Kochi: A leading Islamic body on Saturday
jumped into the ongoing controversy over the demands for removing a portrait of
Muhammad Ali Jinnah from the AMU. Joining the issue, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind today
questioned the rationale behind the demands to remove the portrait of Pakistan
founder from the AMU history."What is the rationale behind such a demand
after it has been there in public view for the past 80 years? Even if someone
has such a demand, they can move courts for the same...Why such a row over
it?" its head Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari asked.Umari said that it was a
small issue that has been blown out of proportion. Siding with the AMU
students, Umari said that it has long been the practice in AMU to display
portraits of its lifetime members of the students' union in the

no one had raised any objections or put forward any demand for its removal,''

prominent Muslim clerics on Saturday came out in open against the presence of
Jinnah’s portrait on AMU campus and sought its immediate removal. Member of AIMPLB,
Maulana Khalid Rashid Phirangi Mahli condemned Jinnah and claimed that the
Muslims of India had nothing to do with him. “Jinnah’s portrait should be
removed from the walls of AMUSU hall,” he said while talking to media persons
in Kanpur on Saturday.He, however, chose to disagree with the manner the
protest against the portrait was spearheaded. He claimed that those who wanted
its removal should have taken the proper channel and approached V-C.Another

and so there is nothing wrong in it, but it can be removed if the public
sentiments are against it,” the minister of state for social justice said here.On

of AMU's founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan has come to the fore.A portrait of Sir
Syed that donned the wall of the state PWD guest house in Khair town along with
pictures of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Ambedkar and Lal Bahadur Shastri was found
removed. Neither any official nor the security guard of the guest house have
any knowledge about who removed the portrait of Sir Syed.The portrait
reportedly went missing on Wednesday when the security guard went home to have
food. Reportedly, in a recent meeting of local BJP leaders in Aligarh,
questions were raised on the portraits of Sir Syed in various state-owned

Gandhi, and called the whole issue “unnecessary”.Slamming BJP over playing
politics over the issue, Nishad said, “BJP is playing a dirty game over
Jinnah’s name, which is highly condemnable. Nehru and Gandhi contributed to the

Situation peaceful at AMU as student protests

Situation at AMU remained peaceful today, days
after protests rocked the campus over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah which
hangs at the student union office.The indefinite dharna and boycott of academic
activities by students, however, continued for the third day today. Police on
Wednesday resorted to lathicharge, lobbed teargas shells to disperse AMU
students demanding the arrest of protesters who had barged into the campus,
agitating over the portrait of the Pakistan founder. Meanwhile, the president
of Delhi's JNU Students' Union, Geeta Kumari, today asked RSS and different
saffron groups to "stop interfering in the internal affairs" of
different educational institutions in the country.Addressing the protesting AMU
students at their dharna site, Geeta Kumari said, "AMU and all other
universities are autonomous institutions and we will not accept attacks by such
organisations in the affairs of different educational institutions." Among
other prominent visitors to the dharna site was parliamentarian Pappu Yadav. He

students on Wednesday will be taken up by opposition parties because what took

Aligarh: Expressing concern over the breach in
the security of former Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari, AMUSU alleged
that the members of Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) had barged into AMU campus on
Wednesday with “deliberate intention to attack” him. Demanding a judicial probe
into the incident, AMUSU has warned BJP and its parent organisation RSS, to not
drag AMU into any controversy just for political mileage in the 2019 general polls.

convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years, Jamaat-e-Islami has
demanded death penalty for every rapist irrespective of victim age.Secretary General
of JIH, Muhammad Salim Engineer said:“Jamaat supports the Ordinance as it
allows the setting up of new fast-track courts and installation of special
forensic kits in all police stations and hospitals to expedite investigation in
rape cases. Jamaat feels that capital punishment is necessary to deliver
justice to the victim and also act as a deterrent for such heinous crimes. It
has been demanding death penalty for every rapist irrespective of the age of

JK:5 militants including professor killed in
gunfight
Srinagar: 5 militants including an assistant
professor of Kashmir University were killed in a gunfight with security forces
early Sunday in Shopian district while a civilian succumbed to a bullet injury
in clashes with the forces.Mohammad Rafi, who taught sociology at the
university and went missing on Friday was among the dead. Rafi was a resident
of central district of Ganderbal. He was missing on Friday after he informed
his family that he would be visiting home but didn’t turn up. Police suspect he
might have joined militants.Early Sunday morning, security forces cordoned
Badigam, a village in Shopian, after inputs about presence of militants. Police
said that the hiding militants opened fire triggering an encounter.“Rafi called
his family at around 5 in the morning and told them he is with militants. The
family told us at 6 and we got his parents to ask him to surrender. Till then
he had switched off his phone. We made multiple efforts for his surrender but
it went in vain. It appears others did not allow him to come out,” said

