Dalit families in Madhya Pradesh seek CM’s permission to kill themselves
Sehore: With Dalit
atrocities being reported all around the country, this incident where 50 Dalit
families from Madhya Pradesh sought permission for euthanasia from CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan would again trigger
Dalit oppression related issues. Dalit families have alleged that their land
has been grabbed by musclemen and goons which leave them with no other option
on how to sustain their livelihood. However, district authorities deny
receiving any such complaint and also exclaimed that a case in regard to the
same is being heard in the court. Families, belonging to Borkhedi, Jogala,
Sohankhedi and Vasudev villages in the Nasrullahganj area of Budhni, the
assembly constituency of MP CM, have signed a memorandum which states that the
land which was allotted to them by the govt 15 years ago have not yet been
received by them which leaves them with no other means of livelihood. Land is
under the possession of influential people who have threatened to eliminate
them if needed. "These oppressed people are living in abject poverty as
they do not have any source of income. Therefore, they have sought to end their
lives," Rashtriya Dalit Chetna Manch state secretary Jaswant Singh
said.NewsX

Dalit men thrashed in
Maharashtra allegedly by over 25 people for overtaking vehicle
Beed: 2 Dalit men have said
they were beaten up allegedly by over 25 people in Maharashtra's Beed district
because they overtook their motorcycles near a petrol pump. The incident took
place on Friday in Savargaon village in Beed district. About 6 young Dalit men
who were travelling on three motorcycles overtook the accused, who then forced
them to stop and allegedly beat them up.The beating, the Dalit men claim, got
worse after the accused saw pictures of Dalit rights icon Dr BR Ambedkar on
their motorcycles."After spotting the photograph, they beat me with a
belt. They started beating us and wanted to kill us. They took me on their bike
and kept threatening us and abusing our caste," said 23-year-old Akash
Waghmare, one of the victims who have filed a complaint. Police, who are yet to
arrest the accused in the case, have registered a complaint against over 25
unidentified persons. "They had marks on their body that showed that they
were beaten with belts. There were for four others with these two boys but
since they haven't given us their statement, we don't know the full story yet.
We have not caught the accused yet. A case filed under Prevention of Atrocity
Act has been registered," said ASP in Majalgaon, Hari Balaji.NDTV

which severely damaged her internal organs.’Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)

commission shifted the girl from Lok Nayak (LNJP) Hospital to a private
facility on Saturday. The girl’s uncle alleged the accused, Shiv Shankar,

alleged.Maliwal has asked the Centre to set up a high-level ministerial
committee on women safety under the leadership of home minister Rajnath
Singh. The panel has sought details about the police action on the allegations
of the girl’s parents. Maliwal has questioned as to why a case under the SC and
ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was not filed. The police claimed they
arrested the accused thrice, but the girl turned hostile twice.Maliwal said the

`Police baton' used by cow
vigilantes in flogging of a group of Dalits in Gujarat '
Ahmedabad: Videos of the
recent stripping and flogging of a group of Dalits in Gujarat show that at
least one baton used by cow protection vigilantes "resembles" the
ones provided to Gujarat police for riot control. Videos of the incident
reported near Una town in Gir Somnath district on July 11 had gone viral,
sparking outrage nationwide, and prompting parties to point to police
complicity in the brutality.Four policemen have already been suspended after
seven or eight Dalits were thrashed for skinning a dead cow. The videos are
being examined by Gujarat CID."One accused is clearly seen wielding the `police
cane' on a group of Dalits and a middle-aged man who is pleading for
mercy," said an investigator. CID crime sleuths are trying to find out how
the "fibre baton" reached the accused. Senior Gujarat police officers
said that the cane could be bought from stores as well.TOI

