In a first, India deports 7 Rohingya immigrants to Myanmar; UN slams
move
New Delhi:In a first, India today deported 7 Rohingya immigrants to
Myanmar. 7 illegal immigrants, lodged in Assam jail since 2012,were handed over
to the Myanmar authorities in Moreh border post in Manipur today.Earlier in the
day, the Supreme Court refused to intervene and stop their deportation. Those
deported are Md Jamal, Mohbul Khan, Jamal Hussain, Md Yonus, Sabir Ahmed, Rahim
Uddin and Md Salam, all in the age bracket of 26-32 years, a Cachar district
official said.They were apprehended in July 2012 for violating the Foreigners’
Act and were placed in detention at the Silchar Central Jail since then.The
nationality of the immigrants was confirmed after the Myanmar govt verified
their addresses in Rakhine State, another official said,India’s decision to
send back 7 immigrants has drawn criticism from UN. “Indian govt has an
international legal obligation to fully acknowledge the institutionalised
discrimination, persecution, hate and gross human rights violations these
people have faced in their country of origin and provide them with the
necessary protection,”UN’s Special Rapporteur on racism, Tendayi Achiume,
said.Rejecting the plea to stop the handover process, a 3-judge bench headed by
CJI Ranjan Gogoi said the seven were found as illegal immigrants by the court
earlier and that Myanmar has already accepted them as its nationals. Arguing
for the petitioners, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan said it was
responsibility of the court to protect Rohingya.He alleged that the worst kind
of genocide has taken place in Myanmar in which over 10,000 people were killed.

community allegedly converted to Hinduism with the support of a local Hindutva
outfit to “secure justice” for the death of their son, a fact-finding of a
Muslim organization tried to reach the family to know the truth but they
couldn’t because both the local Police and members of the Hindutva outfit were
camping at the home of the family. The alleged conversion, felicitated by a
little-known outfit Yuva Hindu Vahini-Bharat (YHV-B), took place at Badarkha
village of Baghpat district on Tuesday.Despite registration a case of murder,
the death of his son being shown as suicide and no arrest so far by the police,
said a Muslim man Akhtar Ali who along with 12 members of his family allegedly
converted to Hinduism.After changing their religion,family said they are now
expecting that police may “properly investigate” the matter and they will get
“justice for our new community”. “My name was Ali, I have changed my religion
because the police did not investigate our case in a fair manner, even the
Muslim community did not stand in our support. In Modi’s India, Muslims not
treated fairly. I demand justice.” Dharam Singh (new name) told ANI. Akhtar
told media that he felt the change might impact police to “properly investigate
his son’s murder”.Claiming voluntary conversion, family also submitted an
affidavit to SDM. Baghpat DM Rishirendra Kumar also confirmed that the family
members said they had changed their religion because they were not satisfied
with the police probe into the death of Akhtar’s son Gulhasan.The family
changed their religion with the help of a local right-wing group — YHV-B by
performing formal Hindu ritual a ‘hawan’ in the presence of YHV-B members in a
local temple. A team from a prominent Muslim outfit tried to reach the family
of Akhtar to get first-hand information about the issue but they could not
reach the village as both the police and members of Hindutva outfit were
camping there in large number, said a member of the team on the condition of
anonymity. However, the team talked to some people in the neighbouring areas to
know about the family.Team came to know that the family that has allegedly
converted to Hinduism comes from Jogi community. The community is almost
illiterate. In the past, male members of the community would generally wear
saffron dress, hold a violin and visit door to door reciting folk songs to earn

Chennai: Malayalam writer Kamal C Chavara
embraced Islam to protest against the cremation of the mortal remains of
ex-naxal leader Najmal Babu, also known as TN Joy, who passed away on Tuesday.
Sources said that Babu's body was cremated by his kin, despite protests from
his friends, and in contrast to the last wish of the activist.In a back drop to
Chavara's conversion, Babu had reportedly embraced Islam in 2015 to protest
against the increasing hate crimes faced by the Muslim community in the
country. Following his conversion, he changed his name from TN Joy to Najmal
Babu. It was his wish that his mortal remains should be interred in the
compound of Cheraman Juma Mosque. However, his kin claimed his body and
cremated it at a family property in Kodungallur. Police had to use force to
gain possession of the body as Babu's friends insisted that his body be
interred according to the activist's last wish.Chavara reportedly noted in a
Facebook post that to be a Muslim in today's India is a revolutionary act. The
writer further said that he is sticking his neck out to receive the first slash

