Bijnor killings unfolded:
total 20 injured in gun fire, 3 succumbed to injuries
Bijnor(UP):Friday morning started like any
other for Sadikan and her family. The elders of the household were having
breakfast while the younger ones were playing in the small compound of their
home after finishing their meal. The household is home to families of 6
brothers, named Anees-ud-din, Zulfikar Ahmed, Raes, Ehsan, Irfan and Furkan,
who have been living in Peda Peda village of Bijnor in UP for decades. While
Zulfikar had passed away two years ago, Anees, his younger brother Ehsan and
Zulfikar's son were among those who died here on Friday in a communal clash. The
family's one-story house was an integral part of the village and quite a
popular one too, owing to the number of residents living there. Out of more
than 30 people in the family, 18 are children. The family had unanimously
decided to send two of their girls for education as it wouldn't have been
possible for everyone to study. Little did they know that on that fateful
Friday, everything would change for the family.Between 7 and 7.30 am, 16-year
old girl left home accompanied by her cousin brother Talib, only to be stopped
by some youth midway. The youth allegedly harassed the girl by passing lewd
comments, prompting her cousin to protest. The matter was briefly resolved by
village elders, but as news spread, the father and uncle of the girl took the
protest to one Sansaar Singh and the village head named Dilwar Singh who
swiftly abused them. A heated argument ensued between the two groups, but what
came after the argument has sent shivers down the spines of people who live in
the area.Accessing police documents and on the basis of eye witness accounts,
dna has learnt that as soon as the second round of arguments ensued, the group
of youth who had allegedly harassed the minor girl, started mobilising people
from their village as well as a neighbouring one. "A mob of more than 50
people gathered, some of whom were armed with revolvers," said Aslam, the
uncle who had intervened on behalf of his harassed niece.According to family
members, the mob first entered their house and started beating anyone they
found, including women and children. With most of the men having breakfast on
the balcony of the house, everyone in ground floor rushed upstairs for
help."Everyone converged towards the balcony and that's when they started
firing. The shooters had already positioned themselves in neighbouring houses
and were waiting for us to come to the balcony so they could have a better view
of us while they shoot," said Khushnama, a family member. Imrana, mother
of the harassed girl said, "It was a bloodbath. They did not spare our
one-year-old Hinsa, neither did they have mercy on Ehsan Bhai who is
handicapped." Ehsan's son-in-law Rizwan was also shot at and is said to be
in a serious condition. A total of 20 people were injured in the gun fire, out
of whom three succumbed to their injuries. The assault however did not end with
the firing. The balcony was covered with broken bricks which the family claimed
were thrown by attackers who were not armed. "They rained some bricks
before going on a shooting spree. When they ran out of bullets, they threw more
bricks, even as our dead family members were lying in a pool of blood,"
said Aslam. The attack finally concluded with the mob burning down a motorcycle
and a small shop owned by the family. "The abuses, the yelling and
laughing and the gun fire, these are things that will haunt me forever, along
with the lifeless bodies of our family members," Khushnama said. DNA

Muslim Man beaten to death
by gau rakshaks in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad:Cow vigilantism
claimed yet another life in Gujarat, this time in Ahmedabad. A 29-year-old man,
who was allegedly beaten up by gau rakshaks four days ago, succumbed to his
injuries at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Friday. As the news of the death spreads,
a steady stream of people have been gathering outside the V.S. Hospital. Police
officials too have been stationed at the hospital in anticipation of a law and
order situation. Mohammad Ayyub was allegedly attacked by a group of cow
vigilantes on Tuesday, a day after Bakri Eid, when he and his friend Sameer
Sheikh were bringing a cow and a calf to Ahmedabad, police said."People
are saying that they found a cow in the car but that doesn't mean that they
should take the law in their hands," said Rozar Khan, Ayyub's uncle. In the
wee hours of Tuesday, Ayyub's car had a collision with another car on the
highway, leading to the death of the calf, police said.Ayyub, who was also
injured in the accident, tried to flee but was chased by a group of men and
beaten up, police said. His friend Sheikh, however, was saved by a policeman who
was on duty nearby.Police first registered a complaint of accident. Later, a
complaint was filed by 3 gau rakshaks against Ayyub and Sheikh for illegally transporting
the animals.Later, on scanning the CCTV footage, the police saw that the duo
were beaten up by some men. Following this, they registered another complaint
against those who were thrashing the two. Ayyub's family claimed that the three
gau rakshaks are among those who attacked Ayyub and Sheikh. Police, however,
said that there was no evidence to suggest the same. India today

