officer in giving a clean chit to the NGO last year based on inspection of its
accounts in 2014.Though the clean chit did not pass muster at the higher levels

seeking discussion on it - the circumstances under which the all-clear was
proposed may be inquired into. Also likely to be scrutinised is the assistant

Muzaffarnagar riot victims
lodge complaint against NHRC’s Kairana ‘exodus’ report
Meerut: A Kandhla-based
NGO, Afkar India Foundation (AIF), on Sunday lodged a formal complaint on
behalf of riot-displaced families against the NHRC report on the alleged exodus
of Hindu families from Kairana. AIF lodged the complaint on the official NHRC
website, objecting to "point no. 18" of the report, which claimed
that the demographic profile of Kairana changed after the riots and blamed
worsening law and order situation in the western UP town on the influx of
refugees. The complaint claimed that the NHRC has "exaggerated" the
number of riot-displaced persons settled in Kairana and has offered no proof
that rising crime is directly linked to riot refugees."I raised 3 crucial
questions in the complaint. First, there is no clarity on what the proof is.
There is no conclusive evidence that links refugees to the rise in crime. The
NHRC team did not even look at FIRs filed in Kairana police station. If the
FIRs are examined, they will find that none of the gangs are run by riot
refugees. In fact, the most wanted list at Kairana police station has people
from all religions and castes. It is not only wrong to link crime to one
community, it is also dangerous," said Akram Akhtar, project manager at
AIF. timesofindia

Kutba (Muzaffarnagar): The

locked. The muezzin’s call for prayers is no longer heard. Many Muslims have
left and those who remain are slowly coming to terms with the loss.Kutba
village in Muzaffarnagar — the home of Union minister of state Sanjeev Baliyan
— struggles to erase memories of the September 2013 Hindu-Muslim riots. They
are also fearful of what the elections due in 2017 will bring. From Dadri to
Kairana, communal tensions have been simmering in parts of Uttar Pradesh over
issues such as beef and forced migration, and Kutba is fearful of the communal
divide widening again in a politically charged scenario. Its fears are rooted in
the attack on 900 Muslim families here, that led to eight deaths. Three years
later, the village is also a symbol of the possible polarisation in the
forthcoming UP elections. Those who left will vote one way; those who stayed
may vote another. But in the midst of this division, the doors for
reconciliation are slowly opening.Alijaan comes to the village occasionally to
see the hamlet where he was born and grew up. For decades, he was a symbol of
communal harmony. Jats depended on him to keep their farming equipment sharp.
