After Kerala, Meghalaya passes resolution against Centre’s cattle trade
notification
Guwahati: Meghalaya assembly has passed a resolution against Centre’s
recent notification banning cattle trade in animal markets for slaughter.The
resolution, moved by the state’s Congress govt, was passed during a special
day-long session of the assembly to approve the GST bill.Meghalaya becomes the
second state after Kerala to pass a resolution through the state assembly
opposing the notification on cattle trade issued last month.There has been
considerable opposition in Meghalaya against Modi govt’s notification on Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 2017.Ruling Congress, opposition parties—United
Democratic Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party—and even National
People’s Party, which is part of NDA Govt in Centre, have opposed the notification. BJP
too has witnessed setbacks in Meghalaya on the issue. Two district presidents
and nearly 5,000 youth wing members from Garo Hills region of the state have
resigned from the party in the past weeks.Assembly poll in Meghalaya is
scheduled for next year and the sensitive issue could hurt the BJP, which is

Rajasthan vigilantes attack trucks with TN officials transporting cows
Jaipur:Trucks transporting cows from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to Tamil
Nadu have been attacked by around 50 cow vigilantes, who also blocked NH 15 on
suspicion of cattle smuggling in Rajasthan’s Barmer district, police said on
Monday. 4 persons have been arrested and action taken against 7 policemen,
including an inspector, for allegedly not taking the matter seriously and
reaching the spot late on Sunday night, a senior police official said.
Officials of Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Dept had purchased 50 cows and calves
from Jaisalmer and transporting them in 5 trucks with NOC and all required
papers and permission from the authorities and police when the cow vigilantes
attacked them.“The accused tried to attack the officials.They also tried to set
a truck on fire but police reached the spot and prevented them. The officials,
drives and cleaners were rescued and taken to the local police station. In the
meantime, several people gathered there and blocked National Highway 15,” SP,
Barmer, Gagandeep Singla told PTI.“The accused pelted stones at the trucks and
damaged one truck. The cows were rescued and taken to a local cow shelter for
the time being,” he said.A case against 50 persons has been registered for
voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty and for assault or
criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and also
under the National Highway Act. Chainaram, Kamlesh, Vikram and Jaswant have

prevails, posing a grave risk to democracy. He also expressed concern over
“growing incidents of vigilantism” in the country. “The security situation
across the country is bad. Our national security, internal security is worse

'Fatwa' issued against Ajmer head over beef statement
Sher Mohammad Khan, head of Darul Uloom Ishaqiya in Jodhpur has issued a
‘Fatwa’, calling for “social boycott”, against spiritual head of Ajmer Dargah
Syed Zainul Abedin for announcing to give up beef and extending his support to
overhaul the practice of instant talaq. Khan slammed the views of Ajmer
Dargah’s Dewan and has stated that “the words uttered by Abdein were against the
word of Allah,” reported News18.“Cow is the symbol of religious belief. Not
only the Govt, but it is also the duty of every follower of the religion to
protect them,” Abedin had said in April.

of divorce is there in Quran and the 3-layered divorce is also mentioned.
Though the practice of instant divorce is not an appropriate form in the eyes

unaware of his own religion and he should seek public repentance and

New Delhi:Abid Hussain had just completed his afternoon namaaz at his gaushala
(cow shelter) in Nuh district of Haryana’s Mewat region. A devoted manager of cow
shelter, the 23-year-old explained how his day revolved around taking care of
the 50 cows now under his care. Three years ago, soon after completing his
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Hussain decided to take charge of the
first Muslim-owned cow shelter in Mewat that his brother, Mohammad Habib, had
opened. Since then, his foremost priority is to get rid of the ‘cow
slaughterer’ tag attached to his community. “We want to prove to people that
Muslims are not cow slaughterers. Muslims are cow protectors. It is just

Triple talaq: UP panchayat fines man Rs 2 lakh
Sambhal: A panchayat in Sambhal has fined a man Rs 2 lakh for divorcing
his wife by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice in one go and asked him to pay Rs 60,000 as
mehr to his wife. In its verdict delivered on Sunday, the Turk community
panchayat, attended by members of 52 villages, at the Madarsa Khalil-ul-Uloom
in Sambhal’s Raisati area, also helped the bride’s family get back dowry given
to the groom. The couple, a 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, had been
married for barely 10 days. There was a fight, prompting the man to pronounce
talaq thrice in a fit of rage and asking his wife to return to her parental
village.“The family of the bride then approached the Turk panchayat. The
panchayat in its decision yesterday took strong cognizance of the utterance of
triple talaq in a single go and unanimously slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the
groom who gave the money in cash immediately,” Shahid Hussain, coordinator of
the Turk community panchayat, told PTI.“The panchayat also facilitated the
return of the items given in dowry and asked the groom to pay mehr of Rs 60,000
to the bride,” Hussain added. Panchayat, which gave its ruling as the deeply
polarising issue of triple talaq is up before the Supreme Court, was headed by
Asrar Babu.According to Hussain, community members have decided that in no
circumstances will a person be allowed to utter triple talaq in one go. “If the
situation reaches the level of divorce, then in the first instance, talaq
should be uttered only once. In the second go, talaq can be uttered for the
second time. During the intervening period (between talaq uttered for the first
time and second time), efforts should be made to resolve differences,” he said.PTI

