Egypt police shoot dead
Brotherhood leaders Mohamed Kamal, Yasser Shehata; Org terms it extra judicial murder
Cairo: 2 leaders of Egypt’s
Muslim Brotherhood group were shot dead by Egyptian security forces south of
Cairo, the country’s interior ministry said. In a Tuesday statement, the
ministry said Mohamed Kamal, 61, was killed along with Yasser Shehata in a
shootout late Monday in Cairo’s Bassateen neighborhood after a police raid on
their apartment. The ministry claimed Kamal was the founder of the
Brotherhood’s armed wing and blamed him for a spate of attacks on security
forces, including last year’s assassination of prosecutor-general Hisham
Barakat. But London-based Brotherhood leader Mohamed Soudan cast doubts on the
circumstances of Kamal’s killing.“Authorities announced the death of Kamal and
Shehata shortly after local media reported that they had been arrested,” Soudan
said . “This means that both leaders had been liquidated,” he said. Muslim Brotherhood’s social media accounts
reported Monday that Kamal had disappeared, but did not provide any more
information. Egypt has been roiled by
turmoil since the military deposed Morsi, the country’s first freely elected
president, in a 2013 coup. Anadolu Agency

Ready to face any inquiry,
says AMU VC after HRD ministry seeks Prez's nod for inquiry against him
Aligarh: VC of AMU has said
he was "prepared to face any inquiry", a day after reports emerged
that the HRD ministry is mulling high-level probe into alleged financial and
administrative irregularities committed by him."Allegations of financial
and administrative irregularities are untrue and have been designed to sully my
image by vested interests",VC, AMU, Lt Gen (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah said."I
am however fully prepared to face any such inquiry if and when it is
instituted," he added. When asked whether NDA govt was targeting him for
championing the cause of the university s minority character against the
policies of the Modi govt , the VC denied it. "The charges against me are
being levelled by some vested interests to jeopardise and prejudice the ongoing
case against my appointment in the apex court," he said.He alleged that
the same "vested interests" which were instrumental in filing the
case challenging his appointment, are also responsible for current controversy.
According to university sources, Shah today wrote to the HRD Ministry seeking
clarifications regarding the purported inquiry on the grounds that such reports
have undermined his position as the head of the institution. According to media
reports HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has sought the President’s approval to

Surgical strikes: Row
deepens as politicians bicker over ‘evidence’
New Delhi: A political
slugfest has erupted over India’s surgical strikes on terror launch pads across
the LoC, with leaders from different political parties trading barbs over its
veracity. Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam on Tuesday termed the operation
“fake”, provoking stinging criticism from BJP even as his own party said that
it “totally dissociates” from his remarks. He went on to demand ‘some evidence’
to prove that the strikes did take place. As the row over Nirupam’s comments
erupted, the party dissociated itself from the incident, saying it had taken a
serious note of those.Union minister Uma Bharti slammed politicians seeking evidence
of the strikes and said, “Those leaders who say that if Pakistan is demanding
evidence about surgical strike, they should be given the evidence, such people
should take the citizenship of Pakistan.”On Tuesday, speaking to a TV channel,
Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “Having taken political ownership for the
cross-border action and having publicised it so much, it is only to be expected
that people will demand that the video be released,” he said.“Having thought
through the consequences, let the government respond to the demand for
releasing videos,” he said.On Monday, Delhi chief minister Kejriwal too stirred
a controversy when he, after praising PM Modi for the strikes, asked for the
release of proof of the operation to ‘expose’ Islamabad.Union urban development
minister Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday responded to calls for release of evidence
and said, “No one has any question about surgical strikes except the Congress
and the chief minister of Delhi. I want to tell them they should not worry about
the evidence. It will be presented.”HT
BJP playing politics over
surgical strike issue: Kejriwal

AAP believes that surgical strikes did take place, Kejriwal said that in his
video message yesterday he had only appealed to PM Narendra Modi to give a
befitting reply. Indian express

UN rights chief warns
Russia over Syria raids
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/10/rights-chief-warns-russia-syria-air-raids-161004100701127.html
UN High Commissioner for
Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein warned Russia on Tuesday over the use of
incendiary weapons in Syria's besieged rebel enclave of eastern Aleppo, and
said crimes by one side did not justify illegal acts by the other.Hundreds of
civilians have been killed or injured in air strikes since the collapse of the
latest ceasefire and Syrian govt's announcement last month of a Russia-backed
offensive to retake Aleppo. Repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure,
including hospitals, have drawn international condemnation - and accusations of
war crimes. Zeid said that the situation in Aleppo demanded bold new
initiatives "including proposals to limit the use of the veto by the
permanent members of the Security Council", which would enable the UN body
to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court
(ICC)."Such a referral would be more than justified given the rampant and
deeply shocking impunity that has characterised the conflict and the magnitude
of the crimes that have been committed, some of which may indeed amount to war
crimes and crimes against humanity," he said in a statement. According to
Fadela Chaib, spokeswoman for the World Health Organization, at least 342
people, including 106 children, had been killed in eastern Aleppo between Sept.23 and Oc.t2. A further 1,129
people, including 261 children, had been wounded. aljazeera