Dalit youth dies in police
‘raid’, tension in Surat
Surat: A 25-year-old Dalit
youth died under mysterious circumstances in Surat Sunday night after a “police
raid”, leading to violent protests by locals in which a sub-inspector was
injured. Locals claimed that the victim was in an inebriated condition when
Sub-Inspector VS Patel slapped him after an argument and he fell on the road
and died following an epileptic seizure. Police, however, said the
Sub-Inspector had raided a gambling den and on seeing a policeman, three youths
escaped, but Mahendra Makwana fell on the ground and died.Police said Makwana,

he had a fit (epileptic seizure). The man was rushed to a hospital where he was

and attacked the sub-inspector with sticks. The policeman managed to

there with a private person, and he found Makwana walking on the road and
suspected him to be drunk. Following an argument with Makwana, the police

UP, Rajasthan lead in
crimes on SCs
New Delhi: UP and Rajasthan
lead the country in the number of crimes registered against the Scheduled
Castes, official data pertaining to 2013, 2014 and 2015 show.National
Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) counts these States among those
deserving special attention. While UP is witness to a political war of words
over an expelled BJP leader’s insulting remarks on BSP leader Mayawati, it is
Rajasthan that leads India in rate of crimes against Dalits.UP with 20% of India’s Dalit population accounts for 17
% of the crimes against them. The
numbers — ranging from 7,078 to 8,946 from 2013 to 2015 — are high, but so is
the population of Dalits in the State.52 to 65% of all crimes in Rajasthan have
a Dalit as the victim. This despite the fact that the State’s SC (Dalit)
population is just 17.8% of its total population. With 6% of India’s Dalit population,
the State accounts for up to 17% of the crimes against them across India. thehindu
Dalit protest at BJP
campaign meet, Buddhist monks ask BJP leaders to leave venue
Agra: In a major
embarrassment for the BJP, a group of Buddhist monks, which is currently
campaigning for the saffron party for the assembly polls next year, Sunday
showed the door to local BJP leaders in Aligarh after a huge protest by Dalits
and Jatavs whose support the group is seeking as part of its campaign.Currently
in its second leg, the Dhamma Chetna Yatra by some 80 monks had reached Baudh
Vihar in Naurangabad Sunday where Mayor Shakuntala Bharti was present, along
with several local BJP leaders, to greet the spiritualists. As a large section
of Dalits and Jatavs objected to the presence of BJP leaders, the monks
promptly asked the latter to leave the premises, leaving the party
red-faced.The yatra, which began from Sarnath on April 24 and was flagged off
by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, is being supervised directly by the PMO.
PM Narendra Modi is likely to address the yatra’s concluding ceremony on Oct.14
in Lucknow. Protesters removed the stage and the seats arranged by the local
BJP unit, citing cases of atrocities on the Dalit community in Una, Ghaziabad
and other places where BJP is in rule. While asking the BJP leaders to leave,
the monks told them “not to do politics of votes at our spiritual
campaign”.Several BJP leaders couldn’t enter the premises of Baudh Vihar as hundreds
of Dalits and Jatavs, allegedly backed by BSP, announced to boycott the party.
The protesters raised anti-Modi and anti-BJP slogans — “Rohith Vemula ke
hatyaron wapas jao”, “Daliton ka shoshan karne waalon wapas jao”, dharma ki
rajniti nahin chalegi” — and agreed to call off their demonstration “only if
all the BJP leaders leave the premises”. indianexpress

Indian American council
demands CBI inquiry into atrocities against Dalits, Muslims for cow protection
Indian American Muslim
Council (IAMC), advocacy group dedicated to safeguarding India's pluralist and
tolerant ethos today joined millions of Indians and people of conscience across
the world, in expressing outrage over the ongoing atrocities against Dalits and
minorities by "cow protection" extremists in India. Recent violence
in the state of Gujarat on July 11 triggered a wave of mass protests and
suicide attempts by Dalit youth, only to be followed by more atrocities in the
states of Karnataka and Maharashtra. IAMC has called for a CBI enquiry that
would cover not only the recent atrocities against Dalits but also include a
full investigation into the functioning of "cow protection" groups
and their near total disregard for the law. IAMC said, " Violence against
Dalits and minorities have intensified under the BJP-led administration, whose
worldview is aligned with the ideology of upper caste Hindu supremacy, known as
Hindutva. While the protests continue to spread, PM Narendra Modi is yet to
make a statement, much less commit to any action."iamc.com