Madrassa principal
prevented riot after `gau rakshak' attack
New Delhi: A madrassa
principal's refusal to be swayed by emotion prevented a communal riot in west
Delhi's Prem Nagar on Wednesday night.Ali Rukman, the 52-yearold principal, was
worried and angry after learning that his son-in-law Hafiz Abdul Khalid and
another man, Ali Hasan, had been ruthlessly beaten up by cow vigilantes while
carting out buffalo remains from the previous day's Eid-ul-Zuha sacrifice. But
when a mob started gathering to avenge the attack, Rukman told them clearly it
was a matter for him and his family to sort it out and the others should keep
out of it."Before I settled here 25 years ago, I had seen enough clashes
in my native Gorakhpur to know how riots start and how they end with losses on
both sides. I did not want any more people to get hurt," Rukman told TOI
on Friday. Two days after the attack, Rukman said it seemed premeditated and
might have been part of a plot to start a riot."Whatever happened was the
handiwork of miscreants who are now hiding behind a religious group," said
Rukman."We were anticipating something of this kind," said Mohammad
Ikram, a teacher at the Prem Nagar madrassa. Tension built up quickly when
14-year-old Ab dus Salam, who was travelling with Khalid and Hasan, ran panting
to the colony and broke the news around 7.30pm. timesofindia

Haryana: HC to hear plea
against 'biryani policing'
Chandigarh:The
controversial “Biryani policing” in Haryana has reached the Punjab and Haryana
High Court in Chandigarh. A petition has been filed in the high court seeking
to restrict such policing measures that target roadside vendors on the
suspicion that they serve beef in Biryani. Cow slaughter, sale and consumption
of beef in Haryana is banned and invites punishment of up to 10 years and fine.
Ahead of Bakrid, the Haryana police team had conducted raids and collected
samples of biryani being served by vendors in Haryana’s Mewat district. As a
consequence, many of them reportedly shut down the vends. The samples were sent
for testing. Mewat is the only Muslim-dominated area in Haryana. deccanherald
‘Report on Mewat biryani
samples can’t be used as legal document’
Gurgaon:The report of 7
biryani samples collected from Mewat has confirmed the presence of “meat of
cattle species” in each of them, but said the document is not for “vetro-legal
purposes”, holding the police back from filing a case.Mewat police officials
were seeking a second opinion from the lab authorities on whether “meat of
cattle species” specifically meant beef, official sources said. The police will
also seek clarity about the vetro-legal status of the report, according to a
senior government official. Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act
2015 defines beef as “flesh of cow in any form including contained in sealed
containers and imported in the state”. The Act makes cow slaughter punishable
with rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The samples,
collected in first week of this month from Mundaka village of Ferozepur Jhirka
tehsil, were tested at Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal
Sciences, Hisar. HT accessed, through govt sources, contents of the one-page
report that is yet to be made public.A report mentioning “not for vetro-legal
purposes” or “not for medico-legal purposes” cannot be used in legal process
and has no standing in the court of law. It also means the medical staff who
conducted test will not come to the court for evidence.A few social
organisations had also raised questions over the validity of the report for
vetro-legal purposes.Mewat SP Kuldeep Singh denied having received the report.HT
Tamil Nadu: 1 arrested, 10
booked for killing camel in moving truck
Madurai: A truck driver was
arrested on Thursday evening in connection with the killing of a camel which
was brought to the city recently for Bakrid sacrifice. The arrest was
necessitated as the killing took place despite a statewide ban on camel
slaughter effected by the Madras high court in August. Ten more people,
including the camel owner were booked in connection with the incident.Tension
prevailed in Nelpettai, a Muslim-dominant area from the day the camel was
brought to the city for slaughtering during the recent Bakrid festival. Police
restrained the owner, Adham Bawa and three more people who brought camels into
the city, citing the recent high court order. While three of the camels were
taken out of the district, Bawa was determined to sacrifice the animal.
However, city police did not allow it. Though they tried to take the camel into
their custody, the jamath leaders pacified them assuring that it would not be
sacrificed. timesofindia
Maha housing society bars
sale of flat to Muslim man
Mumbai: 11 residents of a
Vasai housing society with 16 flats have objected to the sale of one of the
flats to a Muslim family. At a meeting on September 4, the residents also
passed a resolution to keep Muslims out of the building inhabited mostly by
Gujarati-speaking residents. Two Muslim families who live in the society were
away when the meeting was held. The decision, supported by the majority of the
members of Happy Jivan Co-operative Housing Society, was communicated through a
letter to Kantaben Patel (55) and her son Jignesh Patel (32), who wished to
sell their flat to Muslim glass merchant Vikarahmed Khan and his family. Signed
by 11 members, the letter stated, "It is learnt that you intend to sell
your flat to some Muslim guy. We feel that you should not do so..." The
Patels were also advised to sell their flat to "any other person,
preferably within our community".Patels have now shot off letters to the
sub-registrar of housing societies, as well as police with complaints about the
society's "high-handedness". The Patels had finalised the sale of
their 710sqft first-floor flat to Khan (35), who has already paid a token sum
of Rs 1 lakh. Khan had sought a NOC from the society to apply for a loan.
"We decided to sell our flat to Khan as he offered the price we quoted.

