Video Suggests UP Cop Opened Fire
In Kanpur, Contrary To "No Police Firing" Claim
Lucknow: In large-scale violence that has gripped many parts of Uttar
Pradesh since Thursday over the citizenship law protests, fifteen people have
died, many of them from bullet injuries . But the state police continues to
maintain that it has not fired a single bullet at protesters anywhere. Now,
evidence that belies this claim has emerged from Kanpur where there were
clashes between the police and protesters yesterday.A day after protesters
clashed with the police in Uttar Pradesh over the contentious citizenship law,
a video has emerged in which a policeman in Kanpur can be seen opening fire
with his revolver. The video comes even as Uttar Pradesh Police maintains that
that none of the people who died in the state after the protests were killed in
police firing. In the video, the policeman, wearing a safety jacket and a
helmet, can be seen walking at the site of the clashes with a revolver and
baton. He can be seen walking to a corner and opening fire.ndtv

their claims. The video, believed to have been shot in Kanpur, also show’s media’s
complicity as one voice is heard saying, “Camera hata do, inko chalane do goli
(Shut the camera, let them fire bullets).”The video, according to NDTV, was
from Kanpur, which saw a large-scale protests against the Citizenship Act in

Citizenship Act protests: CAA,
NRC India’s ‘internal issues’ but worrisome that ‘uncertainty’ could affect
neighbours, says Bangladesh Foreign Minister
Amid the massive protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act across
the country, Bangladesh Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen said that CAA and NRC
are India’s “internal issues”, but voiced concern that any “uncertainty” in the
country is likely to affect its neighbours.“CAB (now Citizenship Amendment Act)
and NRC are internal issues of India. Indian government assured us again and
again that these are their domestic issues, they are doing it because of legal
and other reasons,” Momen told PTI in Dhaka.Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh on
Sunday denied permission to the delegation of Trinamool Congress leaders who
were planning to visit the families of those killed in the anti-Citizenship
Amendment Act protests in the state. Led by senior party leader Dinesh Trivedi,
the delegation, including MPs Pratima Mondal, Mohammad Nadimul Haque and Abir
Biswas, was expected to reach Lucknow on Sunday. On the other hand, the BJP on
Saturday announced it will run a nationwide campaign in the next 10 days to
“expose” the “conspiracy” of Congress, TMC and Left parties to “spread hatred
and violence” in the country over Citizenship Act. The party’s national general
secretary Bhupinder Yadav said the party will go door-to-door as part of its

Citizenship law stir: Foreign
tourists anxious, Indians prefer overseas destinations
KOLKATA:Over the past few days, countries such as US, UK, Canada, UAE
and Australia among others have issued advisories, asking travellers to India,
especially to the northeast, to be on guard. As protests against the amended
Citizenship Act continue to rage in parts of the country, tourism industry has
taken a hit this holiday season, with several nations deeming India as an
unsafe travel destination.Stakeholders of the country’s tourism industry
maintained that many domestic tourists were also looking to spend their winter
vacations abroad, in view of the law-and- order situation.“We have been getting
apprehensive calls from overseas tourists who wanted to know about the ground
situation in the country, having read media reports. There had been no major
cancellations or rescheduling as of now,” Jyoti Mayal, the president of Travel
Agents Association of India, told PTI.The industry, which had not seen a
significant rise in the number of visitors earlier this year, is skeptical that
the ongoing protests would hit harder.PTI
Gandhi’s great-grandson joins
wave of protest at law isolating India’s Muslims
25,000 protesters gathered in
Mewat, in the Indian state of Haryana, to begin the historic 5-mile walk to
Ghasera village. It was here, 72 years ago, that Mahatma Gandhi made the same
journey during the turmoil of partition, visiting the area with the promise of
a dignified life for local Muslims. While millions have retraced Gandhi’s steps
before, this time felt different. Against the backdrop of a new Citizenship
(Amendment) Act (CAA) passed by the Indian parliament last week, which many
believe is openly discriminatory against Muslims and relegates them to
second-class citizens, honouring Gandhi’s words of religious harmony and
reconciliation felt like a powerful political statement. “Mewat has witnessed
many protests, but this is the biggest in our life,” resident Shahzad Khan told
local media. As India has seen some of the biggest protests in four decades, the
image and legacy of Gandhi, known as the “father of India” for his role in
independence, has been omnipresent. Across India people have voiced fears that
the new act, passed by prime minister Narendra Modi’s rightwing, Hindu
nationalist, BJP government, risks destroying the secular, pluralistic India
that Gandhi dedicated his life to building. It was no accident that on the same
day that protesters marched in Mewat last week, thousands of demonstrators
gathered at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, the spot from which Gandhi gave his
famous “Quit India” speech to the British government in 1942.Among the millions
who have taken to the streets defending Gandhi’s inclusive vision of India has
been Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Arun Gandhi. “For the first time in
independent India,” said Tushar Gandhi, “laws or systems are being attempted to
be imposed which discriminate, which differentiate, on the basis of religion.”
