growth: 1 in 4 beggars in India a Muslim, reveals census
New Delhi: Almost a quarter
of India’s 370,000 beggars are Muslims, newly released data from the 2011
Census show, reinforcing that the community still lags behind on most counts
despite the country’s rapid economic growth. Muslims, the largest minority who
make up 14.2% of India’s 1.25-billion population, come out pretty much at the
bottom of most socio-economic indices, even a decade after a high-level govt probe
into their historical disadvantages led to policy actions. India has the
second-largest Muslim population globally, after Indonesia.“There is a high
level of destitution and disparity. But (it is) not surprising,” said Amitabh
Kundu, a development economist who led a committee to evaluate the policy
impact on the community.Talk of Muslim development is often polarising and evokes
sharp views in the political sphere. But the landmark 2006 report by the Sachar
Committee, which was commissioned in 2005, showed the community faced
disadvantages. At that time, less than 5% of Muslims held govt jobs. “All
these point to discrimination,” Kundu said.Muslim population inside jails is
going up too. Of the people lodged in Maharashtra jails in 2013, 31.09% were
Muslims. The state average was 19.06%.Policymakers say it is time to revitalise
programmes flowing from Sachar recommendations.“We submitted our findings on
this. Govt hasn’t rejected it, but hasn’t taken any step to implement it
either,” said Kundu, who was tasked by the previous UPA govt with evaluating the progress of
minorities.There are many “versions to it” linked to “occupations, education
levels and also social identities expressed in terms of religious and caste

that Goswami reportedly made during his weekly night news show ‘The NewsHour’
that broadcasts on the Times Now channel.“My client states that without
verifying facts and without having any positive and/or cogent evidence in
support, you have recklessly and callously, with deliberate and malicious
intention made and published on the television the aforesaid false, defamatory
and damaging remarks against my client, which have severely harmed my client’s

Rising Intolerance': US On Cow Slaughter Row
Washington: Expressing
concern over reports of "rising intolerance and violence" in India,
the US has asked the Indian govt to do "everything in its power" to
protect citizens and to bring to justice the perpetrators. Responding to
questions on reports of alleged violence against people eating beef and assault
on two Muslim women carrying buffalo meat in Madhya Pradesh, State Department
Spokesman John Kirby said, "We stand in solidarity with the people and Govt
of India in supporting exercise of freedom of religion and expression and in
confronting all forms of intolerance.""We're obviously concerned by
reports of rising intolerance and violence...As we do in countries facing such
problems around the world, we urge the govt to do everything in its power to

New Delhi: Amid a rising
debate and protests over incidents of violence against minorities including
Muslims and Dalits from various parts of the country, a new video has surfaced
on social media which shows four-five self-acclaimed ‘Gau Rakshaks’ mercilessly
beating a man for allegedly carrying cow meat. The video, uploaded by one
Pratik Sinha on Facebook, shows a group of men beating up another man in the
middle of what looks like a highway road. Shouts of ‘will you kill my mother
(cow)’ in local dialect can also be heard in the background. On the other hand,
the man who is being targeted can be heard continuously asking for
‘forgiveness’ from perpetrators. Indian Express, however, could not
independently verify the authenticity of the video. Also, the exact location
where this incident took place and the identity of all the individuals involved
is unclear. However, continuous reference to cow as ‘mother’ and the fact that
the man was caught for carrying a ‘large quantity of suspicious meat on his

High Court on Friday passed fresh orders asking the Centre to ban cow slaughter
in the country, besides imposing prohibitions on import and export of cow/calf
(for slaughtering) and sale of beef and beef products in the next 6 months.The
court rejected the plea of the Centre that since the subject falls under entry
number 15 of the state list, it’s up to the state govt s to take a call on the
issue. In an order, a division bench comprising Justices Rajiv Sharma and
Sureshwar Thakur said that it had already passed a similar order on Oct.14,
2015, directing the Govt of India to enact a law prohibiting slaughtering of

Ahmedabad:Continuing to
protest against the atrocities being inflicted on them by cow vigilante groups
and upper castes, Dalits in several districts of Gujarat are refusing to
dispose of dead animals. A group of Dalits were mercilessly flogged recently
for skinning a dead cow in a village near Una in Saurashtra. Outfits such as
the Dalit Manav Adhikar Movement fighting for the rights of the community have
exhorted their members to stay away from skinning and disposing of dead
animals, which is their traditional occupation.In Surendranagar district, civic
body had to bury over 80 dead animals because the Dalits have refused to
dispose them citing threat from local cow vigilante groups, who have been
targeting Muslims and Dalits on the issue of cow slaughter and consumption of
beef.“The Dalit community, which usually skins the dead animals and then disposes
of the carcasses, has been on a strike in the district for one week, so we told
the municipal staff to dispose of the dead animals. Some other communities who

