Aligarh: Scores of students at AMU were
injured Wednesday afternoon after armed activists from the Hindu Yuva Vahini
descended on the campus with police backing to violently demand that a portrait
of Mohammad Ali Jinnah – which has been hanging inside the students’ union hall
for 80 years – be taken down.After JNU, Hyderabad University and Delhi
University’s Ramjas College, AMU has
thus become the latest university to come under the radar of Hindutva groups
protesting what they claim are “anti-national” activities on campus.Jinnah was
active in the Indian freedom struggle until his Muslim League developed the
‘two nation theory’ that eventually led to the partition of India and the
creation of Pakistan.Hours before the former vice president of India, Hamid
Ansari, was to visit AMU for an event, some 30 activists of Hindu Yuva Vahini,
accompanied by uniformed policemen, came to Bab-e-Syed – the central gate of
AMU. They shouted slogans like ‘We will not let such respect for Jinnah pass in
India”, “If you want to remain in India, you must say Vande Mataram’, “Vande
Mataram, Jai Shri Ram!’The policemen made a pretence of trying to stop the
march some 50 yards from the gate. HYC activists then waved pistols and other
weapons in the air, endangering the lives of students.As students’ union office
bearers and other students came to the gate, a mild altercation ensued and six
of the HYV activists were handed over to the police. The police reportedly did
not file an FIR, and released the accused.Soon, a large gathering of students collected at the gate to protest
what they said was the unwillingness of the police to uphold the law. The
police, in turn, returned with reinforcements, as did the Hindu Yuva Vahini,
and what followed, say students, was a lathi charge on the AMU community with
HYV activists pelting stones as well. The students ran as the police chased
after them inside the campus. More than 65 students were severely injured,
including the president of AMUS, Maskoor Ahmed Usmani, secretary Mohammad
Fahad, and former vice president Mazin Zaidi, who were taken to hospital.The

the portrait has been in the Students’ Union Hall since 1938, when Jinnah was

Amid the ongoing outrage over the presence of
a portrait of Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah inside AMU, reports have
emerged claiming that his picture has gone missing from the student union’s
hall. Reports said that the portrait at the centre of a row went missing on
Wednesday just ahead of a ceremony to bestow lifetime membership of the student
union on ex Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari. The development comes in backdrop
of Hindu Yuva Vahini’s 48-hour ultimatum to the AMU to remove Jinnah’s image.
While AMU student’s body expressed shock over the development, university
authorities said that the portrait was removed from the student union’s hall

At least 109 people have been killed and more
than 130 injured in the deadly dust storm which hit several parts of western
and northern India on Wednesday. While as many as 64 people have died and at
least 38 injured in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, the toll in Rajasthan due
to high-intensity squall and thundershowers has gone up to 27 till now. Nearly
100 have been injured in Rajasthan. As per the latest figures, the death toll
in Uttar Pradesh has reached 64 and 47 injured in the dust storm in different
parts of the state. At least 160 animals
have also died due to the calamity. Other
affected districts include Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad,
Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Mathura, Kanpur, Sitapur, Mirzapur, Sambhal, Banda,

