INDIA: AIMPLB & BABRI ISSUE
AIMPLB moots action against member over
suggestion to shift Babri Masjid, says talaq bill is against Constitution
Hyderabad:All India Muslim Personal Law Board
(AIMPLB) on Saturday reiterated its opposition to the ‘Centre’s attempts to
interfere in the personal law matters of the Muslims’ by making a legislation
on triple talaq. AIMPLB general secretary Moulana Wali Rehmani, in his report
at 26th plenary of the board, expressed concern over the threat to the personal
law with the triple talaq legislation being enacted by the Central govt. “It is
against the fundamental rights guaranteed in the Indian Constitution and also
against the previous court verdicts,” he said. Appreciating the stand taken by
the Opposition parties in Rajya Sabha, where the bill has stalled, Rehmani
requested the personal law board to suggest and guide the Muslims in this
regard. He also asked the plenary to evolve a strategy to stop the Centre from
passing the bill. The Board took serious note of the suggestion made by Moulana
Sayyed Salman Hussaini Nadvi, one of the executive committee members, that the
Babri Masjid be shifted from the existing disputed site in Ayodhya to another
place, where another magnificent mosque and a university could be built. While
Moulani Nadvi skipped the plenary meeting on the second day, the Board
constituted a 4-member committee with senior clerics to look into his comments
and suggest a disciplinary action against him. Referring to the controversy,
Rehamni, without naming anybody, said misleading rumours were being circulated
by some elements to misguide the Muslims on Babri Masjid issue with regard to
out of the court settlement. He reiterated that the stand taken by the Board in
the past that a mosque would always be a mosque. “That does not mean we are not
against negotiations, but they should be based on fair justice and equal
honour,” he said.Rehmani explained in detail the legal battle being waged by
the Board on the contentious Babri Masjid issue in the Supreme Court. He said
the court had expressed view that the case was related to the title of the land
and did not relate to the matter of faith or belief. He said the related
documents had already been submitted to the court and some other documents
which were yet to be translated would be submitted as per the court directions.Declaring
the Hyderabad plenary as historic, he said that it was being held at a very
crucial juncture when the Muslim community was confronting with many issues
with the Govt of the day adopting a bias
attitude. On the issue of social reforms, Rehmani said a lot of awareness was
being created among the Muslims with a movement called
“Tahaffuz-e-shariyat-wo-Ishalahai-Mashhira” (Protection of Shariya Law,
Understanding Shariya law and social reforms). Moulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi,
President AIMPLB, presided over the plenary session, which was attended by over
500 delegates. IANS reports that AIMPLB member SQR Ilyas said that the Board
President would take action after a report is submitted to him by the
disciplinary committee.Talking to reporters, Nadvi alleged that two executive
members Zafar Yab Jeelani and Ilyas humiliated him.Ilyas denied the allegation.
"The meeting was held in a democratic manner. There was a unanimous
feeling that Salman Nadvi should not have made the offer that is against the
known stand of the board," he said.Ilyas, who is convenor of the Babri
Masjid committee of the board, said Nadvi should have raised any issue in the
AIMPLB meeting before speaking publicly. He said Nadvi's action had damaged the
board's reputation at a time when it is holding a crucial meeting in Hyderabad
to discuss various important issues.HT /IANS

accordance with the two- state solution along the lines of 1967 and
internationally legitimate resolutions so that both Palestine and Israel can
co-exist in peace and security, provided that East Jerusalem is the capital of
the state of Palestine.Abbas said the formation of a multi-lateral mechanism
that is produced by an international peace convention is the most ideal way to
broker negotiations with Israel, which is India’s strategic partner and among
its top arms suppliers.“We rely on India’s role as an international voice of
great standing and weigh through its historical role in the Non-Aligned
Movement and in all international forum and its increasingly growing power on

