Suu Kyi condemns
'all human rights violations', says ready to begin verification process for
Rohingya refugees
Aung San Suu Kyi
said she "feels deeply" for the suffering of "all people"
caught up in conflict-torn Rakhine state in her first comments on the crisis
since the latest violence began last month. "We are concerned to hear the
number of Muslims fleeing areas to Bangladesh," she said in a televised
address on Tuesday, adding that Myanmar condemns any "human rights
violations" that may have exacerbated the crisis. Suu Kyi also said she was
"concerned" over Muslims and others who have fled to neighbouring
Bangladesh. On Monday, leaders from the UK, US, France, Canada and Australia had
urged Aung San Suu Kyi to push for an end to violence against the Rohingya. In
her address, Suu Kyi said "it is not the intention of the Myanmar Govt to apportion blame or to abnegate
responsibility", adding that Myanmar does not fear "international
scrutiny" over the Rohingya crisis. She invited outside observers to visit
Rakhine and see the problems in person." Security forces have been
instructed to adhere strictly to the code of conduct in carrying out security
operations, to exercise all due restraint and to take full measures to avoid
collateral damages and the harming of innocent civilians," she said."
Human rights violations and all other acts that impair stability and harmony
and undermine the rule of law will be addressed with strict norms of
justice," she said.Suu Kyi said that her country stood ready "at any
time" to verify the status of the Rohingya who have fled violence in the
last month to aid the return of those eligible for resettlement."We are
prepared to start the verification process at any time," she said
referring to those who have fled in the unprecedented exodus to Bangladesh,
without guaranteeing a return for all of the refugees. Al Jazeera's Scott
Heidler, who attended the speech at Naypyidaw, said Suu Kyi "expressed
good faith" in vowing to repatriate citizens of Myanmar from
Bangladesh. But he added that "the majority of the Rohingya are not treated
as citizens in Myanmar and lack the proper documentation to begin with".

Rohingya refugees
who fled violence in Myanmar have dismissed leader Aung San Suu Kyi's stated
concern over their plight, as activists accused her Govt of "burying their heads in the sand"
over violence tearing through Rakhine state. In a sprawling and squalid camp on
the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, Rohingya refugees on Tuesday rejected Suu Kyi's
claim that many members of their minority group were safe in Myanmar and said
her vow to repatriate displaced Rohingya carried no weight."Suu Kyi is a
traitor. We can't rely on her words," said Sultan Ahmed, who arrived in
Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh along with hundreds of thousands of refugees two
weeks ago.80-year-old told Al Jazeera that he did not believe the de facto
leader would act on her words because "everything is run and decided by
the army".Suu Kyi "is only a name there. Nobody cares about her,"
he said. She broke her silence on Tuesday, condemning "all human rights
violations" in Rakhine State, and vowing to take action against those who
commit abuses. However, she failed to comment on the military offensive that
sent more than 420,000 Rohingya pouring across the border into Bangladesh, an
operation the UN has branded as "ethnic cleansing".Abdul Hafiz, a
Rohingya man in Kutupalong, was angered by Suu Kyi's implication that Rohingya
were themselves responsible for their plight.Hafiz told AP, "They have
kept people in confinement. Let the world media know from them whether we are
tortured or living in joy." Shah Ahmed, a 60-year-old refugee who fled
Maungdaw in northern Rakhine State 2 weeks ago, said he also no longer trusted
Suu Kyi.Human rights groups were sceptical too, criticising Suu Kyi for failing
to condemn the army's alleged abuses, as well as her claim that army operations
had ceased on Sept.5."While it was positive to hear Suu Kyi condemn human
rights violations in Rakhine state, she is still silent about role of the
security forces," Amnesty said .Phil Robertson of HRW, referring to Suu
Kyi's assertion that military operations had ended, asked: "If that is
true, then who is burning all the villages we've seen in the past two
weeks?"Ronan Lee, a Rohingya researcher at Deakin University, said Suu
Kyi's speech was "deeply concerning from a humanitarian point of
view". It was likely to provide the military with "genuine solace and
certainty that she will not call on them to stop what they are doing," he
told Al Jazeera from Melbourne.

