UP Govt biased against Muslims:
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind over Kasganj violence
New Delhi: The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on
Saturday accused the Uttar Pradesh Govt of bias against the minority
communities after many Muslim youths were arrested in a case of violence in the
BJP-ruled state's Kasganj in which one person was killed.JIH Secretary General
Muhammad Salim Engineer demanded a judicial probe into the incident, saying the
Uttar Pradesh Police had let off "the real culprit"."The law
enforcement agencies in Kasganj are having a very biased attitude against the
minorities which is reflected in the substantially high number of arrest of
youths from the Muslim community," he told reporters here."The CrPC
(Code of Criminal Procedure) sections invoked against the arrested Muslim
youths on charges of inciting and committing violence in Kasganj are also very
strict while the real culprits have been let off or charged under very mild
CrPC sections so that they can be bailed out easily."The JIH also
questioned the Yogi Adityanath Govt for
allowing a 'Tiranga rally' on January 26 -- which led to the violence -- saying
it was clear that the people behind the rally had communal agenda "to
vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of the city and create communal strife".A
delegation led by JIH visited Kasganj recently to assess the situation and get
first-hand information from those affected by the violence and arson, he added.IANS

Kasganj riots: New CCTV footage shows Muslims
were preparing for Republic Day when they were attacked
A new CCTV video from Kasganj has surfaced
giving credence to local Muslims’ claims that they were attacked unprovoked as
they began to celebrate Republic Day by hoisting India’s national flag on 26
January. In the video, the local Muslims including some wearing Islamic
skullcaps, are seen preparing for the 26 January function by installing a
flagpole while also decorating the neighbourhood with tricolour ballons. At
8.56 AM, the local residents are seen readying themselves for the Republic Day
function. However, at 9.40 AM, they are seen rushing towards a lane anxiously.
Moments later, some youth are seen emerging out of the same lane causing ruckus
by throwing chairs, placed there for the Republic Day celebration. In the
immediate aftermath of Kasganj communal violence that killed one youth,
attempts were made by a selected few journalists including Rohit Sardana and
Sweta Singh of Aaj Tak, to lay the blame on local Muslims by portraying them as
anti-Indians. Although, they were spectacularly exposed by fellow journalists, new
CCTV video will cause even more embarrassment to Hindutva rumour-mongers
masquerading as journalists in India. When the need of the hour was to report
responsibly and prevent more bloodshed and loss of human lives, some usual
suspects in the Indian media made desperate attempts to fuel tension. India

‘Bhagwa’ killed Chandan Gupta in Kasganj,
writes bureaucrat Ashutosh Sharma
Even though a DM in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly
district had to delete his Facebook post where he had asked why raising
anti-Pakistan slogans in Muslim-dominated areas was becoming a
"trend" for some people, a bureaucrat posted at Saharanpur has now
taken to the Facebook and asserted that Bhagwa (saffron flag) killed Chandan
Gupta.Chandan, a 22-year-old college student, was killed in communal clashes
that broke out in the western Uttar Pradesh town of Kasganj after some
anti-social elements “threw stones and opened fire” during an unauthorised bike
rally taken out to celebrate Republic Day.“So this is what Kasganj Tiranga
Yatra was all about. There is nothing new to it. On Ambedkar Jayanti, a similar
rally was carried out in Saharanpur’s Sadak Dudhli village. Ambedkar was
missing from that rally or in other words, he got eclipsed by the Bhagwa. The
same thing happened in Kasganj. Tricolour (national flag) was missing and
saffron (flag of RSS) was all over the rally. The boy who got killed was not
murdered by the people belonging to second or the third community. He was
killed by the Bhagwa itself from behind the veil of saffron, white and green,”
posted deputy director Statistics Department Saharanpur, Rashme Varun on
Facebook.Without referring to Kasganj, DM Raghvendra Vikkram Singh had
signalled to a similar incident taking place in Bareilly last year when
violence broke out during a Kanwar Yatra. “A strange trend has started of late.
Take processions forcibly into Muslim mohallas and shout Pakistan murdabad.
(Why so? Are these people Pakistanis?),” wrote Raghvendra, setting off a fierce
debate on social media as it came a few days after the violence in
Kasganj.Later, he lamented the negative reactions to his post, clarifying that
he was only referring to the law and order problem that had arisen in Bareilly:
“I had hoped there will be an academic discussion but unfortunately it had
taken a different turn. Extremely sad (sic).”The Uttar Pradesh Govt has been under fire over the Kasganj clashes.
Governor Ram Naik described the violence a "blot" on the state
whereas the opposition parties have persistently been targeting Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath over a spurt in hate crimes against Muslims. Nationalheraldindia