Court for its final resolution. Meanwhile, various supporting and non-supporting
groups are further trying to heat up the environment as the next hearing on the
long-standing Ram Mandir matter will take place on Oct.29. The SC for yet to

court, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat said leaving aside a few, most of the people who
are against the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya are not opposing it
openly as the deity is worshipped by the country's majority. "Even those
who are in the parties that oppose Ram Mandir, cannot oppose it openly. Because
they know that they are in power and crores of Hindus and a huge section of the

Mumbai:In a big turn in the decade-old Malegaon blasts case, the
special court has accepted a plea from affected people to recognize them as
intervenor in the case. Members of saffron outfits facing trial in the case and
NIA had opposed plea.Jamiat Ulama Maharashtra that is providing legal aid to
affected people termed the development as “a big setback for saffron terror
accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Col. Purohit and others and NIA”.To present
their view before the court, affected people had to seek permission from the
court every time and saffron terror accused and counsels of NIA would oppose
it, said Gulzar Azmi, head of legal cell of Jamiat.Counsel for Jamiat Sharif
Shaikh told the special court that in this case, the Supreme Court and High
Court have allowed affected persons to participate in the hearing as
intervenor,so the lower court should also accept them as intervenor. He said
that affected persons want to help the court and prosecution so that those
killed in the blasts could get justice. He further told the court that as the
prosecution has begun changing its stand, the court should allow the affected
persons to intervene.Opposing the plea, counsels for saffron terror accuse and
NIA told the court that the investigating agency was doing its job honestly and
by allowing affected persons to intervene in the case, the court proceeding
could be affected, so their pela should be rejected.However, after hearing both
sides, the court on Wednesday accepted the plea of affected persons. Azmi said
that the petition was filed on behalf of Syed Nisar whose son Syed Azhar was
killed in the blast. 6Commenting on the new development, Azmi said that if NIA
had executed its duty honestly, victims would not have to knock the doors of

Bhatt challenging his arrest
New Delhi:The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition filed by the
wife of arrested former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt challenging his arrest in a
22-year-old case of alleged planting of drugs to arrest an advocate.A bench of CJI
Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph said the petition can be moved
before the Gujarat high court.The petition had also alleged that Bhatt was not
being allowed to sign any document in custody to enable him approach the apex
court.Bhatt and seven others, including some former policemen attached with
Banaskantha Police, were initially detained for questioning in the case. Bhatt
was the Banaskantha district superintendent of police in 1996.As per police,
Banaskantha cops under Bhatt had arrested one Sumersingh Rajpurohit, an
advocate,in 1996 on charges of possessing around one kg of drugs. At that time,
Banaskantha Police had claimed that the drugs were found in a hotel room
occupied by Rajpurohit in the district’s Palanpur town.However,a probe by the
Rajasthan Police had concluded that Rajpurohit was allegedly falsely implicated
by the Banaskantha Police to compel him to transfer a disputed property at Pali
in Rajasthan. It had also claimed to have found that Rajpurohit was allegedly
abducted by the Banaskantha Police from his residence at Pali in Rajasthan.HT
HC reserves verdict on PIL urging CBI to challenge Amit Shah discharge

Legal news website Bar & Bench has reported that the Bombay High
Court has reserved judgment in a public interest petition filed by Bombay
Lawyer’s Association in January this year, which urges that CBI must challenge
a 2014 order discharging BJP President Amit Shah in relation to Sohrabuddin,
Kauser Bi and Tulsiram Prajapati alleged encounter killings.Sohrabuddin Shaikh,
who Gujarat police claimed was a terrorist, was killed in an alleged fake
encounter by the Gujarat and Rajasthan police in 2005. His wife Kausar Bi
disappeared, and was alleged to have been eliminated by police. Shaikh's
associate Tulsi Prajapati was also later killed in an alleged fake
encounter.CBI took over the probe in Feb.2010 and filed a chargesheet in July the
same year against 23 accused, including Amit Shah, who at that time was the
minister of state for home in Gujarat. The trial court, over a period of time,
discharged several accused in the case, including Shah and three IPS officers. In
its petition, according to the report, the petitioners have said that the BLA
chose to challenge the discharge of 3 accused police officers—Rajasthan police
sub-inspectors Himanshu Singh and Shyam Singh Charan and senior Gujarat police
officer NK Amin—in the case in 2014, but failed to challenge the discharge of
BJP chief Amit Shah, and contended that this was “arbitrary” and “mala