Under siege until just a
week ago, BSP leader Mayawati on Sunday displayed her canny ability to shock
her opponents as she laid out a blueprint for building a new social alliance
between Dalits and Muslims in UP. She hopes to capitalise on the explosion of
anger against the attack on Dalits in Gujarat and disparaging remarks against
her. Instead of directly appealing to Muslims to switch their loyalties from
the ruling Samajwadi Party and throw in their lot with the BSP, Mayawati
announced at a press conference at Lucknow that she would hold a series of big
public meetings from next month to expose the SP's alleged connivance with the

He was threatened to not
accept that he is Praveen: 'Mother' Mahesh Devi, family members persist
convicted JeM man Abid is their Praveen
Meerut: For 10 years, the
family scoured through all leading newspapers daily for any information on
Praveen. On July 1, mother Mahesh Devi saw the face she had come to fear she
would never see again. The man in the photo in newspapers that day, police say,
was Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Mohammad Abid alias Fatte. Abid himself has
denied he is Praveen Jatav. But, Mahesh says, a mother’s heart knows.“In the
Lucknow jail, he walked towards us with a smiling face. I am a mother, I could
see the teary eyes behind his ‘No’. He had been threatened and pressured to not
accept that he is Praveen,” says Mahesh, who is in her late 50s.“They made us
meet Abid in the presence of senior officials of the STF, ATS and local
intelligence unit. How could he speak in front of them?” says brother Pawan,
who went to the jail with Mahesh to meet Abid.Abid’s photo in the July 1 paper
came along with the news item of him and two others being convicted by a special
court for “plotting to kill innocent people in order to create an atmosphere of
terror”. Wife Prabha says “I can never forget that day, May 5, 2006. Some
policemen, all in civil dress, came asking Praveen to drive them to some
assignment. When he didn’t return till the next day, we went to the police
station. They told us Praveen had died in an encounter and that he was a
terrorist.” Mahesh draws attention to the photograph of ‘Abid’ in the Hindi
newspaper of July 1. Placing Praveen’s photo next to it, she says, “See, you
see. Even you’ll say that this is my son.”Newspaper cutting lies in a white
polythene bag, with other cuttings the family has collected over the years. The
first of these is dated May 6, 2006, the day after Praveen disappeared. That day,
one of their neighbours rushed to them with a newspaper that said police had
killed 5 in an encounter, and that one of them could be Kankar Khera’s
Praveen.“Police asked us to identify the body. It wasn’t Praveen. When we asked
them again, the police said there were 6 terrorists who were trying to flee. 5
were killed and one managed to escape, and the one who fled was Praveen,” says
Prabha. Shahnawaz Alam of Rihai Manch, NGO that is helping the family seek a
DNA test to establish whether Abid is Praveen or not, says there are many
loopholes in the police theory.“UP STF claims they intercepted a car and caught
three JeM militants from Pakistan, Mohammad Abid, Mirza Rashid Beg and Saifur
Rehman, with weapons,” he says. If police fired 39 rounds and terrorists 26, as
has been claimed, why did no one get hurt, he asks. The chargesheet also states
that the STF caught the JeM men when they were about to use a handgrenade. Alam
asks how it was possible for police to have spotted them pulling the pin of a
grenade in the midst of a gunfight.Alam also points out, “Abid told Pawan’s
family he was arrested from Ghaziabad while the STF showed his arrest in
Lucknow. Abid claimed he did not know Hindi while jail sources told me he
writes fluent Hindi.” Meerut DIG Lakshmi Singh says she is looking into files
of the old cases related to Praveen, to verift what happened at that time. The
then Meerut SSP, Navniet Sekera, didn’t respond to calls. “Praveen has a tattoo
of his name on his right arm, which was missing, but a scar on the right side
