Upset over police probe in kin death, 20
members of Muslim family embrace Hinduism in UP; later 7 revert back:media reports
Meerut: 13 members of a Muslim family on
Tuesday converted to Hinduism in Baghpat with the help from a little-known
rightwing group — Yuva Hindu Vahini-Bharat. The reason behind their decision to
convert, they claimed, was the lack of support from their community after the
“murder” of a family member. The police claimed it to be a suicide. They said
that they now expect “justice from our new community”. In January, 22-year-old
Gulhasan’s family, natives of Badarka village in the district shifted to Navada
village in search of better prospects. “We shifted because several of our
relatives lived there, it is Muslim-dominated and because it is closer to
Delhi, we expected better fortune,” said Gulhasan’s brother Dilshad (34). “We
purchased a house and Gulhasan rented a shop to run a clothing store.”On July
22, Gulhasan was found dead, hanging from the roof of his store. The family
claimed he was killed by business rivals in the village. “We had found injury
marks on his body,” said Dilshad.Gulhasan’s eldest brother Naushad said, “We
told police that it (Gulhasan’s death) was a planned murder but they were told
us that he committed suicide.” Dilshad said they received no support from
village residents or their relatives there.“On July 11,our cousin Rajudeen had
scuffled with local residents. No FIR was lodged in connection with the
scuffle. Since we supported Rajudeen, people in the locality did not like us,”
said Dilshad. They moved a local court seeking an FIR into the death. “Under
the court’s direction a murder case was registered against 4 residents of
Navada village on Aug.28,”said Dinesh Kumar, Kotwali SHO, adding that no one
has been arrested in the case so far. “Autopsy cleared it as suicide. After FIR
was lodged,we sent the autopsy report to medico legal experts in Lucknow for
their opinion. After obtaining that, we will proceed further.” Navada village
head Sarwar Rana said Gulhasan’s family was making false allegations. “Gulhasan
had a dispute and was upset. That led him to taking his own life. Among the 4
persons named in FIR is a cousin.” In Aug, family returned to Badarka village. “Almost
ostracised by our community, we decided to come back and also to convert. We
will continue to fight for justice,” said Naushad. Dilshad said that they
approached the Yuva Hindu Vahini-Bharat a month ago. “Our father gave in
writing that all 20 members of our family of 4 brothers, their wives and
children will convert and adopt new names. My youngest brother’s wife and my
elder brother Zakir and his family backed out. But 13 of us, including my
parents and brothers’ families, converted,” he said.Asked if by switching
religion, he hoped for “justice” in the case, Dilshad said, “We converted
because our community did not support us. By embracing Hinduism we are expecting
justice from our new community.”“Our outfit was formed in Feb.in Lucknow and we
are taking out programmes in various states for welfare of our Hindu brothers. We
also help those who want a ghar wapsi and this was why our activists in Baghpat
have helped a Muslim family in conversion,” said Sivraj Singh Chauhan, head of
Yuva Hindu Vahini-Bharat, which claims CM Yogi Aditynath as its “prerna stotra
(source of inspiration)”.“Family has given an affidavit that they wanted to
convert as per their will. They are not happy with the probe in the case
involving death of a member. The issue will be taken up with SP (City),”said
Baghpat DM Rishirendra Kumar.SP Shailesh Pandey said he met the family and
assured them a probe if they move a fresh plea for the same. indianexpress

Assam sends 7 Rohingya Muslims to Manipur to
be deported to Myanmar
Guwahati:Assam Govt on Wednesday sent 7 Rohingya refugees from
detention camp in Silchar to Imphal from where they would be deported to
Myanmar, a top Govt official said. “7
had left the detention camp this morning for Manipur from where they will be
sent back through a border post,” deputy commissioner of Cachar district, S
Lakshmanan said. Myanmar border at Moreh, is about 50 km south of Imphal. 7
Rohingya Muslims had been held at the Silchar central prison in Cachar district
since 2012 on charges of illegal entry. The deportation came after a last ditch
effort by advocate Prashant Bhushan for an urgent hearing of a PIL in the
Supreme Court to restrain the Govt from
deporting Rohingya refugees failed.“It is a routine process. We sent back a
Pakistani, an Afghani and 52 Bangladeshis recently,” said Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta,
additional director general, Border Organisation of Assam Police, which deals
with detection of foreigners. According to an intelligence reports, there are
about 32 Rohingya refugees in detention camps in Assam. At least 15 of them
including seven minors are in Tezpur. According to documents of the detention
camp that HT has accessed, they are from Rakhine state in Myanmar and were
apprehended in 2014 by Govt railway police. Last week, Centre had asked all
states to take biometric details of Rohingya refugees and other illegal
immigrants living in their jurisdiction as part of a country-wide security
exercise. UNHCR which had requested access to detained Rohingya refugees in
Assam, have not been given permission by Govt so far.Ahead of the deportation, a UN human
rights expert had expressed alarm at Gov ’s deportation plan saying returning
the seven Rohingya refugeesto Myanmar could violate international law. “Given
the ethnic identity of the men, this is a flagrant denial of their right to
protection and could amount to refoulement,” said UN Special Rapporteur on
racism, Tendayi Achiume.“Indian Govt has an international legal obligation to
fully acknowledge the institutionalised discrimination, persecution, hate and
gross human rights violations these people have faced in their country of
origin and provide them the necessary protection.HT
India prepares to deport 7 Rohingya men even

