NIA searches 12 IRF, premises,

New Delhi: NIA, conducted
search operations at 12 premises connected to Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research
Foundation (IRF) in Mumbai and seized incriminating documents, files,
electronic storage devices and about Rs12 lakh in cash.“The recovered documents
relate to various activities, including financial transactions and property
details, of Zakir Naik and IRF. To assist the search teams, a team of income
tax experts has been flown into Mumbai from the NIA HQRS in Delhi,” said an NIA
official on condition of anonymity.“A case has been registered against Zakir
Naik at our Mumbai branch and we had served notices last evening (Friday)
itself. The search in those premises has been on since then,” the NIA official
said. This step has followed quickly on the heels of the ban imposed by the
home ministry, in a gazette notification against the IRF. Home ministry said
that through his speeches and statements, Naik had been promoting enmity and
hatred between different religious groups and inspiring Muslim youths and
terrorists in India and abroad to commit terrorist acts.Sudhir Kumar Saxena,
joint secretary of MHA had stated, “we have learnt that Naik has been extolling

Thursday evening, Islamic International School (IIS) run under IRF Educational
Trust lingers in uncertainty over its operations.Mumbai Police will now take
action against people found members of the IRF or propagating its literature.
Properties attached with IRF, its offices and library, will also be under the
scanner. “We have 21 employees operating out of the Dongri office. There are no
official volunteers attached with us,” said administrative manager of IRF,
Manzoor Shaikh. The weekly scholarly programmes conducted by the IRF had
stopped in July itself, when the controversy against its founder Naik first
broke, Shaikh said. The organisation, that claims it produces literature on
Islam and spreads Islamic teachings through its programmes, also handles the
IRF Educational Trust, which runs a school from Nursery to Class X. “We are yet
to study the entire notice to understand if the Islamic International School
will be affected by the ban,” said spokesperson Arif Malik.Education minister
Vinod Tawde has, however, said the children studying in the school will be
rehabilitated so that their education is not affected.IIS’s current website
shows Zakir Naik as its principal. While vice-principal Kamal Shaikh refused to
comment, teachers working at the school said half-yearly exams were to be held
here till Dec.1. IIS runs classes in two buildings in Dongri and Mazagaon and
has over 200 children enrolled. “We have not been told about any ban by the
management. I have worked here for three years. I do not know where to go
next,” said Jamail Munwal, security guard at the school. “We will approach the

counsel for Zakir Naik, on Saturday said the case filed by the NIA against his
client under UAPA is illegal, as the Supreme Court, earlier granted a stay in a
similar case, and hence, any fresh complaint on the same grounds would stand
void."Earlier in year 2012 an FIR was registered by the office bearers of
some organisation against Zakir Naik under section 153 A and in response we
filed a petition in the Supreme Court and the court granted stay to all those
proceedings in the FIR. So fresh FIR for the same offence is not maintainable
in law so they cannot be two FIR for one offence," Solkar said.Solankar
further maintained that from 2012 till date, Dr. Naik has not given any lecture
which can be a cause of action for filing a fresh FIR against him. He, however,
conceded that the investigative agency is entitled to search and visit the
premises of the IRF, owned by Naik, and organisation would comply with all the
investigative processes carried out by the NIA."NIA, irrespective of the
legality of the FIR, is empowered to investigate the matter and they are
carrying out their investigation and we are ready to cooperate as far the
investigation is concerned. IRF has been a law abiding trust and we are ready

