handed over the command of world's sixth- largest army by troop numbers to

role in the keeping the morale of troops high.Analysts believe Bajwa's
announcement that the LoC situation would improve might be a reconciliatory
gesture towards India. However, Gen Raheel was not so conciliatory in his final
speech as the army chief, as he cautioned India against adopting an aggressive
stance in Kashmir. Raheel, 60, said in recent months "India's increasing
terrorism and aggressive stance" in Kashmir have "endangered" the
region."India should know that mistaking our policy of patience for
weakness would be dangerous," he said."This is reality, that in South

SC questions criteria to
select AMU VC
New Delhi:Supreme Court
today took exception to the submission of AMU that an eminent person can be
appointed its vice-chancellor, saying did it mean that "a singer, a

"Can anybody, unconnected with academics, be also appointed? What is the
criteria? There is no qualification, no eligibility criteria, no search
committee... who proposes the appointnment? Can anyone become VC," bench

Buttressing his argument, Ramachandran also referred to Vice President Hamid
Ansari, a career diplomat, and said that being an eminent person, he was
appointed the VC of the university during 2000-02. "Distinguished civil
servants, army generals, diplomats have held this post at the central
university under the criteria of eminent person," he said. Does it mean "a singer, a sportsman, a
musician," can be selected as the V-C, bench asked. AMU said there has
been tradition to appoint eminent persons to the post. The bench then adjourned
the hearing to Dec.6 as sought by the counsel for a party in the case. PTI

Naik terms Modi govt

‘anti-Muslim’ and alleged ban on his NGO IRF is ‘politically motivated’. Naik,
however, emphasized that he has repeatedly offered his cooperation to Central
agencies in their investigations and has justified his decision to steer clear
of India saying that he was an NRI and that his work kept him away mostly, a
report said. “I’ve repeatedly offered my cooperation to govt al agencies in
their investigations. Till a few days ago, no agency bothered to contact me,
ask me questions, send me any notice or even lodge an FIR against me. Till date
there’s been no contact and the only FIR lodged against me was done after the
ban,” Naik said.Speaking to ANI, Naik said that he will challenge the ban even
as his legal team in Delhi and Mumbai has been considering all options
possible. Responding to a query as to why he accused the PM Modi govt for the
ban and not British PM Theresa May, Naik
said, “I am not banned in the UK, I have been ‘excluded’, which means I cannot
enter UK A ban would have meant banning my speeches on television, my NGO as
well as my books, audio and video CDs. None of that has happened. My
organization and my published materials are very much in circulation in UK and
doing some commendable work in spreading the message of peace in
Islam.”Rejecting reports that he was granted Malaysian citizenship, Naik said
he has neither been banned in Malaysia nor does he have its citizenship.
“Indian media has repeated hundreds of times in the last 4 months that I was
banned in Malaysia.I’m neither banned in Malaysia nor do I have its citizenship,”

Trillions of dollars from Gulf
to enter India through Islamic Banking: ICIF
Mumbai: RBI's proposal to
open up "Islamic window" in conventional banks will lead to trillions
of dollars from Gulf nations getting invested in India, said an organisation
pushing for Islamic financial banking.Indian Centre for Islamic Finance (ICIF)
said if the RBI proposal becomes a reality, huge investments from countries
like UAE, Qatar and Bahrain will flow into India."There are various
sovereign funds in Gulf countries with trillions of dollars waiting to invest
in India. Introduction of Islamic banking will give a green signal to people in
nations like UAE, Qatar and Bahrain to invest here," ICIF General
Secretary H Abdur Raqeeb told PTI.
"In 2008, when Raghuram Rajan (who later became RBI Governor)
headed a high-level committee on financial sector reforms, we met him and
conveyed our concern about exclusion of Muslims from financial system."We
pressed for their inclusion in the sector. According to the Sachar Committee
report, Muslim-majority areas are described as 'negative zone' by banks,"
said Raqeeb, whose organisation is
spearheading campaign for introduction of interest-free Islamic
financial banking in the country. Citing various studies, he said Muslims
prefer to invest in real estate, gold, spending lavishly or even depositing in
banks without withdrawing the principle amount to avoid interest. He said no
amendments would be required in the existing Act for introduction of Islamic
banking and a notification by the Centre would suffice.PTI

After Bypoll, BJP Sweeps
Maharashtra,Gujarat Civic Polls
If bypolls and civic polls
are a referendum on demonetisation, then it looks as if PM Narendra Modi's

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, while performing well in West Bengal and Tripura.
3 weeks into demonetisation, BJP has swept the civic polls in Maharashtra and

public sentiment is behind the BJP. Out of the 126 seats being contested in the
Gujarat civic polls, the BJP has won 109 seats, taking 40 seats from the
Congress Party, which managed only 17 seats. In Maharashtra, BJP won 52 out of
147 municipal councils followed by the Shiv Sena (25), the Congress Party (22)
and NCP (17).In Maharashtra, the BJP seat tally went up from 396 in the 2011
civic polls to 851, the Congress Party's tally went down from 1,111 to less

Afghan Taliban offers
'security' for copper, gas projects
The Taliban has offered to
protect major govt projects such as the
mining of a big copper deposit and an international natural gas pipeline
project to assist the development and prosperity of war-torn Afghanistan. The
insurgents have been behind much of the violence over the last 15 years that
has frightened off investors, leaving Afghanistan unable to tap its vast
natural resources and build the infrastructure necessary to wean itself off foreign
aid.The armed group, which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,
maintains its fight is against foreign military forces and the foreign-backed govt
, not ordinary Afghans."Islamic Emirate not only backs all national
projects which are in the interest of the people and result in the development
and prosperity of the nation but are also committed to safeguarding them,"
the Taliban said in a statement."Emirate directs all its mujahideen to
help in the security of all national projects that are in the higher interest
of Islam and the country."The fighters identified the $3bn Mes Aynak
copper deposit in Logar province, near Kabul, as one project they would
protect.A Chinese company was awarded the mining contract nine years ago, but
has yet to start production because of poor security and a lack of transport
infrastructure.Taliban also mentioned the $10bn Turkmenistan, Afghanistan,
Pakistan and India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, and a regional
electricity-generation effort linking Central Asia and South Asia, known as
CASA-1000.Taliban statement came a day after the official launch of a railway

IS arrests shopkeepers for

Mosul: IS has arrested
dozens of Mosul shop owners accused of raising food prices in the nearly
besieged city, to tamp down discontent as a US-backed offensive closes in on
the group's last major stronghold in Iraq, residents said on Monday. The arrests
took place on Sunday morning in Bursa, a commercial district in the western

shop owners in the area were arrested and taken away blindfolded to unknown

former police and army officers, suspected of disloyalty or plotting rebellions
against the militants' rule. The arrest of the shop owners is meant as a
warning to retailers to refrain from price hikes that would cause unrest in the
city. Some 100,000 Iraqi govt troops, Kurdish security forces and mainly
Shi'ite militiamen are participating in the assault on Mosul, with air and
