Bombay Lawyers Association moves SC seeking
review of Loya order

Delhi:Bombay Lawyers Association has approached the Supreme Court seeking
review of its judgment dismissing its plea for an independent probe into the
death of CBI special judge BH Loya. The petition settled by senior advocate
Dushyant Dave also sought deletion of the court’s findings in the judgment that
the petitions were a “veiled attempt to launch a frontal attack on the
independence of the judiciary and to dilute the credibility of judicial
institutions”. It contended that the “judgment has resulted in miscarriage of
justice if not complete negation of justice on the facts of the case”.A 3-judge
bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud had on
April 19 dismissed the petition along with certain others with similar prayers.
The court ruled that “documentary material on the record indicates that the
death of Judge Loya was due to natural causes”. Association had originally
filed its petition seeking a probe before the Bombay HC. The SC subsequently
transferred the plea to itself. The lawyers’ body said its attempt was not to
“sensationalise the subject matter nor make a veiled attempt to launch a
frontal attack on the independence of the judiciary or to dilute the
credibility of judicial institutions”. “On the contrary, the whole attempt of
the Petitioner Association was to reassure the entire judiciary that the
Association would stand behind every Judge in times of challenge in his or her
life. The effort was for an independent enquiry to reassure all Members of Judiciary
and nothing more. If the enquiry was ordered as prayed for and if it found that
Judge Loya had indeed died of heart attack it would have set all doubts to rest
but it would have sent a strong message to the Judiciary and to the country
that individuals are willing to stand up for the judiciary and not desert it in
time of challenge. As against that if enquiry had found some foul play it would
have truly been a great service to the independence and impartiality of
Judiciary and its Members.Either way the efforts of the Petitioner Association
were to uphold the dignity and independence of judiciary and not otherwise,” it
said. The review petition said the Association was only questioning the
veracity of the discreet enquiry report prepared by the Commissioner of
Intelligence, Maharashtra Police, on the death and that was in no way to malign

Police in Gujarat arrested four people on
Monday for allegedly beating a Dalit man to death near Rajkot city on suspicion
of theft, an official said.State legislator Jignesh Mevani identified the
victim as Mukesh Vaniya, sharing a purported video of the torture on social
media sites. He said the victim’s wife too was “brutally beaten up”.Vaniya, 40,
his wife, Jaya, and another person, Savita, were collecting trash near a
factory on the outskirts of Rajkot when they were attacked on Sunday, police
said.Vaniya, who was from the Limbdi area in Surendranagar district, had shifted
to the industrial belt of Shaper last week.“A case of murder and atrocity has
been registered against five persons,” DSP DM Chauhan said.Police arrested Chirag Vora,
Divyesh Vora, Jayshukh Radadiya and Tejas Zala, who work at the factory. Fifth
accused, who is a minor, too was detained. The suspects also hit the women, who
managed to escape from the spot, police said. They returned with others to
rescue Vaniya, who died on the way to a hospital in Rajkot, which is about 200km

Delhi eatery owner Shahbuddin killed for
refusing to serve food for free
New Delhi:A 30-year-old food stall owner was
stabbed to death near his shop in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar on Friday after he
refused to serve free food to local goons. One of the accused was arrested from
the spot, police said.The victim’s, Shahbuddin, family said they had informed
the police five days back about the incident when the accused had harassed him
over food and had left without paying. The incident happened at 10.30pm when
Shahbuddin was on his way to meet a friend after shutting his stall at Ajeet
Nagar. He was waylaid by four men, two of whom were identified as Mohit and
Sunil Pandey. He got into an argument with them following which they called in
two others, and together stabbed Shahbuddin seven times on the chest and
abdomen.Hearing Shahbuddin’s cries, his family which lived nearby, rushed out
and took him to a hospital where he died. Shahbuddin’s cousin Mohammad Arshad,
who ran the food stall along with him, alleged that earlier as well, the youths
had visited their shop, had food and left without paying.Shahbuddin had
registered a complaint with the local police following which the youths were

