Modi govt has failed to provide
corruption-free governance: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind
New Delhi: Prominent Muslim organisation
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind on Saturday attacked the Narendra Modi government for the
recent banking scams in the country. The Jamaat sought a joint parliamentary
committee to probe the recent banking frauds and said “the government has
failed to deliver on its promise of providing corruption free
governance”.Secretary-General of JIH, Muhammad Salim Engineer said, “The
country has lost thousands of crores in the PNB scam. The prime accused fled
the country and the government is trying to escape its responsibility by shifting
the blame to the Central Bank and the bank auditors. Jamaat demands that a
Joint Parliamentary Committee, JPC be appointed to find out how a fraud of such
magnitude and scale took place and what steps the government took to ensure its
prevention.”Hitting out at the government for the PNB fraud case in which
diamantaires Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are the main accused, Salim said that
the resulting loss of the country’s biggest bank fraud will have to be borne by
the tax payers of the country. “Our international credit rating is also going
to take a hit which will impact foreign investment and ultimately our GDP and
growth rate.” Salim said.T he Jamaat also condemned the bombings in Syria and
made an appeal to all stakeholders in Syria to stop the attacks on civilians
and enforce immediate ceasefire there effectively. JIH President Maulana Syed
Jalaluddin Umari said, “We are saddened by the news that over 650 people have
died and thousands more injured...We appeal to the international community,
particularly the United Nations, Russia, Syria, America, the GCC and all
important stakeholders to immediately stop the offensive in Syria and enforce
an immediate ceasefire effectively.”newindianexpress

genocide in Syria

had made a bid to immolate himself by dousing kerosene. However, other members

Northeast polls: PM Modi halts victory speech
midway for Azaan, dedicates BJP win to ‘martyred’ cadres
New Delhi:While addressing party workers at
the newly built BJP headquarters in New Delhi following the triumphant
performance in Tripura, PM Narendra Modi on Saturday halted his speech as soon
as the sound of Azaan (Islamic call to prayer) from a nearby mosque floated in.
He resumed his speech once the Azaan got over.BJP consolidated its position in
the country’s northeast after a landslide election victory in Tripura, ending
25 years of communist rule in the state. The saffron party, in alliance with
NDPP, also made inroads into the Christian-dominated state of
Nagaland.Dedicating the historic victory in Tripura to “martyred” BJP workers,
PM Modi asked cadres assembled there to observe two minutes silence to pay
tribute to them. “So many BJP karyakartas have sacrificed their lives. The Left
party has received a befitting reply for spreading ‘Bhay’ and ‘Bhram’ among
people in Tripura,” Modi said.Earlier in March 2016, PM Modi had taken a
similar pause while addressing a rally on his maiden campaign for the West
Bengal assembly polls. With Tripura and Nagaland in its kitty, the BJP now rules
over 21 of 29 states, while the Congress remains in power only in 4

K Chandrasekhar Rao hints at third front
before 2019 polls
Hyderabad: Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao on
Saturday hinted that he would foray into national politics to bring about
“qualitative changes” in governance. Indicating that a third front — alternate
to the Congress and the BJP — was possible, Rao said he was in talks with other
“like-minded” parties, including the Left parties.“In the last 70 years, the
political system, whether ruled by Congress or BJP, has failed…miserably to
bring a qualitative change in the lives of the people…We are talking of
tackling corruption and ensuring social justice. Every day, there are reports
of Dalits being killed. The BJP is in power in some of the states where they (
Dalits) are getting killed,’’ Rao said.He said only time would decide if the
“change” he was talking about would emerge as a third front or a new political
party. The Telangana Chief Minister was speaking on the sidelines of the

UP bypolls: BSP’s declares support to
Samajwadi Party candidate Nishad
In a big political move, BSP Gorakhpur
in-charge Ghanshyam Chandra Kharwar on Sunday declared support to Samajwadi
Party’s (SP) candidate Praveen Kumar Nishad in upcoming Gorakhpur by-poll to be
held on March 11. Several media reports were doing on the internet that
Mayawati-led party may extend support to former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav-led SP in
the forthcoming bypolls in the state. The bypolls in UP will be conducted in
two Lok Sabha seats — Gorakhpur and Phulpur — which had got vacant by UP CM
Yogi Adityanath and deputy Keshav Maurya.
Many speculations were being made about a possible support by BSP to SM
in order to minimize BJP’s possibility of winning the seat but there was not
any official confirmation. However, clearing the air on the matter, BSP’s
Gorakhpur in-charge Ghanshyam Chandra Kharwar has now extended support to
Samajwadi Party. Though the picture is clear from BSP’s side, there is no
official statement or any reaction from Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on
this big political development. Both BSP and SP had been political opponents in
Uttar Pradesh and has not left any opportunity to defame each other during
election campaigns and public rallies. Therefore, now BSP extending support to
SP will lead to several discussion from the political fraternity. Meanwhile,
further explaining the move, BSP’s Zonal Coordinator in Allahabad, Ashok Gautam
said, “Our workers want to eliminate BJP and that is why the members of BSP
have decided to extend support and vote for SP candidate Nagendra Singh Patel
in Phulpur by-poll.”NewsX

