Maharashtra farmers protest continues on day
6: Nearly 35,000 farmers enter Mumbai; to protest tomorrow outside assembly
After covering about 180 km from Maharashtra’s
Nashik district, anguished 35,000 farmers have finally reached state’s capital
Mumbai. Before reaching their destination, farmers camped at the Thane-Mumbai
border this morning. After the break, farmers will head towards KJ Somaiya
Ground in Sion, a neighbourhood in Mumbai. Police have made all security
arrangements and issued a traffic advisory to avoid jams in the most populous
city in the state. Protesting farmers have planned to encirclement state
Assembly to compress BJP government led by Devendra Fadnavis. Farmers are
unhappy with the attitude of the state government towards the condition of
their community in the state. They are asking for complete loan waiver and
transfer of Adivasi land to farmers who have been tilling it for years. Many
Adivasis have termed this movement as their matter of life and death. Talking
about the matter, Ashok Dhawle, president of AIKS, say they have met
Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan who had assured that he would take farmers
demand to Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of state. Dhawle added that I want
to assure people of Mumbai that they will not face any inconvenience due to
farmers protest. He said, “We started with 25000 and today our strength touched
the 50,000 mark. Even if our numbers get increased it will not disturb the
city. Keeping in mind the board exams of Class 10, we will begin our rally
after 11 km.”The farmers have begun their protest 6 days ago, on Tuesday
evening. We have covered the whole distance by continuously walking, short
breaks and slept under the open sky. The farmers are demanding longstanding
implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report, which says that farmers
should be paid one and a half times the cost of their production and Minimum
Support Prices (MSP).Many parties are now openly supporting the farmer’s
protest to pressurise the state government. Many farmers leaders said that it
should not be considered as a communist protest as it is for the betterment of
the farmers. Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde visited the protesters late night
after party chief Shiv Sena insistence. I have not come here as the
representative of the state government. Sharad Pawar led NCP has also offered
its support to farmers.NewsX

Consensus on Ayodhya difficult, but temple
will be built: RSS
Nagpur: RSS on Sunday said building a
consensus on the Ayodhya dispute was not going to be easy, but stressed that a
Ram Temple - “and nothing else” - would be constructed in the UP town.RSS
general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi also stressed that the matter was sub
judice.“It is certain that the Ram Temple will be constructed at that place
(Ayodhya) and nothing else can be built there, this is also decided,” Joshi
told reporters here on the sidelines of the RSS’s all-important Akhil Bharatiya
Pratinidhi Sabha meeting.Confident of a favourable judgment from the Supreme
Court on the matter, Joshi said the construction of temple would begin after
the court’s order and it would be built on the basis of its verdict on the
ownership of land.Replying to a question on spiritual guru Sri Sri
Ravishankar’s efforts at developing consensus between the different parties on
the issue, Joshi said consensus building was not going to be easy.“We have
always maintained that a temple should be constructed with mutual agreement but
our experience tells us that building a consensus on this issue is not easy,”
Joshi said.Though he said he welcomed Sri Sri’s efforts at negotiations, he
pointed out that there were different groups in society with varied outlooks,
and to build a consensus among them would be difficult.Joshi was also asked
about a demand for a minority religion status for Lingayat community in
Karnataka.“We do not support that,” he said.thehindu
Babri Masjid: I Did Not Say RSS Could Resolve
Dispute, Clarifies Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan
Delhi Minorities Commission Chairman Dr.
Zafarul Islam Khan has said that the media “grossly misrepresented” what he had
said regarding an out-of-court settlement of the Babri Masjid-Ram Mandir
dispute. Some TV channels, papers and news portals had reported that Dr. Khan
counted RSS as the No. 1 authority to bring a lasting solution to the dispute.
However, Dr. Khan, in a clarification, termed the reports as “misleading.”“The
reports grossly misrepresent what I said during my interview on News18. I had
placed RSS at the third position of authorities which could facilitate an
out-of-court settlement of the vexed Babri-Ram Mandir dispute. The first was
the SC and the then Chief Justice of India Justice Khehar himself had offered
to mediate in March 2017. The second authority was the Central government and
the third I mentioned was RSS because it controls all militant Hindu
organisations agitating for the Mandir,” said veteran journalist and author Dr.
Khan. He further said that Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has no enforcing power as
enjoyed by the three mentioned above.“I added that these authorities have enforcing
power while Sri Sri does not have enforcing power and some Hindu organisations
have already started objecting to his dabbling in the issue.”Dr. Khan also said
that though he supported an out-of-court settlement of the dispute, he did not
oppose the ongoing trial of the case in the Supreme Court.caravandaily
After triple, petitions land at SC to end
polygamy
7 months after the Supreme Court quashed triple
talaq, petitions are now landing at the
Supreme Court to end polygamy. Subaida (name changed on request) and Sameena
Begum, 2 Delhi-based women - former, a TV journalist, and the latter, a social
worker - have become the first 'victims' of polygamy to knock on SC door
demanding its ban.Subaida who approached the SC through BJP leader and advocate
Ashwini Upadhyay, said she was distraught after her husband remarried without
legally ending their relationship. Sameena's plight is even worse as she had
endured triple talaq twice in her life.A postgraduate in Mass Communication,
37-year-old Subaida had married on June 5, 2008 and is a mother of two.
"She had a deeply disturbed married life that included repeated dowry
demands, various forms of torture and harassment at the hands of her husband as
well as her in-laws," says the plea.Ultimately, on Jan.26, her husband
married another woman without informing her or taking a legal divorce. She
approached the police and requested that a complaint be lodged against her
husband for bigamy under section 494 of the Indian Penal Code.Under the bigamy
law, a man who remarries without divorcing his first wife can be sentenced to
up to seven years in prison. The guilty is also liable to a fine. However, the
police refused to file a complaint, saying under the Muslim Personal Law, a
husband can have up to 4 wives.Subaida's advocate Upadhyay himself has filed a
petition challenging both polygamy as well as nikah-halala. indiatoday