Delhi Minorities Commission issues notice to
police, RWA on alleged assault on Kashmiri woman
New Delhi: Delhi Minorities Commission has
issued notices to police and a resident welfare association (RWA), seeking
reports about alleged assault on a Kashmiri woman and her relatives earlier
this month.Commission's chairman, Zafarul Islam Khan said notices were issued
in the recent incident on May 10 when four women were allegedly roughed up by a
mob of around 30 to 40 people. A police case was registered following the
complaint from one of the victims.The police also registered a case against the
victims family members on a complaint by residents of the locality. Khan,
during his visit to the area, met the victims and locals, and also spoke to the
police officer concerned. A video of the incident had surfaced leading to the
reaction from different quarters.Delhi police commissioner, however, had told
the home secretary that the incident was a local issue involving feeding of
dogs and was not related to origin of the woman.Khan said the RWA members have
been directed to desist from making unfounded allegations against the

UP: Minority institutions not admitting 50%
minority students; govt orders probe
Bareilly: The state Govt has ordered DMs of
all 75 districts to probe minority technical and management institutes for not
enrolling 50% students from the minority community. A large number of these
institutes were alleged to have admitted students from the SC category in place
of minority students. An inquiry into the scholarships awarded to students at
these institutes has also been ordered. Manoj Singh, principal secretary, UP
social welfare dept, said, “We had received a complaint on IGRS portal that
several minority institutions in UP have not followed the set norms and have
instead admitted students from other communities. We have asked the DMs across
UP to conduct a probe into the matter and submit a report to us. Institutions found
guilty will be blacklisted.’’ DMs have been asked to probe scholarships given
to students in 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.TOI

Dalits being trampled upon, says BJP MP Savitri Phule
BJP MP from Behraich Savitri Bai Phule said constitutional
arrangements that were introduced by BR Ambedkar for the upliftment of Dalits
were being trampled upon in recent times. “Provisions for the upliftment of
Dalit in the constitution have not been implemented fully, and has constantly
been tinkered with,” Phule alleged.BJP MP also commented on issues like
caste-based reservations and civil rights for weaker sections of the society.
“The day reservations to Dalits are denied, all the rights of the community
will effectively cease to exist,” she said. Recently, Phule stirred a
controversy after commenting on Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait in AMU. BJP MP
had hailed Jinnah as a mahapurush (great man). “Jinnah was a great personality.
He contributed to freedom struggle. He was, is and shall always remain a great

Centre should enact a law with a provision of
life imprisonment to check cow slaughter,VHP leader Sadhvi Saraswati said at
Jamshedpur.The sadhvi, president of Sanatan Dharma Prachar Seva Samity, said
though some states have enacted legislations to prevent cow slaughter, a law
should be framed and implemented properly at the national level. VHP leader
said she will carry on with her activities despite being booked under the

Documentary on Mecca Masjid blast to be
released
Hyderabad: In view of the recent acquittals of
all the accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case, a documentary film being
produced jointly by SIO (Students Islamic Organisation) with Couch Potato
Productions will be released soon. It will be exploring as to who were behind
the blast, as neither the HuJI militants nor Abhinav Bharat was found to be
involved by the probing authorities. According to film makers, ‘Here Lies the
Tort Law’ the expository documentary will be clearing the shadows shrouded upon
the case. It will be released soon to the public seeking the ground-breaking
facts and answers to dramatic twists in the case. “The documentary will be also
representing the relevant bomb blast cases since 2004 with the subjects
covering lawyers, journalists, social activists, police officers, politicians
and victims of the case,” said Abdul Mannan one of the directors. The Bhaskar
Rao Commission report is yet to be made public which probed the police firing

Aligarh: Youth converts to Islam for love,
arrested
Aligarh: A 21-year-old Aligarh youth who
converted to Islam was arrested on Sunday after his family members and some
right-wing organisations created a ruckus outside the Kwarsi police station in
the district. He has been arrested under section 151 of the CrPC (arrest to
prevent the commission of cognizable offences). A complaint filed by his family
members has alleged that “their son was influenced by a Muslim girl and forced
to convert” even though the youth said that he has embraced the religion of his
own free will.According to police, Ved Prakash, who has now taken the name of
Aadil, had left Hinduism around 8 months ago while he was employed at a furniture
shop in the district’s Nagla Patwari locality. The matter came to light on
Saturday evening when he had allegedly expressed his desire to marry a Muslim
girl who lives in the same neighbourhood. Aadil is a resident of Baraula
Jafrabad area of the district. On Sunday, members of his family along with some
right-wing groups lodged a complaint against the girl’s relatives alleging them
of “forceful religious conversion”. Rejecting allegations of his family, Aadil
said, “No one forced me to convert. I have embraced Islam and have no regrets
about it. What is wrong in that?”SSP, Aligarh, Ajay Kumar Sahni said, “The
youth has admitted to conversion without any pressure. Following the religion’s
tenets, he even underwent circumcision.”Meanwhile, police have arrested another
person named Khurram, one of Aadil’s acquaintances, on charges of forceful
conversion. In his statement to officers, Khurram said, “I have known Aadil for
only a fortnight. We had offered namaz together a couple of times in the