alliance rumours false; party members to vote to defeat BJP: Mayawati on UP
bypolls
BSP supremo Mayawati while breaking his

with any political party. All rumours about BSP and SP alliance in Uttar
Pradesh for 2019 Lok Sabha elections are false and baseless. “We have not
floated any candidate for Lok Sabha Phulpur and Gorakhpur by-polls. Our party
members will exercise their vote to defeat BJP candidate,” Mayawati said.Further
speaking about BSP’s Gorakhpur in-charge declaring support to Samajwadi Party
candidate Praveen Kumar Nishad, Mayawati said, “Ahead of the forthcoming Rajya
Sabha and Vidhan Parishad elections in the state, if SP and BSP transfer votes
to each other to defeat the BJP then it is not an alliance.” Earlier in the

Law panel questionnaire on civil code: BJP yet
to reply
New Delhi: BJP is yet to respond to a law
commission questionnaire on the contentious uniform civil code floated in Oct.
2016, while most of the opposition parties which replied have dubbed the move
to refer the matter to the law panel as a part of the ruling party’s “political
agenda”. Sources in the law panel said BJP is yet to respond to the
questionnaire on the civil code. Though the deadline has ended, the commission
is open to receiving responses as it is still far from finalising its
report.Responding to the questionnaire, parties such as the Congress, the BSP
and the TMC are learnt to have refrained from saying as to whether they support
to a common code or not. They have, however, dubbed the decision of the
government to refer the matter to the law panel as part of its political agenda
to further its political interests, the sources said. BSP, which was the first
party to respond, has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging the agenda
of the RSS is being imposed on the people. Responding to the law panel’s
request to answer the questionnaire, BSP said the party is attaching a press
statement issued by Mayawati on Oct.25, 2016 in Lucknow. Instead of answering
the 16 questions put out by the law panel, BSP said the press statement is its
response to the questionnaire. BSP statement said BJP has been trying to impose
the agenda of the RSS on the people ever since it came to power at the Centre.
Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM is learnt to have opposed a common code and has
supported its stand through certain court orders. NCP is learnt to have opposed
the practice of “instant triple talaq” but has by and large supported separate
personal laws. The sources in the panel said the questionnaire has so far
received over 45,000 responses which continue to pour in even after the expiry
of the deadline. While deadline to send the responses ended on Dec.21, 2016 the
law panel said it would continue to entertain responses received after the
deadline. Indianexpress

police uncover ‘second plot’
Bengaluru: Soon after the killing of
journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh (55) outside her house in west Bengaluru on
September 5 last year, K T Naveen Kumar, an activist of a right wing group
called Hindu Yuva Sena, went incommunicado. When he resurfaced late in 2017
near his hometown Maddur in southern Karnataka, some 80 km from Bengaluru, a
close friend asked him why he had disappeared and not kept in touch. Kumar (37)
told the friend he had gone away because of the Gauri Lankesh murder.Kumar was
arrested on February 18 in Bengaluru for possession of illegal arms — in the
form of prohibited .32 or 7.65 mm bullets — by a Special Investigation Team
probing the Gauri Lankesh murder after vital information emerged in the course
of the illegal arms case. Also the leader of the Maddur unit of the Hindu Yuva
Sena — a rag tag group that occasionally dons the role of culture and moral
police — Kumar has provided a voluntary statement to the police about his
involvement in the murder. Based on the statement and other findings provided
by SIT, a magistrate’s court in Bengaluru remanded Kumar to eight days SIT
custody on Friday.During the time he was underground – specifically after the
SIT released CCTV footage on October 14, 2017 of a man, built like Kumar,
roaming on a motorcycle around Gauri’s home the day she was killed – Kumar
lived in his wife’s house in Birur, Chikamagaluru, 250 km from Bengaluru.Investigations
have revealed Kumar invited a friend and fellow right wing Hindutva activist
from his home town Maddur to join him on one occassion while he was holed up in
Birur. When the friend visited him, Kumar brought out a box of live gun
cartridges that he had stashed away. When the friend asked him why he had the
bullets Kumar told the friend that it was to carry out a big killing along the
lines of the Gauri Lankesh murder, sources said. As many as three of Kumar’s
friends have given statements to the police to indicate that he mentioned his
links to the Gauri case in the aftermath of the killing. indianexpress

