Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s steps to counter negative
propaganda against Islam
New Delhi:Setting its agenda for the next 4
years, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Saturday said it would set up Islamic
information centres and use social media to dispel the “negative propaganda”
against the religion and establish entrepreneurship development centres for
Muslim youth, among other welfare measures. At a press conference here, the
Islamic organisation’s president, Syed Saadatullah Husaini, spoke about the
programme till 2023 after the new set of office-bearers were elected earlier
this year.“The new policy and programme of the JIH (2019-2023) is designed to
address pressing contemporary problems. The Jamaat would focus on Indian
society, seeking to rebuild it on healthy basis. Universal values would be
protected and attempts will be made to dispel the atmosphere of distrust and
conflict,” a JIH statement said. The statement said it would aim at
communicating the “true message” of Islam and “remove misunderstandings”. Islamic
information centres and social media, videos and films would be used to
“present true picture of Islam”.For Muslims, the organisation proposed
developing model localities and setting up entrepreneurship development
centres.“Forums would be initiated for better communication among citizens e.g.
FDCA(Forum for Democracy and Communal Amity), Sadbhawna Manch and Dharmic Jan
Morcha. The govt machinery would be reminded of its duty to ensure respect for

Kartarpur corridor: Pakistan agrees to build
bridge, allow visa-free travel to Indian pilgrims
New Delhi:Pakistan, in principle, has agreed
to build a bridge at Zero Line on Indo-Pakistan border at Dera Baba Nanak at
the earliest to facilitate the movement of pilgrims along the Kartarpur
corridor, the Ministry of External Affairs said
Sunday. The decision was taken after a two-hour meeting between the two
sides met in Wagah to iron out the modalities of connectivity, the safety of
pilgrims and infrastructural needs.Till the bridge is constructed, India
offered to make interim arrangements for making the corridor operational in
Nov.2019, to mark the birth anniversary of 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru
Nanak Dev.So far, Pakistan had insisted on a causeway and were reluctant on
building a bridge. India was of the view that not building a bridge would lead
to flooding of Indian areas during monsoon when the Ravi river overflows.Giving
into India’s demand to allow 5,000 pilgrims each day, Islamabad also decided to
allow visa-free travel for Indian passport holders. Indian side also requested
Pakistan to allow OCI cardholders visa-free movement along the corridor as
well. Replying to a question about how many Indian Sikhs will be issued permit
at the opening of the corridor in Nov, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson
Mohammad Faisal said: “It may be 5,000 or 8,000…I cannot give the exact number.
This has to be decided yet.”Indian delegation arrived at Wagah on Sunday.India
also underscored the importance of the safety of pilgrims travelling along the
route. “Pakistan side assured our delegation that no anti-India activity would
be allowed,” MEA said.Indian delegation has also sought consular presence in
Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara to be able to provide assistance to the pilgrims if
required.Pakistan also highlighted the infrastructural constraints on its side
and added that they might be able to accommodate the pilgrims only in a phased
manner. India has, however, asked Pakistan to reconsider its position considering
a large number of pilgrims who want to visit the site. “Pakistan PM Imran Khan wants peace in the region. He is
committed to open the corridor in time for the 550th birth anniversary
celebrations of Guru Nanak in Nov.2019,” Faisal added.Meanwhile, Pakistan
dropped controversial Sikh leader Gopal Singh Chawla from its team that held
talks with India. “Apparently, removal of Chawla is a damage control step by
the Imran Khan govt,”official told PTI, adding that he had become so
controversial that Khan Govtwas forced to revamp the whole PSGPC.indian express

Sidhu resigns from Punjab Cabinet, gets invite

Amid the ongoing tussle with Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, Congress leader Navjot Singh
Sidhu resigned from the state cabinet. Announcing the decision on Twitter,
Sidhu shared the resignation letter addressed to Rahul Gandhi. The resignation
is dated June 10, the day he had met then AICC president Rahul Gandhi. He made letter
public on Sunday. However, a spokesperson of CMO said CM Amarinder Singh has
not received the resignation letter. Both Singh and Sidhu have been at
loggerheads ever since the Cabinet reshuffle on June 6. Sidhu was divested of
the local govt and tourism and cultural affairs departments over
“non-performance.” He was given charge of power and new and renewable energy.
In an apparent snub, Sidhu was also left out of the consultative groups formed
by CM 2 days after the cabinet reshuffle to accelerate the implementation of
the govt’s flagship programmes. Sidhu had then approached Gandhi and “apprised
him of the situation”, besides handing over a letter to him. He also did not
attend the Cabinet meeting held thereafter. “Why should I attend the meeting
when there is a trust deficit in me? My seat in Cabinet is three inches away
from CM. If he had expressed distrust in me publicly, where is the point in
being seated next to him?” Sidhu had said.Congress had deputed party veteran

