also praised Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi’s “leadership” amid mounting
criticism of an alleged state-sponsored persecution of the minority Muslim
community, forcing an estimated 1.25 lakh people to flee to Bangladesh and
India.Myanmar has an estimated 1.1 million Rohingya people.“We share your
concerns about extremist violence in Rakhine state and violence against
security forces and how innocent lives have been affected,” Modi said in a
joint statement with Suu Kyi at Myanmar’s capital Nay Pyi Taw.“We hope that all
stakeholders together can find a way out in which unity and territorial
integrity of Myanmar is respected,” he said, adding “peace, justice, dignity
and democratic values for all” can be achieved. Suu Kyi, the de-facto leader of
Buddhist-majority Myanmar, thanked India for taking a strong stand on the
“terror threat” faced by her country.She said India and Myanmar jointly can
ensure that terrorism is not allowed to take root on their soil or on the soil

bilateral visit on Tuesday, Rohingya Muslims gathered at Jantar Mantar to
protest against the atrocities being committed on their community.Raising
slogans such as “Stop the genocide” and “UNO, break your silence”, these
refugees fled from their country and came to India in order to save
themselves.25-year-old Nazeer Ahmed came to India 5 years ago. Saying he had no
other option but to flee from his country Myanmar, he accused the Burmese Govt of treating Rohingya Muslims worse than
animals. “I have come here only to tell the rest of the world about the cruelty
that is being inflicted upon us in Burma. Has humanity completely left this
planet?” he questions.“Burmese Govt does
not even allow us to make phone calls. If they see a phone in our hands, they
call us terrorists and put us in jail. They then ask for 20 to 25 lakh as bail
amount. The amount is always higher than what we can pay. If they don’t get the
amount they asked for, they kill those in custody,” Nazeer said.Nazeer is
living in Delhi with his parents and two brothers. He recounted the story of
the time when he was travelling to India from his country.Noor Qasim is another
Rohingya Muslim who came to India in 2012. His family is still back home and
were the victims of the latest violence that began on Aug.25 in Myanmar’s northwestern
Rakhine state. “Our slum back home was torched. My mother and sister ran away
into the jungle in order to save themselves. They come out during the day and

Begum, a 27-year-old Rohingya refugee living in Rajeev Nagar colony in Jaipur

families living in the rented homes in the city’s Hasanpura, Hathroi and Rajeev
Nagar areas to vacate their homes immediately. This came a week after Kiren
Rijiju, the minister of state for home affairs, told the parliament that “the Govt
has issued detailed instruction for
deportation of illegal foreign nationals including Rohingyas” and noted that
over 14,000 Rohingyas, registered with the UNHCR, are presently living in the

Myanmar has been laying landmines across a
section of its border with Bangladesh for the past three days, according to
reports citing two Govt sources in the
Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka.The sources say the purpose may be to prevent the
return of Rohingya Muslims fleeing the violence.Bangladesh will on Wednesday
formally lodge a protest against the laying of landmines so close to the
border, the sources - who had direct knowledge of the situation but asked not
to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter - told Reuters."They
are putting the landmines in their territory along the barbed-wire fence"
between a series of border pillars, one of the sources told Reuters.Both
sources said Bangladesh learned about the landmines mainly through photographic
evidence and informers."Our forces have also seen three to four groups

Wednesday, Bangladeshi border guards have said.Authorities, according to AP,

Crack down on cow vigilantism, SC to States,
Centre; asks states to appoint nodal officer to curb vigilantism
New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked
all States and Union Territories to appoint nodal police officers district-wise
to crack down on and prosecute cow vigilante groups that engage in violence and
mayhem. 4 BJP-ruled States — Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat —
accepted the SC's suggestion to appoint dedicated nodal police officers in the
rank of DSP to prevent cow vigilantes or gau rakshaks, as they call themselves,
from "taking the law or becoming the law unto themselves."According
to PTI report, the SC on Wednesday directed all state Govt s to appoint a
senior police officer as a nodal officer in each district to ensure that
incidents of cow vigilantism are prevented and dealt with effectively. It has
also directed the chief secretaries of every state Govt to file a status report giving details of the
actions taken to prevent incidents of cow vigilantism.A 3-judge Bench of Chief
Justive Dipak Misra, Amitava Roy, and A.M. Khanwilkar was hearing an
intervention by Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, about the lack
of responsibility and accountability shown by the Centre and State
administrations even as cow vigilantes wreaked havoc and resorted to murder in
broad daylight in the name of the cow.Dalits and Muslims have been at the
receiving end of a rash of violence unleashed by lynch mobs, especially in the
northern States.The court directed the Centre to respond to a submission by
senior advocate Indira Jaising for Gandhi that the Centre cannot wash their hands
of its constitutional responsibility under Article 256 to instruct the States
to take "necessary" steps in law to save innocent human lives from
fury of the mobs.The court said the Centre should reply to this argument made
by Gandhi in the spirit of "co-operative federalism".
"Non-violence is the founding faith of this country. The Centre cannot
turn its back on the violence. The States have the responsibility to lodge FIRs
against these vigilantes," Ms. Jaising submitted. "You have to stop
it (violence)," Chief Justice Misra told Additional Solicitor General
Tushar Mehta, appearing for the four northern States.The court asked Mehta to
take instructions from the Centre, to specify its role under Article 256 and
the steps it would take from its side to prevent any future incidents of
violence.Pointing out that most of the violent incidents had occurred on
highways, Ms. Jaising said the States should take steps to initiate highway
patrolling.The court directed Chief Secretaries and the DGPs of States to consult
each other and respond to the court. The Centre shall also indicate its views
on this issue.The SC posted the case for hearing on Sept.22.In the previous
hearing, the Centre said ending vigilantism and violence by cow protection

