Karnataka Results LIVE: Both BJP and
Congress-backed Kumaraswamy Stake Claim, Ball in Governor's court
BJP's
CM candidate BS Yedyurappa and Congress-backed Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD
Kumaraswamy met Karnataka Governor Valubhai Vala and staked claim to forming
the govt in the state. While Yeddyurappa said BJP should be given the chance to
prove majority first as it is the single largest party, HD Kumaraswamy said the
JDS-Congress combo should be invited first as they have the numbers. The ball
is now in the Governor's court and he can decide which side to invite first.
While the convention has been to invite the single-largest party to form the
government first, in Goa and Meghalaya, the Congress was not invited despite
being the largest party. BJP has won 104 seats out of 222, falling short of the
halfway mark, while the Congress-JDS combo has 118 seats, including the support
of two independents. The Congress has said that if the Governor does not invite
the JDS-Congress combo to form govt, they would move the court. "We are
extending our full support to JDS to form the government in Karnataka. We have
submitted our letter to the governor to stake claims to form the government.
Now, the governor has to decide, we will proceed from there. Rest of the
modalities will be decided later," says state Congress chief G
Parameshwar, with Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy by his side.JDS has won 38 seats
and Congress has 78 seats. Together, they have 116 seats to themselves and the
support of 2 Independents.news18

Muslim women can seek relief under Domestic
Violence Act, rules HC
Mumbai: In a significant ruling, Bombay High
Court held that a Muslim woman can seek reliefs like monthly maintenance,
custody of children and also accommodation under the Protection of Women from
Domestic Violence Act (DV) of 2005. The HC ruled that the fact that Muslim
marriages are governed by their personal laws, but the same do not bar a woman
to seek reliefs under the DV Act.The ruling was delivered by a single-judge
bench of Justice Bharati Dangre, earlier this month, while hearing a
matrimonial dispute of Muslim couple. The bench was seized with the plea filed
by Ali Abbas Daruwala challenging the orders of Family Court, Bandra directing
him to pay Rs 20,000 each to his 2 minor children and Rs 25, 000 to his wife,
every month.According the husband he divorced his wife way back in March 2017
by pronouncing talaq. However, the wife later on refused to accept the said
talaq and approached the Family Court seeking divorce under Dissolution of
Muslim Marriage Act, 1939. Further, she also moved a plea seeking monthly
maintenance and accommodation under DV Act. The said plea was opposed by the
husband, who argued that they are governed by the Muslim personal laws and the
provisions of DV Act cannot be invoked in their matter.Trashing the contentions
of Daruwala, Justice Dangre said, “A bare perusal of the provisions of the DV
Act would reveal that it is an enactment to provide more effective protection
for rights of women guaranteed under the Indian Constitution who are the
victims of the violence. The enactment no way intends to restrict its
application to any particular category of women but it intends to protect the
women aggrieved, who are victims of DV.” freepressjournal

Hadiya re-run? Uttarakhand man wants wife

New Delhi:The Supreme Court has asked the

the court on Wednesday.Danish and Aisha, who both hail from Haldwani, were

Kerala SIMI Camp: Setback for NIA as court gives
7-yrs rigorous imprisonment for 18, but most have served 10-yrs
Kochi:
In what could be seen as a setback for NIA, its special court in Kochi
on Tuesday awarded 7 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to 18 accused and set off
their remand period in the 2007 Wagamon SIMI Camp case at a time when most of
them have completed 10 years in custody. However, since the accused persons are
facing trial in Ahmedabad serial blast case, they won't be set free now.The
Court ordered the accused to face the sentence concurrently and set off the
remand period from the sentenced imprisonment. Hence, apart from Abdul Sathar,
Habeeb Falahi, Manzar Imam and Alam Jeb Afridi all other accused have completed
the sentence as they were in remand period for over 7 years now. However, the
persons who completed the sentence period would not be released as they are
facing trial in serial blast case in Ahmedabad and some are facing life
imprisonment for similar SIMI camp case in Indore.Last day, the court had
acquitted 17 accused persons in the case. Camp case is first in India in which
trial is carried out using multi-point video conferencing system. System connected

Gender bias kills 239,000 girls in India every
year: Study
An estimated 239,000 infant girls younger than
five die in India every year because many parents prefer boys over girls,
according to a study published on Tuesday. Scientists found India has a massive
deficit in the number of women. More than 63 million women are
"statistcally missing" across the country, according to the
government's annual economic survey. One of the common reasons cited for high female
morality in India is sex-selective abortion, but the study found there is a
"postnatal discrimination against girls in India," which means the
problem lies beyond prenatal care and carries on after a girl is born.
"Gender-based discrimination towards girls doesn't simply prevent them
from being born, it may also precipitate the death of those who are born,"
said study co-author Christophe Guilmoto of the Paris Descartes

power to make room for their religious beliefs. High-end apartments coming up

successful -- will have flats facing Mecca, prayer and washrooms as prescribed
by shariah law, installation of clocks showing prayer timings, a layout that
enables azan from nearby mosques to be heard clearly in all apartments,
separate ablution areas and toilet spaces, hand bidet in toilets for ablution
etc, all of which are being apparently implemented for the first time in the
country.“In such spaces, people share the same faith, food habits and attire.

Palestinians mark Nakba with new catastrophe

Palestinians on Tuesday mark 70 years since
the Nakba, or catastrophe, the day on which the state of Israel was established

forces killed at least 60 protesters.

Palestinians in Iraq: 27,000 fled death
The suffering of Palestinian refugees in Iraq
has not stopped since the US invasion in 2003. Their situation is getting worse
day by day, as revealed by the head of the Palestinians in Iraq Association,
Thamer Mishinish, as the sectarian targeting of Palestinians has increased
recently, bringing the number of refugees down to 3,000.Mishinish noted in a
special interview with PIC that only 3,000 Palestinian refugees live in Iraq
now, out of a total of 30,000 in 2003, distributed in the provinces of Baghdad,
Mosul and Kurdistan. Baghdad has 2,000 refugees, while 800 others live in the
city of Mosul, and 200 live in Kurdistan region. The suffering of the remaining
Palestinian refugees in Iraq has doubled, especially after the enactment of a
law that deprives the Palestinians of the privileges they enjoyed for 70 years
and repeals a previous law issued in 2001 that affirmed these privileges.
Palestinian refugees in Iraq became foreign residents without any privileges.
They were denied their right to free education, free treatment and food stamps,
in addition to the removal of employees from Govt departments and institutions.PIC
Families in Xinjiang ‘forced’ to host Chinese
officials for social stability: HRW
Families living in the predominantly Muslim
region of China’s Xinjiang are required to accommodate Chinese officials as
part of Govt’s Strike Hard campaign, HRW reported on Sunday. Authorities said
that the initiative was designed to “safeguard social stability”.During these
visits or “home stays”, families are required to provide officials with
information about their lives and political views, and are even subjected to
political indoctrination. “Muslim families across Xinjiang are now literally
eating and sleeping under the watchful eye of the state in their own homes,”
said Maya Wang, senior China researcher at HRW. “Latest drive adds to a whole
host of pervasive and perverse controls on everyday life in Xinjiang.” Since
2014, nearly 2 lakh cadres from Govt agencies, state-owned enterprises and public
institutions have regularly visited families in the region. Earlier this year,
Xinjiang authorities extended the “home stay” programme wherein cadres would
spend at least five days every two months with the families. Human Rights Watch
reported that there was no evidence to suggest families could refuse to host
the cadres.scroll.in