In a shocking revelation, it was found that

Gupta’s father was fake. This was revealed by the senior-most police official
of the communally sensitive Kasganj.Janta ka reporter has quoted the
Superintendent of Police in Kasganj, Piyush Srivastava as saying, “I want to

channel carried a news without taking the official version from us. I would

Bareilly kanwar violence: Police seek govt nod

Lucknow:The Bareilly police has written to the

involvement in a communal clash following a kanwar yatra in Muslim-dominated

Attack on J&K students in Haryana: Accused
assaulted 5 other men leaving same mosque, says police
Mahendragarh:A day after 2 students from J&K
were assaulted in Mahendragarh, Haryana, police said the six accused had, the
same day, assaulted five Muslim men as they walked out of a mosque after their
Friday prayers.According to Mahendragarh Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep,
the Muslim men were the “original targets” of the attackers and the two
students had been assaulted “mistakenly”.On Saturday, police said they had
registered two separate FIRs against the six accused: one for allegedly
assaulting Aftab Ahmad and Amjad Ali, the two students from J&K who studied
at Central University of Haryana in Mahendragarh, and the other for allegedly
assaulting five Muslim labourers — Sadik, Sharik, Intazar, Rehman and Aslam —
from Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts in UP. Two of the accused were arrested
on Saturday.“When we came out of the mosque, a group of 10 men came on five
bikes and asked us to remove our skull caps. They also asked two others, who
had their skull caps in their pockets, to take them out. When we refused to do
as they said, they threatened us. They later followed us and assaulted us near
the factory where we work,” Sadik told The Sunday Express. Sadik and the others
have been working in Mahendergarh for five months. On Friday, the two students,
both residents of Rajouri in Jammu, had alleged that a group of at least 10
people had started following them soon after they came out of the same mosque
in Mahendragarh. The J&K Govt had
demanded strong action against the accused, with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti
saying she was “shocked and disturbed” by the incident.Police said the accused
were involved in a fight at three different locations. “The first scuffle took
place at Angoori Devi dharamshala. Two of the accused were on a bike, which
grazed past the five Muslim men who were walking on the congested road outside
the mosque. That led to a scuffle. The accused told us that these students from
J&K were present at the spot, though they were not involved in the scuffle.
After this, the two accused called four more men and this group of six, they
claim, went in search of these Muslim men. At Masani Chowk, they saw these two
Kashmiri students and assumed they were part of the same group and beat them
up. Then they went ahead, saw the five Muslim men near Railway Road and beat
them up. So these are two different incidents, involving the same accused,”
Kamaldeep said, adding that the accused are from neighbouring villages. “One of
them is a BSc student in a local college. Two others, who are in their
twenties, are self-employed,” he said. The students, however, claimed that
police were “distorting the facts” and that the two incidents are not
connected.“I don’t know who these men were. When we were standing near the
chowk, they first snatched my helmet and started assaulting us. We had not seen
these men near the dharamshala, as police have been claiming. If we had
witnessed a scuffle there, we would have definitely noticed these men. We have
no clue about the assault on the 5 other Muslim men. We have no connection with
that incident. Both are separate incidents,” Aftab Ahmad, one of the two
Kashmiri students, told the SP and DM who visited the university on
Saturday. The labourers also said they had not seen any Kashmiri students when
the scuffle took place outside the mosque and later when they were assaulted.
“These students were not present when they told us to remove our skull cap or
when we where assaulted later. These are two separate incidents,” Sadik said.

