Meet the Meos, the Muslim ‘gau rakhshaks’ of Mewat
New Delhi:Abid Hussain had just completed his afternoon namaaz at his gaushala
(cow shelter) in Nuh district of Haryana’s Mewat region. A devoted manager of cow
shelter, the 23-year-old explained how his day revolved around taking care of
the 50 cows now under his care. Three years ago, soon after completing his
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Hussain decided to take charge of the
first Muslim-owned cow shelter in Mewat that his brother, Mohammad Habib, had
opened. Since then, his foremost priority is to get rid of the ‘cow
slaughterer’ tag attached to his community. “We want to prove to people that
Muslims are not cow slaughterers. Muslims are cow protectors. It is just

Triple talaq: UP panchayat fines man Rs 2 lakh
Sambhal: A panchayat in Sambhal has fined a man Rs 2 lakh for divorcing
his wife by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice in one go and asked him to pay Rs 60,000 as
mehr to his wife. In its verdict delivered on Sunday, the Turk community
panchayat, attended by members of 52 villages, at the Madarsa Khalil-ul-Uloom
in Sambhal’s Raisati area, also helped the bride’s family get back dowry given
to the groom. The couple, a 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, had been
married for barely 10 days. There was a fight, prompting the man to pronounce
talaq thrice in a fit of rage and asking his wife to return to her parental
village.“The family of the bride then approached the Turk panchayat. The
panchayat in its decision yesterday took strong cognizance of the utterance of
triple talaq in a single go and unanimously slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the
groom who gave the money in cash immediately,” Shahid Hussain, coordinator of
the Turk community panchayat, told PTI.“The panchayat also facilitated the
return of the items given in dowry and asked the groom to pay mehr of Rs 60,000
to the bride,” Hussain added. Panchayat, which gave its ruling as the deeply
polarising issue of triple talaq is up before the Supreme Court, was headed by
Asrar Babu.According to Hussain, community members have decided that in no
circumstances will a person be allowed to utter triple talaq in one go. “If the
situation reaches the level of divorce, then in the first instance, talaq
should be uttered only once. In the second go, talaq can be uttered for the
second time. During the intervening period (between talaq uttered for the first
time and second time), efforts should be made to resolve differences,” he said.PTI
Leaderless but more united, farmers set to force change in political
discourse
Bhopal: After 6 deaths, thousands of liters of spilt milk and
destruction of tonnes of vegetables, the 10-day farmers’ agitation in Madhya
Pradesh has seemingly gained less than it bargained for. But a close look
reveals that the political discourse is set to change and that the leaderless
farmers have become more united than ever, thanks to social media. Detractors
of the agitation say that 2 main demands of the farmers – loan waiver and
implementation of the Swaminathan report which among other things, says that
the Govt should ensure that farmers get
50% plus production cost, remain unaddressed. The arson in Mandsaur and other
places in Madhya Pradesh during the 10-day agitation gave the farmers a bad
name, say detractors. But on the ground, things are changing. This was by far a
leaderless movement, bypassing the traditional farmer leaders and political
parties and led by the Patidars in the state. The movement was largely fuelled
by social media with various WhatsApp and Facebook groups interacting and
dictating its pace and direction.Patidar Samaj state president Mahendra Patidar
says they have gained much when it comes to networking with other farmer’s
organizations across the state. “From now on it will be a more coordinated
nation-wide agitation. Our fight is far from over,” he insists.HT

Sikh, Hindu communities come together to revive abandoned mosques in
Punjab
Punjab: In a shining instance of communal harmony, members of the Sikh
and Hindu communities have come together to revive once abandoned mosques in
Punjab. After Partition, thousands of Muslims migrated to Pakistan, leaving
behind abandoned structures that were once used for worship. In a bid to reach
out to his Muslim brethren, Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Habibur Rehman Sani,
has been working tirelessly to give these mosques a new lease of life with the
help of members from the Hindu and Sikh communities."The situation in
Punjab is different as compared to other parts of the country. Sikhs and Hindus
are joining hands to restore these mosques. They are also generous with donations,"says
Mohammad Muktseem Ahrari, Principal Secretary, Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam."In
the last 70 years, we have been able to revive over 360 mosques, some in rural
areas, where only a few Muslim families reside," he added. In fact, despite
a minor communal riot in Phagwara in July 2016, people from various communities
still came forward to revive the mosque, where prayers are now being
offered.Ravinder Singh, 79, a local, said he was happy when the mosque was revived.
"It is nice to hear the morning azaan again," he said.Sikh youth in
villages like Ajitwal in Moga district and Hans Kalan in Ludhiana district
approached the Ludhiana Jama Masjid Imam to revive the old mosques in their
areas. In Ajitwal village, a few youth started work on the site. Their efforts
attracted more people to the cause. Since there are no Muslim families left in
the area, Muslim migrant workers have begun coming here to offer prayers. Now
every Friday, a maulvi comes to officiate weekly prayers from the neighbouring
village."Muslim or non-Muslim, everyone has come together to revive the
mosque. Of the 360 revived mosques, 52 are in the major cities in Punjab,"
says Muktseem. "Jis tareh se hum sab Punjab mein mil-julkar rehte hain,

