Religious orders conflicted by SC ruling on
living will, passive euthanasia
New Delhi:Supreme Court judgment allowing
passive euthanasia and living wills appeared to have left the otherwise
argumentative India largely quiet with many among the chattering classes
wondering what to do if faced with a decision on withdrawing medical care to a
near and dear one.Religious orders appeared to be the most conflicted as they
tried to reconcile their basic belief in the sanctity of human life with an
individual's right to choose, which is integral to freedom to practise a
religion of one's choice.Even among those who supported the judgment, there was
concern over the right being exercised responsibly.Kerala Catholic Bishops'
Council was categorical in terming the judgment "unfortunate and
condemnable". Council president Archbishop Soosa Pakiam said the verdict
would have disastrous consequences and could be misused. "The right of
life is in the hands of God. It is not acceptable to anyone who believes in
humanity to kill out of sympathy a person suffering from old age or
sickness."Catholic Bishops' Conference of India is yet to take a view on
the judgment, but priests said caring for the sick and those with no hope is a
basic tenet of Christianity.People who are old and sick should be taken care of
and protected till God decides to end their life, said a priest who did not
want to go on record in view of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council taking a
position on the issue.According to Raziul Islam Nadvi, secretary of the
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, active euthanasia is forbidden but some scholars allow
"the withdrawal of ventilator, etc, if it is not affordable and the
doctors confirm that the patient is surviving only because of this
equipment". Nadvi added:"The idea of a living will - a written
document by way of which a patient can give his explicit instructions in
advance about the medical treatment to be administered when he or she is
terminally ill or is no longer able to express informed consent - would go
against the principles of Islam."Zafar Mahmood of Zakat Foundation of
India welcomed the judgment, saying it had put so many conditions that it was
not just the family which could take the call. telegraphindia

Justice Loya may have died due to poisoning: CPIL
to SC
New Delhi:An NGO, which had sought an
independent probe into the alleged mysterious death of special CBI judge B H
Loya today claimed in the Supreme Court that he might have died due to
poisoning as he had complained of chest congestion. It said that Loya's ECG and
histopathology report indicate that he did not die due to a heart attack which
means that he may have died of poisoning.A bench of CJI Dipak Misra and
justices A M Khanwilkar and DY Candrachud was told by advocate Prashant
Bhushan, appearing for CPIL, an intervenor in the case, that reports were shown
to the doctors and forensic experts, who were of the opinion that there was no
sign of heart attack."If there was no sign that Loya suffered a heart
attack, then what made the judges who were accompanying him believe that he had
a heart attack," Bhushan asked. He said the two judges of the Bombay High Court
in their statement have said that Loya had complained of chest pain in the wee
hours of Dec. 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's
daughter."Does this not mean that he may have died due to poisoning?
Because in poisoning also there are similar symptoms of chest congestion and
blood flow stops to the heart," he said.Bhushan said that two sitting
judges of the high court have given their statements regarding the death of
judge Loya and this indicates that they are witness to the case."If this
is the case, then two judges of bench (referring to Justice AM Khanwilkar and
DY Chandrachud) who have served in Maharashtra and know these judges (HC
judges), may not hear the case,"Bhushan added. This argument prompted
Justice Khanwilkar to say, "Bhushan, we will be more than happy if the
high court hear this matter. Justice Chandrachud also interfered and said,
"If that is your argument then we will deal with it the way we deal a
case. We must tell you, we ask ourselves in every case whether we should
consider hearing the matter or not especially when the matter comes from high
court. Bhushan replied that he has not filed any application seeking recusal of
judges from the bench but all he is saying is that two of the judges in this
bench knows the Bombay High Court judges who have become witnesses in the
case.Bhushan said he had personally met many cardiologists who had seen these
reports and had ruled out that judge Loya had died of a heart attack. He pointed
out expert opinion of Dr Upendra Kaul, ex-professor of cardiology at AIIMS and
Padma Shri awardee, who had virtually ruled out a heart attack as the cause of
death, on basis of the histopathology and ECG reports. He further pointed out
that doctor at Dande Hospital and Meditrina Hospital in Nagpur had noted tall
T-waves in ECG, in their statements filed with the State.IANS

Investigation into Judge Loya’s death will
ruin judiciary’s credibility; Maharashtra govt
Maharashtra Govt has urged the Supreme Court not to order an
investigation into the death of CBI Judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya, saying it
would “destroy the credibility” of the judiciary forever, the Economic Times
reported.“It has been alleged that the entire system is dancing to the tune of
one man,” state Govt ’s counsel Harish Salve said. “If that is true, we might
as well wind up the judiciary. Four district-level judges and two High Court
judges have stated that they were present with judge Loya when he passed away.
Is it being suggested that they are conspirators in the murder?” scroll

