Muslim engineer beaten to death, Qatari among
injured after child lifting rumour leads to lynching in Bidar
Bidar:A 32-year-old software engineer was
beaten to death and three others, including a Qatari national, critically
injured by a mob in Bidar district of Karnataka which suspected they were a
group of “child lifters”.Officials said that Mohammed Azam Ahmed of Malakpet in
Hyderabad, who works with as a software engineer, died on the spot, while a
Qatari national, Salham Eidal Kubaisi(38), and Noor Mohammed and Mohammed
Salman from Barkas in Hyderabad suffered critical injuries and were admitted to
the Bidar Govt hospital initially before
being shifted to Hyderabad. An official from the Aurad Police Station, in whose
area the lynching took place, said that 3 WhatsApp administrators who
circulated the photos and messages that the 4 men were child kidnappers have
been arrested. “We have also arrested 30 people who were part of the mob,’’ the
official said.Kubaisi’s wife Zaibunnisa said that the 4 had set off from
Hyderabad Friday morning to meet a relative at Bidar and attend a social
function. After the function, they were en route to see a piece of land which
they were interested in purchasing.“When they stopped for tea near a school at
Murki village in Aurad taluka at about 4.30pm,they saw school children heading
home. Salham started handing out foreign chocolates, which he was carrying, to
students. However, someone raised an alarm that strangers were luring kidswith chocolates
and people started gathering immediately,” she said.She also said that the 4
men, sensing danger, fled in the Toyota Innova they were travelling in but by
that time some people had taken photographs of them and circulated it on
WhatsApp that they were kidnappers and should be stopped. The photos and the
messages soon went viral.“According to the victims, in the next village,
villagers blocked the road with a felled tree. To avoid the blockade, Azam, who
was driving, tried to go around it at high speed but ended up jumping over a
culvert and the vehicle fell into the ditch. The mob pulled them out and beat
them mercilessly,” said Ahmed Balala, MIM MLA.“I met the victims and they said
that two policemen reached the spot but could not prevent the mob from beating
them up.” He also said that it was still not clear whether Azam died due to
injuries sustained when the vehicle went off road or because he was beaten to

survivor of the June 18 murder allegedly by cow vigilantes after he was
discharged from a hospital here on Saturday. Samiyuddin also sent his first
statement detailing about the incident to IG Meerut Range Ram Kumar, expressing
his distrust on local police and asking for a judicial investigation into the
murder of cattle trader Qasim in Hapur district.On the fateful day, as he
intervened to save Qasim, Samiyuddin was thrashed and is yet to recover from
several injuries including fractures of both arms, right leg and ribs."I
have no faith on Pilkhua police station which deliberately failed to stop the

Range requesting him for a true judicial enquiry," Samiyuddin said.He

killing a cow when there was neither a cow nor any axe or knife to kill any
animal. Soon he was bleeding from head to toe and was semi-conscious.When the
police took him and Qasim to nearby GS Medical College, he remembers somebody
saying "Probably Qasim is dead".He also remembers being given
injections at the hospital and his thumb prints taken on some papers of which
he has no idea.His brother Yaseen and family-friend Dinesh Tomar, who also
spoke to IANS, said police kept misleading about his whereabouts till 5-5:30 in
the evening when they were forced to write and sign a false FIR. They agreed as
they were afraid of the police and also were more concerned about getting

(AIMPLB) today clarified that no proposal was made to set up Shariat courts in
all districts across the country."We have never talked about setting up
Shariat courts in all districts across the country. Our motive is to set them
up in places where it is required and where people want them," Zafaryab
Jilani, member of AIMPLB said.Jilani further clarified that Shariah boards were
not courts, adding that BJP and RSS were politicising the matter."Shariah
Board is not a court. BJP-RSS is doing politics in the name of Shariat
courts," he said at a press conference here.Jilani also said AIMPLB was
working with full responsibility and would hold workshops across the country to