RSS women’s wing tells its girls: “A man’s job is to make money, woman’s
quality is motherhood”
Over 50 school-going adolescent girls, armed with laathis, swords and
knives, with a saffron ribbon tied around their wrists, brandished their
weapon-wielding skills in the open courtyard of GLT Saraswati Bal Mandir school
in New Delhi on Sunday. Dressed in crisp, pink bordered, white salwaar-kameez
and white canvas shoes, they appeared confident and ready for combat. This was
the culmination of a 15-day training camp, which began on May 27, organized by
the Rashtriya Sevika Samiti,right-wing RSS women’s wing, which trained the
girls’ skills to ‘fight as well as instilled moral values in them’. During the
performance, the girls deftly exhibited yoga aasanas and later huddled to form
pyramids, where they cried in unison, “Bharat maata ki jai!”. “This is the goal
of the sanstha,”said Rashtriya Sevika Samiti’s Uttar Shetra Karyavahika,
Chandrakantha, who was the chief guest at the event. “We teach the girls to be
fully empowered and equipped – that is, physically, mentally and spiritually
strong, so that a girl is capable of protecting herself and is able to guard
her country, its traditions, its sanskriti and its languages. The Samiti
instills pride for the nation in her.”While training the young girls to combat,
the Samiti also teaches them the importance of ‘upholding the family values’.
Wearing a pink-bordered white saree, with her hair pulled back neatly in a bun,
the 70-year-old, Chandrakantha said that at the end of the day, a woman was
responsible for keeping the family together as a tight unit. “Rashtriya Sevika
Samiti trains the girls the skillful art of uniting and keeping the family
together. How to be victorious, how to maintain peace in families which are
weak or broken – this is what is taught."Samiti informs the girls that
becoming good mothers should be the absolute, ultimate goal for any woman. It
is only her who is responsible for sculpting the nature of her child. “A mother
is the ultimate creator. If she wants, she can bring up her child to be a saint
or a destroyer." She added that there should be specific gender-defined
roles which should be practiced in society. “A man’s job is to make money –
masculinity is his quality, whereas a woman’s quality is motherhood. She should
never forget that.” indianexpress

Israeli PM met Egypt's Sisi in secret in Cairo: Report
Jerusalem:Israel's PM and opposition
leader held a secret meeting in Cairo last year with Egyptian President Abdel
Fattah al-Sisi to discuss a regional peace plan, Israeli newspaper Haaretz
reported Monday. The potential for such a trip had been rumored in the Israeli
media at the time, as part of a deal for PM Benjamin Netanyahu to bring Isaac Herzog's
Zionist Union into his coalition, but there has been no report of it actually
going ahead. There was no comment from Israeli or Egyptian authorities on the
report.According to Haaretz report, regional leaders wanted Herzog involved in
the talks because they felt Netanyahu's right-wing Govt was not capable of making a deal. Paper said
talks failed because Netanyahu would not accept Palestinian conditions. His coalition
talks with Herzog also broke down and he instead struck a deal with now Defense
Minister Avigdor Lieberman, creating what was described as the most right-wing
Israeli Govt ever. Herzog reportedly told a party meeting that Palestinian
demands were not new but were presented as part of a regional solution.Last
year, Netanyahu held another secret meeting with Sisi, King Abdullah II of
Jordan and then US Secretary of State John Kerry in Jordan's Red Sea resort of