UN chief asks India to work with Bangladesh, Myanmar
to solve Rohingya crisis
United Nations Secretary General Antonio
Guterres has urged India to support Bangladesh in providing humanitarian
assistance to the Rohingya community and influence Myanmar to bring about
reconciliation, reported PTI.“What can India do? Support Bangladesh in helping
these people because there is a huge humanitarian problem,” said Guterres, who
is currently in India on a three-day visit. “Second, to pressure on Myanmar,
the military in Myanmar for reconciliation and create conditions for these
people to go back. These people will not go back in present circumstances.”Last
month, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina
accused Myanmar of using delaying tactics to block the return of Rohingya
refugees to their homes in Rakhine state. Hasina had said her nation was already
reeling from the responsibility towards its 160 million population and could
not provide a permanent refuge for the Rohingyas who were forced across the
border.Guterres said keeping people in such a “discriminatory situation” could
lead to terrorist groups exploiting the situation. “There should be
accountability to those crimes,” he said, describing the Rohingya as one of the
most discriminated communities in the world.scroll.in
Maharashtra moves SC against release of
activist Navlakha arrested in Bhima Koregaon violence case
Maharashtra Govt Wednesday moved the Supreme Court challenging
the Delhi High Court order allowing Gautam Navlakha, one of the five rights
activists arrested in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima case, to be freed from
house arrest. The plea has been filed in the apex court registry Wednesday
morning challenging the Delhi High Court order, Nishant Katneshwar, counsel for
the Maharashtra govt said. Delhi HC had on Monday freed Navlakha from house
arrest, five weeks after he along with four other rights activists were
arrested in connection with Koregaon-Bhima violence in Maharashtra. Granting
relief to Navlakha, the high court had also quashed the trial court’s transit
remand order which he had challenged before the matter was taken to the Supreme

Junaid Khan lynching: Main accused granted
bail by Punjab and Haryana HC
The main accused in the Junaid Khan lynching
case was granted interim bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on
Wednesday. With the latest order, all the accused in the case are now out on
bail.Naresh Kumar, the accused, has been in judicial custody since July 8,
2017.According to the order passed by Justice Daya Chaudhary, the interim bail
has been granted only in view of the stay ordered by the Supreme Court on the
proceedings of the case before the trial court. His lawyer had argued that the
accused has remained in jail for more than one year and should be granted an
interim bail.On June 7, a Sessions Court in Faridabad had dismissed the bail
plea of Naresh while stating that the allegations against him are of serious
nature and “there is every possibility for pressurising of the prosecution
witnesses” in case he is granted bail.“The accused cannot take the ground of
parity for the reason that he has been shown as the main accused and the
causing of injuries with sharp edge weapon have been attributed to the present
accused,” Additional Sessions Judge Narendra Sharma had said in his order. The
judge in the order had also mentioned that he has found substance in the
prosecution argument that mere long custody does not make the accused entitled
to bail. While granting bail to another accused in the case on April 17 this
year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stated that the initial dispute
between the victims and the accused was “only regarding the seat sharing and
abuses in the name of castes and nothing more”.indianexpress