Tribunal slapped foreigners' tag
Moulavi Muhammad Amiruddin was the first
deputy speaker of Assam. His family members have now been slapped with notices
from Foreigners' Tribunal, and are now struggling to prove their nationality.
Habikul Islam, Amiruddin's nephew, told a national daily, "Since 2012,
nearly 100 people of 400-strong extended family of my late uncle have been
issued foreigners' notice. All of them are descendants of my late uncle's 5
brothers."The Tribunal has already declared one grandson and one
great-grandson of the freedom fighter as foreigners. Amiruddin had played a
pivotal role in preventing Assam's inclusion in Pakistan during the partition.
After independence, he acted as an active politician and contested elections as
an independent MLA from the then Nowgong Mohammedan East constituency.He served
as the deputy speaker between April 1937 and 1946. Amiruddin along with three
other Jamiat Ulema E Hind-backed Muslim legislators had also backed Assam's
first CM Gopinath Bordoloi during his
struggle to keep Assam a part of India.During that time Premier Syed Muhammad Saadulla
of the Muslim League headed the Assam assembly till 1946. Bordoloi again became
Premier in 1946 and with the backing of Amiruddin, he kept Assam within India.
"My uncle used to tell us how he and 3 other Muslim legislators, all
backed by Jamiat, rejected the Muslim League's plan to club Assam with
Pakistan. They supported Bordoloi so that Assam remained within India. Look at
the irony today. My uncle's descendants have been issued notices,"
saidIslam, according to TOI. As per reports, all the 174 families of
Amiruddin's ancestral village Kalikajhari, which is located 10 km from the
Marigaon town, has received notices and some others have been declared as
foreigners.Abu Taher, son of Amiruddin's nephew Abdul Mannas shared his ordeal
with the media and said, "I got the notice in 2016. I have been visiting
Tribunals with all the relevant documents since.But my case was pending. Even
my wife and daughter were served notices the same year."The state of Assam
is presently struggling to define "indigenous Assamese". Assam Govt’s
first NRC draft included names of 1.90 crore people out of 3.29 crore
applications. The state cabinet sub-committee is scheduled to meet on July 23

35 lakh people facing exclusion from NRC due
to biased process after BJP came to power: fact-finding report
New Delhi: Thanks to the bias that crept into
the process for update of National Register of Citizens (NRC) after BJP came to
power in Assam in March 2016, around 35 lakh Bengali-speaking people, both
Muslims and Hindus, are facing the threat of exclusion from the list of bona
fide citizens, said a civil fact-finding team while releasing its report here
on Friday. That team, under banner of civil rights group United Against Hate,
was led by S.R. Darapuri, retired IG, Police, UP.Other members included social
activist Nadeem Khan and journalist Amit Sen Gupta.“Up till March 2016,verification
process was deemed to be fair and objective, according to widespread
perception, including within the civil society. Its rules and guidelines were
apparently being followed. Post April 2016 elections, with BJP coming to power,
difficulties, problems and accusations of bias began to stalk Assam,” the team
said in its report.NRC is being prepared under supervision of the SC.However,
at various verification centres, local NRC officials are not accepting
documents with minor typo errors and even some of the genuine and accepted
documents of citizenship. Moreover, many are not getting notice in time to
submit the documents. The SC has set 30 July as deadline for release of final
draft of NRC.Addressing a press conference in Delhi on Friday while releasing
the fact-finding report, S.R. Darapuri said there are several lapses in issuing
the notice process to the people. “They don’t get notice in time,” he
said.“People are in favour of NRC but the process is faulty and biased. So,
people feel that they are not getting justice and are being deprived of their
rights. People who have been declared as D-Voters (doubtful voters) have