Nehru-led Congress, not Jinnah was responsible

In a statement which may once again open the

UN on Syria: Collective punishment of
civilians unacceptable
UN says "collective punishment of
civilians is simply unacceptable" as the Syrian regime forces continue
their brutal military offensive in the rebel-held area of Eastern Ghouta. The UN
said in a statement on Sunday that it was "deeply concerned" for the
safety and protection of millions of civilians across Syria, a week after the
UNSC passed a resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire. The UN's regional
humanitarian coordinator for Syria, Panos Moumtzis, in a statement said
"in some cases, the violence has escalated", referring to Eastern
Ghouta – home to nearly 400,000 people – which has borne the brunt of regime
attacks since February 18."Instead of a much-needed reprieve, we continue
to see more fighting, more death, and more disturbing reports of hunger and
hospitals being bombed," the statement said."This collective
punishment of civilians is simply unacceptable."At least 674 people,
including over 150 children, are now believed to have been killed in the
besieged enclave in the past two weeks.A sixth day of a Russian-led five-hour
"humanitarian pause" has gotten under way in the besieged area, but
residents in the past have mocked the "ceasefire", saying the bombing
has never ceased. The government forces have retaken 10 percent of Eastern
Ghouta, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights late on Saturday. Britain-based monitor said
the regime forces have recaptured four areas in the east and southeast of the
enclave as well as 2 airbases.aljazeera
UN: War crimes likely committed in Syria's
Eastern Ghouta
UN's human rights chief has warned that
attacks on Syria's Eastern Ghouta probably amount to "war crimes" and
that those behind the targeting of civilians will be held to account."I
must emphasise that what we are seeing, in Eastern Ghouta and elsewhere in
Syria, are likely war crimes, and potentially, crimes against humanity,"
Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said at an emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights
Council on Friday."The perpetrators of these crimes must know they are
being identified; that dossiers are being built up with a view to their
prosecution; and that they will be held accountable for what they have
done," he added. Hussein said civilians were being "pounded into
submission or death" in the Syrian government offensive and that aid was
being prevented from entering the area.aljazeera
AIPAC to renew commitment to advance Israeli
agenda
Washington: American Israeli Public Affairs
Committee, or AIPAC, is holding its 2018 policy conference in Washington, DC,
on Sunday, an event meant to underscore its outsized influence inside America's
corridors of power by hosting key Congressional leaders; the US vice president;
US ambassador to the UN; and several foreign leaders. This year's conference
will crown several of AIPAC's accomplishments in advancing its pro-Israel
agenda in Congress and in the White House.Key to AIPAC's congressional agenda
this year will be to support Israeli goals of curbing Iran's rising power and
influence in the Middle East, something Israel sees as a threat to its own
economic and military superiority in the region.AIPAC also seeks to limit US
financial support for the Palestinian Authority (PA) and to target the BDS
movement for its efforts against the Israeli occupation.BDS, which stands for
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, is a Palestinian-led international
initiative that seeks to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories

Palestinian PM urges Hamas to allow govt
empowerment
Jerusalem: Palestinian Prime Minister Rami
Hamdallah urged the Islamic movement Hamas on Saturday to allow the empowerment
of the national unity government in the Gaza Strip as a necessity for attaining
internal reconciliation. Hamdallah said in a statement that President Mahmoud
Abbas and the government were ready to shoulder all necessary responsibilities
toward the Gaza Strip as the government has been enabled to take over powers
there, Xinhua reported. He made the remarks during an event in Anbata, near
Nablus in northern West Bank. Up to 20,000 employees from Hamas have been
enlisted in the 2018 budget, he said, and an approach is underway to resolve
all stalled issues that are hindering smooth handover processes of the
administrative jurisdictions from Hamas to the Palestinian National Authority. The
prime minister called on the Islamic group to enable the government to collect
tax related fees, impose full control on the crossings and allow the domestic
police to enforce public order in the coastal enclave. Meanwhile, Hamas
movement said it had handed over all the governments departments to the
Palestinian government following the agreement reached on Oct. 20, 2017 in Cairo,
Egypt. IANS

Berlin: German authorities registered at least
950 attacks on Muslims and Muslim institutions such as mosques in 2017, the