Students Hold Awareness Campaign To Eradicate
Misunderstood Notions About Islam
In order to eradicate misunderstood notions
about Islam, the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) started a campaign called
Islamic Knowledge Test (IKT) in Sept– which will continue till Oct.15 – across
city colleges, to give a basic understanding of the religion which promotes
humanity, peace and harmonious living. As part of it, SIO is not only holding
awareness programs, but is also taking a small test to help participants gauge
their understanding of the religion. For promoting better understanding of
Islam, information kiosks were arranged at several college campuses by SIO
representatives, and in some colleges, informal talks were also held with
students who might have questions regarding Islam."This campaign is SIO's
way of taking small steps to eliminate the misconceptions about Islam, by
trying to give basic knowledge and understanding of the faith, to let people
know that Islam is like any other religion promoting humanity, peace and
harmonious living," said Simab Khan, SIO campus secretary for Mumbai. He
added,"We thought this will be an opportunity for people of all faiths to
understand Islam and its basic teachings. The purpose behind keeping a test at
the end of it was to give everyone the motivation to learn about the
religion. At the end of campaign, we'll be giving out prizes and
certificates."The campaign has till now been held in around 50 colleges,
with more than 2,000 students visiting the kiosks. Around 250 candidates
appeared for the test held last Sunday at 8 centres. "Over 70 % of the
participants were of non-Muslim faiths," added Khan.mid-day
UP govt’s plan to modernize madrassa education
falls flat in Bijnor
Bijnor: BJP-led UP Govt’s ambitious plan to
modernize madrassa education remained on papers in Bijnor as over 80,000
students of 615 madarssas are still following the old syllabus due to absence
of NCERT books in the market. Yogi Adityanath Govt had introduced NCERT books
in English, Hindi and Urdu in Madarsa Board in May this year. Madrasas were
also asked to follow NCERT curriculum and introduce subjects like Science,
Mathematics and Social Science. Later,
in July, the Govt had also promised to provide free NCERT books to 560 aided
minority institutes across the state. All other recognized seminaries were asked
to purchase books from market. However, absence of NCERT books in the market
forced thousands of students in the district to fall back on old books.
Mohammad Kamruddin, a teacher at Hakikatpur Gangwali madarssa, said:“NCERT
books were made compulsory for all madarssa students. The direction came in
July while session had begun in April. When we contacted publishers, they told
us that we will have to apply online to procure NCERT books. There is shortage
of books in local market. Most of the students have purchased books of old
syllabus.” When contacted, district minority welfare officer Praveen Mishra
also confirmed that there is a crunch of NCERT books in the market. Several
madrassa managements tried to procure book but could not. TOI

reducing school dropout rate among Muslim girls.“The concerted efforts have
proved results by reducing the drop out from 70 % to about 35-40 percent,” said
Naqvi. Sources said that university in different phases will provide education

BSP chief Mayawati lashes at ‘arrogant’ Congress, rules out tie-up for
Rajasthan and MP elections
New Delhi :Ruling out an alliance with the Congress in the upcoming
assembly elections in Rajasthan and MP, BSP supremo Mayawati today said the
party will contest on its own and alleged that some Congress leaders are
against a tie-up despite Sonia and Rahul Gandhi’s ‘honest’ intentions.“They
(Congress) are getting arrogant and are under misconception that they can
defeat BJP on their own but the ground reality is that people haven’t forgiven
Congress party for their mistakes and corruption…They don’t seem to be ready to
rectify themselves,” she told ANI.Mayawati said BSP loses out more than it
would gain from an alliance with the Congress. “In Rajasthan, the Congress was
offering us only nine seats out of 200 assembly seats, in MP 15-20 (out of 230
seats in the state),in Chhattisgarh only 5-6 seats out of 90.We have noticed
that whenever we have contested an election in alliance, all our votes get
transferred to Congress,” she said. Congress, like BJP, is conspiring to finish

Sangh Parivar, Justice Shah confessed that his own roots were seeped in

in pre-Independent India. I grew up reading the poems of Veer Savarkar.”It is
the deep-rooted psyche of the RSS and all its affiliates with their idea of
Hindu Rasthra and Akand Bharat, that compels them to view Muslims and Christians

social harmony.”deccanchronicle

October 8 but there’s no campaigning, no door-to-door canvassing, no poll rally

reasons” for the veil of secrecy over the conduct of the “faceless” poll
process, especially in the troubled south of the Valley. They say disclosure of
candidate details will make them vulnerable to threats, even endanger lives. So
far, 851 candidates have filed nomination papers for seats in 598 wards and 40
municipal bodies in the Valley. Across J&K, 1145 seats are up for grabs in
79 municipal bodies and a total of 3005 candidates are in the fray. PDP and NC,