What is the harm if surya
namaskar is introduced in civic schools, ask Bombay HC
Mumbai:What is the harm if
the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) makes surya namaskar – sun
salutation - mandatory for students of civic schools in Mumbai, the Bombay high
court sought to know on Friday. The query came from division bench of Chief
Justice Manjula Chellur and justice MS Sonak after advocate Anjali Awasthi
mentioned a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by her on behalf of Kurla
resident Masood Ansari, challenging the resolution passed by the general body
of the BMC on August 26, making surya namaskar mandatory for civic students. The
bench felt surya namaskar was a form of exercise and there was nothing wrong if
such an activity was made mandatory for students of civic schools. The judges
said there are various kinds of yogasanas and it will be necessary to find out
which kind is selected by the civic body and if it was appropriate for
children. Responding to a court query, Awasthi said surya namaskar involves 12
different asanas that are supposed to be done on an empty stomach, and students
up to 14 years of age cannot be expected to go to school without eating
anything. Besides, she said, the BMC resolution also makes it mandatory for
students to chant various mantras and since there are students from various
religious faiths, it may not be religiously appropriate for certain students. The
bench has now posted the PIL for hearing in the last week of this month. hindustantimes

Protests erupt in Kashmir
after pellet firing by security forces kills child
Fresh clashes erupted in
Harwan, on the outskirts of Srinagar, after people thronged the streets to
participate in the funeral prayers of an 11-year-old schoolboy on Saturday,
whose pellet-ridden body was found late last night. Nasir Shafi Qazi ,
nicknamed Momin, the youngest of three siblings, went missing soon after
protesters in the New Theed village of Harwan were chased by security forces.
Local residents found his body after news spread that he had gone missing. Over
5,000 people defied curfew-like restrictions in New Theed village to offer
funeral prayers for Nasir, a witness was quoted as saying to Greater Kashmir.
Mourners shouted slogans in favour of Islam and independence as they marched
with the body of Shafi. The unrest in the Valley that began following the
killing of militant commander Burhan Wani on July 8 has now claimed 86 lives,

Kashmir journalists seek
PCI intervention against 'gag'
Srinagar(PTI) Journalist
fraternity in Kashmir today sought the Press Council of India's intervention
for lifting a "gag" imposed by authorities here by snapping internet
facilities, saying it was a "serious infringement" of freedom of
expression and right to information."An unprecedented situation has
emerged since Sept. 12, as the state decided to snap all internet services
after suspending mobile telephony. This undeclared gag has left journalists
completely grounded," said a joint letter from four working journalist