discourse
Bhopal: After 6 deaths, thousands of liters of spilt milk and
destruction of tonnes of vegetables, the 10-day farmers’ agitation in Madhya
Pradesh has seemingly gained less than it bargained for. But a close look
reveals that the political discourse is set to change and that the leaderless
farmers have become more united than ever, thanks to social media. Detractors
of the agitation say that 2 main demands of the farmers – loan waiver and
implementation of the Swaminathan report which among other things, says that
the Govt should ensure that farmers get
50% plus production cost, remain unaddressed. The arson in Mandsaur and other
places in Madhya Pradesh during the 10-day agitation gave the farmers a bad
name, say detractors.But on the ground, things are changing. This was by far a
leaderless movement, bypassing the traditional farmer leaders and political
parties and led by the Patidars in the state. The movement was largely fuelled
by social media with various WhatsApp and Facebook groups interacting and
dictating its pace and direction.Patidar Samaj state president Mahendra Patidar
says they have gained much when it comes to networking with other farmer’s
organizations across the state. “From now on it will be a more coordinated

Farmer unions demand President’s rule in MP:IANS
New Delhi:Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh, an umbrella body of 62 farmer
unions have passed a resolution seeking dismissal of the Madhya Pradesh Govt and imposition of President’s rule in the
state.To express their anger against the “anti-farmer polices” of Modi Govt,
these unions have decided to block traffic for 3 hours on all national highways
across the country on June 16. Deepak Sharma, spokesperson of the Bhartiya
Kisan Union-Asli, said: “We have decided to hold nationwide agitation till June
15 as BJP govts in the Centre and states have failed to solve farmers’
problems. On June 16, we will block national highways from 12 pm to 3
pm.”Naresh Sirohi, General Secretary of Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangh, said all
farmers had been asked to shoot videos of protest marches.
MP: Police beat up 80-yr-old woman, her 100-yr-old husband for allegedly
helping protesters
New Delhi:During last week’s agitation in Madhya Pradesh over the
killing of six protesters in police firing, an 80-year old woman claimed she
along with her 100-year old husband were beaten up by the police. According to
a report by NDTV, the woman, Kamalabhai Mewade, who had a swollen face and a
fractured arm, said the police accused her of being in league with the
protesters from a farmers’ rally at Phanda Kalan village near Sehore.Mewade
said the police were chasing protesters who took a short cut through her compound,
after which the police started accusing her of helping the protesters.“They
said ‘Buddhi (old woman), you ordered that trucks be set on fire, you set the
place ablaze,” the woman was quoted by NDTV as saying. “I told them that I
cannot move from my cot. I have had a rod inserted in my leg and I have been
sitting here for the last one-and-a-half years. Still, they beat me up,” she
added. She also said that her son and four grandsons were arrested illegally by
the police.Mewade said that she and her husband Shivcharan Mewada will go on
fast until CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan come
up to meet her. “I will not eat till the CM comes and meets me,” NDTV quoted her as

after the Supreme Court announced that it would order Pandey's removal unless

channel asks for clarification
New Delhi:BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra’s attempt to get back at NDTV,
for asking him to leave mid-show following his allegation that NDTV has an
agenda, fell flat on his face, all thanks to a fake news article. On Sunday
morning, Patra re-tweeted a story by The Times of Islamabad website which criticised
PM Modi’s Make in India programme based on data they attributed to NDTV. Along
with the re-tweet, Patra wrote, “Hmmm …agenda”.NDTV immediately responded to
Patra’s tweet, saying that the story is fake and does not refer anywhere to
NDTV. The channel further sought a clarification from the BJP spokesperson. In
its reply NDTV tweeted, “Fake story, also does not refer anywhere to NDTV. We
are wrongly named in headline and URL. Please issue a clarification.”The
article referred to by ‘Times of Islamabad’, a Pakistani web portal, was a
column written by former Union minister P Chidamabram for The Indian Express on

and Hindu communities have come together to revive once abandoned mosques in
Punjab.After Partition, thousands of Muslims migrated to Pakistan, leaving
behind abandoned structures that were once used for worship.In a bid to reach
out to his Muslim brethren, Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Habibur Rehman Sani,
has been working tirelessly to give these mosques a new lease of life with the
help of members from the Hindu and Sikh communities."The situation in
Punjab is different as compared to other parts of the country. Sikhs and Hindus
are joining hands to restore these mosques. They are also generous with donations,"says