Sadar police station area of Bihar’s Madhepura district after some people
noticed animal carcasses in a canal on Monday afternoon. As word spread, a
crowd collected at the spot and began alleging that the parts were of cattle,
whose slaughter is prohibited. “When the local administration reached the spot,
the mob did not pay heed to their appeals for calm. They overturned the SDM’s
vehicle and pushed it into the canal. Reinforcements were called and senior
officials reached the spot before the situation was brought under control,”

India and Press Association. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Indian
Writers’ Forum pledged to continue Lankesh’s fight. ”The forum condemns the

Lankesh on Tuesday night outside her residence in Bengaluru has sent shockwaves
across the country. The Karnataka journalist had been vocal against right-wing
forces and Hindutva politics. Gauri Lankesh, an editor who had bravely
criticised fascist forces, political powers and helped bring Maoists to the
mainstream was shot at point blank range at her house on Tuesday evening. Known
to be a staunch supporter of student politics, Gauri Lankesh was a mentor to
many student activists and had often referred to JNU student leader Kanhaiya
Kumar as her adopted son. Hours after she was shot, Jignesh Mevani, the Dalit
leader from Gujarat, expressed shock at the incident. Saying that she paid the
price for being fearless and doing every bit to fight against Sangh and BJP,
Jignesh said that the fascist forces will "kill each and every voice of
dissent." Sharing anecdotes of his close engagement with Gauri over the
years, Jignesh said, "She would always tell people that Jignesh is my good
son and Kanhaiya is my bad son. She would love both of us equally. I can't
believe that I won't be able to see her again. I won't be able to take khakhara
from Gujarat for her ever again. This is a major loss for the civil society of
Karnataka. This is the murder of democracy and rationality. Down with dark
devil forces who killed such a beautiful soul...Gauri you will always and

Ahmed. The court’s direction came on examination of the status report filed

tension in Gujarat, while in Goa be warned of spiked drinks, the latest
advisory for British tourists to India has cautioned. The advisory issued by
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Tuesday also asks tourists, especially
women travellers to respect local customs and dresses, as well as avoid
visiting remote and unlit beaches after dark. In its advisory for the Western
Indian region, the advisory asks tourists to stay away from the India-Pakistan
border, while also suggesting caution while travelling within Gujarat.“There
continues to be some inter communal tension in Gujarat which can lead to isolated
incidents of violence,” the advisory states. Commenting about Goa, one of the
most favourite beach tourism destinations for tourists from Britain, the
advisory states that “there have been a few serious incidents involving British

New Delhi: Dowry, love affairs and impotency
were among the reasons for the deaths of over 1,400 farmers in India this year,
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said on Friday. “According to NCRB,
causes of (farmer) suicides include family problems, illness, drugs... dowry,
love affairs and impotency,” he told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a
question as to what caused the death of so many farmers in the
country.Minister’s reply, however, did not rule out debt as one of the
reasons.The remarks on suicide by over 1,400 farmers in the last one year, by Govt’s
own admission, are bound to provide fresh fodder to a belligerent opposition,
which has been targeting Modi Govt on

almost 99 per cent of the banned notes back into the system and the economy
gripped by slowdown, the former Governor of the RBI, Raghuram Rajan, has said
that if a decision such as this turns out exposed — of not having the right
effects on the economy, “as a country, you would want to ask what were the
inputs that went into that decision”.
Although the Govt announced it
was withdrawing 500 and 1,000 rupee notes on November 8 last year, Rajan, who
was Governor until September 4, 2016, was asked by the Govt in February that year for his views on
demonetisation, which he says he provided orally.In his new book, I do what I
do, launched here Tuesday, Rajan says he had conveyed to the Govt that though there could be long-term benefits,
the likely short-term economic cost would outweigh them and that there were
potentially better alternatives to achieve the main goals.He has also said that
the RBI put together a note to the Govt outlining the potential cost and benefit of
demonetisation as well as alternatives that could achieve similar aims besides
flagging off what would happen if the preparation was inadequate. He added that
