Centre Extends Deadline To Update Assam
Citizens' List NRC To July 31
New Delhi:Centre has extended the deadline to
complete the ongoing exercise for updating the National Register of Citizens or
NRC in Assam by one more month to July 30. The process had been extended in
December last year by 6 months to June 30.In a notification, the Registrar
General of India said the decision was taken as the exercise launched to
identify legal residents of Assam, could not be completed within the current
deadline.Over one lakh people were excluded from the NRC, a draft list showed
earlier this week. The additional draft exclusion list published on Wednesday named
1.02 lakh people whose names figured in the draft citizens' list that was
released in July last year. These names were subsequently found ineligible for
inclusion. The Assam citizens' list is being updated for the first time since
1951 to account for illegal migration into Assam from neighbouring Bangladesh.
The people who have been excluded will be informed individually through letters
to be delivered at their residential addresses. The list of names dropped in
the latest draft can be accessed on the National Register of Citizens' website.
The excluded people will have the chance to file their claims at the designated
NRC help centres by July 11.Over 40 lakh people were not named in the draft
citizens' list published on July 30 last year, creating a huge controversy.
Lakhs of them have applied for re-verification. The draft list included the
names of 2.9 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applications. NRC in
Assam is being updated under the Supreme Court's monitoring.A person whose name
is not part of NRC can approach any such tribunal with a certified copy of the
rejection order received from NRC authorities along with the grounds for
appeal.ndtv
Nagaland set to begin its variant of NRC from
July 10
guwahati:Nagaland has decided to start a
variant of National Register of Citizens (NRC) that neighbouring Assam is
updating.On Saturday, Nagaland’s Home Commissioner R. Ramakrishnan issued a
notification for setting up of the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of
Nagaland (RIIN) aimed at preparing a master list of all indigenous peoples and
checking the issuance of fake indigenous inhabitant certificates.Designated
teams would fan out to cover each village and urban ward from July 10, less
than a month before Assam is scheduled to publish the final NRC.To be monitored
by the Home Commissioner, Nagaland’s exercise for collecting information on
locals and non-locals has a 60-day deadline. RIIN, according to Ramakrishnan,
will be prepared after an extensive survey with the help of a village-wise and
ward-wise list of indigenous inhabitants based on official records. It will be
prepared under the supervision of each district administration.State govt,
officials said, had directed all DCs to ensure that the teams were constituted
by name within a week of the publication of the notification, make the
information about the teams public, and communicate to the village council
chairmen,Village Development Board secretaries, ward authorities, tribal hohos,
church authorities, and NGOs.Hoho is the apex body of each Naga group. Survey teams
have been instructed to visit each house and make a list of indigenous
inhabitants living there. Each family member will be listed in the village of
their original residence and mention will be made of any member living
elsewhere. The format for making the list will mention “permanent residence and
present residence” separately. Aadhaar number, wherever available, will also be
recorded. The provisional lists will then be published in the villages and wards
and also on the websites of the district and the State government on Sept.11.Time
will be given till October 10 for any claims and objections after the
publication of the provisional lists.DCs will then settle the claims and
objections based on official records and evidence produced.List will be

PM reminds people of Emergency; says don't
take democracy for granted
New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Sunday reminded
people of the Emergency and urged them not to take democracy "for
granted", saying in day-to-day life, it is difficult to savour the joy of
democratic rights, unless they are snatched away. In his first 'Mann ki Baat'
monthly radio address after returning to power, he said everyday when one gets
to eat food on time, one doesn't realize what hunger pangs are.
"Similarly, in day-to-day life, it is difficult to savour the joy of
democratic rights, unless they are snatched away.During Emergency, every citizen
of the country had started getting the feeling that something that belonged to
him had been snatched away. If what was snatched had never been enjoyed by that
person, ever, it had to eventually precipitate into a painful inner
agony," he said. PM reminded people that in order to ensure smooth conduct
of the social order, a constitution is required. "Laws and rules are
necessary, rights and duties should be part of due discourse," he said.