the last 70 years, we have been able to revive over 360 mosques, some in rural

areas. In Ajitwal village, a few youth started work on the site. Their efforts
attracted more people to the cause. Since there are no Muslim families left in
the area, Muslim migrant workers have begun coming here to offer prayers. Now
every Friday, a maulvi comes to officiate weekly prayers from the neighbouring

mosque. Of the 360 revived mosques, 52 are in the major cities in Punjab,"

fully empowered and equipped – that is, physically, mentally and spiritually

the 70-year-old, Chandrakantha said that at the end of the day, a woman was

together. How to be victorious, how to maintain peace in families which are

Muzaffarnagar:8 injured in clash over alleged eve-teasing
8 persons were injured in a clash between members of 2 communities over
an alleged eve-teasing incident at Ladwa village here, police on Sunday
said.The incident took place last evening under Titali police station area. 2
youths allegedly eve-teased a 15-year-old girl, who had gone to draw water from
a hand pump.The girl told his family members about the incident. They
confronted the youths and their relatives, leading to a heated argument which
snowballed into a clash. The two groups wielded lathis and threw stones at each

Muzaffarnagar:A 30-year-old woman, displaced after 2013 Muzaffarnagar
riots, was allegedly raped by 4 persons, police said on Sunday.The incident
took place on Saturday when the woman was picked up by a man and taken to a
nearby jungle where 3 others joined him and raped her. In a complaint filed
with the police, the woman told that the accused had threatened her with dire
consequences if she reported the matter to anyone.Forced to flee home after the
riots, the woman has been living in a village in Deoband police station area of
Saharanpur district, along with her mother. All the 4 accused were on the run,

UP villagers to rename village as ‘PoK’ to protest against lack of
facilities
Kanpur: Residents of a village in UP’s Kanpur district have found a
unique way to protest the lack of the most basic of facilities. They have decided
to rename Simmranpur as PoK or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, saying their
situation is no better. Villagers complain Simmranpur, which falls under
Daulatpur gram panchayat of Ghatampur, lacks educational and health facilities
as well as electricity, proper roads, school and dispensary. There is only one
hand pump in the village that is now used by villagers to tie their cattle and
children, who play with its lever, after it stopped working eight years
ago.Village shopkeepers have even put up placards at their establishments last
Thursday, saying renaming the village was the only way left for them to ensure
development. “We will keep referring to the village as PoK till the time
electricity, water and proper roads are not made available to us,” read the hand-written

Lucknow:Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of UP Police had, on Saturday, booked ex-representative
of Zakir Husain Memorial Trust and others for alleged fraud. Pratyush Shukla
was booked for forging signatures of two district officers to verify that a
camp for the differently-abled had been held on May 29, 2010 using funds

possession of arms, which were a part of the consignment used in the 1993
blasts.The actor, who was on bail during the trial, had surrendered in May 2013

NIA, moved to his native Gujarat, joined an academy in Ahmedabad and started
teaching UPSC aspirants. Few days ago, he moved a petition in the designated
trial court, where Mecca Masjid blast case was being heard and sought exemption
from personal appearance, citing among many reasons his teaching assignment in
Ahmedabad. "It was only for a scheduled hearing, the petition to condone
the absence was moved as he needed to come all the way from Gujarat. It is a
fact that he is involved in an academy and leading his own life,'' a source,
who is acquainted with the Mecca Ma sjid blast case, said. Incidentally, the
trial in the Mecca Masjid case is scheduled to resume from Monday. The trial

SC orders NEET results be declared, CBSE to announce them in two weeks
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered that the results of
the 2017 National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) be declared by June 26,
thereby overruling a stay the Madras high court had issued.CBSE, which conducts
NEET, said it will declare the NEET results by June 26 as per the SC order. The
results were originally scheduled to be released June 8.The top court on Monday
also directed all high courts not to entertain any petition on the 2017 NEET.timesofindia

know why our names are not there in the list though we teach Yoga to students
as it has been introduced in the school curriculum by this (Yogi) Govt,” Abdul

have not been included because of Ramzaan. “Govt probably thought that Muslims
are observing Roza in this pious month of Ramazan. In the first our name was
there in the list but then no one asked us to fill the form while others filled
it,” he said. A co-ordinator who is
Assistant Block Resource Centre Co-ordinator, and prepared the list said some
Muslims might have been left out inadvertently. “There is no design in this,”
she said seeking anonymity but could not answer as how many Muslim teachers are

leader held a secret meeting in Cairo last year with Egyptian President Abdel
Fattah al-Sisi to discuss a regional peace plan, Israeli newspaper Haaretz
reported Monday.The potential for such a trip had been rumored in the Israeli
media at the time, as part of a deal for PM Benjamin Netanyahu to bring Isaac Herzog's
Zionist Union into his coalition, but there has been no report of it actually
going ahead.There was no comment from Israeli or Egyptian authorities on the
report.According to Haaretz report, regional leaders wanted Herzog involved in
