New Delhi:Ahead of his meeting with PM Narendra Modi on the sidelines of G-20 summit
in Japan, US President Donald Trump today demanded the withdrawal of trade
tariffs by New Delhi, calling them “unacceptable.”Trump is known to make
comments on India’s tariff barriers in his speeches, and has even referred to
India as “tariff king”. India slapped higher duties on 28 US products this
month after Washington withdrew the long-standing trade privileges for New
Delhi under Generalized System of Preferences on June 1.“I look forward to
speaking with PM Modi about the fact that India, for years having put very high
Tariffs against US, just recently increased the Tariffs even further. This is
unacceptable and Tariffs must be withdrawn!” President Trump’s tweet read.Trump
and Modi are scheduled to hold a bilateral summit Friday in Osaka. Quoting Govt
sources, Reuters reported that India rejected Trump’s argument, saying the
tariffs were not that high compared to other developing countries. Trump’s

Washington: US Commission for International
Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has strongly condemned lynching of a Muslim man in
Jharkhand and called on the Govt to take concrete actions to prevent this kind
of violence and intimidation. Tabrez Ansari, was allegedly tied to a pole and
thrashed with sticks by a mob at Dhatkidih village in Jharkhand."We
condemn in the strongest terms this brutal murder,in which the perpetrators
reportedly forced Ansari to say Hindu chants as they beat him for hours,"
USCIRF chairman Tony Perkins said."We call on the Indian Govt to take
concrete actions that will prevent this kind of violence and intimidation by a
thorough investigation of Ansari's murder as well as the local police's
handling of the case," he said, adding, "Lack of accountability will
only encourage those who believe they can target religious minorities with
impunity."In its recent annual report, USCIRF again placed India on its
Tier 2 for engaging in or tolerating religious freedom violations that meet at
least one of the elements of the "systematic, ongoing, egregious"

New Delhi:Protests were held in various parts
of India following lynching of a Muslim man, with people demanding an end to
what they termed as "lynch terror". Tabrez Ansari was beaten to death
by a Hindu mob in Jharkhand on suspicion of theft, causing a public uproar. Protests
were planned in over 50 cities under the hashtag #JusticeForTabrez and
#IndiaAgainstLynch Terror.In New Delhi, scores of people, including university students
and activists, held a protest at Jantar Mantar close to the parliament house. Holding
placards and chanting slogans against the ruling BJP and PM Narendra Modi, the
protesters demanded an end to violence against Muslims."Violence against
Muslims has to stop," said one of the speakers at the protest site. "Govt
must understand that we will not tolerate this lynch terror anymore," he
added."It is a very scary situation for Muslims," Sana Maryam, a
protester, said. She alleged that the perpetrators of the violence have enjoyed
impunity. Another protester named Fatima, a university student, said: "We
the people of India have been living in peace and harmony since very long and
we have not been hostile to each other but after BJP Govt came to power things
have changed.""Efforts are being made to divide people in the name of
religion so that they fight each other and the real issues are not talked

2 Muslim men were allegedly assaulted by a mob
in Haryana’s Gurugram on the suspicion of smuggling beef. The incident took
place on Tuesday when a group of "cow protection unit" near Islampur
village intercepted two vehicles allegedly carrying "beef
consignment". Shathil Ahmad, a resident of Palwal district, and Tayaid
were caught by the mob and beaten black and blue, while two others managed to
escape. Later, the police reached the spot and arrested them, while their
atackers continued to roam freely."We have registered an FIR under various
sections of Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015,"
police said, adding the search for two others who fled the scene was
on.According to one Savita Kataria, who led the group, residents of the village

jail term, fine for violence
Bhopal: In a bid to crack down on cow
vigilantism, Congress Govt in MP has proposed
a jail term of 6 months to three years and a fine of Rs 25,000-50,000 for those
who engage in violence against anyone booked under the anti-cow slaughter
Act.Kamal Nath Govt cleared an amendment
to MP Gauvansh Vadh Pratishedh Adhiniyam, 2004 —anti-cow slaughter law passed
by previous BJP Govt— to include this provision. Additional Chief Secretary
(Animal Husbandry) said the punishment will increase to minimum one year and
maximum 5 years if a mob is involved in cow vigilantism. In case of repeat
offenders, the jail term will be doubled. The amendment also seeks to punish
those who abet cow vigilantism by providing a jail term of one to 3 years.
People who damage property of those charged under the anti-cow slaughter law