‘Funds

betrayal, organise rallyIndia
West Bengal: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday faced her
first big minority challenge as imams in Kolkata came out in streets to stage
their protest. The All Bengal Minority Youth Federation, a body comprising
Muslim clerics and scholars from all across the state, is calling for an
increase in the stipend, which is Rs 2,500 at present, of Imams and
Muezzins. Some of the Imams and scholars participating in the rally are reported
to be close to Banerjee. West Bengal CM had in 2011 courted controversy when
she had declared to give the stipend to Imams. Blaming Banerjee for betraying
them, the clerics are questioning the West Bengal Govt’s decision to pay Rs
10,000 to each 28,000 Durga pujo clubs across the state.Accusing Banerjee of
majority appeasement, a section of the Muslim community demanded that if Hindus
can be given money for pujo, imams’ stipend should be increased. Reminding Banerjee
of her promise she made in 2011, the Imams said the WB Govt should give aid for at least 10,000 Madrasas
across the state. At present, the state funds are given to just over 200.The
protesters also demanded a Muslim police commissioner in Kolkata and more
representation in police forces. Notably, the rally was held without permission
from the police. It is interesting to note that this is the first time in the
last seven years that a Muslim rally has been denied permission in West

Would not suggest demonetisation to any country: New IMF chief
economist Gita Gopinath
New Delhi: Newly-appointed chief economist of International Monetary
Fund, Gita Gopinath, was a vocal critic of the Modi Govt’s demonetisation move,
but called the GST a ‘real reform’.In a Walk the Talk conversation last year
with ThePrint, Gopinath said no macro-economist would recommend this
prescription (demonetisation) for any developing or advanced economy. Modi Govt’s
demonetisation drive shook the Indian economy on 8 Nov.2016 by sucking out 86% of the cash in circulation overnight. In Walk
the Talk, 46-year-old economist called the drive unprecedented.“Not only
unprecedented in terms of practice, it is also unprecedented in terms of
theory. Because pretty much every single macro-economist colleague of mine,
whom I have spoken to, would say that this is something that we probably do not
recommend to any developing country,” said Gopinath.“Even in an advanced
economy, you wouldn’t do that,” said the John Zwaanstra professor of
International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. However,Gopinath
added that India could move towards a less-cash economy, leaving more money in
the banks, as a positive impact of the demonetisation drive.theprint

Saudi reduces its financial support to Jerusalem
A Jerusalemite official told Al-Khaleej Online that during the past
two months, Saudi Arabia has started reducing all humanitarian, educational,
and relief projects it used to oversee in the Holy City. He suggested that this
reduction is part of “Riyadh’s penalty for their objection of the Deal of the
Century”. Islamic Development Bank, based in Jeddah, also decided to reduce its
financial support to the city to $7 million from $ 60 million. The official
pointed out that they tried to inquire about the reason for this sudden decline
in the Saudi role in Jerusalem. They were told it was because of the “financial
crisis Saudi Arabia is currently facing.”According to the same official, the
people of Jerusalem considered that an “unconvincing” justification,
considering that funds have been already allocated to the projects overseen by
Riyadh and funded by the Islamic Development Bank.middleeastmonitor
International Court of Justice orders US. to lift sanctions on
humanitarian goods' import by Iran
United Nations’ highest court today ordered the US to lift sanctions
on Iran that affect imports of humanitarian goods and products and services
linked to the safety of civil aviation. Ruling by International Court of
Justice (ICJ) is legally binding, but it remains to be seen if the
administration of U.S. President Donald Trump will comply.Trump moved to
restore tough U.S. sanctions in May after withdrawing from Tehran’s nuclear
accord with world powers. Iran challenged the sanctions in a case filed in July
at the ICJ.In a preliminary ruling, the court said that Washington must
“remove, by means of its choosing, any impediments arising from” the
reimposition of sanctions to the export to Iran of medicine and medical
devices, food and agricultural commodities and spare parts and equipment
necessary to ensure the safety of civil aviation.AP
France Freezes Iranian assets after attempted terror attack
French Govt imposed sanctions
on 2 Iranian individuals and Iran’s interior security intelligence service for
what it said was an attempted attack against a meeting of an Iranian opposition
group near Paris. In a joint statement issued Tuesday by the foreign, interior
and finance ministries, France said, “an act of such gravity planned on our
territory can’t be left without response.” It named the individuals as
Assadollah Asadi and Saeid Hashemi Moghadam. The office was identified as the
Direction of Internal Security at Iran’s Intelligence Ministry. The French are
accusing the Iranian intelligence ministry of ordering the attempted attack, AFP
reported, citing diplomatic sources. On Monday, AFP reported that Germany
extradited to Belgium an Iranian diplomat suspected of being part of a plot to
bomb a June 30 gathering by about 25,000 of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, at Villepinte
near Paris. That same day, two Belgians of Iranian descent were arrested near
Brussels with explosives that inspectors believe were being brought to the
rally, and an Iranian diplomat posted to Vienna was arrested in Germany on
suspicion of directing the operation.Bloomberg

