Ranchi:A special fast track court in Ramgarh
district on Wednesday awarded life terms to 11 cow vigilantes, including a
local BJP leader, for lynching a Muslim trader accused of transporting beef in
his vehicle last year. It is yet to take a decision on a twelfth convict, who
is supposedly a juvenile.The court of additional district judge Om Prakash had
held all the accused guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal
Code, among other offences, on March 16. They were accused of murdering Alimuddin
Ansari alias Asgar Ali, a 55-year-old trader.11 convicts were identified as
Santosh Singh, Deepak Mishra, Vicky Saw, Sikandar Ram, Uttam Ram, Vikram
Prasad, Raju Kumar, Rohit Thakur, Chottu Verma, Kapil Thakur and local BJP
leader Nityanand Mahto. They were also slapped with a fine of Rs 2,000 each.Additional
public prosecutor Sushil Kumar Shukla said this was the first case of cow
vigilantism in the country where the accused were convicted and severely
punished. “However, the court is yet to decide on the defence counsel’s
contention that the twelfth convict is a juvenile. We have opposed it on the
grounds that he is over 16 years of age,” he added.Defence lawyer DN Singh said
he will file an appeal petition against the conviction in the Jharkhand high
court. The deceased’s wife, Mariam Khatun, welcomed the judgment. A mob of over
100 people – including Bajrang Dal activists –lynched Ansari at Bazartand in

Centre opposes Jamia Millia Islamia’s minority
status in Delhi High Court
New Delhi: Reversing the previous govt’s
stand, the Centre has filed a revised affidavit in the Delhi High Court this
month opposing order of the National Commission for Minority Educational
Institutions (NCMEI) that declared Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) as a religious
minority institution.On August 29, 2011, the HRD Ministry, under then minister
Kapil Sibal of the UPA-II Govt , had submitted an affidavit in court stating
that the Govt “respects the declaration
made by NCMEI”.The fresh affidavit, filed by the BJP-led Govt on March 5, cites the Supreme Court’s decision
in Azeez Basha Vs Union of India case of 1968 to justify the change in stand.
It states that the first affidavit did not take note of the Azeez Basha case,
in which the apex court said that a university incorporated under an Act of
Parliament cannot claim the status of a minority institution.“In any event, Board
of Jamia Millia Islamia is elected and need not necessarily consist of majority
belonging to Muslim religion. The question of it being a minority institution
therefore does not arise,” states the new affidavit that was taken on record by
the Delhi HC on March 13.“Treating a central university as a minority education
institution is repugnant to law besides undermining its status and is against
the basic tenet of a central university…By no stretch of imagination, Article
30(1) could be read to mean that even if an educational institution has been
established by a Central Act, still the minority has the right to administer
it,” says the affidavit.The affidavit concludes that JMI “is not a minority
institution, having been set up by an Act of Parliament and funded by central Govt
, and also that it was not set up by a minority sect”.According to Section 2
(o) of JMI Act, the University was established by Muslim nationalist leaders in
1920 at Aligarh in response to Mahatma Gandhi’s call to boycott all educational
institutions supported or run by the colonial regime. It eventually shifted to
Delhi and was run by a registered society called Jamia Millia Islamia society.
In 1962, JMI became a deemed university. In 1988, it got the status of central
university through a central law University V-C Professor Talat Ahmad could not

there was a “sense of insecurity” among Dalits and other oppressed classes

sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh Govt on the restrictions reportedly imposed on
media in the counting centre of the Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency
recently. Media was reportedly not allowed inside the centre on March 14, the
day counting of votes took place for the parliamentary constituency.“PCI chairman
Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad has taken note of report of restriction
imposed on media at the counting centre of Gorakhpur parliamentary seat in
Gorakhpur on March 14 by the district magistrate as prima facie, impinging on

India is not considering any proposal to sign
the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT) as a precondition for
joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the Lok Sabha was told
Wednesday.Replying to a written question, minister of state for external
affairs VK Singh also said India’s application for NSG membership remains under
consideration of the group.The Govt continues to engage with the NSG and its
members at appropriate levels for a decision on India’s application, he said.

SRINAGAR: Two Army jawans and two policemen
lost their lives in a fresh exchange of fire between militants and security
forces in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.Another security
personnel wounded in the gunfight is undergoing treatment at a hospital. His
condition is stated to be stable, a police spokesperson said.An encounter broke
out in the Arampora area of the district on March 20 after security forces
launched an operation in the wake of militants opening fire at an Army patrol
party. 4 militants were killed in the operation.The spokesperson said the
anti-militancy operation, which continued overnight, was going on when reports