are you entitled for bail,” reported ANI.Mitra was earlier arrested on Sept. 20

uploading his views on social media with an intention to outrage and to wound
religious feeling which may create communal fraction”. Police said the “accused

to score big in the municipal elections in J&K, polling for which begins on

win a single seat in the 2014 assembly polls in the state, is likely to gain
control of at least seven municipal committees in the Kashmir Valley without
facing a contest.Elections for 624 wards in Kashmir are to be held in 4 phases

two municipal corporations in the twin capital cities, 6 municipal councils and

in J&K
Srinagar:In the aftermath of special police officer decamping with 7
rifles and one pistol from the official residence of assembly member and later
joining militancy, the police have withdrawn SPOs who were performing duties
with protected persons in J&K.ADG of police, law and order, Muneer Ahmad
Khan has directed all the SSPs to withdraw SPOs performing personal security
officers(PSO) duties of protected persons. “It has been observed that some
special police officers are performing personal security officers duties with
the protected persons which is not in accordance with the security norms as
SPOs are not trained to perform PSO duties. It is hereby ordered that
henceforth no unit/district SSP shall deploy any special police officer to
personnel security officer duties and all SPOs except SPO drivers presently
attached with protected person be immediately withdrawn. Repeat, immediately
withdrawn,” reads the order.Last week, SPO Adil Bashir who was attached with
assembly member Wachi, Ajaz Ahmad Mir decamped with seven Ak rifles and a
pistol from the official residence of the legislator.A day after his escape the
picture of SPO was posted along with Hizbul Mujahideen militants carrying

Wakf property report: Karnataka HC summons Minority Dept Principal

Karnataka High Court has directed Principal Secretary of the Minority
Welfare Dept.to personally appear before it on Oct.9 to show cause why the
official should not be punished for wilfully disobeying an undertaking given to
court in 2015 for placing before State legislature a report on encroachment of
wakf properties in the State.A Division Bench comprising Justice Raghvendra S. Chauhan
and Justice B.M. Shyam Prasad issued the direction in a contempt of court
petition filed by S.K. Kantha. During earlier hearing on the contempt petition,
Govt had claimed that report, submitted by the then chairperson of Karnataka
State Minorities Commission in 2012, had already been placed before Legislative
Assembly and Legislative Council during Feb.2016 legislature session as per
undertaking given in this regard to the court on Sept.10, 2015 in a PIL
petition.Later, it came to the court’s notice that the report was not placed
before both Houses of the legislature but Govt had “resolved not to accept the
recommendations of the special report of then chairperson of the commission”
when a copy of Govt’s proceedings was submitted to the court.thehindu
West Bengal: Muslims body demands Rs 2 lakh aid each to all madrasas
Kolkata:All Bengal Minority Youth Federation, a body comprising Muslim
clerics and scholars from across the state, on Wednesday demanded an aid of Rs 2
lakh each to all the madrasas on the line of fund provided by the state
Govt to the local clubs. They also
sought a hike in the stipend of Imams from Rs 2,500 they are getting at
present.The gathering referred to the Mamata Banerjee Govt ’s decision to pay
Rs 10,000 each to 28,000 Durga puja committees throughout the state and sought
enhancement in stipend of Imams similarly.“We do not have any problem if money
is given to the Durga Puja committees but imam’s’ stipend should be increased,”
Furfura Sharif’s leader Toha Siddiqui said addressing the gathering. “All the
Madrasas should be given financial aid of Rs two lakhs like that is provided to
the local clubs,” he added.The state Govt
provides Rs 2 lakh each annually to clubs for infrastructure development.
Siddiqui also sought at least 16 seats from the ruling TMC for minorities in

RSS has criticised the Kerala Govt for rushing to implement the
Supreme Court verdict on entry of women into the Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala,
Kerala.A statement issued by Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi, RSS general secretary,
said that while the Supreme Court’s judgement must be honoured, “It is an issue
of a local temple tradition and faith to which sentiments of millions of
devotees, including women, are attached. These sentiments of the devotees
cannot be ignored while considering judgement.”RSS also slammed Kerala Govt for
implementing judgement immediately. “Unfortunately, Kerala Govt has taken steps
to implement the judgement with immediate effect without taking the sentiments
of the devotees into consideration. There is an obvious reaction to the same by
the devotees, especially women, who are protesting against the forceful
breaking of the tradition.”The organisation called upon stakeholders, including
spiritual and community leaders, to address the issue through judicial options.

