Trump targets India, China as US exits climate pact
Washington:US has stopped implementation of its commitments under the
Paris climate agreement signed by 195 countries in 2015, President Donald Trump
announced on Thursday, ignoring pleas from international allies and a
significant section of US political and business leaders. Accord “would
undermine our economy, hamstring our workers, weaken our sovereignty…,”Trump,
who had campaigned in the 2016 election promising to pull out from it, said.
Paris deal gives undue advantage to India and China, “world’s leading
polluters”, at the cost of US interests, Trump said, unravelling a critical
area of mutual interest and cooperation between New Delhi and Washington in
recent years. India ratified the agreement last year, and ex-President Barack
Obama considered it as a defining legacy of his tenure. Trump’s tirade against
India, whose per capita carbon emission is one-tenth of US, comes ahead of a
likely visit by PM Narendra Modi to Washington later this month. “China will be
allowed to build hundreds of additional coal plants… India will be allowed to
double its coal production by 2020. Think of it: India can double their coal
production. We’re supposed to get rid of ours,” the President said, adding that
the agreement “is less about the climate and more about other countries gaining
a financial advantage over the US.”“India makes its participation contingent on
receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid from
developed countries,” Trump said, of the financing commitments by developed
countries under the pact that is widely considered inadequate to deal with the
challenges of climate change.

PM Modi's US visit still on despite Trump rant against India on climate
change
Washington:US President Donald Trump unloaded on India among other
countries during an epic rant on Thursday while announcing American withdrawal
from Paris climate change accord. The shrill speech, replete with claims of
American victimhood at the hands of the rest of the world, casts a chill on PM Narendra Modi's expected visit to the White
House later this month, which officials say remains on schedule.Phone and
cables lines between Washington and New Delhi were buzzing on Thursday and
Friday as Indian officials and diplomats took stock of Trump's direct,
no-holds-barred attack in which he accused New Delhi of trying to extract
"billions and billions and billions" of dollars in foreign aid from
the developed world to sign up for the climate accord.Although dates for PM's
trip have not been formally or officially announced, the White House has
penciled in June 26-27 for the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and
Modi.Meeting, which Indian officials said on background is still on despite the
climate change fireworks, will now take place under a cloud of misgivings,
including the Trump administration's crackdown of guest worker visas that is
adversely affecting Indian businesses, its squeeze on US manufacturing abroad
that is forcing a scaling down of US investment in India, and now its
withdrawal from Paris Treaty after previous US administrations dragged New
Delhi kicking and screaming into it. Although no one is talking of canceling
the visit yet, Trump's harsh critiques have cooled the expected ardor between
Washington and New Delhi that a small constituency of Trump bhakts in both
countries had anticipated and forecast."Relationship is bigger than any
one issue. We need to keep engaging," a senior Indian official involved in
the visit told TOI, confirming the visit was still on and pointing out how
China's leader Xi Jinping came to US despite Trump unloading on Beijing for
more than a year. TOI

Kashmir internet ban: No one knows who ordered the shutdown, shows RTI
Srinagar:For about 4 months last year, Kashmir reeled under a mobile
internet ban clamped to tamp down on rumours and controversial videos that
fanned a snowballing unrest in the Valley. Prepaid mobile phones, a select
batch of landline numbers and even fixed-line broadband services were
occasionally snapped as authorities struggled to contain clashes that left
nearly 100 dead and thousands injured. The internet ban triggered widespread
condemnation and criticism that the Govt was infringing fundamental rights. But
who ordered the clampdown? Two arms of the state Govt responsible for law and
order – the home department and the divisional commissioner’s office -- deny
ordering any shutdown of phone and internet services on July 9 last year.

Cattle sale restriction: Supply to largest fresh milk market drops 50 %: indianexpress
Kolkata: As the West Bengal Govt locks horns with Centre over its
notification banning the trade of cattle at animal markets for slaughter and
meat, there has been one fallout: supply to the largest fresh milk market in
the country has halved and there has been a sharp rise in prices. Traders say
it has become very difficult to bring cows and buffaloes from UP and this has hit the milk market very hard.
The row over beef, vigilante groups, police high-handedness and the central Govt
order on cattle trade have had a ripple effect on 75-year-old market in Ganesh
Talkies area of Kolkata. Market comprises over 150 traders, dealers and
retailers who deal daily in over 1.5 lakh litres of milk. During the festive
season, milk supply rises to around 3 lakh litres per day. Ever since the row,
this daily supply has dipped to 55,000 litres of milk. “People are scared to
bring their cattle to the markets in UP. It is difficult to lead the cattle out
of the market after buying them. It is almost impossible to transport them.
Vigilante groups to police, all are snatching away the cattle. It makes no
difference to them whether the cattle has been bought for slaughter or for
milk. Our main cattle markets are located in UP includingDildarnagar which has
been shut for the past two months,” Rajesh Sinha, president of Jorasanko Dughdo
Byabshayi Samity, said.“Ours is the largest fresh milk market in the country.
The problem of procuring animals for milk started over a year ago, but the
situation has deteriorated in the last few months. Earlier, on an average, over
1.5 lakh litres of milk used to be supplied to and from the market. Now it is
half. The price used to be Rs 50-55 per litre. It has jumped to Rs 70-80 per
litre,” Sinha said.
Behead those who slaughter cows, says Shankaracharya of Varanasi’s
Sumeru Peeth
In a shocking statement, Varanasi’s Sumeru Peeth Shankaracharya
Jagadguru Narendrananda Saraswati on Friday said that those who slaughter cows
should be killed, news channel Aaj Tak reported. The Shankaracharya, a person
with a large religious followership, ‘urged’ people to take law into their
hands and behead those who kill cows. “Protecting a cow is the responsibility
of the state, if the state is failing, or, is provoking such people, I would
like to urge people of this country to take up this cause and kill those who
slaughter cows,” Shankaracharya said. He further expressed his wish to declare
cow as the national animal, and said, that killing a cow is equal to an act of
treason. In a similar controversy, Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday recommended
cow to be declared a national animal. “Keeping in mind Articles 48 and 51A(g)
of the Constitution and to provide legal entity for their proper protection and
conservation of cow, it is expected from the Govt that cow is declared a
national animal,” Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma said in a 145-page order. The
court, while delivering the directie, said India was a predominantly
agriculture-based country where animal husbandry played an important role.financialexpress

Israel set to approve 2500 settlement housing units:aljazeera
Israel is expected to approve nearly 2,500 new settlement housing units
across the occupied West Bank next week after the projects were tabled at a
planning council meeting on Friday. Israeli NGO Peace Now said on Friday that
Israel's Civil Administration - the military body governing the occupied West
Bank - was scheduled to meet on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss 27 separate
plans for settlement housing units across the West Bank. According to local
media reports, about 1,500 of the housing units set to be approved are in major
settlement blocs including Maaleh Adumim and Ariel, which Israel wants and
expects to annex in any potential peace deal. One of the items on the agenda
will allegedly pave the way for the construction of 102 housing units in
Amichai, the first new settlement to be officially created by the Govt in 25
years. The rest lie outside the blocs and deep within the West Bank, including
the Beit El settlement, northeast of Ramallah, and the Susiya settlement in the
South Hebron Hills. The deal comes on the heels of US President Donald Trump's
visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Palestinians and the
majority of the international community view settlements as unlawful and a
major obstacle to a two-state solution, as they are built on land that the