Ever since the first incident of open Namaz
disruption happened in Gurugram last week, there has been a growing concern
among those from the Muslim community about more such incidents, especially
after the Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, a collective of Hindutva outfits
openly threatened to disrupt Friday prayers.On Friday, they actually stopped
people from offering 'open' namaz at several parts of the city. Hindutva
outfits went around the city shouting slogans like 'Jai Shri Ram' and
'Bangladeshi wapas jao'.Such scenes were reported from at least ten locations
on Friday, where people offering namaz had to get up midway and run from the

Gurugram, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said such congregations
should be restricted to mosques or Idgahs rather than public areas.“In our
point of view, namaz should be offered at their designated places. Namaz should
be offered at mosque and Eidgah. If there is shortage of place for namaz, then
it should be offered at personal place. These are not such issues which should
be displayed at public places,” Khattar said while speaking to journalists in

acknowledged that it was the state’s duty to maintain law and order while
saying there had been an increase in instances of namaz being offered in the

MP: Tribal woman, Muslim man’s nikah cancelled
after VHP protest
Bhopal:Mandla district administration has
cancelled the nikah between a tribal woman and a Muslim man at a Govt mass marriage event after VHP raised objection
to it, alleging that it amounted to illegal conversion. Saraswati Shivram, 22,
and Saddam Sikandar Hussain, 23, both from Mandla, were among 1,001 couples who
got married on April 26 at Mandla. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana and
Mukhymantri Nikah, marriages and nikahs are performed at the same venue.VHP
leader Awadhesh Singh said the revocation was an admission that the
administration had goofed up. He said the nikah was illegal because the bride
had not converted to Islam. Singh said that VHP did not highlight case of a
Hindu boy marrying a Muslim girl under the Kanyadan Yojana. Chief Municipal
Officer of Mandla Nagar Palika said the couple had registered under the
Kanyadan Yojana but chose to go for a nikah ceremony at the last moment. He
said he was not present during the ceremony and it would have been difficult

JK:Restrictions imposed amid protest call by separatists
Srinagar:Authorities on Sunday imposed
restrictions in parts of Srinagar as a precautionary measure to maintain law
and order in view of a strike called by separatists over the killing of
militants during an encounter and the death of a civilian in a clash
here.Restrictions under Section 144 of CrPc have been imposed in seven police
station areas of the city here, a police official said. He said strict curbs
have been imposed in the police station areas of Nowhatta, Rainawari,Safakadal,
MR Gunj and Khanyar, while partial restrictions were in force in the Maisuma
and Kralkhud areas.Curbs were put in place as a precautionary measure to
maintain law and order, official said.
Bangladesh advocates OIC reforms for India's

New Delhi: Bangladesh on Saturday advocated
reforms of Organisation of Islamic Conference or OIC inferring entry of
countries with large Muslim populations like India as observers in the
grouping. "A number of countries –
not OIC members, have large number of Muslims as their citizens. The Muslims
may be minority in those countries, but in terms of number – they often exceed
the total population of many OIC member countries," Bangladesh Foreign
Minister AH Mahmud Ali said in Dhaka on Saturday at the inaugural of OIC Foreign
Ministers meet. "There is a need to build bridges with those non-OIC
countries, so that a large number of Muslim populations do not remain untouched
by the good work of OIC. That is why, reforms and re-structuring is critical
for OIC," Ali said indicating entry of India as OIC observer. Islam is
second largest religion in India and based on that Delhi has been advocating

New Delhi: A Delhi Govt inquiry has confirmed
the illegal conversion of a Tughlaq-era tomb into a temple in the heart of the
city in mid-March this year. The report submitted to Deputy CM Manish Sisodia
Saturday evening said that a fresh complaint was lodged to hand it back to Govt
for restoration. The first complaint to remove the encroachments was filed with
the Police on 14th March.“From being the tomb of an unidentified person dating
back to the Tughlaq dynasty (1320-1413) to becoming Shiv Bhola temple two
months ago, Gumti — a small, domed tomb in Safdarjung Enclave’s Humayunpur
village — is facing an identity crisis. The state-notified monument built on a
mound, amid buildings and a park, was painted white and saffron in March, and
idols placed inside it,” said the daily in its report.On Friday itself, Deputy
CM Sisodia ordered an inquiry to be carried out by the Art, Culture and
Language Department of Delhi Govt. He had sought report by Saturday evening.An
official in the know of the development told IANS on Saturday that the inquiry

Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, who has objected to the
redevelopment plan submitted to the Delhi Govt .Bukhari recently wrote to
Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal opposing the proposal that seeks to ‘redevelop’
the Jama Masjid area along with the relocating of the iconic Meena Bazar,citing
“lack of understanding of the religious process”. “Jama Masjid Precinct
Redevelopment Plan, proposed by the private architecture consultant appointed
by PWD offers no solution to the real issues. Rather, it would unnecessarily
displace Meena Bazaar shopkeepers, which would lead to more chaotic situation