Delhi Minority Commission to certify madrassas
in National Capital
In an attempt to bring standardised education
to the students at madrassas in the national Capital, Delhi Minority Commission
(DMC) is set to certify them. The move will allow them to avail Centre’s several
schemes for minorities, including the Scheme for Providing Quality Education in
Madrassas (SPQEM). SPQEM has been on papers in Delhi ever since the process was
started by the Sheila Dikshit government in 2012.The commission will soon start
the process of inviting madrassas to apply for the certification. It will set
some selection parameters like infrastructure, teacher-student ratio and level
of degree being issued by them.Presently, there are around 3000 odd madrassas
operating in the Capital and majority of them offer religious subjects along
with basic Hindi, Urdu and primary-level Mathematics.In the absence of any
specific board for madrassas, they neither have a standardised syllabus nor can
they avail the benefits from Centre’s SPQEM scheme, for which it is mandatory
to be certified by the state board or the govt.According to Delhi Minority
Commission chairperson, Dr Zafarul Islam Khan, the move will help the madrassas
avail the benefits under SPQEM, including trained teachers for subjects like
Mathematics, Science and Computer. It will also help in strengthening
libraries, establishing computer and science labs, among others.“Handful of
madrassas offer these facilities and subjects to the students in Delhi. But,
they will start getting funds for all these facilities once they will be
certified,” he said.Khan said that the then Sheila Dikshit-led Congress govt
had asked the commission to commence the process in a bid to implement SPQEM in
Delhi in 2012, however, it could not take off due to administrative reasons.
“We are finally starting the process so that over 3 lakh students studying in
these madrassas are not left behind,”he said. “Bringing madrassas under some
organised system will help them flourish as they will start getting funds from
the government instead of being dependent on donations,”said activist Firoz

After protest against namaaz by Hindutva
group, Muslims in Gurgaon grow anxious as Friday draws near
“When did it become an offence to pray in the
open?” asked Hafeez Junaid before he kick-started his motorbike and zoomed off
in the direction of the market in Gurgaon’s DFL Phase 5 on Tuesday. 30-year-old
was in a hurry. His friends were waiting for him and he had an urgent message
for them – this week, Friday prayers were unlikely to be held at the usual spot
in Sector 53.This was because of what had happened on April 20 and after. As
around 500 Muslim men had gathered for namaaz in a field owned by the Haryana
government in Sector 53, several Hindu residents from the neighbouring villages
of Wazirabad and Kanhai disrupted their prayers, shouting “Jai Sri Ram”. A
video of the incident had later surfaced on social media, following which 6
persons were arrested for hurting religious sentiments. They were later
released on bail.Then, on Monday, a Gurgaon-based Hindutva group called the
Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti protested outside the district collector’s
office demanding that the authorities put a stop to prayers organised by
Muslims in open spaces in the vicinity of Hindu-dominated neighbourhoods. The
Samiti is an umbrella body of the local units of 12 Right-wing groups,
according to its members.“We have two problems here,” said Rajeev Mittal,
national coordinator of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Kranti Dal. “First is that
Muslims encroach government lands by this method. And second, Hindu boys had
been arrested for fighting for their religious rights.”Subeh Singh Vohra, a
former sarpanch, participated in Monday’s protest as a representative of the
two villages from where the 6 men were arrested. All of the other protestors
came from elsewhere in Gurgaon. “Boys from the village went to stop the namaaz
in the open ground because they felt something wrong was happening,” said
Vohra, who is in his 60s. “They did nothing wrong. It is the Muslims who are in
the wrong. Why should they pray in an open ground when they have mosques for
that?”But according to Junaid, an Urdu teacher who organises the Friday namaaz
in Sector 53 and at another ground in Gurgaon, the community cannot do without
these open spaces.There are 22 mosques in Gurgaon, the biggest one being a
half-constructed structure in Sector 57 that is now tied up in a legal dispute.
Gurgaon’s Muslims also gather for Friday prayers in an estimated 106 open
spaces, said Junaid.Speaking of the ground in Sector 53, he said, “There are
two mosques in the vicinity – one is around 5 km away and the other around 8 km
away. It becomes difficult for people who do not have vehicles to commute.But

Tension in Hyderabad as miscreants place idol
in Mosque
Mild tension prevailed at the historic Shaikpet
Mosque situated close to the Golconda fort, after unidentified miscreants
allegedly placed an idol of Ram, inside the structure on Tuesday morning.The
incident came to light after a few local youth found the idol and immediately
informed the police. While the police said that they had posted a picket at the
spot to ensure communal harmony, a police official removed the idol placed
inside the masjid.“The religious structure is not being used now. We reached
the spot immediately and took the situation under control. No untoward incident
was reported. We are verifying the miscreants behind the act,” the police was
quoted as saying. According to FIR, the accused have been identified as Beer
Singh, Yogender Singh, Kirpal Singh, Naveen Singh and Maya Bai. The police said
that they “trespassed into the said Wakf institution and put religious idols in
the mosque and tried to start doing a puja with mala fide intention to grab the
property.” "We are putting in our best efforts to take complete control of
the Masjid by raising the compound wall and securing boundaries. I have also
spoken to officials of Wakf Board and urged them to construct a boundary wall.