Guwahati: Rattled by widespread protests in
Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, RSS has temporarily
shelved the plan to support granting citizenship to a section of non-Muslim
citizens from neighbouring countries.In the last two months, a series of
meetings held in New Delhi among the organisation’s top echelon and
functionaries from Assam has reportedly convinced the leadership about the
pitfalls of tabling the Bill in parliament.Informed sources in the RSS claimed
that there was no scope for the Bill to come up in any of the parliament
sessions ahead of the general elections next year.“If tabled in parliament, the
situation in Assam could take a turn for the worse, with adverse consequences
for the elections next year. Moreover, the majority of activists from the
Brahmaputra valley in the state have voiced their opposition to the Bill,” a
senior functionary of RSS’s Guwahati chapter said. However, he added, there was
overwhelming support for the Bill from the functionaries in the state’s
Bengali-dominated Barak valley.In an interview to The Hindu last month, JPC
chairperson Rajendra Agarwal ruled out the possibility of submitting the report

New Delhi:All India Muslim Personal Law Board
(AIMPLB) has decided not to contest if the Supreme Court scraps Section 377 of
IPC that criminalises homosexuality. The board has also decided to no longer be
part of the court hearings in the matter that resume Tuesday. on Friday, AIMPLB
member and senior advocate Yusuf Muchhala said: “We are not going to appear in
the matter leaving it to the court to decide.”Muchhala added: “Whether section
377 is unconstitutional or not should be read down by the court so that the
people indulging into same-sex relationships are not criminalised. Let it be
clear that it is only on the decriminalisation issue that we are not
participating, and not beyond that, let the court decide (on it), whichever way
it goes.”The SC is hearing a batch of petitions challenging Section 377 while
also reviewing its earlier verdict banning IPC section.AIMPLB has earlier

statement."In a country where Muslims are the second largest community,
these statements may lead to civil war," Sharad said.Nasir at a press

Ministry’s decision to set up a social media hub for monitoring online data,
the Supreme Court on Friday said the Govt wanting to tap citizens’ WhatsApp messages is
“like creating a surveillance state”, according to PTI. The top court has
sought Govt’s response in the matter within 2 weeks.The SC issued notice to
Centre on a plea by TMC MLA Mahua Moitra and sought Attorney General KK
Venugopal’s assistance in the matter. “Govt wants to tap citizens’ WhatsApp
messages.It will be like creating a surveillance state,” a bench of CJI Dipak
Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said.Senior advocate AM
Singhvi, who appeared for Moitra, said the Govt has issued a request for proposal and the
tender will be opened on August 20. “They want to monitor social media content
with the help of this social media hub,” PTI quoted Singhvi as saying.The court
listed the matter for further hearing on August 3.On June 18, the Supreme Court
had refused to accord urgent hearing on the plea seeking to stay a central Govt
move to set up a ‘Social Media
Communication Hub’ that would collect and analyse digital and social media
content. Counsel for Moitra had said that the Govt is trying to monitor social media content of
individuals by tracking their social media accounts such as those on Twitter,
Facebook and Instagram, and their e-mails.
Divide within Malaysian Govt as Indian origin ministers raise Zakir Naik

Delhi:A week after Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad had declared that Zakir Naik
will not be deported, members of his own cabinet have differed from this
decision.On Friday, one of parties, DAP, of the alliance Govt, Pakatan Harapan
(Alliance of Hope), raised the issue of Zakir and his extradition request by
India during the cabinet meeting with the Malaysian PM.Malaysian Human
Resources Minister M Kula Segaran, in a press statement, said that he alongwith
fellow ministers Gobind Singh Deo and Xavier Jayakumar had also raised the
issue at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.Raising the issue of legality and
rule of law, the minister said that they will ask the Attorney General if there
is any formal request from India. If a request has been made then they will
follow rule of law. Sweeping statements and unilateral decisions will not be
acceptable is what the minister hinted at directing his comment to Mahathirs
decision to not deport Naik. This is the right way of doing things, it is not
right for the Govt nor one man to decide
this matter, it should be decided by law in the courts as they have the duty to

