Interference in personal
law will not be tolerated’: All Muslim sects - Sunni, Shia, Barelvi, Deobandi,
Ahlehadis warn govt on Uniform Civil
Code
Mumbai: Scholars and
clergymen from different Muslim sects, under the banner of All India Muslim
Majlise-e-Mushawarat, on Sunday registered their protest against the Law
Commission's consultation on triple talaq and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).In a
rare display of solidarity, Islamic scholars and clerics of all Muslim sects on
Monday attacked the government for trying to introduce a Uniform Civil Code.
The scholars and clerics from Sunni, Shia, Barelvi, Deobandi and Ahlehadi sects
registered their protest against what they termed was "the government's
interference in personal laws".The meeting in Mumbai was chaired by
Maulana Sayed Mohamed Khalid Ashraf, the president of Daruloom
Mohamdiya.Prominent among those who attended the meeting were All India Ulema
Council president Maulana Zaherudin Khan, Mushawarat president Naveed Hamid and
general secretary Mujtaba Farooq, All India Muslim Personal Law Board executive
committee member Maulana Sayed Athar Ali, Jamiat Islami Hind vice president
Maulana Nusrat Ali, internationally-famous Haji Ali Dargah's Imam Maulana Mohd

Haideri and others."Any interference in Muslim Personal Law will not be
tolerated. Any efforts to impose a Common Civil Code in the name of social
reform and gender justice will prove counter- productive," they said in a
joint statement here."The government should respect this position of
Muslims instead of conspiring to put an end to it. The government cannot force
Muslims to follow other communities in issues related to personal laws as it
would amount to an infringement of their fundamental rights."Those
clamouring against triple talaq and demanding a ban on polygamy are a minuscule
minority and are not representative of the Indian Muslim community," said
Maulana Sayed Mohamed Khalid Ashraf. All India Ulema Council president Maulana

Centre’s stand on triple
talaq based on gender justice: Ravi Shankar Prasad
New Delhi:Union Law
Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said the Centre’s affidavit on the triple
talaq issue, which is being heard in the Supreme Court, was based on the
principles of assuring gender justice, gender equality and dignity. Minister
stressed that the right to freedom of religion did not enjoin “every pernicious
practice” as being integral to it.In an interview,Minister, who has been deeply
involved in the framing of the govt’s response to the Supreme Court on the
matter, said the Law Commission’s wider consultation on the question of a
Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was separate from the triple talaq issue.“You have to
understand that certain victims of triple talaq from the Muslim community had
gone to the Supreme Court challenging its validity. The Court had asked for a
response from the government. Ours is a well thought-out response. It is
fundamentally based upon gender justice, gender equality and gender dignity.
All these three flow directly from the fundamental values of our Constitution,”
Prasad said. Minister said All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s assertion,
that the Modi government was intent on interfering with Islam rather than any
other minority community, including the Jains, in terms of religious practice,
was “baseless.”Prasad denied that uniform civil code was part of the
ideological core of the BJP. Minister stressed that the government had taken
this stand. Explaining the Centre’s stand in court recently over the issue of
the triple talaq, Prasad said,“We stated our view when asked by the Supreme
Court, in the case of religious practices of other communities, if there is a
challenge in court, we will state our position,” he said. the hindu

Hyderabad;Chairman of State

Hyderabad emerges as hub of
campaign against Uniform Civil Code
Hyderabad: This historic
city with a rich Muslim past has been at the forefront of most national
campaigns on issues related to the community. And with the movement against a
discussion on the Uniform Civil Code by the Law Commission gathering strength,
it once again finds itself in the lead. Many muslim organisations here feel the
Law Commission’s move is the thin edge of the wedge in the attempt to impose a
uniform personal law on the community. A call given by AIMPLB for a
country-wide signature campaign against the Uniform Civil Code is receiving
good response, with groups belonging to various sects working together. Various
organisations are collecting signatures of both men and women to oppose any
move “to interfere with Muslim personal law”. The campaign has been taken up at
various mosques in the city with men and women signing a proforma prescribed by
AIMPLB, said to be apex body representing muslims in the country. The proforma
for women in part reads: “We the undersigned Muslim women do hereby declare that
we are fully satisfied with all the rulings of Islamic Shariah, particularly
Nikah, inheritance, divorce, khula and Faskh (dissolution of marriage). We deny
that these need any reform or there is any scope for change therein.” The
proforma also says the signee “firmly stands” with the AIMPLB to “safeguard
Sharia law”.Imams at mosques, in their sermons, are speaking about what they
see as a first step toward imposing the Uniform Civil Code by the government at
the Centre. They are exhorting Muslims to unite to defeat the proposal. On
Oct.19, Muslim United Forum is organising a protest meeting at Darussalam, the
HQRS of AIMIM to show unity on the
issue. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and leaders of other constituents of the
forum representing various sects will address the meeting.Owaisi has said he
would respond to the Law Commission’s questionnaire, although he says a uniform
code for personal matters would not be good.IANS