Kolkatta: All India Muslim
Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Saturday decided to oppose tooth and nail the
Centre’s move against the triple talaq and the imposition of Unform Civil Code
in the country.The decision was taken on the second day of 3-day closed door
convention of AIMPLB, to discuss issues ranging from triple talaq,Uniform Civil
Code (UCC) to other religious matters of the Muslims.“It has been unanimously
decided in the convention that we want triple talaq to stay and we will oppose
any move by the govt against it. We will
also oppose uniform civil code.The triple talaq has been going on for ages and
it is part of our religious rights,” TMC MP and chairman of AIMPLB reception
committee Sultan Ahmed said. AIMPLB has already launched a signature campaign
opposing the move and more than 10 crore Muslim women from across the country
have signed supporting the practice of triple talaq. The issue of alleged
harassment of Muslim youths was also taken up during the convention.“Our
President Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi, during his speech, has clearly said that
the BJP govt at the Centre has taken up an agenda of unnecessarily harassing
the Muslims of the country especially the young generation.Govt has the tendency to implicate the Muslims as
anti-nationals and harass them,” a member of the AIMPLB told PTI on condition

Code and amid demands for more time, on Friday decided to extend the deadline
to submit the feedback by a month. Commission said, keeping in mind the
“overwhelming response” from the people and various stakeholders, the
continuous inflow of replies, and requests by some seeking extension of time
for more deliberations, it is extending the Nov. 21 deadline by another 30 days

Law Board, (AIMPLB), apex body of Muslims. on Friday in its 25th annual

position of other office-bearers as all were also unanimously re-elected.It is
for the sixth time that Maulana Rabey will head the AIMPLB, which was formed
four decades ago to protect the “Shariah” or the Islamic laws. This will be his
fourth consecutive term. He was first elected in April 2002 following the death
of Qazi Mujahid-ul-Islam Qasmi in Hyderabad.Maulana Rabey later picked his
team, wherein he nominated his old panel which included Maulana Syed Wali

clerics on Friday called triple talaq sinful and against the Prophet's
traditions but opposed its scrapping.Addressing a vast gathering of women at
Sunni Dawat-e-Islami's 26th annunal ijtema (congregation) at Azad Maidan on
Friday, the religious scholars denounced triple talaq, or divorce in one
sitting, but did not approve of the govt plan to ban it."Ban is not the cure to
the disease. Let Muslims get educated and they will themselves stop using this
disgraceful method of divorce," said Mufti Nizamuddin Razavi, answering
queries on a number of issues on the first day of the ijtema, which will
continue till Sunday.He emphasised that while two witnesses are needed before
nikah is solemnized as it is a social contract, no such witness is needed when
a man divorces his wife. "Divorce is valid if it is done orally, through
SMS, WhatsAPP, email," he said.Reiterating the patriarchal interpretation
of Quranic commandments, Razavi told women to obey their husbands as he is
haakim (ruler or commander) and wife is mahkoom (ruled)."One who is ruled
cannot dismiss or fire the ruler. It is always the ruler who has the right to
dismiss those whom he commands. Therefore, women cannot divorce their husbands

Mandal which is for a uniform civil code has said it will accept a law which
gives justice to the community's women.It was in response to law commission
chairman Justice BS Chauhan's statements that the code may not be about
standardization but focus on fighting social injustice and bring gender just
laws."Women must have rights and should not face any injustice. The Muslim
Personal Law Board and other religious organizations are saying it is against
Shariat and against Islam. The Quran does not say that women should face injustice,"
mandal president Shamsuddin Tamboli said.The mandal will organize a national
conference on Muslim women's rights on November 26 from 10am to 5pm at Rashtra
Seva Dal. "The event will be inaugurated by Shayara Bano who has
petitioned the Supreme Court to declare triple talaq, polygamy and halala (the
custom to consummate marriage with another man if a woman wants to go back to
her first husband) illegal. The event will be attended by Muslim reformists
Noor Zaheer, Arshad Ali, Sophia Khan and Rubina Patel," Tamboli added.