‘Section of Indian media
misleading nation about happenings in Kashmir’: Journalist team from New Delhi
says Kashmiris alienated
Srinagar:3-member team of
journalists from New Delhi which was in Srinagar recently on a “study tour” to
assess the ground situation, have returned a firm impression that Kashmir are
alienated from New Delhi and people from all walks of life are involved in the
ongoing agitation. The visiting journalists have also acknowledged the fact that
a section of Indian media is mis-reporting Kashmir situation to malign the
truth about the present unrest in the Valley. Team members spent three days in
Srinagar including the day of Eid, meeting hundreds of people from different
walks of life. The guest journalists were headed by Santosh Bhartiya, editor of
“Chauthi Duniya” newspaper. The other 2 members of the panel were Ashok
Wankhade, a political analyst at ABP Channel and Managing Editor “Urban Update”
magazine and Abay Kumar Dubey, a political analyst at ABP Channel and a
professor at Centre for Studies for Development Societies (CSDS) New Delhi.“We
have fully understood that this is an indigenous freedom movement going on in
Kashmir. There may be some involvement of Pakistan to create the unrest but the
fact is common people of Kashmir are deeply alienated due to the indifferent
attitude of New Delhi towards Kashmir and the people of the state. The people
of Kashmir have been sacrificing hugely and they are even ready to face the
worst for the cause of Aazadi,” Santosh Bhartiya said in an interview after
concluding his 3-day study tour along with his 2 associates. The visiting
journalists met Hurriyat leader Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, leaders of some
mainstream political parties, members of civil society and several trade
leaders during their stay in Srinagar. Hurriyat (G) leader Syed Ali Geelani had
approved a meeting with the New Delhi based journalist at his Hyderpora
residence, where he is under house arrest, but the police did not allow the
journalist team to enter Geelani’s house. However, journalists later had half an
hour telephonic conversation with Geelani.“We listened to Professor Bhat for
about two hours. He was talking sense and logic. He is for a peaceful
resolution of political issue of Kashmir and he wants the centre government to
come out from the denial mode,” Santosh said.Geelani had invited us to his home
but police did not allow us to meet him. Then we talked to him on phone for
about half an hour, he added.“Geelani Sahib told us how and why the Kashmiris
have lost faith in dialogue with New Delhi. He believes that talks with centre
have proved futile during all these years because the successive govts in Delhi
have never been serious to resolve the issue.”After meeting scores of people
and witnessing the ground zero situation in the Valley, the visiting
journalists said that a section of Indian media is “misleading the nation about
happenings in Kashmir by their false reporting.”“This is unfortunate that a few
news channels in New Delhi are misreporting Kashmir situation.By false
reporting they are giving an impression that every second Kashmiri is a
Pakistani agent. We spent three days here. We met hundreds of people but did
not see even a single person whom we could call a Pakistani agent. The fact is
that every common Kashmiri wants New Delhi to initiate a dialogue process to find
a peaceful political resolution to the issue. Even Kashmiri knows that no
solution can be found in one night but they still want a process of a serious
dialogue be started,” Santosh said, adding, “New Delhi has no other option to
listen to the people of Kashmir. Their wishes cannot be suppressed by use of
force.”GreaterKashmir

Pakistan hits back at
India’s human rights record
Geneva:Pakistan on Saturday

to expose the country in the world over the “abysmal rights situation” in other
parts if it continued to talk about Balochistan.Pakistan said the sudden Indian
focus on Balochistan was consistent with their “playbook of seeking to distract
attention from the repression unleashed in Kashmir.”Pakistan’s delegation to
the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) strongly rebutted India’s
“untenable stance” on Jammu and Kashmir and slammed its “persistent
interference” in Balochistan.“In strongly-worded right of replies, the Pakistan
delegate termed India’s attempts to deny its illegal occupation of Jammu and
Kashmir a ‘travesty of history’,” Pakistan Foreign Office said. The delegate
said Pakistan was not surprised by the “intemperate” remarks of the Indian
leadership and the Indian delegation, which constitute “open interference in
Pakistan’s internal affairs, especially in Balochistan.”“The increasing
international attention being given to the plight of the Kashmiri people is
being desperately countered by New Delhi by attempting to shift attention
elsewhere,” it said.Given the “persistent, irresponsible flouting of
international norms governing inter-state behaviour by India, we are
constrained to point out the abysmal human rights record of the Indian
government,” the Foreign Office said. The delegate referred to a bill in Indian
Parliament seeking to penalise those who depict Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed
territory and said “this was yet another pathetic effort to alter facts to
conform to their own deluded sense of reality.”The delegate pointed out the
“egregious violations” of human rights of people in large swathes of India and
that Pakistan had scrupulously avoided commenting on India’s internal human

