Modi, Imran briefly exchange pleasantries at
SCO Summit
New Delhi:After appearing to avoid each other
at more than half a dozen events during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
(SCO) Summit in the Kyrgyzstan capital of Bishkek, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan briefly exchanged pleasantries on
Friday.People familiar with developments were quick to point out that there was
no “pull aside” or formal meeting between the two leaders, who have spoken on
phone and exchanged letters since Khan’s party won Pakistan’s general election
last year. Ahead of the SCO Summit, Indian officials had insisted that there
would be no formal meeting between Modi and Khan at Bishkek. This didn’t prevent
Pakistani side from making overtures for an engagement. India’s lack of desire
to engage was signalled by Modi on Thursday, when he said Pakistan is yet to
act on India’s concerns and create an atmosphere free of terrorism. On Thursday
and Friday, Modi and Khan were together at two photo ops, a concert, a dinner
hosted by the Kyrgyz president, a formal lunch, and two sessions of the SCO
leaders but chose not to engage. While six of the eight visiting SCO leaders
were hosted at Ala Archa State Residence, the official home of the Kyrgyz
president, Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin opted to stay at other
venues.HT
India hasn’t come out of its poll mindset,
Pakistan will engage on ‘basis of equality’, says Qureshi
New Delhi :Asserting that Pakistan would hold
talks with India on the “basis of equality” and in a “dignified manner”,
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said the ball was in India’s court to
engage with Islamabad and resolve all outstanding issues. “So India has to make
this decision, we are neither in haste nor troubled. When India prepares
itself, it would find us prepared, but we will hold talks on the basis of
equality, in a dignified manner,” Qureshi told Geo News on the sidelines of SCO
Summit. When asked about the demand by some people that Pakistan should not
repeatedly invite India for talks, Qureshi said, “Neither we need to run after
anyone, nor we need to demonstrate stubbornness. Pakistan’s approach is very
realistic and well thought-out.” Pakistan foreign minister also accused the
Indian government of being in the “election mindset” to keep their “vote bank
intact”. “India has not come out of its election mindset and the extreme
position they had taken to influence their constituency and to keep their vote
bank intact. It is still confined in that,” Qureshi said.Qureshi was the first
to confirm on Friday that PM Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran
Khan exchanged pleasantries and a handshake in the leaders’ lounge. Indianexpress
India must assure palestinians of unstinting
support, re-look at its pro-Israel decision: Jamaat
New Delhi:Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has denounced India’s vote in favour of Israel and
against Palestine at the United Nations, saying that its vote favouring Israel
“will be construed as a departure for India from its stated decades old policy
of supporting the Palestinian cause.”Syed Sadatullah Husaini, National
President of Jamaat, has called upon the government of India to assure the
Palestinians of its unstinting support. “We express our disappointment at the
stand taken by the government of India in favor of Israel in UN Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC), over Israel’s objection to grant consultative status
to a Palestinian human rights NGO. This positive vote favoring Israel will be
construed as a departure for India from its stated decades old policy of
supporting the Palestinian cause. This shift in our approach towards endorsing
Israeli hardline policy aimed at crushing all voices of dissent and criticism
that expose Israel’s continued occupation and human rights abuses will be a
huge setback for the Palestinians who bank on India for supporting its struggle
for an independent state,” said Husaini in a press statement. In what could be
seen as the first sign of departure from its decades-old stand on Palestine,
India voted in favour of Israel against a Palestinian human rights body that
was seeking observer’s status at UN. The voting took place at the UN on June 6.JIH
leader said that India’s support for Israel may affect India-Arab economic
relations and appealed to Indian government to assure Palestinians of its
continued unstinted support.“It may also hamper our improving ties with
oil-rich Arab countries. The govt of India must assure Palestinians of its
continued unstinted support and re-look at its decision to support Israel in
diplomatic and international forums. India has always fought imperialist powers
and supported countries in their struggle against imperialism and apartheid,”
said Husaini. He also appealed to people of India to support the just cause of
Palestinians. India Tomorrow