Govt expands minority development plan to 308
districts from 196
New Delhi: BJP-led central government is
expanding the reach of a scheme to improve socio-economic infrastructure for
minorities in education, health and skill development from 196 to 308 districts
of the country. From 27 states and UTs, the programme, which was last year
allocated Rs 3,972 crore to be spent over three years, will now be implemented
in districts across 32 states and UTs.“Between 33% and 40% of resources under PMJVK
would be specifically allocated for
women-centric projects,” said the ministry of minority affairs, adding, “It is
an attempt to reduce the gap between the national average and minority
communities on backwardness parameters”. Put together, additions represent a
57% increase in the coverage area.The states with the highest number of districts
which will benefit from the PMJVK are UP (43), Maharashtra (27), Karnataka,
Bengal and Rajasthan (16 each), Gujarat, AP, Kerala (13 each), Tamil Nadu (12),

SC questions private companies using Aadhaar,
says it goes beyond mandate of law

questioned the use of Aadhaar by private companies, saying that if the 12-digit
biometric number was meant for disbursing welfare benefits to the
underprivileged, to allow non-state entities to utilize it for offering
services to citizens would be beyond the mandate of the underlying law, the
Aadhaar Act .A constitution bench led by chief justice Dipak Misra made the
remarks during the hearing of petitions challenging the validity of Aadhaar Act
and around 40 government notifications. Other judges on the bench are justices
AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan. The remarks do not
constitute a final opinion of the top court in the case.in sync with the
objective of the law. “The area of concern is section 57 (of the law),” the
judge told Attorney General KK Venugopal, who defended the passage of the
Aadhaar law as a Money Bill in 2016.The top court cited the Aadhaar Act to say
the law is meant for disbursing welfare measures to the underprivileged, and
allowing private entities to utilise it would go way beyond the legal

Kashmir: Teen killed, 4 injured in clashes
near Shopian encounter site
Srinagar:A teenager was killed and at least 4
people were injured in clashes between protesters and government forces near
the scene of a gunbattle at Turkwangam village in south Kashmir’s Shopian
district on Wednesday.Shopian CMO Dr Abdul Rashid Najar said Umar Kumar, a boy
aged between 15 and 16 years, was declared dead on arrival at the district
hospital.“The boy had a bullet wound in his chest. He was already dead when
they brought him to the hospital,” Najar said. Another youngster with eye
injuries was referred to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar, he added. The incident
occurred after security forces cordoned Turkwangam village after receiving
intelligence reports regarding the presence of militants there. The encounter
had barely begun when local residents came out in protest, forcing security
personnel to retaliate.A police spokesperson said Kumar succumbed after

HC pulls up CBI in Unnao case, says unhappy
with probe
Allahabad high court on Wednesday pulled up
CBI for its work in the Unnao rape case, faulting the agency for not recording
the statement of the victim.“We are unhappy with the progress in the case. We
asked for a status report just to see what you are doing. Why do you wait for
our orders to proceed?” the court said.“Do whatever you can by using your
power. The court cannot direct you at every stage of investigation,” the court
told CBI’s lawyer.CBI took over the case from the Uttar Pradesh Police on April
12 after allegations that the state’s BJP government was shielding party
lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused.On Wednesday, the CBI filed a
status report in a sealed cover before the court which fixed May 21 as the next

