Iranians
for the sake of achieving national and historic demands such as independence,
freedom, justice and progress.” However,
it is claimed, in recent years all of these sacrifices have been lost for the
sake of a power game. “The
opportunists exploited the trust of the Iranian people and brought the country
to this phase of havoc.” Whereas other countries try to find new friends in an increasingly cohesive
world, the opposition movement says, the Revolutionary Guards are involved in a
dangerous game in confrontation with Saudi Arabia through providing political,
economic, media and military support to the Houthis in Yemen, which is, rightly
or wrongly, Saudi Arabia’s back
yard.“ Furthermore, full support has been given to the Ba’thist regime of Bashar Al-Assad,” the network says, “and
there is a large number of Iranian military forces on the front line against
the Syrian opposition but Iran has been unable achieve anything tangible.” Is such an expensive intervention in Syria serving Iranian interests, it
wonders. The obvious Iranian presence in Iraq and the support provided to
specific Shia groups in the war against Daesh have caused internal ethnic and
religious conflicts and led to the spread of hostile positions toward Iran
among the Iraqi people, the critics note. “So much so,” in
fact, “that
such hostility has even appeared among the Shia. Similar unconditional support
given to the Shia opposition in Bahrain makes up the 4 most conspicuous
examples of moves made by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in their obvious
interference in Iran’s
foreign policy. The critics point out that the people of Iran are unhappy that
the national budget is being “squandered” on maintaining influence in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon at a time when citizens
have to make tough economic choices. No one, they claim, approves of this use
of vital funds to pay Afghani and Iraqi mercenaries, who everyone knows are in
Syria solely because Iran is paying them to be there.Pointing out that similar
efforts have been made in the past, the movement recalled the expansionist
policy of the former Shah of Iran, Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, whose policy promoted
the theory that Iran was the regional policeman. middleeastmonitor

and, in the end, his fight for personal political survival” that had caused the
400,000 deaths estimated by the UN in the country. He added “even” Russia
accepted the need for transition in Syria’s political leadership.anadolu agency