I-T dept. issues notices to hundreds, seeks 'source' of fund
New Delhi: Acting swiftly,
Income Tax dept. issued hundreds of notices seeking "source" of funds
from individuals and firms who have deposited huge amounts of cash in banks
using the scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.Officials said the taxman
has begun a country-wide enquiry in this regard and has issued notices under
section 133 (6) of Income Tax Act (power to call for information) in various
cities and towns of the country.They said the notices were issued after banks
reported to it certain cases of "unusual or suspicious volumes of cash
deposits" in their accounts, primarily beyond Rs 2.5 lakh ."Notices are
being issued where the department feels the cash deposits made in the
demonetised currency is suspect. This is part of the vigil that the taxman has
deployed to check instances of tax evasion, money laundering and black money in
the wake of the demonetisation of the two high denomination currencies on Nov.

Court warned on Friday that people standing in long queues for hours every day
for scarce cash could turn riotous, as it asked the Centre to take urgent
measures to end their ordeal."It is a serious issue. This affects the
entire population. You (govt) cannot deny there is a serious problem. There
could be riots," a bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice AR Dave
said, drawing a sharp retort from attorney general Mukul Rohatgi.The bench also
declined the Centre's plea to restrain all other courts and high courts from
entertaining petitions challenging demonetisation and criticised the decision
to bring down the maximum amount that could be converted against the outlawed
notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 from Rs 4,500 to Rs 2,000.The Centre argued that
HCs taking up legal challenges would result in multiple litigations. The bench,
however, said the pleas seeking the intervention of courts reflected the
"distress".Rohatgi replied, "There is no riot. People have
supported the govt 's move."The bench also criticised the govt for reducing the daily cash exchange limit to
Rs 2,000, after the court had asked if the limit could be raised from Rs

India paid Rs 10 crore bribe to ‘CM MP’: NewsBits.in report
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan received Rs 10 crore
bribe from Sahara India Group just ahead of the 2013 assembly elections, Income
Tax dept.documents suggest. This has been alleged in an application moved by
prominent lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan in Supreme Court seeking
investigation into the matter. The documents, part of IT appraisal report
related to raid on Sahara India group premises in November 2014 (copies with
NewsBits.in), have entries showing two cash payments of Rs 5 crore each to ‘CM
MP’ through Neeraj Vashisth(a) – deputy secretary with MP CM House.Page 89 of
the IT appraisal report shows that the cash payments were made on Sept. 29 and
Oct.1, 2013, in Bhopal just ahead of the assembly polls held in November 2013.
The payments from the Sahara side, was through one ‘Jaiswal ji’.The same
documents, now being termed as ‘Sahara diaries’, allegedly show that PM Narendra Modi received Rs 40.1 crore as bribe
from Sahara India between Oct. 2013 and Feb. 2014, when he was the Gujarat CM and already a PM ial candidate of BJP.Swaraj
Abhiyan chief and renowned Supreme Court lawyer, Prashant Bhushan has alleged a
cover up in the matter and he has petitioned the Supreme Court apart from other

92 Lakh Cash Seized From Vehicle Owned By Maharashtra Minister
More than a week after
high-value currency notes were demonetised, Rs 91.5 lakh in cash was found in a
private vehicle belonging to Solapur-based Lok Mangal group, which is
controlled by senior BJP leader and Maharashtra cooperation minister Subhash
Deshmukh. Osmanabad collector Prashant Narnaware confirmed that a routine check
of vehicles by a flying squad set up for the ensuing municipal council polls
netted the amount on Thursday. A Lok Mangal staffer in the car said the cash
belonged to the Lok Mangal bank. Deshmukh said it was meant for payment to
workers in a sugar factory affiliated to Lok Mangal group. Vehicle has been
impounded, while the cash has been deposited in the local treasury. In the
past, Lok Mangal was under the scanner of Sebi for irregularities in mobilising