Indian Hospice, a unique and historic monument in the heart of Jerusalem, which
has become a symbol of India's heritage and presence in the third holiest city
for Muslims going back to over 800 years.Abbas said the Ansari family's
presence in the old city of Jerusalem reflects the strong traditional ties
between Indian and Palestinian people. He called upon for strengthening
people-to-people contact between the two sides. Abbas plans to send Palestinian
Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh to India soon to boost tourist inflows from
there which can contribute to strong bonding between the two people.

appreciated the role played by the Ansari family in strengthening
Indo-Palestine ties. Indian hospice has been under the direct supervision of a
representative from India since 1924. Ansari's father, Sheikh Nazir Hassan
Ansari, was appointed the first Sheikh of the Hospice from whom the mantle

NIA arrests one more Coimbatore resident in
IS- case; Muslim outfits say NIA targeting Muslims
Coimbatore: NIA arrested another Coimbatore
resident, Sheik Hidayathullah, 38, in an IS-related case linked to Easter
attacks in Sri Lanka.Earlier his associate, Muhammed Azharudheen, a Facebook
friend of Zahran Hashim, Sri Lanka’s attack mastermind, was arrested by the
NIA.Hidayathullah was detained along with 4 others 2 days ago. The accused is
also a former member of the SIMI, an NIA official said. NIA had registered a
case on May 30 against 6 accused for propagating IS ideology on social media
with the intention of recruiting vulnerable youth for carrying out attacks in
South India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.On June 12, the NIA conducted
searches at 7 locations in Coimbatore and incriminating material including
books and documents were seized from the houses and work places of the accused,
the NIA said.He will be produced before the Special Court for NIA cases in
Ernakulam seeking his custody. The Coimbatore City police on Friday detained 3
persons for propagating IS ideology on social media platforms and allegedly
planning to conduct attacks in the city. On Thursday, Mohammed Hussain from
Ukkadam, A. Shajahan from Anbu Nagar and Sheik Safiullah from Karumbukkadai
were booked under UAPA, said a release issued by the police. On Friday, various
Muslim outfits met Sumit Sharan, Commissioner of Police, and submitted a

Kazhagam, Popular Front of India and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, met with the
Commissioner.
Coimbatore: Ukkadam residents upset over
locality being labelled IS sympathizers’ hideout
Coimbatore:Upset with their area being in the
news for all wrong reasons in recent years, residents of Ukkadam see it as a
move to suppress the minority community in the city. The residents fumed over
their locality being labelled as a hideout for IS sympathizers. “It took a lot
of time to resume the cordial relationship between Hindus and Muslims in the
area after 1998 bomb blast. It is only in the recent times, people have started
coming to Ukkadam region without any hesitation. But the recent police actions
could affect the relationship. Because of the continuous raids both by NIA and
local police, people living in the locality are being looked down upon,” said a
resident on condition of anonymity.“Some outsiders are reluctant to come to
Ukkadam region as it is being treated as a hub for IS sympathizers. They
hesitate to speak with us once they know that we are from Ukkadam,” he said.
Another resident said searches and picking up residents for inquiry have been
exaggerated this time both by the city police and NIA. Coordinator of Jamaat-e-Islami
Hind K Raja Hussein said this time, officials have entered the houses during
odd-hours and disturbed the normal life of the public. The raids have created a
tense situation in the city and brought a bad opinion among the public, he
added.Hinting that there could be possible political influence in the issue, he
said it might be a move to suppress the minority community.TOI