HC upholds Maharashtra’s Maratha quota, but
reduces it to 12-13%
Bombay High Court today upheld constitutional
validity of reservation for Maratha community in Govt jobs and education.A
division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre, however, said the
quota percentage should be reduced from 16% to 12 to 13%, as recommended by State
Backward Classes Commission. “We hold and declare that state Govt possesses
legislative competence to create a separate category of Socially and
Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) and grant reservation,” court said.“We,
however, have held that 16% should be reduced to 12 to 13% as recommended by
the commission,” bench said.The court was hearing a bunch of petitions
challenging Maharashtra Govt’s decision granting 16% reservation to the Maratha
community in Govt jobs and educational
institutions. On Nov.30, 2018, the state legislature passed a bill granting 16%
quota in education and Govt jobs for the Marathas, declared a socially and educationally

Govt to Extend Deadline for Feedback on
National Education Policy by One Month: HRD Minister
New Delhi:Centre today said it will extend
deadline for comments and suggestions on draft National Education Policy 2019
by one month. Earlier, the last date for the feedback was June 30.Replying to a
question in Rajya Sabha today, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that
“it is an important issue and there has been extensive discussion over the
policy for the last 4 years by the ministry” the minister said. The minister
said the central Govt will extend the date to get more suggestions on it.
Earlier, TMC MP Derek O'Brien raised the issue claiming that state Govt s have
not been consulted over the policy.Several students groups had also demanded
extension of the deadline for feedback. Students Islamic Organisation of India
(SIO) had written a letter to the goverment seeking extension of the deadline
and translation of the draft policy in some regional languages. Draft National

Guwahati:A minor girl in Assam''s Darrang
district committed suicide on Wednesday, with her relatives and members of a
students'' organization linking the incident to National Register of Citizens
(NRC), which is being updated across state.Relatives of Noor Nahar Begum, 14,
of Roumari chapori village said that she hanged herself with the dupatta she
was wearing."Her name was not included in the draft NRC published by Assam
Govt last year. However, she was sure that her name will appear in the final
NRC.Today, when Assam Govt published an additional draft list of exclusion,
Noor and her family took it to be final NRC. Noor took the extreme step after
her father went to NRC seva Kendra at Roumari and failed to find her name in
the list and told her this over the phone," one of the relatives said.The
family said it was not aware that the list published on Wednesday was not the
final NRC but a additional draft exclusion list and that non-inclusion of her
name in the list enhances her chance of inclusion of her name in the final NRC

1992-93 communal violence case: Man arrested
26 years after riots, trial set to begin
Mumbai :The trial in an incident of alleged
communal riots during 1992-93 in the city is set to begin 26 years later after
the arrest of an accused in Feb. Usman Mulla was arrested by the Byculla police
after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him for not appearing before
the court. 7 of his co-accused were acquitted in 2011 by the sessions court,
but the case against Mulla was separated and he was declared an absconding
accused. According to the prosecution, on Jan.10, 1993, a mob of over 100
people had gathered on Barrister Nath Pai Road on Dockyard Road and started
throwing stones and soda water bottles.It has been alleged that the police had
to resort to lathicharge to control the mob and subsequently, the situation was
brought under control after additional forces were called in. The mob, however,
damaged vehicles and shops and an FIR was registered against unknown
persons.The police had also claimed that the mob had fired bullets at their
personnel, but the court had subsequently held in 2011 that there is no
evidence to support that any weapon was recovered or seized from the accused.
In his bail application filed in Feb through advocate Shabnam Shaikh, Mulla
submitted that he was not aware of the pendency of the case, as no summons or

J-K bank case: I-T raids premises of ex

Jammu:Income Tax Department today conducted
searches into the business and residential premises of various prominent
businessmen and politicians in Srinagar including J&K’s former Finance
Minister AR Rather and his son Hilal Rather.Congress leader Janak Raj Gupta and
his brother Sneh Gupta’s premises were also raided. Janak Raj Gupta was the
political advisor to then J&K CM Ghulam Nabi Azad in 2007-08.Sources
attributed the ongoing IT raids to recently unearthed alleged irregularities
into the affairs of J&K Bank. They said the case pertains to alleged
misappropriation of loans taken from J&K Bank by Hilal and persons linked