Toll Rises To 55
As people continued to
struggle to get cash on the ninth day after demonetisation, the death toll rose
to 55. These are confirmed deaths reported in the national and regional media.
The number of unreported deaths may be higher. While most deaths are of the
elderly waiting in long bank queues, there are quite a few suicides, especially
of housewives.Virender Basoya, a 25-year-old businessman in Delhi, hanged
himself to a ceiling fan and died. His wife said he was depressed as he had not
been able to exchange Rs 12 lakh worth of old currency notes, money he had
received as payments.In Chittoor, AP, 70-year-old Ratna Pillai died waiting in
a bank queue. Distressed over the long queue, he approached the bank manager,
and collapsed. Rajesh Kumar, a 56-year-old bank manager in Haryana's Rohtak
district, died after working three days and nights at his co-operative bank,
handling large crowds. When the security guard opened the door, Kumar was found
dead.70-year-old Ishteyak Ahmad died waiting in a bank queue in Azamgarh.
Jagdish Panwar, a 62-year-old tea seller in Rajasthan's Sikar, died of heart
attack as he was stressed over not having cash for his daughter's wedding.
Sheik Basheer, 35, an auto-driver in Nizamabad district of Telangana, immolated
himself and died because a financier refused to accept his old currency notes
as loan repayment for his vehicle.Mohammad Shahzad, a manual labourer, died
waiting in a bank queue in Meerut. It was the fourth consecutive day he was
standing in the queue to try and exchange his currency notes.In Bhind district
of Madhya Pradesh, an ex-serviceman, Babulal Valmiki, 70, collapsed just 100 metres
away from the bank. He was declared dead at the hospital. He had gone to
exchange old currency notes worth ₹12,000.

After PM Narendra Modi’s demonetisation move, the
country has gone into frenzy and people are coming up with bizarre ways to move
their money and also finding notorious ways to manage cash flow in their daily
lives. According to a TOI, 4 students from MP’s Shajapur photocopied the new Rs
2,000 note, used it in a local confectionery to buy items worth Rs 200 and
managed to get away with Rs 1,800 in their hand. Reportedly, the children were
on their way to school at 6am on Nov.17 when they entered a milk parlour owned
by Gopalkrishna Yadav. They bought milk for Rs 200 and handed him Rs 2,000 note
which he happily accepted and returned the remaining change to them.He
suspected the note’s authenticity in the afternoon and discussed the same with
his son. The two, reportedly, visited the national bank’s branch and upon
asking if the note is real, they got the shock of their lives. The bank
officials told them the note is a coloured photocopy of the original
currency.Yadav, reportedly, lodged a complaint with the police but it seems
difficult to find the culprits. “We have taken up the matter for investigation.
No case was registered as legally, one requires at least 5 fake currency notes
to proceed with a case of counterfeiting,” Shajapur Kotwali police station
in-charge Rajendra Verma told TOI.

govt’s move on demonetisation, meat processing plants in western UP, already at
the receiving end of action by cow-protection vigilantes, have begun shutting
shop.Units that have downed their shutters include MIQ Plant, Al Faheem and Al
Saqib, all of which are links of a chain of abattoirs/processing plants in UP.
A majority of those in the meat and meat-related industries are Dalits and
Muslims. Meat exporters and businessmen BusinessLine spoke to estimate that
roughly about 20,000 of these workers will be rendered unemployed because of
the cash crunch.While the announcement and economic impact of demonetisation is
too sudden for a political assessment, some, like former Meerut mayor and BSP
MP Haji Shahid Akhlaq, believe it will not sharpen communal divisions in the
area, which has been polarised since the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013. He
believes the economic crisis is a unifying factor because it affects the Muslim
meat exporter, his Dalit employees and the farmer from whom he buys his raw
material.For the moment, anxiety and fear is widespread in this industry, which
is closely connected to the farmer and helps him by purchasing unproductive
animals. Akhlaq, who also owns the multi-crore Al Saqib Meat Exports, says his
meat plants are shut and he has had to lay off 1,000 workers.Along with Punjab,
Maharashtra and AP, UP is among the top
buffalo meat-producing States. Statistics from UP Animal Husbandry Department
indicate that the State contributed 7,515.14 lakh kg of buffalo meat in
2014-15. While meat from sheep, goat, pigs and poultry is consumed
domestically, buffalo meat is mostly exported.Trade estimates indicate about
1.1 million tonnes of buffalo meat was exported, earning over $3.2 billion in