Triple talaq Bill injustice to Muslim women,
oppose it: Owaisi
Pune:The triple talaq Bill is an “injustice”
to Muslim women and they should stand up against it, MIM leader and Lok Sabha
MP Asaduddin Owaisi said in Pune on Saturday. Owaisi, who was in Pune to attend
the Tahffuje Shariyat Conference, addressed a huge gathering at the Azam Campus
ground. Earlier in the day, hundreds of Muslim women had participated in a
rally against the triple talaq Bill, called by AIMPLB and the Kuljamati Tanzim Sanghatna,
Pune. They held boards with slogans that stated ‘We abide by Shariyat only’, ‘We
reject triple talaq Bill’, ‘Hukumat badal sakti hain, Shariat nahi’ (The govt
may change, but Shariat won’t). The rally started from Jama Masjid on Mahatma
Gandhi Road in Pune Camp area around 5 pm. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha
in December and is pending before the Rajya Sabha.During his speech later in
the evening, Owaisi said it was the “beauty of India” that people from
different faiths lived here together and the Constitution allowed everyone to
follow their faiths. While the BJP-led government at the Centre “claimed to
care about the rights of Muslim women, it had come up with the triple talaq
Bill, which is an injustice against Muslim women,” he said.indianexpress

recorded a turnout of 43 percent and Phulpur 37.39 percent," it
added. There were complaints of EVM malfunctioning at a few booths, but the
machines were promptly replaced without affecting the polling, an election

high-stakes polls in the country's electorally most significant state was said
to be a lack of enthusiasm among voters who are now looking forward to the

