I&B ministry to snoop on emails and
profile Twitter users
With less than a year to go for the general
election, the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is setting up a
social media monitoring hub. The tender inviting bids by Broadcast Engineering
Consultants India Ltd. closed on May 31.Bids have been invited from Indian
companies with the capability of developing analytical tools in order to:Create
digital profiles of citizens,Monitor digital platforms like Twitter, YouTube,
Google+, Instagram, Linkedin, Flickr, blogs and email among others,Listen to
email conversations,Create a ‘conversation archive’ of users,Create a
geographical analysis with exact locations,Classify Internet info as positive,
negative and neutral,Produce actionable analytical data on users and,Produce
predictive analysis of potential headlines in media channels and newspapers
across the globe. BECIL tender document also calls for 20 social media
analytics executives to produce six reports every day for the ministry. The
document says that each of the 716 districts in the country will have a social
media executive to track local news and events. While the I&B Ministry has
maintained a Sphinx-like silence on the issue, cyber experts have rung alarm
bells. Listening to emails, profiling social media users, they say, point to
possible misuse of such data in elections. In the absence of a law to ensure
data protection or prescribe the process of obtaining consent from users, the
attempt to monitor social media and profile users would amount to invasion of
privacy, they said. The Government is behaving like the Orwellian Big Brother,
says Congress leader and lawyer Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi. While nine judges of
the Supreme Court has upheld the fundamental right to privacy and despite
Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution, the Information Technology Act etc.
protecting the citizen’s privacy and human rights, he added, the Government
appears determined to turn the country into a surveillance state. In the entire
tender document of 66 pages, he points out, there is not a single safeguard
mentioned. In fact the document says that the vendor would have to supply the
Meta Data as well.nationalheraldindia

enables “decision-makers in various departments of government to scrutinise
source of foreign funds and their actual use in India”.“The tool gives them

Modi govt trying to invade people’s privacy by
creating social media hub: Congress
New Delhi:Alleging that the Modi government
was “acting like a big brother” and trying to invade the privacy of people, the
Congress on Friday claimed that the Information and Broadcasting ministry had
floated Rs 42-crore tender to “snoop and put on surveillance” the social media
activities of the users.Addressing a news conference, Congress spokesperson
Abhishek Manu Singhvi accused the government of “flouting the Right to Privacy
with brazen impunity.” “We find a very curious Rs 42-crore tender under which
bids are invited from private agencies. This is the worst example of using the
taxpayers’ money to snoop on them. The tender is for so-called social media
communication hub creation,” he said.“It is the habitual, perennial,
repetitive, and ingrained tendency of this government to act as a ‘Super Big
Brother’ and to watch you and intrude every aspect of your life, body, and
every aspect of your privacy.”
Citizens’ register: Bangladesh not keen on
accepting deportees from India
Bangladesh would ask for local identity
documents from persons who India would deport once the second list of the
National Register of Citizens is made public on June 30, Dhaka's High
Commissioner to India, Syed Muazzem Ali, said on Thursday."The
deportations, as we exercise it, are for people who have crossed the border and
could give us some verification regarding their identity," Ali said during
his interaction with mediapersons at the India Women Press Corps in New
Delhi. The envoy said that Dhaka and New Delhi had a "peaceful
understanding" on Bangladesh's citizens who are in India
illegally."We have a peaceful understanding regarding people who have lost
their documents, who are either over-stayers or they have committed any trespassing.
We carry out a verification of those people," he said.A freedom fighter
who played a role in the 1971 Bangladesh War of Liberation, Ali went on,
"This is being done in various parts of India. Sometimes, consular
officers travel to cities like Kanpur, Nagpur and Chennai to verify
migrants."Bangladesh's envoy, however, refused to make a detailed comment
on the NRC issue, saying that he would make a statement once the process of
deportations start.Approximately 48 lakh residents of Assam, many Muslims
living in districts bordering Bangladesh, couldn't make it to the first list of
NRC which was released on Dec.31 last year."Most of the people whose names
didn't figure in the NRC live in the districts of Barpeta, Duburi, Nagaon,
South Cachar, Morigaon and Sonitpur," said Syed Azharuddin, Secretary of
Students Islamic Organisation of India, who is leading a fact-finding mission

Farmers’ agitation: Stir enters second day,
vegetable prices surge over dwindling supplies
New Delhi:Demanding remunerative prices for
their produce, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and
farm loan waivers among other things, farmers across the country continued
their agitation Saturday as part of a 10-day long nationwide strike. In the wake
of the dwindling fresh supplies of farm produce in mandis, vegetable prices at
various cities in Punjab and Haryana soared even as the farmers dumped
vegetables, milk on roads and blocked supplies to cities. On Friday, agitating
farmers stopped supply of vegetables, fruits, milk and other items to various
cities against the alleged anti-farmer policies of the Centre.Though the impact
of farmers’ stir on price of farm commodities was not visible yesterday, the
retail prices of vegetables in several cities climbed in the range of Rs 10-20
per kg on the second day, forcing consumers in cities to pay more for buying
vegetables.indianexpress