Non-residents of Agra detained for praying at
Taj Mahal mosque after SC order
Agra: In violation of the Supreme Court order
that bars “outsiders” (non-residents of Agra) from offering namaz at a mosque
in the Taj Mahal monument complex, two Muslim youths from Maharashtra offered
prayers there on Friday. On July 9, the Supreme Court had upheld the order of
the Agra administration which said that non-residents of Agra would not be
allowed to enter the mosque for offering customary prayers on Friday due to
security concerns. According to information, 2 Muslim youths, Aasif Yusuf Khan,
27, and Mukhtar Ali Noor Ali Syed, 27, who hail from Jalgaon city of
Maharashtra, reached the West Gate of Taj Mahal today, at the time of the namaz
around 1:30 pm.In a written statement, the two men said that they saw many
Muslims entering the Taj Mahal complex for offering prayers and they followed
them.Security personnel at the West Gate checked them thoroughly but no one
asked them for their identity cards.They further clarified that they were not
aware of any order banning entry of outsiders from prayers. But when the two
men were coming out from the Taj Mahal after offering prayers, some security
personnel noticed them due to their different outfits and appearance and
inquired about their identity cards. The men then apologised and pleaded

Shia Waqf Board told the Supreme Court that it
wished to settle the matter of Babri Masjid-Ram Temple dispute in Ayodhya
amicably. However, a lawyer for one of the appellants reportedly argued that
the board had no locus to speak in the case.Senior Advocate Rajiv Dhawan,
appearing for M Siddiq — an appellant in the suit who has died but is
represented through his legal heir — argued that just as the Taliban had
destroyed the Buddha statues in Bamiyan in Afghanistan, the ‘Hindu Taliban’ had
destroyed Babri Masjid, reported ANI.The matter is being heard by the bench
comprising of CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S Abdul Nazeer.The

New Delhi: Central Shia Waqf Board on Friday
informed the Supreme Court that it was the real claimant of the one-third
Muslim share of land in the disputed structure at Ayodhya as the Babri Masjid
was built by Mir Baqi, a Shia. Senior counsel SN Singh, appearing for the Shia
Board, said: “We want to donate one-third land granted to Muslims by the
Allahabad high court to Hindus for building the Ram temple. For the unity,
integrity, peace and harmony of this great country, the Shia Waqf Board is in
favour of donating the Muslim share of land to the Hindus for Ram temple.”In a
brief affidavit, the Shia board said a mosque could be built in a
Muslim-dominated area at a reasonable distance from the revered place of birth
of Lord Ram in Ayodhya.In a statement issued in Lucknow, Shia Waqf Board
chairman Wasim Rizvi asked the Sunni Waqf Board to give up its claim on the
Shia property in Ayodhya and instead play a positive role in amicably resolving
the temple-mosque disputes in Kashi and Mathura. Appearing for M. Siddiq, the
main petitioner, senior counsel Rajeev Dhavan said in the SC that Shia Waqf

Hyderabad: BJP on Saturday denied that party
president Amit Shah said that the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya will
begin before 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It was reported earlier that Shah made
the statement in a meeting of party leaders in Hyderabad. Shah told the
gathering that steps will be taken to ensure the construction of the temple
before 2019 Lok Sabha polls, reported IANS. Hitting back, MIM chief Asaduddin
Owaisi asked if Shah will write the judgement even when the Supreme Court is
deciding the title dispute and whether Masjid is an essential feature of Islam.
He even suggested that the judgement should be given after 2019 elections to

UP not to provide free NCERT books to aided
madrassas
Bareilly: Months after making NCERT books
compulsory for all affiliated madrassas from this academic session, the state Govt
has now said that it will not be
providing free books to aided minority institutes. There are 560 Govt -aided
madrassas in UP and their students or managements will have to personally bear
the expense of NCERT textbooks. Rahul Gupta, registrar of UP Board of Madrassa
Education, said, “Students and managements of 560 aided madrassas will have to
purchase these books at their own expense. It has already been made clear that
question papers will be set from NCERT books for modern subjects and Urdu.
These books can be downloaded from NCERT website or can be directly bought from
vendors.”From this academic, NCERT books have been made compulsory for modern
subjects like mathematics, science, English, computer science and social
science. A letter issued by Monika Garg, principal secretary, UP Minority
Welfare Department, on May 30 to all district minority welfare officers, said
that the UP Board of Madrassa Education has included NCERT books in the
syllabus from 2018-19 academic session “to improve quality and bring uniformity
in modern education among minority institutions”. Meanwhile, the Govt -aided
madrassas will continue to receive free books for class 1-8 from basic
education council. However, teachers say that these books are of hardly any use
as exam papers will be based on NCERT syllabus. Deewan Saheb Jaman Khan, state
general secretary of Teachers’ Association Madaris-e-Arabia UP , said, “After
NCERT books were made compulsory, we thought that the Govt will provide these textbooks for free. There
is no point of providing basic education council books to students when exam
papers will be set from NCERT books. Majority of students in madrassas come