sugarcane arrears pile up

(Sugarcane has displaced Jinnah),” says Jitender Hooda as he interprets the
upcoming bypoll to the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency.For this 48-bigha (8.1
acres) farmer from Kheri Bairagi village of Shamli district and tehsil, the
main issue in the election scheduled on May 28 — necessitated by the death of
BJP MP Hukum Singh — is sugarcane. Kairana constituency has six sugar mills:
four private (the Shamli factory of Sir Shadi Lal Enterprises, Rana Sugars’
factory in Unn, Bajaj Hindusthan’s in Thana Bhawan and Uttam Sugar’s in
Shermau) and two cooperative (in Sarsawa and Nanauta).In current 2017-18 season
(Oct-Sept.), 6 mills have, as on May 18, bought sugarcane worth Rs 1,778.49
crore at the UP government’s State Advised Price (SAP) of Rs 315-325 per
quintal. Of this, they were to pay Rs 1,695.25 crore within 14 days of
purchase, but have so far disbursed just Rs 888.03 crore. That translates into
Rs 807.22 crore in arrears – for a single constituency.“How does it matter
whether or not AMU has a photo of Pakistan’s founder? Our only concern today is
cane payment,” says Hooda, who supplies to the Shamli factory, which alone has
cane dues of Rs 190.33 crore. The other 5 mills, too, have sizable arrears: Unn
(Rs 182.84 crore), Thana Bhawan (Rs 182.80 crore), Nanauta (Rs 115.66 crore),

of Peace”, which has been co-authored by Durrani and ex R&AW chief AS
Dulat, along with journalist Aditya Sinha. The book is set to be launched in
Delhi this week, but Durrani will not be able to attend the event as he has not

garbage picking vans for Muslim dominated areas and also asked the corporation
to prioritise pothole filling in these regions as the community has started
celebrating the month of Ramzan from Friday. The corporators in the
Muslim-dominated wards claim people come in huge numbers for celebration and
festivities during the period and hence those wards and areas need more
attention. Udaykumar Shiroorkar, Assistant Commissioner of B ward, where falls

the corporation held meetings with all the stakeholders and have directed them

Kozhikode: 11 die of suspected Nipah virus
infection, medical officials say no need to panic
Kochi:Barely 12 hours after the deaths of 3
members of a family near Perambra in Kozhikode district of Kerala were
confirmed as a result of Nipah virus infection, eight more people died after
showing similar symptoms in Kozhikode and Malappuram, sparking panic among
locals in the region. “We got the report from National Institute of Virology,
Pune, on Sunday, confirming Nipah virus infection in the blood samples of the
three persons who had died initially. Now, four more persons who were allegedly
in contact with the deceased have died at the Medical College,” Kozhikode
district medical officer Jayasree V confirmed.One of persons who died late
Sunday was identified as a nurse named Lini who worked at the taluk hospital,

Members of North East Women's Front, a
pressure group based in North East India, have launched a protest in Delhi
against Centre's move to pass Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which will make
illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians
from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship in
India.The protest is seen as an extension to the ongoing movement across the
Brahmaputra valley of Assam and other parts of North East India against the
proposed amendment.A vast majority of tribal bodies and ethnic groups across
Assam have registered their opposition against the bill in the hearing of Joint

A private Tunisian TV channel has gone ahead
with broadcast of a controversial hidden camera exposé programme. “Shalom”
tackles the issue of normalisation with the Israeli occupation, Quds Press has
reported.Tunisna Channel explained that the programme shows a scenario whereby
a politician or public figure is supposedly invited for an interview with CNN.
It turns out, though, that “interviewer” is actually an Israeli official
offering the guest the opportunity to deal with Israel in exchange for
financial and political support. According to producer Walid Zribi, “guests”
have been putting pressure on Tunisna not to broadcast “Shalom”. Media expert
explained that the programme “aims to expose Tunisian political figures who are
willing to deal with Israel.”The channel denied allegations that it was under
pressure not to broadcast the programme and pointed out that the broadcast