Rohingya crisis: UN
to investigate reports of ethnic cleansing of Muslims by Burmese military
UN has announced it
will investigate reports of mass killings, torture, sexual violence, and the
burning of Rohingya villages in Burma. The chairman of the fact-finding mission,
Marzuki Darusman asked the UNHRC for a further 6 months to investigate the
violence – taking it up to Sept.2018.He said the team "will go where the
evidence leads us" but warned that he still needs a clear signal from the
Burmese govt that they will be allowed into the country. He also called for Burmese
govt to release its own investigation in the violence in Rakhine state which
was completed in August. But the Burmese ambassador to the UN, Htin Lynn, said
the investigation was "not a helpful course of action" and said Burma
was taking proportionate security measures against terrorists to restore peace.
Darusman also said Rohingya people had faced "major atrocities" and
had been the subject of “dehumanizing propaganda”. He said: "There are
reports of landmines being planted on the border with Bangladesh that are
maiming and killing those trying to escape the violence, including children. “There
are also reports of dehumanizing propaganda that akin the Rohingya to
pests." Independent/ Anadolu agency

UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged Myanmar to halt its

New Delhi;“We’d
rather kill ourselves here than go back to Myanmar or Bangladesh… At least
there are graveyards here for us, unlike back there,” said a despondent
25-year-old Sohail Khan. On Monday, seated on a broken plastic chair outside a
tiny shop in Delhi’s Kanchan Kunj, where close to 50 Rohingya families have
been living since 2012, Khan said he has barely eaten in the last few days.
“Khauf hai, khaana kahan se khaayein?” he said.At Kanchan Kunj, semi-clad
children — covered in dust and giant mosquito bites — run around, as their
parents ponder about their impending future. “Look at these children, do they
look like terrorists? We love India… it’s only when we came here that we
realised what peace is, what living is, what laughing is. Why will we join
forces against India?” said Jaffar (27), who works as an office boy in a

Kerala: 10 months
after son was killed ‘for conversion’, father embraces Islam
Almost 10 months
after Anil Kumar, alias Faisal, 30, was hacked to death in Kerala’s Malappuram
district, allegedly by RSS activists after he converted to Islam, his father
Krishnan Nair has become a Muslim. Nair was the last in the family to embrace
Islam, the police said. The family comes from Kodinji village in Malappuram
district.Soon after Faisal was killed on Nove.19, 2016, his mother Meenakshi
had publicly dared the Sangh Parivar by converting to Islam. 2 months ago,
Faisal’s two sisters, one brother-in-law and their 5 children also converted.
Police sources said Nair, an upper-caste Hindu, converted into Islam two weeks
ago at Maunathul Islam Sabha in Ponnani in the district. Along with his wife,
daughters and grandchildren, Nair is said to be now undergoing a course for
newly converts at Markazul Hidya in Manjeri, Malappuram. To read this story in
Malayalam, click here.“Except one of Faizal’s brothers-in-law, Vinod, who is
one of the accused in his murder, all others in the family have converted to
Islam. The Muslim community considered Faisal as a martyr and ensured all
support for his family members. This worked as a trigger for their
conversions,’’ a police official said.Faisal, who worked as a driver in Riyadh,
had converted to Islam in 2015 in the Saudi Arabian capital. In August 2016,
his wife Priya (now Jesni) and three minor children also converted, which had
allegedly enraged Sangh Parivar members in the region. Following Faisal’s
killing, 12 RSS and BJP workers were arrested, among them the victim’s
brother-in-law. After their interrogation, the police had said that the killers
feared Faisal would have triggered more conversions in the family. indianexpress

