‘Don’t cut short process’: SC to NRC
coordinator after retired soldier declared foreigner
New Delhi :A day after a retired soldier from
Assam, who served in Army for 30 years, was declared a foreigner by the state
police, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the National Register of
Citizens (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela to ensure a fair hearing without
cutting short the process and thereby completing the same by end of July, ANI
reported.Media reports suggested that CJI Ranjan Gogoi asked the NRC official
not to rush through the process in an attempt to meet the deadline of July
31.The top court’s observation came after Md Sanaullah, who retired as subedar
with the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) of Indian Army in
August 2017, was detained to be lodged in a detention centre for illegal
foreigners in the state as a Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) declared him a
foreigner. In his testimony at FT, Sanaullah said that he had served in insurgency-affected
areas of Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. He was declared a foreigner by FT
No 2 Kamrup (Rural) on May 23 this year. His family members and lawyer maintain
that Sanaullah’s Indian citizenship can be proved easily with the documents of his
ancestors, and of that of his employment with the Indian Army. Sanaullah at
present works as a sub-inspector with Assam Police’s border wing — a special
wing that deals with detection of illegal migrants in the state.Confirming that
Sanaullah has been detained, Additional SP of Kamrup, Sanjib Saikia, said, “FT
declared him a foreigner and we are complying with the law.”indianexpress

but the Prime Minister couldn’t make it as the date coincided with his own

No Iftar Parties in UP this Ramadan, Election
Results to Blame
LUCKNOW:As the holy month of Ramadan draws to
an end, so does a tradition that began almost 44 years ago. This is for the
time in four decades that no political party has hosted the traditional Iftar
party in Uttar Pradesh. It is only Governor Ram Naik who is said to be hosting
the Iftar party on June 3 though invites for the same have not yet been sent
out.The Samajwadi Party, which regularly hosted Iftar parties, has given it a
miss this time. In fact, whenever the party was in power, there would be two
Iftars – one hosted by SP Chief Minister and the other by the party.“It is
probably due to elections that we have not hosted the Iftar party. All of us
were busy campaigning and then after the results came in, the mood in the party
was sombre and no one even raised the issue,” said a SP leader. The Congress has
similar reasons for skipping the Iftar party.“When the results came in, UPCC
President Raj Babbar sent his resignation and there was no one we could talk to
on the subject. I personally feel that irrespective of the party’s performance
in the election, we should have hosted the Iftar,” said a former UPCC
President.Congress sources, however, said that the party was short on funds and
could not afford to host the Iftar party.IANS

Post-poll survey: PDP loses its standing in
Kashmir, BJP unchallenged in Jammu
The election results in J&K yet again
highlighted the polarised nature of the political landscape of the State. While
the BJP retained its two seats in the Jammu division and one in Ladakh, the NC
replaced PDP in the three in Kashmir.Except for the large victory margins
(three lakh plus) of BJP in Jammu and Udhampur seats, the result did not
surprise many. Union Minister Jitendra Singh’s margin of 3.57 lakh in the
latter seat is one of the 10 highest victory margins in the country. He
defeated Vikramaditya Singh, son of senior Congress leader Karan Singh. It was
the national parties — BJP and the Congress — which were the main contenders in
Jammu. Parties based in the Jammu region did not fare well. Former Minister
Choudhary Lal Singh, who was expected to cut into BJP votes, having quit the
PDP-BJP government and the BJP after participating in a rally organised by the
Hindu Ekta Manch on the Kathua case, lost his deposit in both Udhampur and
Jammu, as did National Panthers Party candidates. The survey found the Kathua
case to have been a voting consideration for only about one-fifth of the
voters. Moreover, importance attached to the issue was found to be far greater
among Muslim voters than Hindu voters, 40% as opposed to 11%.thehindu

Mumbai Doctor Was Murdered, Says Lawyer, After
Autopsy Shows Neck Injury
MUMBAI: The post-mortem report of postgraduate medical student doctor
Payal Tadavi, who was found dead in her hostel room recently, has revealed
evidence of a ligature mark on her neck.Under ''provisional cause of death'',
the post-mortem report stated ''evidence of ligature mark over neck.''A Mumbai
court on Wednesday sent all the three accused in the case to two-day police
custody as her family sought directions for the crime to be treated as a
murder. The lawyer representing Payal Tadvi's family told the court that said
that circumstances of the medical post-graduate student's death suggested it
was a murder case. "From the circumstances of her death and bruise mark on
her body, we can say that it must be a case of murder and not of suicide.
Police must investigate this case in the lines of a murder investigation.
Police should be given 14 days time for that," Nitin Satpute, counsel
representing the deceased's family, said."The accused had taken her body
to some other place and later it was brought to hospital so there is a suspicion
of tampering with the evidence," Mr Satpute alleged in court.ANI

For Those Who Want To Change Name and
Character of AMU: Toppers in Class X Exam Are Dakshita, Tushar and Manvendra
New Delhi/Aligarh:Some Hindu-right groups have
long been demanding change in the name of Aligarh Muslim University and also
its minority character. At a regular interval, controversies and sometimes
violent protests are engineered around the 100-year-old central university.
However, away from the manufactured hateful political discourses, thousands of
students – Muslims, Hindus and others – have been doing excellence in their
studies. The latest results of Class X exam at AMU school are a cool and clear
reminder to AMU haters and baiters that it is not a ‘madrasa’ or ‘Muslim’
institution, rather a secular, mainstream academic institute where Hindu students
also, along with their Muslim classmates, are doing wonders. The results of
Class X exam 2019 at the AMU school were declared last week. A total of 1387
students had sat in the exam. All the top three positions were captured by
Hindu students.First topper was Dakshita Dwivedi (97%), second topper was
Tushar Kant and Ayush Varshney who shared the second position with 96.60% each,
and the third position was captured by Manvendra Singh Holkar with 96.40%, said
an AMU official.“This is #AMU,” he tweeted.AMU’s minority status was challenged
in the court and for some years it is pending in the Supreme Court.India

Israel to hold new election as Netanyahu fails
to form coalition
Israeli legislators have voted to dissolve
parliament and set the country on the path to a second election within months,
after right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to put together a
ruling coalition before a midnight deadline. In April, Netanyahu appeared set
for a fifth term as prime minister after his Likud Party won 35 of the 120
seats in the parliament, even though he faces possible indictment in three
corruption cases. He has denied any wrongdoing and accused his opponents of
mounting a witch-hunt.But despite weeks of negotiations he failed to overcome
divisions between secular and religious allies and in the early hours of
Thursday, parliament voted by 74-45 to dissolve itself. The unprecedented vote
was prompted by Netanyahu's failure to reach a coalition deal even though his
party and its allies won a majority in the April 9 election. The move prevents
the scenario of Israeli President Reuven Rivlin selecting another person to try
to form a government, but also sends the country into what is likely to be
another divisive campaign before a fresh vote that is expected to take place in
September.aljazeera

conflict, and told Kushner Israel had to withdraw from the occupied West Bank,
which Israel captured in 1967 Arab-Israeli war."His Majesty stressed the
need for a comprehensive and lasting peace based on a two-state solution, leading
to an independent Palestinian state on 4 June 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as