Meerut: 6-yr-old, 5 others hurt in Dalit-Gurjar clash over tiff
between two youths
Meerut:6 persons including a 6-year-old boy were injured in
stone-pelting and exchange of fire between members of the Dalit and Gurjar
communities in Meerut’s Rithani village late Tuesday evening. Krishna (6)
sustained a pellet injury while standing outside his house, while Gajendra (20)
was shot at during the clash that lasted around half an hour.According to the
police, two Dalit youths — identified as Vikas (23) and Vipin (21) — were
returning to the village when they were allegedly intercepted by Gajendra, a Gurjar,
and other members of the community, at the main market. Both youths were
thrashed, after which the group fled. Police said Vikas had had a row with
Gajendra on Sunday over parking of their vehicles, during which Vikas had
allegedly overpowered Gajendra, for which the latter wanted to take
revenge.When news of the Tuesday encounter spread, dozens of Dalits hit the
streets. They first took Vikas and Vipin to the Partapur police station and
then admitted them in a local hospital. Meanwhile, an alleged Bhim Army
volunteer— identified as Ravi— allegedly sent messages to people in nearby
villages through WhatsApp. By 8 pm, hundreds of Dalits, raising slogans like
‘Bhim Army Zindabad’ and carrying guns and lathis, assembled there, said a
local police officer. Police further said that members of Dalit community then
attacked the homes of Gurjars in Rithani village, as well as women and
children. There was exchange of fire and both groups flung bricks at each
other. As a result, the main market was shut down and personnel from 3 police

Love jihad case: Notice to police on allegations of ‘submitting false
status report’
Chandigarh:Chandigarh district court issued a notice to Chandigarh
Police after the defence moved an application alleging that it (UT police)
submitted a false status report in the ‘love jihad’ case, in which an underage
Srinagar resident has been charged for criminal intimidation and rape of
Chandigarh-based girl. The court also sought a reply on an application moved by
the defense counsel to register a case against sub inspector Upwinder Singh in
case.The court had sought status report from police on the complainant’s age,
acid attack and rape. Cops submitted the report on Wednesday, stating that the
accused was trying to “save his skin”. The defence alleged that the police
officer submitted the status report without conducting fair investigation. The
matter will come up for hearing on Oct.9. Defence counsel Terminder Singh moved
an application against SI Singh, of Sector 34 police station, who submitted the

Bihar, was allegedly dragged out and gangraped by 2 men on Monday.The accused

the video, the news channel reported, the woman is heard telling the men that
she was observing a fast for her children and begs them to take into account

shortage of Punjabi, Urdu language teachers
New Delhi:Delhi Minority Commission (DMC) recently issued as many as 6
notices to directorate of education (DoE) after complaints from Govt school students that they have not been
provided Urdu and Punjabi as third language options. According to DMC chairperson
Zafarul Islam Khan, officials at several Govt schools, including Yamuna Vihar,
Sarai Kale Khan and Shahdara, said Urdu and Punjabi languages are not being
taught there.“Some students told us that the heads of their schools asked them
not to opt for Urdu or Punjabi as their third language because they are not
scoring and it might affect their results. But the major reason is the lack of
teachers for the disciplines,” he said.In response to a notice to a Sarai Kale
Khan school, DoE told the commission last week there was no teacher for the
languages and promised to allot one.The commission has compiled a report
through RTI on the status of Urdu and Punjabi languages in Delhi Govt schools.
Of the 1,100 Govt schools in Delhi, Urdu and Punjabi languages are being taught
in 284 and 282 schools, respectively.The report said that of 1,028 sanctioned
posts of trained graduate teachers (TGT) in Urdu language, 883 posts are lying
vacant. Similarly, 780 out of 1,023 sanctionedTGT posts in Punjabi language are
yet to be filled.TGTs are eligible to teach up to class 10.“The situation is
still better for class XI and XII students. Only 5 and 8 vacancies are there
for Punjabi and Urdu, respectively,”said Manzar Ali,member of DMC’s advisory
committee who has compiled the report.Sanjay Goel,DoE director, cited “lack of
demand” as the reason for the vacant posts. “Wherever there is no teacher there
is no demand for the subjects and when there is a demand, we make all possible
arrangements to allot a teacher. We are trying to appoint one permanent teacher
for both languages in all Govt schools,” he said.The commission members,
however, said despite being taught in fewer schools, a large number of students