Communal clash in UP’s Ballia , 9 injured
Ballia:9 persons were injured in a communal
clash in Sikriakala village in Gadwar area here, police said on Wednesday. The
incident took place on Tuesday night when a youth belonging to a particular
community allegedly pushed and misbehaved with a girl of another community at a
marriage ceremony in the village, they said.After this both communities came
face to face and indulged in stone pelting in which 9 persons were injured.
Cross FIRs have been registered by both groups in this connection. 6 persons
have been arrested in this connection, SP Sriparna Ganguly said. Heavy force

Loudspeaker at temple sparks communal tension
in Bijnor
Bijnor:Tension prevailed in Garvpur village of
Bijnor on Wednesday over the installation of a loudspeaker at a local temple.
Officials said the temple didn’t have a loudspeaker earlier and according to
govt directions, “no new tradition” is allowed when it comes to installation of
loudspeakers. Situation turned explosive when a man from the minority community
was assaulted by 6 people late on Tuesday night after he filed a police
complaint in the matter. On Wednesday morning, police registered an FIR against
6 attackers and heavy force was deployed in the village to avoid any untoward
incident. According to officials, the dispute over the loudspeaker started on
Tuesday after some members from minority community, which constitutes nearly
50% of the village population, raised an objection about the noise coming from
the temple. They told police that the shrine didn’t have a loudspeaker earlier
and that this was a “new tradition” and they would not allow it.Police arrived
at the spot and removed the loudspeaker from the top of the temple on the same
day. Soon after this development, several right wing outfits jumped into the
fray and the mandal coordinator of Hindu Yuva Vahini, MP Singh, reached the
village along with his supporters.On being asked about the matter, circle
officer Mahesh Kumar said, “It is also a case of a land dispute between the two

After Koregaon violence, residents of Dalit
basti allege they are being forced to leave village, removed from their jobs
Sada Kamble (name changed) and his wife
Savita, who stay in the second house from right after one enters the Dalit
hamlet in Bhima Koregoan, are jobless and forced to sit at home. Earlier, they
worked in the small factories lined along the Pune-Ahmednagar road which
connects to Bhima Koregaon. However, on 10 Jan., a few days after the
Bhima-Koregaon riots broke out in which Dalits were targeted by upper castes,
their contractor told Sada that he needs to shift to Chakan to another branch
of the same factory. While Savita was told that the position she was working in
was no longer available.They had no luck at other factories in the area as well
and now Sada works occasionally as a labourer at construction sites even though
he is no longer fit to do such arduous work.Kiran Gadre, a 20-year-old who has
studied only till Class 8, would work as a fitter at a private company. But he
met the same fate. Post-January, his contractor told him that his job was no
longer available. Later. he visited many factories in the area but to no avail.
And just like Sada, he now spends his days hanging around the basti (hamlet) or
helping his mother.A local senior citizen, on the condition of anonymity, said,
“Seven to eight men who had been working for many years as helpers, fitters or
assisting with packaging at nearby factories have suddenly lost their jobs. He
further said, “Contractors most of whom are from upper castes hire these youth.
Thus, Dalits work for contractors and not for factories. After the riots,
suddenly contractors started giving these young people from the basti different
reasons for taking away their jobs. Those with families were asked to relocate
to other branches of respective factories at Chakan or Rajangoan which are
about 100 to 200 kilometres away. But since they cannot shift their houses and

Guwahati:Residents of Assam’s Goalpara town on
Wednesday found black flags inscribe with the words “IS NE” on a tree on the
Brahmaputra river resulting in fear and panic that it was of the Islamic State
terror group.“I come to this area regularly for walks. I spotted three black
flags flown atop a tree with ‘IS NE’ inscribed on it. I called up the police
immediately,” said a resident. The police however, said the flags do not
resemble those of the terror group.“The flags do not resemble those of the IS.
What we seized are black flags. The words were hand painted. There are also
some Urdu or Arabic words inscribed on it,” Goalpara SP Amitabh Sinha told