Palestine has stood the test of time. The people of Palestine have shown
remarkable courage in the face of several challenges. India will always support
Palestine’s development journey,” Modi said, adding that India is hopeful of
peace and stability in the region. PM Modi said India hopes for Palestine to
soon become a sovereign and independent country in a peaceful environment through
dialogue.“We hope for peace and stability in Palestine, we believe a permanent
solution is possible with dialogue. Only diplomacy and farsightedness can set
free from violence and baggage of the past. We know it is not easy but we need
to keep trying as a lot is at stake,” Modi said. The two sides signed agreements
worth $50 million. The agreement includes setting up of a super speciality
hospital worth $30 million in Beit Sahur and construction of a centre for
empowering women worth $5 million.Three agreements in the education sector

to greet Modi. Modi flew in a Jordanian army helicopter straight from Amman to
Ramallah, where he was received by his Palestinian counterpart Rami Hamdallah. Modi’s
chopper was escorted by choppers from Israel Air Force.“This is a historic
visit that will lead to stronger bilateral cooperation,” Modi said shortly
after landing.Soon after his arrival, Modi visited the Mausoleum of Yasser
Arafat in Ramallah and laid a wreath at the grave of the iconic Palestinian

Israelis accept India’s strategic need to
maintain ties with Palestine: Israeli Analysts
Israeli analysts generally accept India’s
strategic need to demonstrate its traditional support for Palestine with some
seeing PM Narendra Modi’s trip to Ramallah as a “comfort prize” for
Palestinians amid growing Indo-Israel ties.“I believe that the Palestinians
understand that this visit is a comfort prize after Israel and India have grown
closer dramatically in the last few years,” Lior Weintraub, ex-Israeli
spokesperson in New Delhi and Washington, said. said.India is now prioritising
the bilateral relationship with Israel that has a strategic aspect, cultural
aspect and economic aspect, over allowing the impasse in the Israeli-
Palestinian channel to dictate how India is going to act vis- Ã -vis some vital
national interest that is has, the former diplomat further added.Israelis are
generally accepting of India’s strategic need to demonstrate its traditional
support for the Palestinians with some seeing PM Narendra Modi’s trip to
Palestine as a “comfort prize” for intensifying Indo- Israel ties while others
viewing it as a move to safeguard national interest.PTI

New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Friday asked
the Allahabad High Court and the Waqf mosque on its premises, which has been
ordered to be removed, to explore the possibility of a “settlement”.Hearing a
petition filed by Waqf Masjid challenging the Nov. 8, 2017, order of the High
Court which gave it three months to move out, a 3-judge bench of CJI Dipak
Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud ordered “list the matter on

decades.During the brief hearing, Justice Chandrachud said there were several
tracts of land beside the High Court and some part of this could be considered
for relocating the mosque. CJI, too, seemed to favour a relocation.Acting on a
PIL,HC had directed that the “Waqf, shall handover vacant and peaceful
possession of the site in dispute to respondent no.1-High Court, within a
period of three months…” from the date of the judgment.indianexpress

People voted you to power for Ram Mandir
construction, not for triple talaq: VHP’s Togadia to Modi
In a brazen attack unleashed by the VHP
international working president, against PM Narendra Modi and his BJP Govt , Pravin
Togadia on Friday stated that the people of the nation voted for him so that
they can get Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Criticising PM Modi over the triple talaq
bill, VHP’s Togadia stated that he was not brought into power for making laws
on the practice of triple talaq by the Muslim community. Asking the Govt to push the construction of Ram Mandir, Togadia
said that the current Govt should make a
law for construction of the temple in Ayodhya. He said, “People have voted you
to power not for making laws on triple talaq, but for the construction of Ram
Mandir in Ayodhya”. The following attack on PM Modi and his Govt came in while Togadia was on a two-day tour of
Aurangabad and Parbhani. While addressing the media on Friday, Togadia said that
a law should be passed for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. “A law should be passed for the construction
of Ram temple so that it is built soon. Whether to make a law on triple talaq
or not is up to the Govt , but they should make a law for Ram temple,” he
added. Expressing their confidence in the judiciary, the VHP leader said, “We
have faith in the judiciary, but since the temple has not been built, a law
should be passed in this regard so that it can be constructed without the