Head of a UN-mandated team of investigators on Yemen has accused Saudi
Arabia and the UAE of interfering in his panel's work, which accuses all sides
of the conflict in Yemen of rights abuses. Kamel Jendoobi said that his team
presented a list of human rights abuses to the UN.These were based on a report
his panel published in Aug, which said that it had "reasonable grounds to
believe that the parties to the armed conflict in Yemen have committed a
substantial number of violations of international humanitarian law".Many
of these violations may amount to "war crimes", the report said,
pointing to widespread arbitrary detention, rape, torture and the recruitment
of children as young as eight to fight."I did not expect such a harsh

said that United Nations Security Council must have a permanent Muslim member

A Cairo court has adjourned the retrial of ex Egyptian President
Mohamed Morsi and a number of other Muslim Brotherhood members to 24

Egypt must “immediately reveal” the whereabouts of prominent human
rights defender and lawyer, Ezzat Ghoneim, HRW said .Ghoneim has been in

school in Pakistan as a venue for possible talks between Taliban and Afghan
Govt-sponsored peace council and religious scholars to find a peaceful solution
to the conflict in Afghanistan.Afghan scholars, who were in Pakistan this week
to meet Pakistani religious leaders about holding conferences of clerics in
Islamabad and Kabul on the war in Afghanistan, met Sami-ul-Haq in Islamabad on
Sunday.Many Taliban leaders studied in Sami-ul-Haq’s religious school, “Darul
Uloom Haqqania,” in the northwestern town of Akora Khattak, and he is believed
to have a certain degree of influence over Taliban.7-member Afghan delegation,
comprising members of the High Peace Council and the ulema council, met
Sami-ul-Haq, chief of his own faction of Jamiat ulema-e-Islam party, and sought
his help in restoring peace in the war-ravaged country.“Taliban and the Afghan
ulema should hold closed-doors meetings and I offer my madrassa Haqqania for
their face-to-face talks. They should first sit, pave the way for removing
mistrust and address each other’s concerns,” Haq told Arab News. He said that
he had a 2-and-half hour meeting with the Afghan clerics about this on Sunday.
“They sought my mediation with the Taliban and empowered me to make a decision.
I told them that this is a complicated issue and foreign powers are involved
and they will not accept this. But I assured them to convey their opinion to
the Taliban and the Taliban’s response to them. I will make efforts to broker
your meeting,” JUI-S leader told the Afghan delegation. Taliban spokesman
Zabihullah Mujahid refrained from commenting when a query was posted about
whether the Taliban would accept Sami’s mediatory role.Afghan embassy also
refused to provide on-the-record comments about whether the Afghan side offered
mediation to Sami-ul-Haq. However, a source close to the talks confirmed that
the mediation was part of the discussion. “Sami-ul-Haq told the delegation that
the Taliban want an impartial mediator and our people then told him you should
come forward and mediate,” source told Arab News. Taliban wrote a letter to
Pakistani scholars last week to stay away from the meeting and later issued a
statement to dismiss the move as a “plan of the Americans to exert religious
pressure on the Taliban.” Experts believe that Haq is irrelevant as the Taliban
have new fighters and the Taliban leaders have long been out of his religious

A glass of wine has been linked to various health benefits earlier but
the latest research on the subject published in the journal ‘Alcoholism:Clinical
and Experimental Research’, has shown that consuming alcohol on four or more
days of the week increases your risk of early death by 20%.“It used to seem
like having one or 2 drinks per day was no big deal, and there even have been
some studies suggesting it can improve health. But now we know that even the
lightest daily drinkers have an increased mortality risk”, said first author
Sarah M Hartz, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry. After analysing
more than 400000 American adults between the age group of 18 and 85,
researchers from the Washington School of Medicine recorded that there was a
20% high risk of dying early when people drank liquor on four or more days of
the week compared with drinking three times a week or less. The increased risk
of death was consistent across all age groups.