Srinagar: A stabbing to death of a student
from minority community in Jammu's Kathua district, which was caught on CCTV,
has further flared up the tension in the district that is already reeling under
the rape and murder of a minor Bakerwal girl.SSP Kathua Sridar Patil told News
18 that the youth killed was not the actual target, but he happened to be a
wrong person at a wrong time. "We have arrested the suspects within hours
of the crime and seized the vehicle in which they had come to carry out the
attack,” Patil said. 3 people have been arrested in the case.Patil said prima
facie it appears the assailants were looking for someone else but ended up
stabbing Liyaqat over some love affair but clarified it certainly was not “love

Bikaner: Hindu Woman's Family Kill Muslim Man
Ahead of Her 'Arranged' Marriage
Jaipur: Two weeks ahead of a Hindu woman’s
arranged marriage, her family members on Tuesday night allegedly assaulted her
Muslim friend, who had come to meet her at her relative’s place in Rampura
Basti in Rajasthan’s Bikaner. The police took 22-year-old Saif Ali Khan to the
hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later, early on
Wednesday morning.According to locals, the woman’s male cousin began hitting
Khan when he saw him entering their locality. “She was staying with her
relatives in Rampura Basti where her friend came to meet her. The family
objected to Ali’s presence in their locality and her cousin Bunty started
beating him in front of everyone in the basti. As the crowd gathered, they put
him in a car and took him to a deserted area,” said Mohammad Yunus, a resident
of Rampura Basti.Khan, who worked as a fruit vendor near Bhutto ka Bass, is
said to have known the woman from before, and the woman’s family, after getting
her marriage fixed within their own community, sent her off to their relative’s
place to stop her from meeting Khan.“She lives in Ranisar Bagh, about two km
away from Rampura Basti. Ahead of her wedding this month, she was sent to stay
with her uncle so that the boy couldn’t meet her, but when he reached there,
her relatives thrashed him badly because of which he died,” Hanuman Ram,
another resident of the Rampura Basti, told The Wire.The police was informed
about the incident by the local people immediately, but when they found Khan,

Khatun, a ninth standard student, doesn’t want to go home during holidays and
summer breaks. Ramena lost her three siblings and mother in a gory incident on
May 2, 2014 near her village in Khagrabari. In one of the deadliest mass
killings in the recent past in this part of the country, 42 villagers were
gunned down by armed militants belonging to National Democratic Front of
Bodoland (NDFB).As the incident completes the fourth year, the victims are
still crying for justice. “We seem to be the most unfortunate citizens in the
country. My wife and children were killed for no reason. My neighbours were
killed, but there’s no justice,” Ramzan Ali, Ramena’s father, told this writer

the world in 2017: Report
India spent $63.9 billion (more than Rs 4.2
lakh crore) on its military in 2017, 5.5% over its expenditure in 2016,
Stockholm International Peace Research organisation said in a report released
on Wednesday. India now stands fifth on the world’s biggest military spenders
list, behind the US , China, Saudi Arabia and Russia.Global military spending
rose to $1.73 trillion (more than Rs 115 lakh crore) in 2017, an increase of

Pakistan raises Kashmir issue at UN Committee

Pakistan has raked up issue of alleged human
rights violation in Kashmir at UN’s Committee on Information to which India
raised strong objection, saying it was irrelevant to the work of the panel.
Pakistan’s delegate Masood Anwar, addressing a session of Committee on
Information yesterday, raised the issue of Kashmir alleging that human rights

has printed pictures of Ram and Sita on a wedding card.Mohammad Salim, a
resident of Baghsarai village, got the cards for his daughter’s wedding,
printed in the form of a scroll with picture of Ram and Sita printed on them.
The card also has pictures of a kalash,
diya, banana leaves and even a pooja thali filled with coconut, flowers and
fruits.According to Salim, he has friends in equal numbers in the Hindu as well
as the Muslim community.“I wish to bridge the gap between the religious beliefs
of Hindus and Muslims. It is a goodwill gesture for my Hindu brothers who also
respect our religion with their heart. If we respect their gods, they will