New Delhi:Home Ministry has conveyed to a
parliamentary panel that Sikh youths are being trained at ISI facilities in
Pakistan to carry out terror activities in India, and members of the community
who are settled in Canada and other places are also being instigated against
the country with false and malicious propaganda. Top officials of the Home
Ministry, led by the Union Home Secretary, told the Committee on Estimates,
headed by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, that radicalisation of youths
by terrorist groups through the misuse of internet and social media has emerged
as a big challenge.According to the report of the Committee — ‘Central armed
police forces and internal security challenges-evaluation and response mechanism’
— which was tabled in Parliament on March 19, there have been some developments
on the Sikh militancy front.The “commanders” of terror groups based in Pakistan
are under pressure from ISI to further the Pakistani spy agency’s terror plans

Communal tension is simmering in Chhatral
village in Kalol taluka in north Gujarat since last four months.The death of a
32-year-old this month has left the village divided. Villagers allege the
incidents are politically motivated. However, police believes them to be
typical crime incidents which are being investigated as such.The tension began
when a 32-year-old was killed and his mothers fingers were chopped.On the other
hand, children go to the local school in a police van under protection to
appear for board exams.On March 5, Farzan Saiyed was attacked when he and his
mother went to milk their buffalo outside their ghetto. Farzan died a few days
later in a hospital in Ahmedabad. His mother, whose fingers were chopped off,
is still recovering.Roshanbiwi Saiyed, the victim whose fingers were chopped
claims her attackers were local boys who she recognizes. "I told the
attackers that we have not done anything, please don't hurt us. One of them
chopped off my thumbs. The rest were beating up my son. We don't know why we
were attacked. We have no enemies," she said.Haroon Saiyed, another
villager who was attacked in February claims local boys of the village were
sloganeering and waving saffron flags when he was attacked."The local VHP
and Bajrang Dal boys have been spreading hatred in the area since December. In
the recent past they have had a meeting where trishuls were distributed. They
take out rallies using anti-Muslim sloganeering. Their social media pages are

UP: Police stop renovation of room ‘used as
mosque’, 14 Muslims held
Lucknow;Tension prevailed at Nehta village in
Sambhal on Monday after police stopped the renovation of a room allegedly being
used as a mosque and a madrasa. Claiming that it was being done without the
permission of the district administration, police arrested 14 Muslims allegedly
involved in the construction. Heavy police force was deployed at Nehta village,
where Hindus form the majority of the population.Chandausi police Circle
Officer (CO) Omkar Yadav said that on Monday, they had received a complaint
from a “member of the Hindu community” that a “mosque” was being renovated in
Nehta without obtaining permission from the district administration. A team of
police and district administration officials rushed to the spot and stopped the
construction. Room is a single-storey structure.Sub-Inspector Ramender Singh,
in-charge of Narauli police outpost, said: “Following renovation of the
structure, tension prevailed in the village. We arrested 14 local residents
belonging to the Muslim community under CrPC Section 151 (preventive arrest).
Those arrested were involved in the construction work. Later, they were
produced in court, which sent them to judicial custody.”When contacted,
Chandausi SDM Om Veer Singh said: “It was a large room belonging to a private
person, which was being initially used as madrasa. Later, some people started
offering prayers at the same place. There was no permission from the Govt to use the space as a mosque, so, we have

protest against the Triple Talaq Bill. The morcha was organised by AIMPLB.
Prof. Monisa Bushra Abida, board member of AIMPLB, while addressing the women
said the Triple Talaq Bill is harassment to women. It is unconstitutional,
which is a conspiracy hatched to end the Muslim community.Nearly 25,000 Muslim
women dressed in burkha (veil) participated in the morcha , carrying placards
saying ' We are safe in 'Sharia law'.The speakers exhorted the audience to rise
against any 'conspiracy to impose uniform civil code'. Banning 'triple talaq'
was termed as the first step towards bringing in an uniform civil code in the
country. It was also dubbed as a means to curb women's freedom . Even threats
were issued that the ruling party may have to bear the consequences of hurting

That was the time, when Islamic law governed the country. After the British
came, the law was limited to governing our personal affairs, through the Sharia
Application Act of 1937. Now, the Govt wants interference in our personal laws in the

MANGALURU: Right-wing activists allegedly
thrashed two youths from minority community after they were found with girls
from majority community, at Karinja, Bantwal taluk, about 30kms from here. The
incident took place on Monday evening, when two Muslim youths, working as auto
rickshaw drivers took five girls, including two Hindu girls, for a stroll at
the Karinja Temple.Police said the girls were attending tuitions every day in
Madanthyar and auto driver Irfan used to ferry them to and fro. However, on
Monday, he went along with girls to the temple premises along with one of his
friends.After reaching temple premises, they were clicking selfies and
activists from right wing noticed it. They later questioned and thrashed them.