UP: Sans burial ground, Muslims in this
'village of graves’ bury their dead inside homes
Lucknow:Agra's name is synonymous with Taj
Mahal, the mausoleum dedicated to eternal love. Ironically, in its backyard,
families are forced to bury their dead in their homes due to the lack of a
burial ground. In the small village ‘Chhah Pokhar’ in Kirawali tehsil of
Achnera block, some 30 km away from proper Agra along Agra-Jaipur Highway,
there are close to 50 Muslim families. Whenever anyone dies in a Muslim family
in the ‘village of graves', the person is buried in his own house. It is not a
tradition but a compulsion, say the villagers. The village has over 50 Muslim
families with a population of over 300 but there is no identified permanent
place to bury the dead. Majority of these Muslim families are landless and the
menfolk work as labourers in the city. Those who have land or farms can afford
to bury their dead in the cities.Noor Mohammad, a resident of Chhah Pokhar,
lamented: “I have my wife and daughter buried in my house itself."As per
local sources, in many houses, the graves are adjacent to the kitchen, or
bedrooms. Women are sometimes forced to cook beside a grave. Some graves are
located right outside the main entrance of the houses. “The bigger the
families, the more the graves in the house,” says Firoz, another
villager. Moreover, as the corpses decompose in the graves, the families have to
bear the stench as well as the threat of contamination, in addition to the
mental trauma and social ostracisation. The residents of adjoining villages
(mainly dominated by Nishads) and the Hindu community, avoid visiting the
Muslim locality in the village.newindianexpress
National Education Policy: Student Body SIO
Demands Extension For Filing Suggestions
New Delhi: Students Islamic Organisation or
SIO, a student body, demanded Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to
extend the deadline for filing suggestions towards the recently released draft
National Education Policy (NEP). The draft policy is prepared by Dr K
Kasturirangan Commission and government invited the public and civil society
participants to submit their inputs by July 1. The organisation had also asked
the Union Government to translate and release the NEP draft in other non-Hindi
state languages as well so as to give the Indian citizens in those states an
equal opportunity to take part in the process."Given that the document is
almost 500 pages long and the time given to the public to review, prepare and
submit their feedback and suggestions is less than a month, it is not right of
the Union Government to serve the notice to the public at such short
notice," Labeed Shafi, National President, SIO said. "The importance and implication of
NEP 2019 for the nation as a whole is tremendous and it will be creating
lasting impact. Hence the government is required to give public appropriate
time to peruse and prepare their response," Shafi added.Noting further
that NEP 2019 draft has only be released in Hindi and English, Shafi added that
given the important of the document, Union Government should translate and
release NEP 2019 draft in other non-Hindi state languages as well so as to give
the Indian citizens in those states an equal opportunity to take part in the
process. SIO will be shortly writing to the MHRD to address these issues, Shafi

Congress Government Revises Rajasthan
Textbooks, Removes Right-Wing Content
Jaipur: Rajasthan board of secondary education
(RBSE) textbooks, rewritten under the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP in 2017 to
glorify the Narendra Modi government and enforce its Hindutva ideology, have
been revised once again under the state’s Congress government. While the new
textbooks have not eliminated all mentions of the Modi government, several
controversial sections have been dropped or rewritten. These include the parts
on demonetisation, Vinayak Savarkar, battle of Haldighati, Article 370, a
uniform civil code, the ‘appeasement’ of the minorities, religious conversions
and right-wing Hindu nationalist groups. The revised textbooks have removed
demonetisation from the chapter on corruption for Class 12 political science
students. Earlier, textbook said demonetisation is known as ‘kale dhan ki safai
(cleaning black money)’ in the history of economics. It also said that this was
a ‘historical decision’ by the Modi government to bring back black money from
abroad, fight corruption, stop the financing of terrorist organisations and
curb the usage of black money in elections. Savarkar, a RSS ideologue who was
given a lot of space in the previous textbooks and called ‘Veer’ or ‘the brave
one’, is now referred to by his given name, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The new
textbook has also omitted an introductory paragraph on Savarkar. Haldighati
battle and the pro-Maharana Pratap narrative used by top BJP leaders time and
again has been meticulously dealt with in the revised textbooks. While the
previous textbooks had stated that Maharana Pratap had an edge in the battle, new
textbooks have attempted to strike a balance by not mentioning who had an upper
hand and explaining why the battle cannot be called a religious war.The chapter
on casteism and communalism in Class 12 political science textbook has
undergone major changes. The Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing Hindu nationalist
political organisation, has been added to the list of other political outfits
that propagate separation for vested interests. Earlier, only Muslim
organisations like Jamaat-e-Islam, MIM and the SIMI were mentioned. thewire
AMU students union remove 'dharna site' board
from the campus
A couple of hours after the AMU designated the
varsity's duck point as a "dharna site" by putting a board there,
members of the Students' union members removed the same on the plea that it was
a "symbol of tyranny".The university authorities had designated the
dharma site after Allahabad high court restrained protests at the varsity's
main gate and within 100 meters of the administrative block and the vice
chancellor lodge. The president of students' union uploaded photographs of
students removing the board on social media claiming that the symbol of tyranny
had been removed from the campus. In his Facebook post, president Salman Imtiaz
said that AMU authorities cannot impose a place of protest for the students. He
said, "I, as the president of AMUSU and I have already rejected this
authoritarianism of the university officials. We have the legitimate right to
question the university authorities in a peaceful manner, whenever anti-student
policies are framed or corrupt practices are found". He further added that
protests in a democratic country are a legitimate right and powers that be
cannot act in a tyrannical manner. Talking to TOI, Imtiaz, said that several
protests have been held in the campus in a peaceful manner, but the
administrative authorities portray the current protest as an
"obstruction" in academic and administrative functioning, which is
absolutely incorrect. AMUSU's Vice President Hamza Sufyan said, "We are
not satisfied with the decision of administrative authorities designating the
dharna site in the campus. To protest is our fundamental right and we can do it
wherever we want". He added that they will file a review petition in the
court and if it is not accepted, they would challenge the HC order in the SC. TOI