Iraq names new President, PM, ending months of deadlock
Iraq‘s parliament has elected as president Kurdish politician Barham Salih,
who immediately named Shi’ite Adel Abdul Mahdi PM -designate, ending months of
deadlock after an inconclusive national election in May. Presidency,
traditionally occupied by a Kurd, is a largely ceremonial position, but the
vote for Salih was a key step toward forming a new Govt , which politicians
have failed to do since the election.Under Iraq‘s constitution, Salih–a
British-educated engineer who has held office in both the Iraqi federal and
Kurdish regional Govt s – had 15 days to invite the nominee of the largest
parliamentary bloc to form a Govt . He chose to do so less than two hours after
his election.Since Saddam Hussein was toppled in a 2003 US-led invasion, power
has been shared among Iraq’s 3 largest ethnic-sectarian components.Reuters
Brotherhood in Algeria warns of collapse of state institutions
Head of the Society for Peace Movement in Algeria has warned that
state institutions in the North African country are gradually collapsing. The
move by loyalist deputies to force the President of National People’s Congress,
Said Bouhadja, to resign is a realistic example of this collapse, explained
Abderrazak Makri.Makri also drew attention to state President Abdelaziz
Bouteflika’s health condition.“The president is absent and no one knows who and
how decisions are taken. Photographs of him are being circulated with no
respect for his position and privacy, which is a sign of the state’s weakness.”
He suggested that this exposes Algeria to international ridicule but some
people still want to maintain the status quo. “It’s as if Algeria is sterile
and there is nobody to do the job except the current president; as if the
people have no power and cannot take care of themselves unless the president
appoints his successor.” middleeastmonitor

Canada suspends, fines ISNA-Canada over 'funding' Hizbul Mujahideen in
India; Islamic charity denies charges
Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has suspended the Islamic Society of
North America-Canada (ISNA-Canada) for funding groups allegedly linked to
Hizbul Mujahideen.CRA has banned the Mississauga-based Islamic charity
organisation for a year starting from 12 September and has also ordered it to
pay a fine of $5,50,000.Canadian Govt auditors have alleged that ISNA-Canada “failed
to conduct any meaningful due diligence” when it transferred $1,36,000 to
India's Kashmir region where groups like Hizbul Mujahideen have been in an
armed conflict with the Indian forces. CRA said that the Islamic charity has
acted as a ‘conduit’ for many organisations which supports terrorist activities
in other countries. “It is the CRA’s view that the society’s resources may
have, directly or indirectly, been used to support the political efforts of
Jamaat-e-Islami and/or its armed wing Hizbul Mujahideen,” CRA has stated,
according to an India Today report. However, according to report, the Charities
Directorate has not revoked ISNA-Canada’s charity status but the group was
required to enter a compliance agreement whereby it must “cease its overseas
operations”. According to a Global News article, ISNA Islamic Services of
Canada was stripped of its charitable status for “non-compliance,” according to
records obtained by Global News. Authorities also revoked a related charity,
Canadian Islamic Trust Foundation. Both are former affiliates of ISNA-Canada,
and shared its Mississauga,Ontario, address. However, ISNA-Canada has denied all
the allegations levelled against it by CRA. “We are saddened by this
outcome," ISNA-Canada said in a written statement, another Global News
article said. According to the report,ISNA-Canada has also denied any links to
terrorism and has said that it has in fact made "progressive and important
changes” to its governance and in "how it operates as one of the largest
Muslim organisations in Canada".“We remain politically impartial and are
not in any way linked to any political or extremist group,” said the
organisation, adding,“We will continue our operations and remain committed to
always striving to be the best possible organisation we can be in service to
Canadians."According to the Global News report, in a letter addressed to
community members, ISNA-Canada chair Katherine Bullock said:"We have spent
the last decade rectifying these mistakes and reforming our organisation to
ensure that we have a robust governance structure in place so that the mistakes
made are not repeated."firstpost