upon the rights of minorities, a host of institutions representing different
communities have said, expressing fears that right-wing ideology may replace
secular views in text books.The institutions have raised concerns over reports
on the BJP-led govt ’s move to impose yoga, Sanskrit and the ancient gurukul
system of learning, saying that they will increase marginalisation of the
Muslim community. They have also urged the govt to include educationalists from diverse

counsellor at India’s UN Mission said on Thursday. “My delegation, therefore,

dealing with humanitarian affairs by 115 votes to 38 with 31 abstentions after
an acrimonious debate and the adoption of an amendment to recognise the

man, who had converted to Islam six months ago, was brutally hacked to death at
Farook Nagar in Kodinhi, here, in the wee hours on Saturday. Faisal P, alias

at about 4 am by local residents. An auto rickshaw, which he had used for his

The Office of the
Prosecutor (Office) at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has affirmed the
occupied status of the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, in a blow to Israel’s
claims to the contrary.A new report on preliminary examination activities,
published on 14 November, includes an update on the Office’s activities in
relation to Palestine.As part of providing context, the Office notes Israel’s
position regarding the Gaza Strip since its unilateral redeployment of settlers
and armed forces in 2005 (so-called ‘disengagement’), namely that “it is no
longer an occupying power in Gaza.” Office continues: “By contrast, it may be
argued that Israel nonetheless remains an occupying power as a result of the
scope and degree of control that Israel has retained over the territory of Gaza
– a position that the Office has previously taken in the context of the

Norway’s third largest city
has voted to boycott all goods and services produced in illegal Israeli
settlements located in the occupied Palestinian territories.Trondheim City
Council approved the motion yesterday, in a resolution that states how “illegal
settlements are expanding, the construction of the wall continues, Palestinians
are subjected to daily harassment and face major obstacles in their daily
lives.”The resolution added: “This is a policy that Trondheim Municipality
cannot support. The municipality will therefore refrain from purchasing goods and
services produced in the occupied territories.”

expanding its nuclear arsenal and has developed an estimated stockpile of 130
to 140 warheads for delivery as well as modifying some of its fighter jets
including F-16s to deliver nukes, Bulletin of Atomic Scientists said in its

that analysis of a large number of commercial satellite images of Pak army’s
garrisons and air force bases shows what appear to be mobile launchers and
underground facilities that might be related to nuclear forces.“Pakistan

Thousands of Iraqis fleeing
Mosul 'cross into Syria'
More than 14,000 Iraqis
fleeing the offensive against ISIL in Mosul have crossed the border into Syria
since the start of the operation a month ago, sources from a UN affiliated
agency told Al Jazeera.According to the sources, as many as 8,000 of the Iraqis
crossed into Syria's Hasakah province, and some are now in the al-Hol refugee
camp.Close to 5,000 have also reached Raqqa, ISIL's stronghold in Syria, while
hundreds of others are spread out in Deir Az Zor, Aleppo and Idlib, but are not
staying in refugee camps.Medical sources also confirmed to Al Jazeera that they
have treated or met Iraqi civilians in Syria's Idlib province who were coming

40 civilians killed in
fresh airstrikes on Aleppo
Aleppo: At least 40 people
were killed and scores injured Saturday in a new wave of regime and Russian
airstrikes on the war-battered Aleppo city in northeastern Syria, according to
a pro-opposition civil defense official.Najib al-Ansari said Russian and regime
warplanes carried out several raids on opposition-held areas in eastern
Aleppo.“Forty civilians were killed and 180 others injured in the attacks,” he said.According
to al-Ansari, civil defense teams were struggling to reach the bombed areas to
search for survivors under the debris.On Friday, around 40 people were killed