Please Don’t Communalise My Son’s Murder:
Ankit’s Father to Press, Politicians
New Delhi: Father of Ankit Saxena, the youth
allegedly killed by father of his female Muslim friend, is very upset with the
way the media has projected the issue. Ankit’s father Yashpal has appealed to
media and politicians not to politicize and communalise the incident.“I had one
son. If I get justice, it’s good. If not, even then I don’t have hatred against
any community. I have no such (communal) thinking. I am unable to understand
why the media is showing this issue in that way,” Yashpal told Delhi BJP
president Manoj Tiwari who had come to meet him Saturday evening.“They (media
persons) come and talk to me so softly and lovingly but show something else on
TV. My relatives, neighbors come and tell me about what is being shown on TV
channels. They are using words like ‘premi’, ‘Muslim’, ‘Mazhab’ and twisting
facts. All are making just stories,” Ankit’s father is seen speaking in a video
captured on mobile. As per media reports, Ankit, a photographer by profession,
and second-year college student Shahzadi, had developed friendship when their
families were living in the same neighborhood in a west Delhi area. It is said
they were about to marry. But girl’s family was against this relationship and
had warned the youth. On Thursday evening, when the girl did not return home,
her family got suspicious that she might have been kidnapped by the youth.
Around 9PM, they confronted him on the street and during the scuffle that
followed, he was allegedly stabbed by the girl’s father. The local police have
arrested girl’s father, mother, uncle and minor brother. In 2-minute video, a
young relative of Yashpal also strongly condemned the way media is dramatizing
the whole incident.“Media is taking it as a joke. They are showing him (Ankit)
as one going on scooter and from behind a Muslim stabbing him. What the hell is
it? Big headlines are flashing like ‘Horror Murder in Delhi,’” says the
relative who addresses Yashpal as ‘Mausa’ (mother’s sister’s husband).Rebutting
a fake point, father said: “Someone said that girl’s mother had called him
(Ankit). All this is false and fake.”The grieved family told people, while BJP
president Tiwari was sitting there, not to come just for photo-op. caravandaily
Model nikahnama to be modified to deter
Muslims from giving triple talaq: AIMPLB
Lucknow:To deter the practice of triple talaq,
the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is all set to introduce a new
provision in its model nikahnama in which the man has to commit that he will
not give triple talaq (instant divorce), a spokesman of the Board said in
Lucknow.AIMPLB has maintained that it against the practice of triple talaq, but
it has opposed the proposed legislation saying it is an interference in Muslim
personal law. The Board has, however, faced criticism for failing to bring
reforms in personal laws."Yes... we are making a provision in the model
nikahnama (Islamic marriage contract) in which there will be a column - I will
not give triple talaq. Once during nikah (marriage), this column is ticked, one
will not be able to give triple talaq," AIMPLB spokesman Maulana
Khalil-ur-Rehman Sajjad Nomani told PTI here.He said that a detailed discussion
on the matter will be held at AIMPLB meeting in Hyderabad from Feb.9.Besides
other social issues, the two-day annual general meeting of the Board is likely
to deliberate on developments in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case. The
Board is also likely to finalise its roadmap for the coming year. "In this
meeting, the campaign being run against social evils such as triple talaq and
dowry will be reviewed. The AIMPLB feels that without social awareness, no
system in the country can succeed."The Board is running a big campaign in
the country. The messengers of the Board will reach every madrassa and mosque
and tell people to stay away from social evils like dowry and triple
talaq," he said.A progress report will also be sought on the work done and
based on this, a plan for the next year will be prepared, he said."Since
the cases of triple talaq happen generally among the less educated, the Board
will work hard in rural areas. Students and teachers of madrassas will be
included as messengers."Their main job will be to spread the message about
evils of dowry and triple talaq. If the need for divorce arises, then one
should first contact and consult a cleric and stay away from triple
talaq," Nomani said. The spokesperson said that this campaign had gained
momentum in the past one year.Nomani said the board was also using various
social media tools in this regard."The AIMPLB is strictly against triple
talaq, but in some circumstances, triple talaq has been recognised. In many
cases, the women themselves seek triple talaq."People, who are not
involved with the (Muslim) society perceive that all the cases of triple talaq
are committed by men. This is completely wrong," Nomani said.PTI