Karnataka: BJP split on staking claim,
coalition hopes to win trust vote
Bengaluru:On a day that 5 more rebel MLAs
approached the Supreme Court, accusing Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh of sitting on
their resignations and saying they were “being threatened to support the
government”, deep divisions emerged within the BJP in Karnataka on the issue of
staking claim to form a new govt. With a section of BJP that’s aligned to the
party’s high command not in favour of forming a new Govtgiven the hung nature
of the current Assembly, the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition is hopeful of
winning the trust vote that CM H D
Kumaraswamy sought on Friday. The lack of cohesion in the state BJP, coupled
with efforts of the Congress to bring back a few of its more amenable rebels
(13 of the 16 who resigned since July 6 are Congress MLAs) to the legislature
for the trust vote, are likely to help the coalition win the trust vote”.“A few
of the Opposition members may not turn up for the vote. There are also efforts
to convince some of the rebels who did not go to Mumbai,’’ said a state
Congress source.Kumaraswamy’s announcement on Friday in the state Assembly that
he would seek a trust vote took the Yeddyurappa-led BJP by surprise since veteran
leader and his supporters are keen on forming a Govtwith Congress-JD(S)
dissidents. Yeddyurappa did not attend a meeting of the Business Advisory
Council of the Assembly to schedule the trust vote and stated that he would
like to wait for the Supreme Court’s decision on pleas filed by 10 rebel MLAs –
now 15, after 5 more MLAs moved the court on Saturday — for acceptance of their
resignations. If the resignations of 16 rebel MLAs of ruling Congress-JD(S)

worst cases of violence, including mass murder, gang-rape of women and children
and burning of thousands of homes. However, there are no signs yet that Rohingya

the disbursement,Myanmar Govthas also handed over a list of 21 other projects
that it wants India to fund as part of the agreement, including the
construction of small villages, culverts and school buildings.Govt official
said contrary to the general impression that Myanmar govt is resisting the
return of Rohingya, it is actually keen on assuring them of a safe passage to
their villages, and India wants to “create incentives” for the refugees to go
home. So far, the official said, over 20,000 refugees’ names have been sent to

Mumbai ATS to blame, say convicts of 7/11

Mumbai:At a remembrance meeting in memory of
victims of 7/11 train blast case in 2006, Innocence Network accused the Mumbai
ATS of concocting evidences and framing 12 people and said that it would be

with death sentences while seven were handed life imprisonment in the case
while the thirteenth accused was let off 4 years back. While families of all the
convicts attended the remembrance meeting on Wednesday, 13 years after the
attack, the network also raised the demand to do away with “draconian”
legislations like UAPA which allows the prosecution to keep the accused behind
bars for years without any concrete evidence.Sharib Ali, one of the founding
members of the Innocence Network, stressed how MCOCA law should not even have

Assam: Miyah Poets Release Statement
Condemning 'Baseless' Allegations
New Delhi: A joint statement issued by Miyah
poets and the ten persons named in an FIR filed by a Guwahati-based journalist
this past July 10, alleging that they are trying to spread communal disharmony
ahead of the publication of final National Register of Citizens (NRC). The full
text of the statement is reproduced below.‘Miyah poetry’ began in 2016 as a
series of poems opposing the use of the word ‘Miyah’ as a slang word for Assamese
Muslims of Bengal-origin. Today, Miyah poetry is an umbrella term for poems by
many, mostly young poets, from within and even outside Bengal-origin Assamese
Muslim community. These poems include stories of humiliation and
discrimination, love poems, poems spreading social awareness, etc.The current
debate over Miyah poetry is baseless because poems written three years ago are
now being dissected and a few lines of two poems are being cherry-picked and
taken out of context. This wilful misreading of cherry-picked lines of these
two poems is malicious and malafide. One of the baseless allegations against
Miyah poetry is that these poems are being used to depict the whole of Assamese
society as xenophobic. Fact is, not a single Miyah poem uses the word
‘xenophobic’, ‘xenophobia’ or any variation of the word. thewire

Now, temple comes up on piece of land proposed
for graveyard in Agra: TOI
Agra: Days after the gram sabha in Agra’s Chah
Pokhar village offered a piece of barren land that could be used by Muslims
there who have been burying the dead in and around their houses for want of
proper space, a “temple” has suddenly come up on the plot of land that was
proposed for a graveyard. Now, days after a land was proposed, some local
residents have installed an idol of ‘hanuman’ on a brick platform, saying the
land falls on an important road and people will fear to walk through or along
the patch at night. Village head Sundar Singh told TOI, “I have already offered
to give land for the graveyard. But some people are adamant on not allowing it.
Now, I cannot do anything about it. I have informed the administration.” Hakim
Singh, who owns a farm next to the proposed 1500-sq mt plot, said, “Till now,
things are under control. But if this situation persists, the peaceful
atmosphere of the village will be spoiled and there will be no communal
harmony. We will not allow the burial ground to come up here.” No one will be
able to come here during night after the graveyard comes up, he said.

UK envoy said Trump left Iran nuclear deal to
spite Obama: Report
UK's former ambassador to Washington said US
President Donald Trump seemed to be pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal for
"personality reasons", as it was signed by his predecessor, Barack
Obama, according to a British newspaper citing leaked documents. The report by
the Mail on Sunday came days after Kim Darroch was reported to have sent
diplomatic cables describing the Trump administration as "inept",
prompting US president to claim the ambassador was a "pompous fool"
whom he would no longer deal with.Darroch has since resigned, saying it was now
"impossible" to do his job."The administration is set upon an
act of diplomatic vandalism, seemingly for ideological and personality reasons
- it was Obama's deal,"Darroch wrote in a diplomatic cable in May 2018,
the Mail on Sunday reported, as it published the second batch of leaked
documents. According to the cables, in May 2018, Boris Johnson, the British
foreign secretary at the time, went to Washington to try to persuade Trump not
to abandon the Iran deal.Afterwards, Darroch reportedly indicated there were
divisions in Trump's team over the decision, and criticised the White House for
not having a long-term strategy."They can't articulate any 'day-after'
strategy; and contacts with the State Department this morning suggest no sort
of plan for reaching out to partners and allies, whether in Europe or the
region," he wrote. He reported back that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo,
during his talks with Johnson, "did some subtle distancing by talking throughout
about 'the president's decision'".The newspaper reported that, according
to Darroch, Pompeo also hinted that he had tried but failed to "sell"
a revised text to Trump. aljazeera