Malaysian Muslim NGOs launch '1m signatures'
campaign to back Dr M on Zakir Naik
Malaysian Islamic Organisation of Consultative
Council (Mapim) and other Muslim NGOs have launched a one million signatures
campaign to support Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on the extradition of Zakir
Naik. Mapim's president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the campaign is for Mahathir
not to cave in to pressure from certain quarters.“Malaysian government has
resisted so far and not bowed to pressure from India and certain quarters in
Malaysia...“However, the political climate of late has been worrying.“So we
decided to state our stand and support the government, failing which, Islam
would continue to be a tool for those deliberately stirring religious hate,” he
told a press conference, according to Harian Metro. Therefore, Mohd Azmi urged
Muslims in Malaysia to unite in defence of the government's right not to
extradite Zakir. He said as a Muslim intellectual acknowledged all over the
world, Zakir's lectures do not incite or belittle other religions as alleged by
certain quarters. He is also convinced that Zakir would not be accorded a fair
trial in India, where he is sought for alleged money laundering.Mohd Azmi said
despite the preacher having explained the sources of the funds and financial
procedures numerous times, India is still seeking his extradition.“All
documents on the flow of funds and payment of taxes have been submitted to the
relevant authorities in India. There is also pressure from within Malaysia from
certain social activists, media organisations and politicians for the govt to
expedite the extradition process.malaysiakini

Bengaluru: Around 23,000 complaints had been
filed against Md Mansoor Khan, founder-owner of I Monetary Advisory (IMA) and
its officials by Thursday evening and estimates of the money swindled in the
ponzi scam targeted at Muslim investors, ballooned to over Rs 1,500 crore. IMA
proprietor, the prime accused, flew out of the country last Saturday, June 8, a
day before the first complaint was filed against him, police sources told TOI .
Bengaluru city police have issued a lookout notice for Khan. All complaints so
far have been attached to the first complaint made by Khalid Ahmed, Mansoor's
close friend and business partner, sources said, who accused Mansoor of
cheating him of Rs 4.8 crore. Barely 24 hours after Khalid's complaint, an
audio clip, purportedly of Khan claiming he was on the verge of committing
suicide , was widely circulated on WhatsApp. The clip blew the lid off the scam
and thousands of investors rushed to Commercial Street police to file
complaints. By then, Khan was long gone, police said. "Khan was alone when
he cleared immigration around 6.40pm. His flight to Dubai took off at
8.45pm," sources in state secretariat said. "His associates recalled
how Khan was tense since central agencies were communicating with the state,
prodding why no action had been taken against him and his firm. Earlier on