Domestic Violence Act: 'Divorced Wife'
Entitled To Execute Orders Granted Prior To Decree Of Divorce: Calcutta HC
Calcutta High Court has held that a divorced
wife who got an order of maintenance and other relief under Domestic Violence
Act [DV Act] prior to the decree of divorce is entitled to execute the same if
she is unable to maintain herself and she has not remarried and for other
reasons. In Krishnendu Das Thakur vs. State of West Bengal, Justice Madhumati
Mitra considered these two important legal issues:Whether the wife is required
to be continued in domestic relationship to execute an order of maintenance
already granted in her favour under the provision of the Protection of Women
from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.[DV Act]?Whether change of marital status of
the wife by a decree of divorce can be considered to be a change in
circumstances as mentioned in Section 25(2) of the Act?. The contention put
forth in this case was that, after the decree of the divorce, the wife ceased
to be an aggrieved person as envisaged in the provisions of Section 2(a) of the
Domestic Violence Act. After the decree of the divorce the opposite party
cannot be considered to be an aggrieved person or in domestic relationship with
the 'husband', it was argued.livelaw.in
Mother of baby Modi wants a new name for her
son — Aftab
In the days following May 23, when BJP
returned to power riding on another Narendra Modi wave, came a breezy news from
a village in Gonda, UP: of a Muslim woman who had named her child — “born on
the day of the election results” — ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’.Less than a month
later, sitting in her unplastered, two-storey house in Parsapur Mahraur
village, Mehnaz Begum, 25, says she regrets naming her child that, and blames
her journalist cousin for allegedly convincing her to pull off the ‘fraud’. The
child, it now turns out, was born on May 12, not 23, as Mehnaz declared in an
affidavit addressed to DM and submitted to Assistant Development Officer
(Panchayat) Ghanshyam Pandey. Pandey confirms that he received Mehnaz’s affidavit
with the child’s name as ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’ and that he forwarded it to
DMO.“ I had no idea it would become such a big issue. I fell for what my aunt’s
son told me,” Mehnaz says. She alleges her first cousin, Mushtaq Ahmed, a
journalist with Hindi daily Hindustan in Gonda, not just convinced her to name
the child after Modi but also spread the word that the child was born on May
23. On May 25, Hindustan’s Lucknow edition carried a story on Mehnaz and baby
‘Modi’ on page 12, with Ahmed sharing the byline with Bureau Chief Qamar
Abbas.“Mushtaq made me mug up a short speech and tell mediapersons that my son
was born on May 23 and that I have decided to name him after the Prime
Minister. I am illiterate and don’t even know much about Modi,”says Mehnaz as
neighbours gather at her house.KK Upadhyay, who was Editor, Hindustan (Lucknow),
when the story was published, said, “We got the story from the village and
published it. The story is not false and the child’s name remains the same. The
story was verified and mother later told all mediapersons what she told us. Her
story was published in all papers the same day.” Teervijay Singh, who has been
appointed Editor, refused to comment, saying he would take charge only in
July.Mehnaz’s husband Mohd Mushtaq Ahmed works as a mason in Dubai and last
came home in Nov.2018. Mehnaz adds, “Only the media visited us, took
photographs, interviewed us and left. They stopped visiting us after the issue
about my son’s date of birth came up,” she says, asking the neighbours to leave
her alone.Sitting at a tea shop with others, Mehnaz’s father-in-law Mohd Idris,
blames his daughter-in-law and her cousin for the controversy. indianexpress

Nusrat Jahan has done big crime, her marriage
not valid under Islam: Cleric
New Delhi:Mufti Mukarram Ahmed, Shahi Imam,
Fatehpuri Masjid on Sunday said TMC MP Nusrat Jahan's marriage with a Jain
businessman is not valid as per Islamic norms. This comes after a fatwa was
issued to Jahan after she appeared in Parliament wearing 'sindoor'. Mukarram
said, "I don't know what is mentioned in the fatwa, but Islam does not
allow 'Sindoor'. It's not Muslim culture... It's not a marriage. It looks more
like a relation to show off. Both Muslims and Jains won't consider it a
marriage. She is no more a Jain or a Muslim. She has done a big crime and she
should not have done it." The newly-elected TMC MP's marriage with a Jain
businessman and her wearing a sindoor and bangles became a subject matter of
controversy on Saturday, with a Muslim cleric calling out Jahan over "un-Islamic"
practices."Islam says a Muslim can marry only a Muslim. I have got to know
that Nusrat is a film actor and people in the cinema do not care about
religious practices. They do what they have to," said Mufti Asad Quasmi of

"Damaged My Relationship With
Allah": Actress Zaira Wasim Quits Films
Mumbai: National Award-winning actor Zaira Wasim on Sunday announced
her "disassociation" from the field of acting, saying she was not
happy with the line of work as it interfered with her faith and religion. In a
detailed post on her Facebook page, which she later shared across all social
media platforms, Kashmiri-born Dangal fame star said she realised "though
I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here"."5 years ago I made a
decision that changed my life forever. As I stepped my foot in Bollywood, it
opened doors of massive popularity for me. I started to become the prime
candidate of public attention, I was projected as the gospel of the idea of
success and was often identified as a role model for the youth."However,
that's never something that I set out to do or become, especially with regards
to my ideas of success and failure, which I had just started to explore and
understand," Wasim said in the lengthy post."This field indeed
brought a lot of love, support, and applause my way, but what it also did was
to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned
out of imaan (faith). While I continued to work in an environment that
consistently interfered with my imaan, my relationship with my religion was
threatened," 18-year-old actor said.Zaira Wasim said as she continued to
"ignorantly pass through" while trying to convince herself that what
she was doing was okay and was not really affecting her, "I lost all the
'Barakah'' (blessing) from my life"."I was constantly battling with
my soul to reconcile my thoughts and instincts to fix a static picture of my
imaan and I failed miserably, not just once but a hundred times..."Zaira
Wasim said she began to heavily rely upon Allah's mercy for help and guidance
instead of valuing her own believability. "I discovered my lack of
knowledge of the basic fundamentals of my religion and how my inability to
reinforce a change earlier was a result of confusing my heart's contentment and
wellbeing with strengthening and satisfying my own (shallow and worldly)
desires," she said.NDTV
