Protests swell, allies push back: Government signals a climb down on
all-India NRC
As protests against the new citizenship law swelled nationwide and there
was a pushback from state governments and even its allies, the first voices
from the government and the ruling BJP were heard Friday climbing down on the
plan for a pan-India NRC).While JD(U) president and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar
said the NRC would not be implemented in Bihar, Lok Janshakti Party president
Chirag Paswan said his party would not support any legislation which is not in
the interest of the common people. Both are BJP’s allies in Bihar and had
supported the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.Union Minority Affairs
Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said there is “no plan for a nationwide NRC” and
that “there has so far been no discussion on the matter at any level of
government.”Speaking to The Indian Express, Naqvi added: “NRC is limited to
Assam. There is no plan of NRC in any other part of the country. You are

CAA protest: Death toll rises to 11 in UP as violence grips agitation
At least 11 people, including an 8-year-old boy, have lost their lives
in Uttar Pradesh as the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act turned
violent in the state, officials said on Saturday. 4 deaths were reported from
Meerut district, while the boy lost his life in a stampede in Varanasi when a
violent mob was being chased by police personnel, they said. Lucknow, Kanpur,
Gorakhpur, Meerut and Sambhal were some of the areas that were worst-hit by the
anti-CAA protests. Mobile internet services remain suspended in Aligarh, Mau,
Azamgarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr,
Sambhal and Allahabad in view of the protests against the Citizenship Amendment
Act. Stone-pelting or more serious clashes with police were also reported from
Bhadohi, Bahraich, Amroha, Farurukhabad, Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur,

Lucknow: A journalist with The Hindu newspaper was picked up by the
Lucknow police from a city restaurant, detained for over two hours at a police
station and then a police post, and finally released after harrowing moments
where he was accused of conspiracy in Lucknow violence against the Citizenship
Amendment Act on Thursday that saw one person killed.Omar Rashid is the Uttar
Pradesh correspondent for The Hindu newspaper, and says he was busy with filing
his story at a local restaurant along with a friend when the police arrived.
"I was using someone's WiFi in the hotel. Suddenly about four to five
people in plain clothes came and they started interrogating my friend. They asked
him to identify himself. The asked me to identify myself. They then put him in
a jeep and ask me to also come along. I identified myself as a journalist and
told them who I am. They insisted I went with them," Omar Rashid said in
an interview to NDTV.
15 Arrested For Citizenship Law Violence In Old Delhi, Detained Minors
Released
New Delhi: 15 people have been arrested in connection with Friday's
violence in Old Delhi during a protest against the new citizenship law, the
police said today. The remaining people, of the nearly 40 who were detained in
clashes, have been released. Eight of those detained by the police were minors
aged between 14 and 15 years. All the minors have been released only after
their parents went to the police station to collect them.NDTV
40 detained over violent protest in Delhi's Daryaganj; 42, including 8
cops, injured
New Delhi:Delhi Police detained 40 people in connection with a violent
protest in Daryaganj here on Friday, officials said. According to the police,
the protesters set ablaze a private car parked at Subhash Marg, Daryaganj. The
fire was immediately doused with water and fire extinguishers.The Delhi Police
resorted to lathicharge and used water cannon to disperse protesters as
violence marked a march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Friday with
stones being hurled on security personnel."Hours after the violent protest
near Delhi Gate, around 42 injured people, including eight policemen, got

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad surrendered before the Delhi Police
and was taken into custody from outside Delhi’s Jama Masjid in the wee hours of
Saturday. On Friday, Azad held protests against the contentious Citizenship
(Amendment) Act despite no permission and gave cops the slip in Delhi’s Jama
Masjid.“He surrendered before the police at Gate No. 1 and is being taken to
the Crime Branch’s office have for further investigation,” a police officer

I&B issues second advisory to TV channels to refrain from promoting
‘anti-national attitudes’
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Friday issued a second
advisory to all private television channels asking them to refrain from
broadcasting content that is “likely to instigate violence or which promotes
anti-national attitudes”. The last advisory issued by the ministry was on
December 11 after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha and

because he did not want to meet Democrat Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, a known
critic of India's stand on Kashmir. Government officials said that since Ms