Iran renews ultimatum over nuclear deal amid
tanker tensions
Iran will continue scaling back compliance
with its commitments under the nuclear deal unless other signatories show
"positive signals", the Iranian president told a meeting of Russian,
Chinese and other Asian leaders in Tajikistan.Iran stopped complying in May
with some commitments in a 2015 nuclear deal that was agreed with global
powers, a year after the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord
and tightened sanctions.Tehran said in May that Iran would start enriching
uranium at a higher level unless world powers protected its economy from US
sanctions within 60 days. "Obviously, Iran cannot stick to this agreement
unilaterally,"President Hassan Rouhani told the Conference on Interaction
and Confidence Building Measures in Asia."It is necessary that all the
sides of this agreement contribute to restoring it," he said, adding that
Iran needed to see "positive signals" from other signatories to the
pact, which include Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. He did not give
details on what actions Iran would take or say what positive signals Tehran
wanted to see.France and other European signatories to the deal, which aimed to
curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, have said they wanted to save it, but many of
their companies have cancelled deals with Tehran under financial pressure from US.Western
powers have accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran
denies, saying it wants nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.aljazeera
UK: Corbyn says no evidence of Iran role in
attacks
The leader of Britain’s opposition has said
there is no “credible evidence” that Iran was responsible for attacks on two
oil tankers on Friday, urging the government to refrain from escalating
tensions in the region, as reported by Anadolu Agency. Labour party leader
Jeremy Corbyn said late Friday that the government’s response risked increasing
the threat of war with Iran following the foreign office’s conclusion that Iran
is almost certainly behind the attacks. “Britain should act to ease tensions in
Gulf, not fuel a military escalation that began with US withdrawal from the
Iran nuclear agreement,” Corbyn said on Twitter, warning that “without credible
evidence about the tanker attacks, the government’s rhetoric will only increase
the threat of war.”middleeastmonitor
Conservative Muslim leader compares Boris
Johnson to Adolf Hitler
Boris Johnson has been compared to Adolf
Hitler by the leader of a Conservative Muslim Forum.Mohammed Amin, chairman of
the forum, said he would quit the Conservative Party after more than 3 decades
as a member if Mr Johnson was chosen as the next Tory leader. His comments come
after the former Foreign Secretary became the frontrunner in the Conservative
leadership race, winning the backing of 114 MPs.Asked about Mr Johnson’s
popularity, Mr Amin told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There are many
horrible people who have been popular. Popularity is not the test. The test is,
is this person sufficiently moral to be prime minister, and I believe he fails
that test.”He added: “A lot of Germans thought that Hitler was the right man
for them.”When it was put to him that such a comparison was shocking, Amin
said: “Yes. I am not saying Boris Johnson wants to send people to the gas
chamber, clearly he doesn’t. He’s a buffoon.“But he, as far as I’m concerned,
has insufficient concern about the nature of truth for me to ever be a member
of a party that he leads.” He said: “I am not prepared to be a member of a
party that chooses him as its leader. I would resign after 36 years.”Amin went
on:“We don’t expect our politicians, our prime ministers, to be saints. But we
do require a basic level of morality and integrity.” Yahoo News

against dozens of former officials accused of graft. Al Waleed Sayed Ahmed made
the announcement on Saturday, two months after the military overthrew and
arrested al-Bashir following mass protests against his 30-year rule. The former
president "will appear in court next week following charges of corruption
and possessing foreign currency," Ahmed said, without specifying a date.
The trial referral would be made after a one-week period for objections
expires, Ahmed said. He added that 41 other former officials were under
investigation for corruption. He did not name the others accused but said most
of the charges were related to "possession of land".Ahmed's
announcement came days after the official SUNA news agency said al-Bashir faced
several charges, including "possessing foreign funds, acquiring suspected
and illegal wealth" as well as ordering a state of emergency in response
to protests in Feb. Al-Bashir, who has not been seen in public since his
arrest, had already been charged in May with incitement and involvement in the
killing of protesters. Prosecutors had also ordered his interrogation on
suspicion of money laundering and financing "terrorism". Shams, a
Sudanese protester, told Al Jazeera the move against al-Bashir was aimed at
"distracting" from the generals' recent bloody crackdown on a protest
camp outside the military headquarters in the country's capital, Khartoum. aljazeera