Nirana in UP's Muzaffarnagar district is in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Police complaints have been filed over some strange reasons — on Muslim boys
hitting balls into people's homes while playing cricket in a cemetery and then
entering the premises to fetch them, and also on people claiming that
motorcycle-borne youths were disrupting marriage baraats.In the first case, the
families whose homes were being "invaded" claimed that there was more
to the Muslim boys coming into their houses than just game. A few families
claimed other forms of disturbance. An FIR was filed over these incidents two
weeks ago. While the police asked the complainants to talk and settle the
issues amicably, it has deployed a sizable number of officers in Nirana as a
precaution.Muzaffarnagar is a communally sensitive region, which witnessed
deadly riots in 2013. It was in this district that the issue of migration of
people from one community — allegedly for communal reasons — became a critical
issue in 2017 Assembly elections. Muzaffarnagar is now witnessing a similar
situation, with about 10 families belonging to one community claiming that they
have been threatened with consequences unless they leave the village.The walls
of a few houses in Nirana bear the message "yeh makaan bikau hain (this

Kerala: IS suspect denies allegations
Kozhikode: Thasleem Abdurehman KOP, a youth
from Kannur who is suspected to be the ‘finance agent’ of the Islamic State
(IS) has denied the allegation levelled against him by the investigating
agencies. In a Facebook post on July 9, Thasleem who was working in the Gulf,
said he collected the money from Manaf and handed over to Shajil, the IS cadres
from Kannur who are believed to have been killed in Syria, without knowing the
actual intention. Police had said that Thasleem had arranged money for Shajil
to help him travel to Syria. In the post, Thasleem agreed that Manaf had handed
over a few US dollars to him while he was in Dubai in August 2016. Manaf had
asked him to handle the money as per his instruction. In October, Manaf sent a
message asking him to give 4,000 USD to Shajil, who will arrive in Dubai.
Thaleem said he handed over 800 USD to another friend of Manaf while he was in
Kannur. “I transferred the remaining Rs 40,000 to an account after I returned
to the Gulf. I would not have done the transaction using my ID if I realized
that I would land in trouble. There are numerous illegal money transaction
channels in the Gulf,” Thasleem said in his post. Thasleem also denied the
police’s charge that there is a case against him in a police station in
Fujairah for illegally collecting money for building a mosque. “Which NRI would
donate money without the letter pad or receipt of the mosque committee?” he

vaccinated, mosques in Gujarat are creating awareness in the community about

hands with doctors on Friday to deliver a message in their sermons about the
need to administer vaccines to children. Baroda Muslim Doctor’s Association and

JNU accused of sexual harassment from SC-empowered Environment Pollution
(Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA), which is tasked with taking various
measures to tackle air pollution.Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate
Change announced the removal of Atul Kumar Johri from EPCA, a professor at
JNU's School of Life Sciences, in an order issued on 4 July.Johri was arrested
in March for allegedly sexually harassing several female students. He is

New Delhi:As registrations for the next
semester at JNU begin Monday, research scholars applying will be required to
sign an undertaking declaring that they are not employed. The information was
revealed in a circular dated July 11, signed by Deputy Registrar (Evaluation).
The move has drawn the ire of a section of students and teachers, who said the
decision is against the university ordinances.“All Deans of Schools of
Studies/Chairpersons of Special Centres/ Chairpersons of Centres are requested
to take an undertaking from each student at the time of his/her registration
with their School/Special Centre/Centres concerned for any programme of study

