SC seeks comprehensive status report on conditions of Rohingya Muslim refugees in India
The Supreme Court on Monday sought a comprehensive status report from Centre on the conditions of Rohingya Muslim refugees in India. Centre was asked to submit the comprehensive status report within two weeks. During today’s hearing, petitioner informed the bench comprising of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud that the conditions in the refugee camps were horrible. Children have died, no toilets are in existence etc., the petitioner said. “Centre and states like Haryana, Rajasthan and J&K  should be asked to provide better hygienic facilities at these camps,” the petitioner urged. The bench listed the matter to April 2.After facing violence in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, Rohingyas escaped to India and settled in UP , Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Jammu, Haryana and Hyderabad. Countering the contentions of ASG Tushar Mehta, the petitioner’s counsel said: “The interest of the human rights is what is being protected. The main issue is that does India stand up to its goal of Vasudev Kutumbakam, does India qualify the protection of human rights?”The Court posted the matter for next hearing to April 9, 2018.indialegallive

Junaid lynching case: SC to re-examine father’s plea for CBI probe, stays trial in Faridabad court
New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to re-examine the appeal for a CBI investigation into the murder of 15-year-old Junaid Khan on board a Mathura-bound train in June last year, two weeks after the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed the plea filed by the victim’s father. The SC also stayed the trial in the Faridabad court and sought a reply from both the Haryana Govt and the investigative agency on the plea filed by the victim’s father Jalaluddin. The court’s decision came after the Punjab and Haryana HC dismissed the appeal against the single-bench judgment that had rejected the father’s plea for a CBI probe in the case. The division bench had dismissed the plea on the question of maintainability and the family was then given two week’s time to approach the SC.CBI had also refused to take over the investigation, last year, on grounds that the case did not fall within the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court for transfer from the state police. CBI said that it was overburdened with cases entrusted to it by various courts and state Govts, besides bank frauds, economic offences and anti-corruption cases. “State Police is well equipped and has the requisite resources at its command to conduct investigation of the case properly under supervision of senior officers.Case has, in fact, been chargesheeted by Haryana Police, with 6 accused having been arrested, out of which two are still in judicial custody,” the reply filed by CBI counsel Sumeet Goel said.6 accused — Naresh Kumar, Ramesh Kumar, Rameshwar Dass, Pardeep Kumar, Chander Parkash and Gaurav Sharma — are facing trial in the case.indianexpress

No-confidence motion against Modi govt not taken up, Lok Sabha adjourned
New Delhi: The no-confidence motion pitched by Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP against the NDA Govt was not taken up as the Lok Sabha was adjourned till Tuesday, leading to an allegation that the House was being disrupted at the Govt ’s “behest”. Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan first adjourned the House till 12pm after protests by TDP, YSR Congress, TRS and AIDMK over demands that AP be given special status and setting up of a Cauvery river management board.“I am duty bound to bring the no-confidence motion... But cannot do that unless the house is in order,” said Mahajan before adjourning the House.“We want a discussion on the issue of no-confidence motion and we appeal to everyone that there should be discussion.” said home minister Rajnath Singh as he appealed MPs to end their protests. The Congress, Left Front, Samajwadi Party, TMC and the MIM have said they will support TDP motion, but Govt is safe because NDA has the support of 315 members in the 543-member house--way above the half-way mark of 272, reports NDTV. SP alleged the AIADMK’s protests were staged.Shiv Sena, an ally of the Govt, said party leader Uddhav Thackeray will decide their stand on the no-trust motion. Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal, which has 20 members in the Lok Sabha and sits in the Opposition, said it has not decided its stand.hindustantimes

Karnataka to recommend separate religion status for Lingayats, Veerashaivas
Bengaluru: In a significant move, Congress Govt in poll-bound Karnataka on Monday decided to recommend to the Centre to grant religious minority tag to the numerically strong Lingayat and Veerashaiva Lingayat community.Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra said it had accepted the recommendations of an expert panel set up by the State Govt  on the issue.“The decision has been taken after deep deliberations and discussion...,”he said.According to expert panel, Lingayats and Veerashaivas are those who believe in the philosophy of Basaveshwara, 12th century social reformer, he said. Jayachandra said the decision would not affect the rights and interests enjoyed by the existing minorities. The demand for a separate religion tag to Lingayat faiths has surfaced from the community, amidst resentment from within over projecting the two communities as the same. While one section led by Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha has demanded separate religion status, asserting that Veerashaiva and Lingayats are the same, other group wanted it only for Lingayats. They believe that Veerashaivas are one among 7 sects of Shaivas, which is part of Hinduism.Of late, some Lingayats have also stated that they were open to having the Veerashaivas under their umbrella, but Lingayat nomenclature was non-negotiable.Karnataka State Minorities Commission had formed a 7-member committee, headed by retired high court Judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, on the issue which submitted its report on March 2.The Lingayat community that owes allegiance to the “social reform movement” initiated by Basaveshwara has a substantial population in Karnataka, especially in the northern parts of State.BJP and several sections of Hindu community have maintained a cautious stance keeping away from the move to give Lingayat separate religion status.PTI