Karnataka minority schools free to admit 25
per cent kids from any minority community
Bengaluru: From the academic year 2018-19,
minority educational institutions will be allowed to admit 25% students
belonging to religious as well as linguistic minority communities, and they can
hail from any of these minority communities. The state Govt has recently amended the rules in the
Karnataka Education Act 1983, which has been published in the state
gazette. As per the new amendments
brought in, the education institutions (primary and secondary) established in
the state by minority communities have no need to admit 25% of children
belonging to the same community. Instead, the 25% of students can come from all
religious and linguistic minority communities, said state primary and secondary
education minister Tanveer Sait. He said “Our intention of bringing amendments
to the act for minority institutions is to put the rights provided in the

representation of religious facts and maligning the image of the religion. The
lawyer handling the case Hitesh C Soni, said, “Visual media is very effective
and affects children a lot. So it’s not only about one community but we are
concerned about the perception of the general public. The show is very
provocative in nature and we demand a ban of the same.”The committee that deals
with education and welfare of Muslims in its complaint states that the daily
“shows Islam in a bad light, the scripts of the entire serial is made to
understand that Islam religion needs a lot of changes, revival, amendments.

curriculum of any influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and dismiss employees who
sympathise with the banned group, the education minister said.The Govt will "fight extremist ideologies by
reviewing school curricula and books to ensure they are free of the banned
Muslim Brotherhood's agenda", Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Issa said in a
statement.It also seeks to "ban books attributed to the Muslim Brotherhood
from all schools and universities and remove all those who sympathise with the
group", he added.The statement comes after Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman told CBS TV in an interview that elements of the Muslim Brotherhood,
designated as a "terror group" by the kingdom, had infiltrated Saudi
schools.The prince, who has vowed to return the country to "moderate
Islam", has cut back the political role of hardline clerics in a historic
reordering of the Saudi state.The Islamists were widely employed in the

Israel moves to strip 12 Palestinians of
Jerusalem residency
Under a recently enacted law, Israel's
Interior Minister Aryeh Deri has expressed his intentions to strip the
residency status of 12 Palestinians in Jerusalem, accusing them of being
involved in "terror".The law, passed two weeks ago, gives the
interior minister the power to strip the residency documents of any Palestinian
on grounds of a "breach of loyalty" to Israel.It will also apply in
cases where residency status was obtained on the basis of false information,
and in cases where "an individual committed a criminal act" in the

PA: Hamas must transfer control of Gaza Strip
Palestinian Authority (PA) has called on Hamas
to transfer control of the Gaza Strip to Ramallah saying it was prepared to
assume its full responsibilities there, as tensions between the two factions

Hamas to hand over the Gaza Strip all at once and affirmed its readiness to

HRW urges UN action over Israel’s
‘discriminatory’ system
HRW has urged the UN to take action over
Israel’s expanding illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory
(oPt), part of what the global rights group described as an inherently “discriminatory”
system.As the UNHRC met in Geneva, HRW released a statement on Tuesday, noting
that “in the last six months, settlement expansion has continued unabated, in
violation of Israel’s obligations as an occupying power and to detriment of
Palestinian residents”. Palestinians, the statement added, “live under a
discriminatory, 2-tiered system”.Reaffirming that “settlements are unlawful
under IHL, and transfer of the occupying power’s civilian population to the
occupied territory is a war crime”, HRW noted that “settlements are established
on land unlawfully seized and rendered off limits to Palestinians”. “They stunt
Palestinian economic development and trigger crippling restrictions on the
right to freedom of movement, access to health and education and a host of

drill organised by Greece alongside Israel, the US, Italy, UK and Cyprus,

Boko Haram free abducted Dapchi schoolgirls in
Nigeria
Boko Haram jihadists have released 76 of the
110 schoolgirls who were abducted from the northeastern town of Dapchi in Feb.,
Govt said in a statement on
Wednesday.Information Minister Lai Mohammed said "76 are those who have
been documented", adding that the release of the abducted students
"is ongoing".The schoolgirls were returned to Dapchi by Boko Haram Wednesday
following negotiations between the Nigerian Govt and the militant group.The number of freed
girls may increase "because the girls were not handed over to anyone but

A US privacy watchdog is investigating
Facebook over a potential breach of user confidentiality. The Federal Trade
Commission (FTC), an independent Govt body charged with ensuring companies abide by
their own privacy policies, is looking at whether the social media giant
violated a 2011 consent decree after media reports emerged alleging it had
handed the data of millions of users to a political consultancy.The commission
will be sending Facebook a letter requesting the social-media company provide
answers about the data acquired by Cambridge Analytica, Rob Sherman, Facebook's
deputy chief privacy officer, said."We remain strongly committed to
protecting people's information. We appreciate the opportunity to answer
questions the FTC may have," Sherman said.If Facebook is found to have
violated the terms of the consent decree, the FTC can fine the social network more
than $40,000 a day per violation.The UK's privacy regulator, the Information
Commissioner's office said on Monday it would request a warrant to search the
offices of the political consultancy. Cambridge Analytica stands accused of
using data mined from Facebook in the voter research it conducted for President
Donald Trump during the 2016 elections campaign.A former employee at the
consultancy, Chris Wylie, signalled the breach and told reporters the company