Jammu: 11 students, that included nine girls,
of a private computer training institute were killed while seven others were
injured on Thursday in a road accident on Mughal Road in J&K’s Poonch
district.The students were on an excursion trip from Surankote tehsil in Poonch
district to Mughal road.Poonch deputy commissioner Rahul Yadav said, “Since
accident occurred on Shopian side, FIR has been registered there and it is
being investigated by the Shopian administration. However,children hailed from
Poonch district. We have not received their dead bodies as yet nor have they
been identified as yet. Reports say that 11 of them died in the tragic

Women who are exposed to high pollution levels
in India are at significantly higher risk of suffering from hypertension, warn
researchers.The research, published in the journal Epidemiology, studied 5,531

Iran's parliamentary speaker has warned the US
against violating the country's borders, cautioning such a move would draw a
"stronger" reaction than the downing of a US drone a week ago.In
comments carried by Iran's semiofficial Tasnim today, Speaker Ali Larijani said
the shootdown of American unmanned aerial vehicle was "a good experience
for them to avoid any aggression". "Iran's reaction will be stronger

UAE: ‘No evidence’ to blame any country for

UAE Foreign Minister, Abdullah Bin Zayed, said
that his country could not hold any country responsible for the recent attacks
on four oil tankers because of “insufficient information”.Bin Zayed said during

Egyptian regime threatened Morsi before his
death: report
Egypt's ex president Mohammed Morsi was
threatened by Egyptian officials days before he died, the Middle East Eye said.MEE
claimed that Morsi was pressured to surrender his legitimacy as the elected
president of Egypt and bow down to the regime of Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, but he
rejected. Morsi was told to disband the Muslim Brotherhood or "face the
consequences," the MEE said in the report. He refused to talk about
closing down the Muslim Brotherhood, saying he "is not the leader of the
movement." Morsi dismissed the threat and he was dead after a couple of
days. Muslim Brotherhood has accused Egyptian authorities of being responsible
for Morsi's "deliberate slow death."Egyptian authorities "put
him in solitary confinement...they withheld medication and gave him disgusting

identifying as "not-religious" has seen a steady rise since 2013
according to a recent study. The recent report indicates that the rise of
non-religious individuals under the age of 30 has been the greatest.The survey
compiled by BBC Arabic said the number of non-religious people rose from 11% in
2012-2014 to 18% in 2019. Except for Yemen, trust in religious leaders also
decreased in all Arab regions. Countries like Iraq,Sudan and Palestine showed
the steepest decline in religious leaders.Trust in Islamist movement like the
Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Hezbollah has seen a sharp decline, even lower
than the trust of religious leaders in the region.The survey conducted by
Princeton University under its research network,'Arab Barometer' interviewed 25407
people in 10 countries including disputed Palestinian region. It clarifies that
certain gulf countries refused to participate and result from Kuwait and Syria
could not be included due to issues relating to result coming too late and

Bangkok :An order for mobile phone users in
Thailand's restive south to submit a photo of themselves for facial recognition
purposes is causing uproar from opponents who see it as further curtailing the
rights of the Muslim-majority population.But an army spokesman defended the
move, saying the facial identification scheme is needed to root out insurgents
deploying mobile phone-detonated home-made bombs. Thailand's three southernmost
states -- Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat -- have since 2004 been rife with
conflict between Malay-Muslim rebels and the Buddhist-majority Thai state,

Beirut:Mohammed Awwad and his fiancee, both
Muslims, recently found an affordable apartment for rent online in a town in
Lebanon, southeast of Beirut. 27-year-old journalist called the number and
asked the owner when they could drop by to take a look. He was stunned by her
response: Muslims are not allowed to settle in the town, she said.The apartment
owner apologized to Awwad, saying she wouldn't mind renting to people of any
sect but officials in the town of Hadat issued orders years ago that only
Christians be allowed to buy and rent property.The young Shiite Muslim man
could not believe what he heard and asked his fiancee, Sarah Raad, to call the
municipality and she, too, was told that the ban had been in place for
years.Hadat is a small example of Lebanon's deeply rooted sectarian divisions
that once led to a 15-year civil war that left more than 100,000 people dead.

Twin suicide attacks rock downtown Tunis
2 suicide blasts rocked the Tunisian capital today
killing at least one police officer and wounding several people. The first
blast involved a suicide bomber who targeted a police patrol on Tunis' central
Charles de Gaulle street, not far from French embassy.One police officer was
killed, while another was injured, according to the interior ministry.3