cautioned that Indian banks would eventually pass into foreign hands if there
is no review of current policies. The shareholding of foreign entities in the
large private banks in India is over 70% while in the public sector banks, Govt

foreigners own majority of the rest of the stake, Reddy said.“We do not have

by foreigners and rest by Indians. I repeat, least by Indians,” he said.“The
share of public sector banking is, and will, come down and under the current
policy, that space will be occupied irrevocably by foreigner-owned banks unless
there is a policy change,” Reddy said, delivering a lecture at the
Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad. The current policy of
ownership and governance in banking needs to be reviewed urgently to correct
the outdated and distorted policies, and this should be done before the banking
system passes on to foreign owners, he said.PTI

New Delhi: Just like the 12-digit Aadhaar
number for every Indian, the Narendra Modi Govt is set to assign each of the country’s
milk-producing cows a cheap, unique identity card or UID, first proposed in
2015.Deliverable targets in this year’s Union budget show Rs 50 crore for the
project to cover 40 million cattle.A dairy department official, requesting
anonymity, said the agriculture ministry, which will implement the programme,
has already acquired the UID technology that comes with a cheap, tamper-proof
polyurethane tag containing the cow’s biological details such as breed, age,
sex, height and special body marks. Each card will cost between Rs 8 and Rs
10.Named Pashu Sanjivini, the animal UID scheme is part of a larger programme
for the dairy and fisheries sectors. These sectors are crucial if officials are
to get serious on doubling farmers’ incomes by 2022, a target set by the Govt .
Economists say this is nearly impossible from cultivation alone because a
majority of Indian farmers can’t achieve economy of scale as they work on small

security of his family members also.“If I have to die, I will die but before
that I will speak the truth. People died (killed) even when they had not
uttered a single word. It is better to speak and die rather than dying without
speaking,” he said.He said people in Nagpur would silence every voice that raises
question about Loya’s death. When NH asked him which people in Nagpur, he said
everyone knows whose headquarters is in Nagpur.“I received several threatening
calls over the phone,” he complained, while adding that his lawyer-activist
friend Satish Uike is also not safe. Uike received threats in the past and on
June 8, 2016, iron material weighing 5,000 kilos fell on his office roof.
Uike’s life was saved by a whisker, says Lolage, adding that Uike had stepped
out of the office just minutes earlier. After the incident, a complaint was
filed by Uike at Nagpur but no FIR or investigation has been conducted so far.

placed sources, the Pakistani nationals were arrested at different points of

keen to return to their country and lead a normal life, but Pakistan is refusing
to accept them as its citizens in order to "hide its anti-India terror

Maldives army seals off parliament, arrests
MPs: aljazeera
Security forces in the Maldives have sealed
off the country's parliament and arrested two opposition legislators amid a
deepening crisis over President Abdulla Yameen's refusal to free jailed
politicians.Soldiers in riot gear surrounded the parliament building in Male on
Sunday soon after the opposition petitioned the parliament to remove the island
nation's attorney general and its chief prosecutor. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the
parliamentary leader of the opposition, accused the pair of breaking the law by
failing to act on a Supreme Court verdict overturning "terrorism"
convictions against nine dissidents, including exiled former President Mohamed
Nasheed. The top court's ruling has plunged the Maldives into fresh political
turmoil and dealt a major blow to Yameen, who is accused of corruption, misrule
and rights abuses. He denies the allegations. The verdict also gave the
opposition a majority in 85-member parliament as it reinstated 12 members of
parliament who were stripped of their seats last year. But 2 of the 12 were
arrested at the airport on Sunday, shortly after they returned to the Maldives
after months in exile.