Clashes erupt among BHU students, security

Hindu University after a student filed a complaint with the police alleging
that he and his friends were attacked inside the University premises this
morning. Police have started their investigation after the complaint was raised
by the student. It is also reported that the security at BHU campus has been
increased. The student who was attacked by the unknown people recounted the
horror of the incident. “I was going for semester exams with my friends when
around 10 people attacked us near Hindi Dept with hockey sticks,” said the

Dalit homes stood deserted. All the young women had been sent away “as

Meerut Critical Care Hospital. Doctors said that apart from a fractured leg and
other injuries, his kidneys had been damaged in the assault, and his nails had
been pulled out. The other victim, his 16-year-old nephew Manish, bears
injuries all over his body.Dalit villagers alleged that the attacks followed an
order by the pradhan, Pramod Rana, at a panchayat in Gujjar-dominated village.
Of the village population of 5,100, Dalits number around a hundred. Both the
pradhan and the police deny the allegation. Police also claimed that the
situation was calm after the arrest of 7 accused in the case, including
Rajveer, Rajpal, Rameshwar, Pappu, Birendra and Raj Singh. The police believe
the attacks stemmed from an affair between an 18-year-old Gujjar woman and a
20-year-old Dalit man of the village. Villagers say that on April 15, woman’s
parents married her off to a member of the community to break their
relationship. But on April 27, the woman got together with Dalit youth and

Pradesh’s Ujjain district withdrew an order on Saturday that had asked
functionaries of village panchayats to intimate the police about any weddings
in Dalit families three days in advance.The order, issued on April 16 in
Mahidpur town, 244km from Bhopal, came two days after a wedding procession of a
Dalit groom was allegedly stopped by upper-caste men. The man belonged to
Scheduled Caste Balai community, said an official.In the order, the SDM of
Mahidpur, Jagdish Gome, had directed the secretaries of all village panchayats
within his jurisdiction to inform the police three days in advance about any
weddings being organised by families belonging to the SCs, STs and Other

Maharashtra Govt is planning to enact a law to
encourage intercaste and inter- religion marriages and focus on giving
protection to such couples, in the backdrop of instances of honour killing.The
couples - where spouses are from different religions or castes - have to face
various problems, including social boycott and the threat of honour killing,
state social justice minister Rajkumar Badole said."Hence, besides other
aspects, the law will focus on what kind of protection can be given to the

At least 6 people have been killed by an
explosion in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health ministry in Hamas-administered
territory.At least 3 others were wounded by Saturday's blast, the cause of
which remains unclear, the ministry said.The explosion took place in Deir
el-Balah, in central Gaza Strip, Palestinian WAFA reported.Hamas' military wing
has said Israel is responsible for the explosion, which it said took place
during a "complex security and intelligence operation", AFP reported.This
blast follows weeks of protests along the Israeli-Gaza border as part of the

Israel wounded 8000 protesters since 30 March
Israeli occupation soldiers have wounded
around 8,000 unarmed Palestinians taking part in the Great March of Return
activities along the eastern border of the Gaza Strip, local medical sources
have revealed.According to Ministry of Health in Gaza, the Israeli troops had
wounded 6,793 protesters by Thursday, including 24 who have each had one of
their limbs amputated as a direct result of their injuries.On Friday, ministry
spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra announced that a further 1,143 protesters had been
wounded, bringing the total since 30 March to 7,936. With no fatalities
recorded on Friday,total of those killed by the Israelis since the end of March

Israel sources: Trump to ask Israel to
withdraw from 4 East Jerusalem neighbourhoods
While US administration is yet to release
details of what Donald Trump has called the “deal of the century”, Israeli
sources have claimed that the American President will ask Israel to withdraw
from 4 Palestinian neighbourhoods in occupied East Jerusalem.According to the
Jerusalem Post, Trump will demand that Israel make this “painful concession”
and transfer control of the 4 neighbourhoods – Jebl Mukabar, Issawiya, Shuafat
and Abu Dis – to the Palestinians so that the territory could become the
capital of a future Palestinian state. The demand, according to the Post, was
communicated by US officials to Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman
during his visit to Washington last week. The news comes as the US prepares to
move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on 14 May, a decision that has been
universally condemned. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of
Israel threatened to jeopardise the entire peace process. Following the
decision, which was seen as an endorsement of the Israeli narrative, Palestinian

Yemeni Govt sources said on Friday that UAE
has occupied an island in the Red Sea and prevented PM Ahmed Bin Daghr from leaving, Anadolu has
reported. A senior Saudi delegation has apparently arrived on Socotra in an
effort to sort out the crisis between UAE and the internationally-recognised
Yemeni Govt. Yemeni sources say that the UAE occupied the port and airport on
the island just one day after deploying more than 100 troops there. Ben Daghr
was on Socotra along with a Govt delegation in order to prepare for and open a
number of development projects. Saudi delegation arrived after contacts between