While the stone throwers have been charged for attempt to murder and rioting,
the CRPF driver has been charged with rash driving. The incident in Srinagar's
Nowhatta area, just a few days before Home Minister Rajnath Singh is to visit
the valley, could dampen the centre's renewed efforts to reach out to Kashmiri
youth after announcing the Ramzan truce with terrorists.Singh had planned to
use his visit to not only review preparations for the Amarnath Yatra due to
begin on June 29 but more importantly, signal his intent to engage with all
stakeholders including the Hurriyat leaders. The outrage over the latest
incident could overshadow the outreach.A police officer said the incident took

Haryana: 3 days after mosque vandalised,
villagers say all is well now after 'Muslims agree to use loudspeakers at low
volume'
THREE DAYS after a bunch of Hindu youths
allegedly disrupted evening namaz at the mosque in Newal village, Karnal,
resulting in tension, both the sides have reached a ‘panchayati raazinama’
(compromise). The police have also put any further action on hold against six
youths of the village, who were booked in connection with the incident.
However, officials said, “a probe was on”. Objecting to the ‘high volume’ of
loudspeakers during evening namaz, a group of youngsters of the village had
allegedly damaged loudspeakers on the mosque premises Wednesday. The village,
with a population of around 4000, is located barely 10 km from Uttar Pradesh’s
border, is dominated by Hindus. There are only 10 Muslim families living in the
village since Partition. A few Christian families are also settled in the
village and a church is being constructed.“This is the first time such an
incident has happened. Peace and harmony had always prevailed in our village,”
says Yakub Ali, a blacksmith.“We reached a compromise as the village panchayat
was held and both the sides gave in writing that the village’s peace and
harmony would not be disrupted”, Yakub told The Indian Express. However, he
added, “Yesterday, a slanderous video was uploaded by somebody on Facebook. In
the video, villagers were passing inflammatory remarks at Muslims inviting
reactions from the viewers. We have informed the police about it”, Ali
added.“There is a temple and gurdwara in the village, where loudspeakers are
used in morning and evening hours. Nobody objects to high volume there. There
are some miscreants who incited a group of youth to disrupt namaz. Police know
about those people”, Ali said.Imam of the mosque, Ahmad Ashfaq, said, “Nearly
two months ago, a villager who was apparently drunk asked me to remove the
loudspeaker from the mosque. He also used foul language. But I took it
lightly.”Recalling the Wednesday’s incident, a 14-year-old boy, Mohammad Usama,
who has come to the village from Uttar Pradesh to deliver a religious lecture,
said, “It was scary… the manner in which 15-20 persons entered the mosque, went
to the rooftop and damaged loudspeakers.”Haryana DGP BS Sandhu, said, “I have
learnt that a compromise has been reached between the 2 parties.”Village’s
sarpanch Harbhajan Singh, said, “Peace prevails in the village. It was an unfortunate
incident”. Former sarpanch, Pintu Naik, said, “They [Muslims] have agreed to
use loudspeakers at low volume”.indianexpress

GOVERNMENT IN KARNATAKA, JOINTLY FIGHT 2019 LOK SABHA POLLS
BENGALURU: Congress and Janata Dal (Secular)

Karnataka. They have also agreed, in written, to fight the next Lok Sabha

majority in the house, leading to the formation of coalition government of
Congress and JD-S. Congress supported JD-S chief H.D. Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister
and one of its leaders as his Deputy to keep the BJP away from the power.
Kumaraswamy was sworn-in as CM and G. Parameswara of Congress as Deputy Chief

Exclusive: Congress-BSP Alliance for MP Polls
Nearly Done and Dusted, Says Kamal Nath
In a historic first, the Congress party will
have an electoral pact with Mayawati’s BSP in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh
polls. The Congress and BSP are also planning a similar tie-up in Rajasthan and
Chhattisgarh.amal Nath, the newly-appointed Congress chief for MP, confirmed
this to The Wire and said he was the one negotiating with Mayawati. The alliance
with BSP is done and dusted in principle and the Congress has already got the
Gondwana Gantantra Party – which has a tiny hold in eastern MP – on board with
the alliance. For the past 20 years, Mayawati has polled a steady 7% vote share
across Madhya Pradesh. If you add the Congress vote share in the last elections
– 37% – then the Congress and BSP alliance is likely to give the BJP a jolt.
The BJP polled 45% of the votes and is facing huge anti-incumbency in MP after
being in power for three terms. A recent Lokniti-CSDS survey suggests that
anti-incumbency in MP is much worse than in Rajasthan.thewire