Hadiya case: BJP leader V Muraleedharan wants
probe into terror links
Thiruvananthapuram: BJP national executive
member V Muraleedharan has called for a comprehensive probe into the alleged
terror links of Hadiya’s husband Shefin Jahan. With Hadiya’s statement that it
was only PFI that supported them when they faced a crisis following their
marriage, it has come to the fore that their relationship is based on more than
love, he said.He pointed out that the Supreme Court had set aside only the High
Court order annulling their marriage and no case related to terror links was
quashed. Soon after reaching Kerala, Shafin and Hadiya visited the PFI office
in Kozhikode. The PFI has been involved in several terror-related incidents, he
said.“The Left parties and the Congress have been arguing that Shefin and
Hadiya have no terror links and it was a love marriage. But their first visit
was to the PFI office. newindianexpress
PFI-run centre used hypnosis on converts in
‘love-jihad’ cases: NIA
New Delhi: A religious facilitation centre run
by PFI— under investigation for its role in cases of alleged “love jihad”—is
understood to have used “hypnotic counselling” to indoctrinate neo-converts
undergoing an ‘Islamic learning’ course there, that other faiths were inferior,
according to a NIA probe. The centre, Sathyasarini, claims to impart Islamic
religious lessons and NIA is understood to have found that preachers at the
institution believe in targeting the sub-conscious mind, to drum in propaganda
that is intended highlight the “doomed” fate of alleged non-believers.Persons
converted or attempted to be converted allegedly by PFI activists were sent to
the Sathyasarini Islamic learning centre for a 2-month religious course that
included self-suggestion or auto-suggestion techniques, sources said. PFI,
however, denies the allegations. “The agency is wilfully maligning and
tarnishing the image of a peaceful and law-abiding organisation striving hard
for social upliftment of weaker sections in the country and justice. NIA is
appeasing its masters by deviating from the path of truthful investigations,”
Mohammad Shamoon, director (public relations) in PFI told TOI.
National Commission for Minorities frowns at
harassment of minority educational institutions
New Delhi: Officials of minority-run
educational institutions in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha
live in fear because they refuse to heed requests for admission in their
institutes from local authorities. The officials are “harassed” and often booked
under “false” charges, according to the 2016-2017 annual report of the National
Commission for Minorities (NCM), that is expected to be tabled in Parliament
soon.Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are BJP-ruled, while BJD is in
power in Odisha, which has a poor track record of safety of minorities,
particularly Christians. In 1999, Australian missionary Graham Staines and his
two sons were burnt to death on January 23, 1999, by the Bajrang Dal in
Manoharpur village in Odisha. The commission urged the state governments to take
“immediate action” saying violation of the rights of minorities was totally
unacceptable. “Mostly, these are national and at times international
organisations, and harassing them in this manner affects the reputation of the state
as well as that of the government of India. NCM regularly receives
representations complaining of undue interference and harassment by government
agencies in the day-to-day functioning of minority run educational
institutions,” the report said.newindianexpress

didn’t cover “any developmental activity of any Government Dept/ Agency, any
inauguration of Hospital, School Building, Road, Bridge, statement of political
party in power or any other social/developmental activity by state government
or Govt of India.”While the NIA has questioned Kamran’s credentials as a

CBI expels 20 officers from Vyapam special
investigative team in one day
In a shocking decision, CBI has decided to
withdraw at least 20 investigative officers from Vyapam team. While
investigating the matter, the central investigative agency had set up its
Vyapam team in 2016 at Bhopal’s Professors Colony office. CBI comes up with its
new team after as many 50 people connected with Vyapam scam were killed in
mysterious circumstances. According to a national daily report, in last 6
months, CBI had removed around 70% of its officers from the investigative team.
Opposition parties are criticising government’s decision to and calling it an
attempt to influence the investigation.KK Mishra, MP Congress’ spokesperson
said. “Congress had demanded a CBI investigation into the Vyapam Scam with a
lot of hope, but it ended up giving a clean chit to many of those who
controlled the scam. I think they should close this branch.” However, CBI has
defended its decision by saying that its decision to withdraw 20 officers from
Vyapam team will not impact its investigation. One of the CBI officials said,
“In more than 100 cases, people have been charge sheeted and trials are on.
Some officials will be transferred as a matter of routine. There’s no reason to

Battles rage in Eastern Ghouta, as 'toll tops
1,000'
Syrian army and rebel groups early on Sunday
engaged in fierce battles in Eastern Ghouta, where fighting has killed at least
1,099 civilians over the past 21 days, a war monitor said. The death toll,
recorded by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) - a UK-based war

were wounded."Warplanes covered the sky in Eastern Ghouta yesterday,"
Abdelmalik Aboud, an activist in the town of Douma, told Al Jazeera on Sunday.
"The shelling was focused on the underground shelters and mosques and the
places that people have tried to hide in, due to the constant bombardment,"
he added. The rising toll comes amid claims of yet another chemical attack
overnight on the town of Arbin in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of the capital,

Morsi's son: Egypt fears British visit to my
father
Abdullah Morsi, the son of the former Egyptian
President Mohamed Morsi has said that the Egyptian government will not allow
the outside world reach his father for fear of being exposed. Earlier this
month, a group of senior British MPs, ranging from the governing Conservatives
to the opposition Labour and Liberal Democrats, petitioned the Egyptian govt to
allow them access to former President Mohamed Morsi, but they were denied. The
petition came amid growing concern over the deteriorating health of the former
president and reports emerged that he has been denied access to basic medical
treatment while in jail. Abdullah Morsi said that the Egyptian authorities are
directly responsible for the inhumane condition in which his father is
subjected to and that they are worried that this would be revealed if Morsi was
to receive visitors. Abdullah said that "logic and reason dictate that the
regime should allow the British delegation to do its work if it is serious in
refuting the accusations made against it, but the regime fears of being exposed
in front of the world, that is why it looks for justifications." aljazeera