Israeli air raids kill two Palestinian teens
in Gaza
At least 2 teenagers in the Gaza Strip have
been killed by Israeli air raids, according to Palestinian health officials, as
Israel carried out the largest daylight attack on the besieged enclave since
the 2014 war.Amir al-Nimri, 15, and Luay Kaheel, 16, died of their wounds on
Saturday shortly after an air strike targeted al-Kutaiba, an area in western
Gaza, the health ministry said.12 others were wounded by the attack.The
al-Kutaiba square is adjacent to a park frequently visited by families over the
weekend, especially during the summer months, witnesses told Al Jazeera.
"That's why so many civilians have been hurt in the latest strike,"

24 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to life imprisonment over charges
of inciting violence and terrorizing citizens, official news agency MENA
reported.Life sentence in Egypt is 25 years in prison.The case dates back to
2014, when 27 people affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood organized a march in
the Delta province of Sharqiya. They were accused of throwing incendiary
bottles, committing sabotage, hindering the traffic and distributing booklets

Details about Saudi Arabia’s arrest of the
prominent Islamic scholar Safar Al-Hawali and 3 of his sons have been revealed
by activists on social networking sites. Al-Hawali was detained on Thursday,
just a few days after the publication of his book, Muslims and Western Culture,
in which he attacks the policies of the current Saudi Govt , especially its
rapprochement with the US, UAE and Egyptian regime of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. Twitter
account operated by “Prisoners of Conscience” explained that the officers who
arrested Al-Hawali at dawn on Thursday arrived at his home in the village of
Hawala with an ambulance. This proves, they insisted, that the authorities were
well aware of his critical health condition — he suffered a brain haemorrhage
in 2005 and still suffers from its effects — but still took him to prison.At
the same time, the Saudis also arrested Al-Hawali’s brother, Shaikh Saadallah,
in what was described as a “barbaric” manner, which frightened his family. He
was taken by masked officers to an unknown destination; nothing has been heard
about him since.Quoting unspecified sources, the account on Twitter claimed
that the authorities separated Shaikh Safar Al-Hawali from his sons in prison.
He was transferred to Riyadh, while his sons were taken to Jeddah.In his book,
the 68-year-old scholar discussed the internal differences between the members

Death toll in Balochistan suicide bombing
reaches 130
Peshawar:The toll from the deadliest attack on
a campaign rally in Pakistan's restive Balochistan reached 130 today as the
country's security establishment was under pressure to improve security and
intelligence gathering to avoid further election carnage.At least 20 of the
injured among over 200 people are reported to be in critical condition.
Militants yesterday targeted a gathering of Balochistan Awami Party (BAP)
leader Siraj Raisani in the Mastung area in troubled province, killing at least
128 people and injuring over 200 others. Raisani, who was a candidate from
PB-35 (Mastung), was among those killed in the attack.With 2 more deaths, the
number of casualties mounted to 135 in the yesterday's twin attacks in
Balochistan and KP provinces. Normal life remained disrupted and business

Islamabad :Maryam Nawaz, daughter of
Pakistan’s disgraced former premier Nawaz Sharif, who was imprisoned with her
father, has rejected an offer for better facilities in jail.Sharif, 68, and
Maryam, 44, were taken into custody in the Avenfield corruption case, shortly
after their arrival at Lahore airport from London last night.They were flown to
Islamabad on a special aircraft and then were taken to the Adiala Jail in
separate armoured personnel carriers escorted by police convoys. Coming from a
rich family, Maryam is entitled to a ‘B-Class’ jail, which lists facilities
like a mattress, table and chair, ceiling fan, 21-inch TV and a newspaper, all
at personal cost.However, she refused and her handwritten and signed letter is
widely circulated on media. It reads, “I was offered better class facilities by
the superintendent of the jail, as per the rules, that I refused of my own
will. This is purely my own decision, taken without any pressure from