Muzaffarnagar, threaten to convert Islam
Muzaffarnagar: Hundreds of Bhim Army
supporters gathered at Muzaffarnagar collectorate on Friday demanding release
of their jailed leader Chandrashekhar Azad. The agitators said that they were

release him on that date, all of us will convert to Islam.” The local head of

BJP made people believe Congress is muslim
party, but we have always been to temples: Sonia Gandhi
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi today
hit out at BJP, accusing the ruling party of dispersing the voice of opposition
and promoting a 'regressive vision' for the country. She castigated the ruling
party, accusing it of spreading falsehoods to 'deliberately' subvert the idea
of India, and Congress party. "Was India really a giant black hole before
2014? Is it not an insult to the intelligence of our people (to suggest so)?
This is a deliberate unwillingness to look at India's strengths over the past
decades,"she said while addressing an audience at India Today Conclave. On
Congress' defeat in the 2014 elections, Gandhi admitted said there was a
definite 'anti-incumbency'. "We were in Govt for 2 terms and definitely
there was certain amount of anti-incumbency(But) we were out-marketed in 2014.
We could not really compete with kind of (election campaign) that they went

of winning the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2014.Congress leader said it was an
issue but an exaggerated one. "For instance 2G, the previous CAG came out
with some humongous amount of money but there was a problem there. Now I think
everyone realises that it was not just highly exaggerated. How come a person
who was in-charge was given a cushy job just after retirement?"Accusing

India, France sign strategic pact on use of each other’s
military bases
New Delhi:Reflecting a growing depth in defence ties,
India and France inked a strategic pact providing for the use of each other’s
military facilities including opening naval bases to warships, an agreement
that comes amid China’s growing military expansionism in the Indo-Pacific
region. PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron held wide-ranging
deliberations during which they also decided to create an annual defence
dialogue at the ministerial level to explore ways to further deepen defence and
strategic ties. The two countries signed a pact on exchange and reciprocal
protection of classified or protected information which came in the backdrop of
Indian Govt refusing to divulge details of the multi-billion dollar Indo-French
Rafale fighter jet deal. On ties in the maritime security sphere, French
President said both the countries will have “unprecedented” level of
cooperation to ensure peace and stability in the Indian Ocean and in Pacific.
He said space agencies of both countries will have joint monitoring mechanism
for developments in the maritime sphere, while navies of the two nations will
share intelligence and call their respective military bases for any requirement.PTI

Palestinians reject US invitation to Gaza 'stakeholder'
summit
Palestinian Authority (PA) has rejected an invitation by
the White House to attend a Gaza 'stakeholders' summit next week, a senior
official of the self-Govt body said.
Ahmad Majdalani told the Voice of Palestine radio on Friday that the PA would
not attend the meeting, saying that the issue in Gaza was "political par
excellence"."[...] The US is well aware that the real cause of the
tragedy of the Gaza Strip is the unjust Israeli siege. What is needed is a
political solution to this issue, not a humanitarian," he said.Jason
Greenblatt, an assistant to President Donald Trump, said that the meeting on
March 13 will be a brainstorming session devoted to solving the humanitarian
crisis in the Gaza Strip and to improving life in the besieged enclave."In
response to the burgeoning humanitarian situation in Gaza, key countries and
stakeholders are preparing to act: There was a meeting in Cairo on Thursday,
and there will be a brainstorming session at the White House next week to find real
solutions to the problems that Hamas has caused," Greenblatt wrote. Gaza
Strip's collective of charitable organisations recently said more than 1,000
Palestinians have died as a result of the ongoing Israeli blockade on the

Muslim Brotherhood will not disappear:Saudi exile
A Saudi writer now living in the US has said that the
Muslim Brotherhood is not simply going to disappear. Jamal Khashoggi made his
assertion during an interview on Al-Jazeera TV. Despite all the pressure on the
movement, he insisted, its ideology will remain influential. The journalist
went on to explain that the movement will not be dissolved. Instead, he said,
the talk should focus on the political role of the Brotherhood. Khashoggi stressed
that what Brotherhood was exposed to during the time of former Egyptian
president Gamal Abdel Nasser from 1956 to 1970 was no more than what it is
exposed to today. He pointed out the Nasser’s regime came to an end but the
Brotherhood remained. This was a victory of sorts for the Islamist ideology
adopted by the movement since its founding by Hassan Al-Banna in 1928.“
Brotherhood won without knowing,” he suggested, adding that there was a project
for the abolition of the Islamic group by Western liberal forces and by the
communists who tried to abolish religion. According to Khashoggi, the
Brotherhood succeeded in confronting this threat with the help of the late
Saudi King Faisal Al-Saud, who was assassinated in 1975. In the end, he said,
the Islamic ideology was established in Arab societies. “At any time that
elections are held,” he claimed, “the Islamic faction — whatever its name is —
will win.” middleeastmonitor

Chinese Official Warns Against Creeping
Islamisation:Reuters
Beijing:Chinese Muslims need to guard against creeping
Islamisation, including mosques that copy foreign styles, and strive to
practice their faith in a more Chinese way, a senior Chinese Islamic official
said on Saturday.China is home to roughly 20 million Muslims, many living in
the western part of the country, from the Uighurs of Xinjiang who speak a
Turkic language to the largely sinified Hui people. While China officially
guarantees freedom of religion, it has in recent years tightened controls in
heavily Muslim areas, nervous about the possibility of radicalisation and
violence.Speaking to the largely ceremonial advisory body to China's
parliament, Yang Faming, head of the Govt -linked China Islamic Association,
said Islam had a long and glorious history in the country. But Yang warned of
problems he said had become apparent in recent years which could not be
overlooked, according to a copy of his speech carried by the official Xinhua
news agency."For example, some mosques' construction style blindly
imitates foreign models. In some areas the concept of halal has become common,
and religion interferes in secular life," he said."Some people set
great store on religious rules and much less on national law, only knowing what
it is to be a believer and not what it is to be a citizen," Yang added.
"We must certainly remain on high alert."