Hindu Mahasabha's calendar refers to Mecca as Macceshwar Mahadev temple, Taj as Tejo Mahalaya
Agra: Hindu Mahasabha, Aligarh, on Sunday released a controversial Hindu New Year calendar in which seven mosques and monuments from Mughal era, including the Taj Mahal, and the holy Muslim site of Mecca, have been referred to as "Hindu temples".While Taj Mahal has been referred to as "Tejo Mahalaya temple", Mecca has been called the "Macceshwar Mahadev temple". Similarly, Madhya Pradesh's Kamal Maula Mosque has been referred to as "bhojshala" and Kashi's Gyanvyapi mosque has been called “Vishwanath temple", Qutab Minar "Vishnu Stambh", Jaunpur's Atala mosque "Atla devi temple" and the demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya as "Ram Janam Bhoomi"."We have organised 'hawan' rituals on the auspicious New year of the Hindu calendar and resolved to make this country a Hindu Rashtra," said Hindu Mahasabha national secretary Pooja Shakun Pandey. She said that she hoped that the govt will accept their demand and declare India a Hindu nation. She said that Muslims had plundered Hindu religious heritage sites and had turned them to mosques by changing their names accordingly."They should now have to give these back to Hindus and we will restore their original names, as mentioned in the new calendar," she added. She said that all names mentioned in the calendar have been verified by historian BP Saxena, a retired professor from the history dept of Varshney College, Aligarh.Saxena claimed that facts can prove beyond doubt that these seven religious heritage sites belong to Hindus. He said that if there is any controversy, excavations should be conducted, just like in the Ram temple case, and evidence will be there for all to see. However, the move has not gone down well with Muslims.Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahli, an executive committee member of AIMPLB, said that these claims are baseless. He said that dubbing the holy site of Mecca a Hindu temple is meant to hurt the sentiments of Muslims and is against the spirit of secularism.TOI

Triple Talaq: Ready to discuss bill in Rajya Sabha, says Minority Minister Naqvi
New Delhi:The Govt  is ready to discuss the triple talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha and was open to suggestions from the opposition — but referring it to a Select Committee made no sense, Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said. The Bill is scheduled to be taken up in the Rajya Sabha in the coming week as part of Govt’s business.“Let’s discuss the bill in the House and the members can move amendments. Nobody can stop a member from moving any amendment,” Naqvi said. “But where is the sense in insisting on refering the bill to a select committee of the House? What will the Select Committee do? Even the House can scrutinise legislation,” he added. The Select Committee may also invite suggestions from stakeholders such as various Muslim organisations and women’s bodies, which Govt has apparently not done. The opposition, Muslim bodies and women’s rights groups have accused the Govt of “unilaterally” drafting the legislation without seeking any opinion from the stakeholders or those who would be directly affected by the proposed law. However, he said: “We have said it earlier too and reiterate that Govt is open to suggestions on the bill from the opposition and others.” But on the question of negotiating the penal provision — which is the main bone of contention —hesaid the bill would make no sense without this as the practice of triple talaq continues even after the SC banned it.IANS

Riyadh: Women in Saudi Arabia need not wear headcover or the black abaya - the loose-fitting, full-length robes symbolic of Islamic piety - as long as their attire is "decent and respectful", the kingdom's reform-minded crown prince said. With the ascent to power of young Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the kingdom has seen an expansion in women's rights including a decision to allow women to attend mixed public sporting events and the right to drive cars from this summer. The changes have been hailed as proof of a new progressive trend towards modernisation in the deeply conservative Muslim kingdom, although the gender-segregated nation continues to be criticized for its continued constraints on women."The laws are very clear and stipulated in the laws of sharia (Islamic law): that women wear decent, respectful clothing, like men," Prince Mohammed said in an interview with CBS television aired late on Sunday."This, however, does not particularly specify a black abaya or a black head cover. The decision is entirely left for women to decide what type of decent and respectful attire she chooses to wear."Reuters
Mohammed bin Salman: Only death can stop me from ruling
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has said that "only death" will stop him from ruling the kingdom in a wide-ranging interview on the eve of his first official visit to the US.  "Only God knows how long one will live, if one would live 50 years or not, but if things go their normal ways, then that's to be expected," bin Salman said in an interview that aired on the US news programme on Sunday. When asked by CBS' Norah O'Donnell if anything could stop him, the crown prince responded "only death". The 60 Minutes report, the first US television interview with bin Salman since he came to power, largely painted MBS - as bin Salman is commonly known - as a leader who has introduced "revolutionary" reforms to his country. aljazeera