Modi bumps into Xi,
Prachanda on sidelines: The Hindu
Goa: An unusual trilateral meeting
took place here on Saturday evening, which highlighted the significance of
Nepal in India’s ties with China. The unscheduled meeting reportedly began when
PM Narendra Modi walked in when President Xi Jinping of China was meeting with
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ of Nepal.Nepali sources confirmed
that 15 minute-long meeting was unscheduled and unplanned and took place after
Nepal and China held a bilateral discussion on the sideline of the BRICS summit
here. Prachanda’s son, Prakash Dahal was also present in the venue. Immediately
after the meeting Prime Minister Modi and President Xi left for a photo session
for BRICS leaders. However, sources said that the meeting was held in a cordial
atmosphere with all 3 seeking more cooperation on issues of mutual
interest.Following the meeting Prakash Dahal placed several photographs of the
meeting on his Facebook page. Writing in Nepali, he said, that the meeting was
“coincidental”. “With the help of right support from these major countries,
Nepal’s prosperity is possible,” he wrote on his Facebook page.Earlier,
President Xi and Prime Minister Prachanda held a bilateral meeting. During the
meeting President Xi described China and Nepal as countries that are connected

China defends Pakistan

Beijing: A day after PM
Narendra Modi called Pakistan a "mothership of terrorism", China on
Monday strongly defended its all-weather ally, saying it is against linking any

Pakistan's "great sacrifices". In a sharp reaction to a question

China impedes India’s
attempt to mention Pakistan-based JeM, LeT in Goa Declaration:TOI
Goa: Given China's
presence, a specific mention of cross-border terrorism was never going to be
possible but India was expecting the declaration to mention India-specific
groups like Jaish-e-Muhammed and LeT. However, as MEA secretary Amar Sinha
said, Brics nations couldn't arrive at a consensus on the
issue."Pakistan-based outfits are focused on India. It doesn't concern
them (other Brics nations) really, it affects us," Sinha said. This was
disappointing for India because international groups like the Islamic State and
Jabhat-al-Nusra found mention in the declaration. Without mentioning the Uri
attack, the declaration merely condemned "the recent several attacks,
against some Brics countries, including that in India.
BRICS Summit: Why China
& Russia did not name Pakistan on terrorism: Praveen Swami's write up
"PM (Modi) proclaimed,
in his closing statement at the summit, that BRICS member-states were “agreed
that those who nurture, shelter, support and sponsor such forces of violence
and terror are as much a threat to us as the terrorists themselves”. BRICS 109
paragraph summit declaration, however, doesn’t have a single sentence
reflecting this purported consensus—not even the words “nurture”, “shelter” or
“sponsor”. Worse, from India’s optic, the summit declaration calls for action
against all UN-designated terrorist organisations which include Lashkar-e-Taiba
and Jaish-e-Muhammad but names only the Islamic State and al-Qaeda’s proxy,
Jabhat al-Nusra—both threats to China and Russia but not to India. China’s
President Xi Jinping, said success against terrorism made it imperative to
“addresses both symptoms and root causes”—a stock-phrase Islamabad often uses
to refer to the conflict over Kashmir. Russian President Vladimir Putin made no
mention of terrorism emanating from Pakistan at all. Add to this, the United
States’ studied refusal to be drawn into harsh action against Pakistan and
there’s a simple lesson to be drawn: less than a month after it began, the PM’s
campaign to isolate Pakistan is not gaining momentum..." Indian Express

Inspector Zia-ul-Haque
facing RSS ire: ‘They have ensured police won’t touch them again’
Bhopal:“I think their ego

officials won’t dare touch them again,” said 37-year-old Town Inspector
Zia-ul-Haque, who has been on the run since the arrest of zila pracharak Suresh
Yadav from the RSS office in Baihar town of Balaghat district on Sept.25.
Haque, since suspended, was in-charge of the Baihar police station. Accused of
beating Yadav at RSS office and in custody, he and seven other police officials
have been charged with attempt to murder, rioting, criminal intimidation and
robbery. Nearly 90 per cent of the staff at the police station was Hindu, but
it was his religion that got highlighted, Haque said, speaking from an
undisclosed location. Given his religion, he had got used to observing caution
while dealing with communal situations over the years, he added. He had once
been accused of supporting a Muslim candidate in a local poll, Haque said.On
Sept.24 and 25, Muslims came to the Baihar police station complaining about an
“anti-Islam” WhatsApp message by Yadav. A cautious Haque spoke to the
superintendent of police before proceeding towards RSS office. ASP Rajesh
Sharma led the team. The claim that police were accompanied by Muslim
complainants was a lie, he said.Pained at the charge that he kept assaulting
Yadav, who repeatedly fell unconscious, Haque said, “Police team booked Yadav
only after confiscating his mobile from which the WhatsApp message was sent.”
Yadav’s first medical report did not speak of any serious injury at all, he
said. Haque recalled spending the night cowering in a room above the police
station after it was surrounded by hundreds of slogan-shouting Hindu activists
following Yadav’s arrest. They demanded that he be handed over to them, Haque
said, called him names and said he should be sent to Pakistan.Lashing out at
his seniors for “deserting” them, Haque, who joined the police force in 2007,
said, “Police department did not stand by us while ministers called on Yadav… I
don’t have faith in the SIT (which is probing the incident) or the police
force.”RSS leader, who is admitted in Jabalpur Hospital since the alleged
beating, has been visited by three ministers, including Home Minister Bhupendra

initial violence was localised around Hazinagar’s Naihati Jute Mill area where