Samajawadi chief Shivpal Yadav, appeals supporters to withdraw protest
Lucknow:Forced to climb
down, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Saturday signaled rapproachment with uncle
Shivpal Yadav as he promised to support him as SP’s state unit president, a
post from which he was himself removed three days back bringing the family feud
in the open. At the same time, Akhilesh asserted that he should have a role in
deciding candidates for next year’s Assembly polls, on a day when hundreds of
people came out in his support which was disapproved of by party chief Mulayam Singh
Yadav.“I have myself congratulated SP’s UP unit president Shivpal Yadav after
meeting him at his residence…. I will extend all my support to Shivpalji,”
Akhilesh told reporters here, indicating rapproachment with his uncle with whom
he was engaged in a turf war. His remarks came a day after he said he felt
“very sad” when he was replaced with Shivpal as the state party president by
his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.Earlier, Akhilesh had stripped Shivpal of key
portfolios, as a result of which his uncle had tendered resignation from the
ministry as well as party post. Last night, after Mulayam’s intervention,
Akhilesh announced that Shivpal will be given back his portfolios and Gayatri
Prajapati will be reinducted as Cabinet minister, issues which had triggered an
all-out war between the two.PTI

Muslims are most disliked
group in America: study
Muslims are the most
disapproved group in America, according to a new study, amid increasing
anti-Muslim rhetoric from conservative politicians.A new study from
sociologists at the University of Minnesota, which analysed Americans’ perceptions
of minority faith and racial groups, found that their disapproval of Muslims
has almost doubled from about 26 per cent 10 years ago to 45.5 per cent in
2016.Amid increasing focus on immigration, refugees and national security and
in the wake of multiple terrorist attacks around the world, the study found
that almost half of those surveyed would not want their child to marry a
Muslim, compared to just 33.5 per cent of people a decade earlier. The report
found that anti-Muslim violence spiked after the attacks on the Twin Towers in
2001, as did attacks on Sikh Americans, who are often confused with Muslim
Americans."Even the generally tolerant millennials exhibit relatively
strong anti-Muslim sentiments," the report read.Hussein Rashid, a professor
at Barnard College in New York, told Religion News that the spike in
intolerance is reflected by current political rhetoric."In 10 years,
people have a more negative perception of Muslims, Jews, gays, Latinos, and
Blacks," he said.

Pakistan may be building
new nuclear site, strengthening its arsenal
Islamabad:Pakistan,
estimated to have the world’s fastest-growing nuclear stockpile, could be
building a new uranium enrichment complex according to commercial satellite
imagery analysed by Western defence experts. The construction of a new site,
based in the town of Kahuta some thirty kilometres east of Islamabad, provides
fresh evidence of how Pakistan is seeking to boost its atomic arsenal -- a goal
which is inconsistent with the principles of the Nuclear Suppliers Group the
country is seeking to join, said the analysis. The analysis was conducted by IHS
Jane’s Intelligence review using satellite images taken by Airbus Defence and
Space on 28 September, 2015 and then again on 18 April, 2016.Pakistan, which
conducted its first nuclear tests in 1998 is believed to have around 120
nuclear weapons, more than India, Israel and North Korea.AFP
Syria's civil war:
Ceasefire strained by fresh fighting
Air raids and fighting tested
a fragile ceasefire in Syria into Saturday as civilians waited for aid and
tensions mounted between Russia and the United States, who brokered the truce. In
New York, the UN Security Council cancelled an urgent meeting on Friday that
had been called to discuss whether to endorse the deal, billed as the
"last chance" to end a five-year war that has killed hundreds of
thousands of people and forced millions from the country. The closed-door
consultations were scrapped after Moscow and Washington failed to agree on how
to disclose details of the ceasefire to the council.US Secretary of State John
Kerry had earlier called his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov and condemned
"repeated and unacceptable delays of humanitarian aid," State
Department spokesman John Kirby said.Kerry told Lavrov that Washington expected
Russia to use its influence on the government of President Bashar al-Assad to
press it to allow UN aid convoys to reach Aleppo and other areas, according to
Kirby."The secretary made clear that the US will not establish the Joint
Implementation Centre with Russia unless and until the agreed terms for
humanitarian access are met," Kirby said, referring to a deal to set up a
joint committee to enable the US and Russia to coordinate attacks on the ISIL
and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham armed groups. The ceasefire has been marred by a lack
of aid deliveries and sporadic violence, in which three civilians were killed
on Friday. If the truce, which began on Monday , lasts seven days and aid access
is granted, Russia and the US say they will work together to target ISIL, also
known as ISIS, and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, the group formerly known as al-Nusra
Front.Under the deal, Moscow must put pressure on Assad and Washington must
work with the Syrian rebels it supports to silence their guns.Earlier on
Friday, Russia said that only Moscow and the Syrian government were fulfilling
the deal. aljazeera