Kerala State
Women’s Commission on Monday said it would only reveal to the Supreme Court whether
Hadiya, a 26-year-old Hindu woman who converted to Islam and subsequently
married a Muslim youth, faced severe human rights violations, including
forcible detention, at her parent’s home. The commission had opened an inquiry
into the allegation that Ms. Hadiya’s parents flagrantly violated her
fundamental rights after the High Court had placed her in their custody after
annulling her marriage. The complainants, including 1,000 members of the Girls

Economic slowdown
is real, not just technical: SBI Research
Mumbai: Noting that
the economy has been on a downslide since Sept. 2016, SBI Research on Tuesday
said the slowdown is real and not technical and called for more public spending
to arrest the slide.“We certainly believe that we are in a slowdown mode since
Sept.2016 and a slowdown that has been prolonged to Q1 of this fiscal year is
technically not short-term in nature or even transient,”SBI Research said in a
report. Continuing slowdown has “raised the spectre of whether slowdown is
temporary or not” but stopped short of answering the question. The note comes
days after BJP president Amit Shah attributed the slowdown — GDP growth slid
for the sixth quarter in a row to hit a three-year low at 5.7% in the June
quarter — to “technical reasons” without elaborating on the same. Shah had said
growth had gone up to 7.1% after falling to 4.7% in FY14 when UPA was in power.PTI

talks after Hamas agreed to steps towards resolving a decade-long split with
its West Bank-based rival Fatah. Nabil Shaath, a senior adviser to Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas, told journalists in the West Bank city of Ramallah

control over ministries as a first step towards implementing a larger
agreement."We await the first steps on the ground. We want to see Mr
Hamdallah received by Hamas, the door to all the ministries open," he
said. "That really could happen in the next 24 hours."Hamdallah has
not visited Gaza since 2015, and a previous attempt at a unity Govt fell apart that year, with the two sides
exchanging blame. The head of the Arab League on Monday hailed the steps taken
by Hamas and called for full reconciliation. In a statement, Hamas called on
Abbas to "take urgent steps to cancel all his punitive decisions and
measures against our people in the Strip". aljazeera

Palestinians decry
church patriarch's role in land deal
Occupied East
Jerusalem - Greek Orthodox Church has been plunged into a renewed crisis in the
Holy Land as its leaders are accused of selling off land to extremist Jewish
settlers in prime locations in Jerusalem's Old City.Hundreds of Palestinians
rallied in the city this month to call for the removal of Patriarch Theophilos
III, claiming that he had colluded with a settler organisation. The settler
group, Ateret Cohanim, has been working for decades to evict Palestinians from
their homes and shops in the Old City, including around important holy sites
such as the al-Aqsa Mosque compound. The land deal, initiated back in 2004,
brought down Theophilos's predecessor, Irineos, more than a decade ago after he
sold an option for a 198-year lease on three strategically located properties
in the Old City to front companies representing Ateret Cohanim. Secret tape
recordings of Ateret Cohanim officials have in the past raised concerns that
Israel is strong-arming each new Greek Orthodox Patriarch into selling land by refusing
to agree to recognise his appointment until he cooperates with the settler
group. aljazeera

Polls suggest jump
in German far-right party's support
Germany's
right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ramped up attacks
against immigration and Islam as its poll ratings jumped in the final stretch
of election campaigning. The Muslim religion "does not belong in
Germany", said a leading AfD candidate Alexander Gauland, who argued its
"political doctrine is not compatible with a free country".
"Islamist rhetoric and violence and terror have roots in the Quran and in
the teachings of Islam," he told reporters on Monday. Among other
proposals, AfD wants a ban on minarets and public calls to prayer from mosques,
a ban on headscarves for teachers and students, and for imams to lead prayers
only in German. The latest polls show the AfD securing 10-12 % of the vote, up
from 8-10 percent. The first far-right party set to enter Germany's parliament
for more than a half a century has been saying it will press for Chancellor
Angela Merkel to be "severely punished" for opening the door to
refugees and migrants. aljazeera