Guatemala embassy in Israel opens in Jerusalem
Guatemala opened its new embassy to Israel in
occupied Jerusalem on Monday ahead of its official inauguration later this
month, Haaretz reported .The embassy was moved to the Israeli Malha Technology
Park and the Guatemalan flag was raised there. The official opening ceremony
will take place two days after the US embassy is inaugurated in the city on 14

Strip have reported Israeli forces’ use of a devastating “butterfly bullet”,
according to a report by Al Jazeera.Twenty-four Palestinians “have had their
limbs amputated since the March of Great Return mass protests started on March
30”, according to Al Jazeera.All 24 amputees were shot by Israeli snipers with
a “single explosive bullet”, including journalists Yaser Murtaja and Ahmad Abu
Hussein, both “shot in the abdomen”.“All of their internal organs were totally

CAIRO: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
said that the ousted president Mohamed Morsi had offered the Palestinians a
piece of the Sinai Peninsula during his rule. Abbas’ statements came during a
speech he delivered at the National council’s 23rd session held on Monday at
the presidential headquarters in Ramallah. “When the Brotherhood ruled during
Morsi’s tenure, we were offered a part of Sinai but we turned down the offer,”
Abbas said. Seemingly, this is not the first time Abbas mentions Morsi’s Sinai
offer. He had revealed details of this proposal four years ago in a press
conference held in Egypt.Plans to resettle Palestinians in Egypt had also been
reported in 2017 by UK based media outlet, BBC which alleged that Egypt’s
former President Hosni Mubarak allowed the resettlement of Palestinians in
Egypt in response to US request in the 1980s. It was stated in these documents
that Mubarak said he would accept the American request only if it came within a
proper framework to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. This information was
revealed by the former Egyptian president during a meeting with the
then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1983. Moreover in 2014, Israel
media outlets claimed that Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi proposed
during his meeting with his Palestinian counterpart to give a piece of the
Sinai Peninsula to establish a Palestinian state; Both Palestinian and Egyptian
officials denied these claims. Israel Army Radio reported that Sisi had offered
for Abbas, during their meeting Sunday, to establish a Palestinian state on
Gaza territories with a 1600 km sq tract of land from neighboring Sinai, which
would increase the land of Gaza to fivefold of its current size. In return, the
radio reported Abbas would give up the demand of establishing a state with the
1967 borders. Abbas paid a three-day visit to Cairo to meet Sisi and attend the
142nd session of the Arab League Foreign Ministerial meeting, and they

Ankara: The Statistical, Economic and Social
Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), based in the
Turkish capital Ankara, has revealed that 61.5 percent of the world’s displaced
people, whose number is estimated at more than 25 million, are from the member
states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).In addition to the
displaced persons, SESRIC report has found that 67 percent of the world's
refugees settle in the OIC member states, as well as 71 percent of the people
around the world who need necessary assistance (89 million persons) also live
in the OIC countries.OIC General Secretariat said Tuesday, in a statement, that
it will hold a brainstorming session on the humanitarian dimension and relief
operations of the member states in the Islamic world, especially those related
to the addressing of the protracted Rohingya crisis. The brainstorming session
will be held on the sidelines of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers,

the government itself pointed out the quorum of the Wednesday session of Punjab
Assembly. The bill with the title of Punjab Compulsory Teaching of the holy Quran
Bill 2017 was moved by an opposition member from Jamaat Islami Pakistan Dr
Wasim Akhtar in the House last year that was later referred to the Standing
Committee on Education of Punjab Assembly for further considerations.The
standing committee has recommended the bill after long discussions and on
Wednesday as a Private Members’ Day, it was set on the agenda of the Day after
completion of an hour long Question Hour session and before taking up Resolution