SP, BSP demand probe into Kasganj violence
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party and the BSP demanded
a judicial probe into the 26 Jan.Kasganj incident in Uttar Pradesh in which one
person died. Speaking on the admissibility notice on the Kasganj incident in
the Vidhan Sabha, leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary said the incident
was a deliberate and pre-planned one. He demanded an impartial inquiry by a
sitting High Court judge and compensation to those whose shops were burnt in
the communal flare-up. He also demanded that more compensation be given to the
family members of the youth who was killed.Chaudhary said the incident was
aimed at creating communal disharmony and regretted that differences have
reached this stage between 2 communities, whose members had once laid down
their lives for the independence of the country. Recounting the sequence of
events which led to the flare-up, SP leader said some 100 to 125 motorcycles,
with 2 to 3 youths on each took out a tiranga yatra. They passed through a
locality where some Muslims had assembled for the hoisting of the national
flag. They were asked to remove their chairs by the youth. What followed was an
altercation which later escalated into a communal flare-up leading to the death
of one youth. Chaudhary said he had two CDs which indicated that the whole
incident was a pre-meditated one. He wondered which direction the state was
going.thestatesman
Muzaffarnagar Riots: District Authorities
Oppose Withdrawal of Cases Against BJP Leaders
Muzaffarnagar: District authorities are not in
favour of withdrawal of cases, mostly against political leaders, related to the
Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013 in which over 60 people were killed and over 40,000
rendered homeless, official sources said here on Friday. The district
authorities, in response to two letters from the UP Dept of Justice, have
advocated against the withdrawal of 10 such cases as the court has already
taken cognisance against the accused after charge sheets were filed by the
police and the SIT probing the riots cases, the sources said. Some of the cases

1,611 Days After Muzaffarnagar Riots, Jats Say
'Allahu Akbar' and Muslims Chant 'Har Har Mahadev':news18
Muzaffarnagar: After UP Assembly elections
last year, Vipin Singh Balyan from Kutba village in western UP’s Muzaffarnagar
took a radical decision. 53 Jat youths from his village were implicated in 9
separate cases of violence, including murder, in 2013, when communal riots
ripped through Muzaffarnagar. He would go to Muslim victims and beg forgiveness
on behalf of Jats. “I decided to go to the house of one Akhtar Hassan, who had
great standing among Kutba’s Muslims. I told him I was there to ask for
forgiveness. The first time I went there, the Muslims gathered around and
started abusing me for what Jats had done to their families. I neither reacted
nor tried to defend myself. I left my Jat ego at the door and listened to
everything they had to say,” says Balyan. The first meeting with Akhtar was a
failure. Balyan went again, only to be turned down once more. When the third
visit, too, yielded no possibility of a “settlement”, Balyan says he was
beginning to lose hope. But then, something unexpected happened. “After the
third meeting,I went home dejected. That very evening, Akhtar called me. He
said that a Muslim girl from Kutba was being bothered by local Muslim lads from
Bara Basti. He sought help from Jats to put pressure on the police to arrest
those miscreants. As their former landlords, Jats thought it was their duty to
help a daughter of Kutba, even if she was Muslim. We surrounded the police
station and the cops were forced to arrest the accused.”That incident helped
break the ice and gave Balyan and company the chance to move forward with their
“peace process”. But it was important to first win back the Muslims’ trust. The
culprits of Kutba were Jats, but the Jats of Kakra village had lost their sons
at the hands of Muslim rioters from nearby Pur Balyan village. So the Jats of
Kutba took a decision. They would first get cases against Muslims withdrawn.
Chaudhary Shakir Ali is the former pradhan of Pur Balyan village. On Sept.7,
2013, a group of Jats were passing through the mosque in Pur Balyan when they
were killed by a Muslim mob. news18