Israel ‘legalises’ West Bank outpost after
settler killed
Israel granted legal status on Sunday to a
previously unauthorized outpost in the occupied West Bank in response to a
Palestinian shooting attack last month that killed one of its residents. Israeli
PM Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision to retroactively authorize the
50-family outpost of Havat Gilad was meant to “allow the continuation of normal
life there.”A Palestinian teenager was killed last night during an Israeli
military raid in Burqin for suspects involved in the shooting. Israeli forces
in the adjacent city of Jenin last month shot and killed a Palestinian gunman
whom they suspected of involvement in the settler’s shooting. Most countries
deem Israeli settlements in the West Bank, land Israel captured in a 1967 war
that Palestinians want for a future state, to be illegal. Israel disputes
this. The decision was approved unanimously by Israel’s cabinet.Palestinian
officials condemned the move.MEMO

Russia has launched a series of air attacks in
the area where one of its fighter jets was shot down by Syrian rebels on
Saturday, leaving dozens of fighters and civilians dead, according to Syrian
activists and Russian officials. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR),
a UK-based monitor of Syria's civil war, said at least 68 attacks hit Idlib
province in the early hours of Sunday morning, following about 35 attacks on
Saturday. It said at least five people had been killed and thousands of
civilians had fled the area to avoid getting caught up in the bombardment. The
White Helmets, an opposition rescue group, reported 21 civilian deaths in
villages surrounding the site of the downed Sukhoi 25 jet, but it was unclear
whether its toll included those on the SOHR tally. The pilot of the Sukhoi was
killed after being ejected from the aircraft by rebel fighters, including
members of the Hay'et Tahrir al-Sham group, commonly known as Tahrir al-Sham.
The group is spearheaded by the former al-Nusra Front, which used to be

invade Qatar at the beginning of a diplomatic crisis that erupted in June,
according to Qatar's defence minister. In an interview with the Washington Post
on Friday, Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah said his Gulf neighbours have
"tried everything" to destabilise the country, but their intentions
to invade were "[defused]" by Qatar."They have intentions to
intervene militarily," said al-Attiyah. When asked to confirm whether he
thought such a threat still existed today, he responded: "We have
[defused] this intention. But at the beginning of the crisis, they had this

After extracting billions from ‘corruption’
cases, Saudis ‘increase royal family allowances by 50%’
Saudi Arabia has raised some royal family
allowances after extracting billions of dollars from princes, businessmen and
officials held on corruption charges, apparently reliable sources have told
Bloomberg. Two of the sources claimed that the increase amounts to 50 per cent,
with the Govt no longer paying
electricity and water bills for members of the ruling family. A Saudi Govt official denied the claims. Dozens of the
country’s richest men, including billionaire Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal, were
among those held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh as part of a massive
crackdown on corruption in early November, before settlements were made with
them under which the state obtained over $100 billion. middleeastmonitor
Afghanistan: Ghani open to talks with armed
groups
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/02/afghanistan-ghani-open-talks-armed-groups-180203170526617.html
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said his Govt
is open to peace talks with armed groups
who accept peace but said the door was closed to those who cause tragedies like
recent attacks in the capital, Kabul. Two attacks in Kabul that left scores of
civilians dead were claimed by Taliban. An attack on the Inter-Continental Hotel
in Kabul on January 20 and a massive car bombing on a crowded city street a
week later have stoked public anger and stepped up pressure on Ghani's
Western-backed Govt to improve
security. The two attack killed more than 130 people. The recent attacks have
raised fresh doubt about long-running efforts to initiate talks with the armed
fighters. The president's office said on Tuesday the fighters had crossed a
"red line" and peace would have to be won on the battlefield. But
Ghani raised the possibility of reconciliation with some factions of Taliban in
a speech in Kabul."Those who are responsible for this tragedy and do not
want peace, the door of peace is closed to them," Ghani said. aljazeera