have been detained under NSA that allows preventive detention up to a year.More

30, who were carrying it in an autorickshaw to Khachrod on July 22. Police had

Dalit protests against the BJP, the party on Friday cancelled a visit by its
chief Amit Shah to Agra, scheduled for July 31.Shah was supposed to participate
in a rally by Buddhist monk and former MP Dhamma Viriyo, who has been leading
the Dhamma Chetna Yatra in Dalit-OBC pockets of UP to gather support for PM Narendra Modi. But Dalit groups and BSP
workers have protested against the BJP’s association with the yatra, and BJP
sources said this was the reason Shah’s visit was called off.Officially, BJP
state spokesperson Chandra Mohan said Shah’s visit had been cancelled because

was allegedly beaten up and forced to drink her urine by four men after
branding her as a "witch" at Pipra village in Bihar's Darbhanga
district, police said today. Four persons
beat up a Dalit woman and subsequently forced her to drink her urine on
Thursday for allegedly practising witchcraft, SDPO Anjani Kumar said.The woman
left the village after the incident, the SDPO said, adding that she lodged an
FIR yesterday. The incident occurred after some children of the village fell
ill and some locals believed that it might be the result of witchcraft

alleged that they were confined and beaten by policemen of the surveillance
squad of Gaekwad Haveli police station, for encroaching on a footpath. Following
this, city-based lawyer and activist Shamshad Pathan approached Gaekwad Haveli
police station, but the charge was denied. "The surveillance squad cops
have been picking up these vegetable and fruit vendors from Jamalpur area since
Monday, alleging that they have encroached upon the footpath and are blocking
traffic," Pathan alleged. "According to the victims, 2 constables,
Surendrasinh and Sanjaysinh, had tied them to a tree and brutally beat them.
When we approached the police station, Gaekwad Haveli police inspector VM Selar
refused to lodge an FIR and just assured us that such an incident would not

Srinagar: While the J&K
govt foiled the separatists’ planned march to the
historical Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city by imposing curfew in several
towns on Friday, people took out protests across the Valley to oppose the death
of civilians in clashes with security forces in the aftermath of the killing of
Burhan Wani.A protest was held even outside the United Nations Military
Observer Group’s office here.More than 130 people, including 46 security forces
personnel, were injured in stone-pelting at around 70 places in the
Valley.Senior separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were
arrested outside their homes soon after they stepped out and started marching

retina surgeon Dr S Natrajan on Friday described the situation in Kashmir as
“disastrous” after performing surgeries on pellet victims at the SMHS Hospital.
“The situation is disastrous. This is for the first time that I saw pellet
injuries. The eye injuries in Kashmir are unique and more severe than other
parts of the world especially in conflict region,” he told reporters here.Dr

villages in the wake of proposed march across the border up to Wagah by

Srinagar:2 soldiers and 2
militants were killed near the Line of Control in North Kashmir’s Nowgam
sector. The militants were trying to infiltrate into the Valley.Officials said
that army engaged a group of infiltrators near Nowgam sector on the LoC in
Kupwara district. In the encounter, two army men and two militants were killed.
Army said the operation is still under way.On Wednesday, Army had claimed to
have killed four foreign militants in the same sector and also arrested one

OIC condemns Turkey's

Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the coup attempt in a statement Saturday.
OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission condemned the foiled coup,
which tried to overthrow the democratically elected govt of the Republic of Turkey."While
reaffirming its unwavering support to the principles of democracy, freedom,
respect for human rights and rule of law at all costs and at any time, IPHRC
calls for immediate restoration of public order and unity across all sections

Ankara:Turkish President
Tayyip Erdogan has slammed the US for its reaction to a failed military coup in
Turkey, accusing it of harboring the man behind the plot.Ankara has demanded
the US extradite Fethullah Gulen, a cleric living in self-imposed exile in
Pennsylvania. The president lashed out at an American military official who he
said commented on the detention of thousands of military personnel in the wake
of the coup.“It’s not up to you to make that decision. Who are you? Know your
place…” Erdogan said.“Instead of thanking this nation that quashed the coup in
the name of democracy, on the contrary you are taking sides with the

coup attempt a milestone for Turkey, President Tayyip Erdogan said Friday the
country had not compromised its laws in the coup’s wake, and furthermore made

insulting me and forgive all the offenders,” he told a Martyrs' Memorial Day

sentenced Saturday 13 anti-regime opponents to death after a retrial for
allegedly killing a police officer in 2013. The court referred the 13
defendants to the grand mufti, Egypt’s highest religious authority, to explore
the possibility of handing down death sentences against them, a judicial source
said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions to speaking to media. The