Egypt bans scores of news websites in growing censorship crackdown
Cairo: An often fiery Govt critic, Egyptian journalist Khaled al-Balshi
has been arrested, had his operations monitored, and staff harassed by police
for years. Yet his website Al-Bedaiah, a rare dissident voice in Egypt, had
never been touched. On Sunday that changed when it suddenly went blank with no
warning after being blocked, part of what Balshi called an unprecedented and
far-reaching state crackdown on scores of news websites in recent
weeks."Let's be clear, the Egyptian websites going through this are
dealing with a long-term shutdown -- this is not short term," said Balshi
from his downtown Cairo office, where 4 work stations sat idle, because staff
feared coming to work in case of arrest.Balshi's website was the 57th blocked
since May 24, according to the Association for Freedom of Thought and
Expression, NGO tracking the affected sites through software that monitors
outages. Journalists see the campaign against them as a step toward banning all
but the most state-aligned media, effectively reversing the private media boom
that flourished in the final decade of former president Hosni Mubarak's rule
and which they say helped push him from power in 2011. Reuters

Daesh media accuses US-led forces of using white phosphorous in Raqqa
US-led forces in Syria have been accused by Daesh of using white
phosphorous in eastern Raqqa, Britain’s Telegraph has reported. Images
purporting to be of the banned substance in use in the Syrian city appear to
have been confirmed by an anti-Daesh group. An anonymous US official told the
New York Times that the US forces in Syria and Iraq are not using the banned
munitions against personnel. White phosphorous burns through to the bone and
keeps on burning as long as it is in contact with the air. Its use in populated
areas is forbidden under international law. If it is used, it has to be in open
areas for the purposes of laying down a smokescreen.middleeastmonitor
Qatari 'ransom' money with us, not Shia armed groups: Iraq's PM
Iraq's PM has rejected Saudi and UAE media claims that a $500m ransom
was paid by Qatar to Shia Muslim armed groups in Iraq to secure the release of
26 kidnapped Qatari hunters, saying that the money was received by the Govt of Iraq and that the sum was still in the
Iraqi central bank."Yes we received [ransom] money and we got hold of the
funds and right now we still have it deposited in the Iraqi central bank,"
Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday in an address to the Popular
Mobilisation Forces, an umbrella group of mainly Shia Muslim armed groups that
have some state backing."It was never cashed out. I heard in various media
outlets that the money was dispersed to one group or another but let me make it
clear. This [ransom] money is still kept in our central bank," Abadi added
in his remarks. aljazeera
Qatar hosted Taliban 'at request of US govt: Qatar official

special envoy on counterterrorism told Al Jazeera. Mutlaq Al Qahtani said the
Gulf country hosted the Taliban "by request of the US Govt " and as
part of Qatar's "open-door policy, to facilitate talks, to mediate and to
bring peace". He added that Qatar "was facilitating the talks between
the Americans, the Taliban and the Govt of Afghanistan".Al Qahtani's statement
comes after US President Donald Trump accused Qatar of "historically"
funding "terrorism at a very high level" - an allegation Qatar
denies. He added that the country focuses on "preventive diplomacy, trying
to solve conflict, using our good offices, trying to bring people and
civilisations with different faiths to mutual understanding, coexistence and
tolerance, while also paying a lot of emphasis on unemployment, because we
believe unemployment is one of the causes of terrorism or one of the root
causes of violent extremism that could lead to terrorism". aljazeera

Sanctions will not harm economy:Qatari Finance minister
Qatar can easily defend its economy and currency against sanctions by
other Arab states, Qatari finance minister Ali Sherif al-Emadi told CNBC TV on
Monday. He said that the countries which had imposed sanctions on Qatar would
also lose money because of the damage to business in the region."A lot of
people think we're the only ones to lose in this ... If we're going to lose a
dollar, they will lose a dollar also," he said. Qatar can import goods
from Turkey, the Far East or Europe and it will respond to the crisis by
diversifying its economy even more, he told CNBC. aljazeera

France’s Neo-Fascist National Front stumbles again on electoral stage
France’s far-right National Front is projected to win
no more than five seats in the lower house of parliament, polls showed after
the first round of voting on Sunday, failing to capitalise again on widespread
frustration at mainstream parties. It was the second setback for the
anti-establishment party in barely a month after its leader Marine Le Pen
reached the presidential run-off vote only to be soundly beaten by Emmanuel
Macron and his bid to renew French politics from the center. Her defeat in May
brought huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval
to follow Britain’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election as US president,
and disappointment to the party faithful. middleeastmonitor