Despite a possible terror threat, security

suspected JeM militants on Saturday morning. 2 jawans, including a junior

around the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. Guru was hanged on Feb. 9, 2013
while JKLF founder Maqbool Bhat was hanged in Tihar jail on Feb.11, 1984. While
security agencies expected an attack in Kashmir Valley, militants carried out
the strike in Jammu. On Thursday, Vaid had said that security forces are taking
necessary precautions in view of the alert in the Valley. “We are always on
alert. But as you know, February 9 and 11 are important days in Kashmir, so we
are taking all precautions,” Vaid had said.A senior police officer had told The
Indian Express that there was an ‘assessment’ by multiple agencies on the
possible strike by the terror group around Guru’s anniversary. “JeM was active
for a few years after it was set up by Masood Azhar in 2000 when he was

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi’s assertion in Lok Sabha that if
Sardar Patel’s line of thinking were allowed, there would be no issue on

Major Israeli air raids hit 'Iranian targets'
in Syria
Israel struck a dozen Syrian and Iranian
targets inside Syria on Saturday in "large-scale" raids after an
Israeli fighter jet crashed under fire from Syrian air defences in a severe
increase in tensions, the military said.Israel's raids came after it
intercepted what it said was an Iranian drone entering its airspace from Syria,
which it labelled an "attack."It marked the first time Israel
publicly acknowledged attacking what it identified as Iranian targets in Syria
since the war began. In response, Iran denounced Israeli "lies" and
said Syria had the right to self-defence in response to Israeli strikes.Separately,
Iran issued a joint statement alongside the other main allies of the Syrian
regime -- Russia and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah -- denying the
allegations regarding the drone. Russian foreign ministry called for
"restraint" from all parties. sraeli military spokesman Jonathan
Conricus warned that Syria and Iran were "playing with fire," but

fighters move to Syria's Idlib, clash with factions, sources say:Reuters
Beirut; Islamic State fighters battled Syrian
insurgents in the northwestern province of Idlib on Friday, a monitoring group
and a rebel commander said, accusing pro-Govt forces of opening a corridor for the jihadists
to reach the region.Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Govt forces had allowed Islamic State fighters to
leave a besieged pocket of territory at the intersection of Aleppo, Idlib and
Hama provinces, and then go to southern Idlib.A military news outlet run by
Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is fighting on the side of the Syrian Govt ,
reported gains by the army and its allies against Islamic State in that pocket,
but made no mention of the jihadists being allowed to leave.A commander in the
alliance fighting alongside Syria’s army said the Islamic State militants left
the enclave. “The pocket is finished. A crossing was opened till they exited,
and then it was closed,” the commander said.

Warning of humanitarian ‘disaster’ in Eastern
Ghouta
An international aid body has warned of a
“humanitarian disaster” in Eastern Ghouta caused by the major bombing campaign
by the Syrian Govt that has impeded
essential relief operations. Eastern Ghouta is currently under the control of
opposition factions.CARE International said that heavy air strikes have killed
more than 220 civilians in four days and made it difficult for aid workers to
help nearly 400,000 people trapped in the area. “Our partners in Ghouta face
difficulty in moving; how can they reach the most vulnerable people?” said
Joelle Bassoul, the organisation’s director of public relations for Syria. A
social centre supported by CARE in Douma was among the buildings which were
bombed, forcing those inside to hide underground. Over 4,000 families live in basements
and air raid shelters in Eastern Ghouta, according to Save the Children. The
enclave east of the capital is supposed to be one of four zones for “easing
tension” announced last year in an effort to reduce the level of violence.
However, the regime has intensified its bombardment of Eastern Ghouta, where
its forces are carrying out another major operation in Idlib province in the
north-west, a second area included in the agreement to reduce
tension.middleeastmonitor