Yemen Islah party suspends membership of Nobel
laureate Karman
Yemeni Nobel Prize winner Tawakkol Karman was
suspended from the Islah party allied with President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi
after she accused the Saudi-led coalition that backs him in the country’s civil
war of acting as occupiers.Karman won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for her role
in Arab Spring protests that ousted authoritarian President Ali Abdullah. More
recently she has ramped up public criticism of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab
Emirates, accusing them of backing a campaign to divide Yemen by supporting
southern separatists against the internationally recognised Govt .Speaking at
the Warwick Economics Summit in London over the weekend, Karman said Saudi
Arabia and the UAE were driven by a “reckless adventurism” when they intervened
in Yemen in 2015 after Iran-aligned Houthi forces drove Hadi into exile. In an
earlier Twitter message, she wrote:"Saudi Arabia and UAE took advantage of
the (Houthi) militia coup in Sanaa to launch a very ugly occupation and an
uglier influence in Yemen."The Islah party, regarded as a branch of the
Muslim Brotherhood, which is viewed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE as a terrorist
organisation, tried to distance itself from Karman and order her suspended from
its ranks.“Tawakkol Karman’s statements do not represent the Islah party and
its policies, and are not in line with the party’s positions,” a statement
posted on Islah’s website said.“Therefore, the general secretary has decided to
freeze her membership according to party’s status.”Karman, who left Yemen after
Houthi militia seized the capital Sanaa in a series of military advances that
began in late 2014, responded on her Twitter account by describing Islah
leaders as “prisoners and slaves” of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.Tensions between
Islah and southern separatists have been rising since Arab countries, including
Saudi Arabia and UAE, announced a boycott of Qatar in June last year over
allegations that Doha backs militants. Qatar denies the charges. middleeastmonitor

Boycott election, Coalition tells Egyptians as
candidates withdraw or are blocked
In the absence of any strong opposition
candidate, the upcoming presidential election in Egypt seems closer to being a
formality for incumbent Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. This feeling is strengthened by
the fact that prominent figures and politicians are calling for a boycott of
the election. Predictably, the Govt accuses them of trying to overthrow the
regime.Leaders of the Civil Democratic Movement have raised international
concerns after calling on Egyptians to boycott the elections scheduled for the
end of next month. The opposition coalition described the election as
“absurd”.The Movement was founded last December by eight political parties and
about 150 political figures, including former presidential candidates Hamdeen
Sabahi and Khaled Ali. Prominent opposition figure George Isaac is also
involved. He was one of the founders of the 2004 Kefaya Movement that led
numerous protests against former President Hosni Mubarak before the overthrow
of his regime after the 2011 revolution.middleeastmonitor

Mystery shrouds Muslim lawyer's assassination
It has been a year since prominent Muslim
lawyer Ko Ni was assassinated, however, Aung San Suu Kyi is yet to utter a
single word to mark the first death anniversary of the man credited with
enabling her to become the country's state counselor. While the Nobel prize
winner did term the killing "a great loss for the party" a month
after the murder on Jan. 29, 2017, Suu Kyi, who has in recent times faced
strong criticism for her continued silence on the plight of persecuted Rohingya
Muslim community, appears to be not pushing for all the facts of the case to
come to surface by her stony silence. The assassination of Ko Ni continues to be
shrouded in mystery despite the fact that the alleged gunman who pulled the
trigger at Yangon International Airport has been in police custody since late
February 2017 along with three other suspects who supposedly paid him for the
killing.
