Union budget being
presented just before state polls is 'wrong': AAP
New Delhi: AAP is unhappy
with the poll dates announced by the Election Commission (EC) today, saying
they violate the model code of conduct principles because the Union budget is
scheduled to be announced right before the 5 state assemblies' polls. AAP is
particularly irked because the two states it is contesting in, Punjab and Goa
go to the polls the earliest, on Feb.4, and the Union budget is expected to be
announced Feb.1.In addition, AAP had earlier said that dates for the Punjab and
Goa polls should not be the same. Today the EC announced that both states'
polls will indeed take place on the same day. timesofindia

BSP list: Muslims get 97
tickets, 10 more than Dalits
Lucknow: Playing the Muslim
card to the hilt, BSP chief Mayawati gave the most Assembly poll tickets to
candidates from the minority community: 97, up from 61 in 2007 and 85 in 2012.
Dalits, who Mayawati considers her most trusted vote bank, are in second

In western UP, Muslim
loyalty shifts to Akhilesh: TOI
Tawli (UP): The unending
'dangal' or bout in Yadav parivar has forced everyone associated with the
Samajwadi Party to pick sides. Sitting near his home in the heart of West UP's
sugarcane country and dragging deep on his hookah, Yaqub Chowdhury talks
unhesitatingly about his choice. 75-year-old, better known as Yaqub Mukhia,
left Congress about two decades ago and joined Samajwadi Party. He liked its
founder Mulayam Singh Yadav ("garibon ka saathi"), canvassed for the
party, acted as a polling agent, and when required, loaded buses and tractors
with supporters to MSY rallies in nearby Muzaffarnagar and in faraway
Lucknow. But that was then. In recent times, Yaqub has switched allegiance and
become a firm supporter of Mulayam's son and CM Akhilesh Yadav, describing him
"as good as Charan Singh" — the founder of Lok Dal, from Baghpat, now
his son Ajit Singh's constituency.

Muzaffarnagar: At a time
when all political parties are trying to woo Muslim voters in UP, in
Muzaffarnagar where riots displaced more than 50,000 and left 62 dead three
years ago, Muslims said their best bet to stop BJP is still CM Akhilesh Yadav. Not dismissing the possibility
of a substantial chunk of Muslim votes going to BSP in the event of a split in
SP, Muslims here said that among large sections of those who suffered in the
riots there is an element of resentment against Mayawati as "BSP leaders,
especially Mayawati, never came to even find out how we were coping after being
uprooted by the communal violence."Idrees Ahmad, a native of Kutba village
that witnessed the exodus of close to 200 families during the 2013 violence who
is currently living in Shahpur in Muzaffarnagar, said,"We have reasons not
to vote for Mayawati tand instead go with Akhilesh Yadav. Be it the
Muzaffarnagar riots or any other incident where Muslims have been at the
receiving end, the BSP never goes beyond tokenism. How do we know she cares
about us? On the contrary, Akhilesh has started various welfare schemes that
somewhere benefited us too. Besides, he is very vocal about his sympathy with
our community. We can relate to him."TOI

In a first, India to attend
international conference on Israel and Palestine
NewDelhi:India is set to
attend for the first time an international conference that will seek to revive
peace talks between Israel and Palestine, a development that comes at time when
the Modi-led govt is trying to expand
its political presence in West Asia as part of efforts to dispel its
"anti-Muslim image". People familiar with the matter have told ET
that India plans to send a high-level team for the Jan.15 conference being
hosted by France. The conference has acquired added importance amid Israel's
attempts to act at the UN against countries that recently opposed its plan for
new settlements in disputed territories. France, however, views the conference
as part of its deradicalisation initiatives following a spate of terror attacks
on its soil, informed sources said. But it not just Palestine that India wants
to assist. India is also eyeing major reconstruction projects across housing,
power, textile and food sectors in Syria as the embattled country attempts to
return to normalcy. Delhi will host a series of Syrian ministers and senior
officials in the coming months to discuss reconstruction proposals. "Delhi
wants to stay ahead of the curve," noted an official. ET
China’s double standards

New Delhi: Minister of
State for External Affairs MJ Akbar on Wednesday lamented about China’s refusal
to recognise and list Jaish-e-Muhammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar as a global
designated terrorist at the United Nations. Akbar was speaking at Ministry of
External Affairs’ mid-term press conference in the national capital on
Wednesday. “Hope China as responsible nation understands double standards are
simply self-defeating events to recite. 14 out of 15 UNSC members want action
against Masood Azhar. There is 1 hold out. We hope this is the year that the
hold out disappear,” said Akbar.
Now, women protest against
Nida Khan for lodging fake case of tipple talaq to defame Aala Hazrat's family
Bareilly: In yet another
twist to Nida Khan episode, scores of protesting women submitted a memorandum
to the DM and the DIG police to launch a fresh probe into the matter. They also
demanded that legal action be taken against Nida for lodging a fake case
against her former husband's family, who belong to family of Aala Hazrat here.
Nida, however, claimed that the protest was stage managed at the behest of her
former husband's family. The protesting women claimed that Nida has defamed the
family of clerics and that she was married by her parents against her wishes
with a man "wearing skull cap and sporting a long beard". The women
who gathered at the collectorate said that they are followers of Aala Hazrat
and that the false allegation levelled by Nida against her former in-laws has
hurt their sentiments. The protesting women claimed that they do not belong to
the family of clerics but have decided to take up the matter with senior govt officials
as they were tired of reading "misleading" media reports about the
family of clerics. Sabra, a resident of Biharipur, said,"I was Nida's
neighbour and had seen her many times alone on the terrace of their house and
talking on her mobile phone. It was evident that she never wanted to marry a
man with a long beard and wearing a skull cap, but her family forced her to get
married. She levelled false allegations against her in-laws to end her
marriage." A resident of Shehdana, Saba Khan said, "We all are
followers of Aala Hazrat family, which provide food to the poor and also helps
in solemnising marriage of poor girls. We cannot believe that such a family
will keep their daughter-in-law hungry and misbehave with her. She had wrongly
accused her in-laws of assaulting her and causing miscarriage."Nida,
however, claimed that her former husband's family staged the protest to prove
her wrong. Nida was divorced by Sheeran Raza Khan, nephew of the head of the
seminary Subhan Raza Khan. Nida, however, claimed that she was not given a
divorce in her presence and that the family used triple talaq to dodge the
criminal case.TOI

to direct the police to take custody of her husband Navab alias Kalu Harisingh
Rathod.Rathod was granted temporary bail on Sept.27 for 7 days on the ground of
his children’s ill-health.Bail petition was moved by Minalben herself. Till
Tuesday, Rathod had not surrendered. On Dec.23, a division bench of Justices

Asadullah is not a
terrorist. He’s my son: Top doc of Azamgarh Javed Akhtar
Azamgarh: Dr Javed Akhtar
is a top orthopaedic surgeon in Azamgarh. His clinic in the Brahmasthan
locality of this chaotic town in eastern UP is always packed with patients,
over 85% of them Hindus. He is a tall, well-read man with a silver mane and a
cautious spoken manner. On the 19th of Dec,Dr Akhtar’s son Asadullah Akhtar was
convicted by a court in Hyderabad for carrying out, along with four others, the
Dilsukhnagar terror blasts in that city back in 2013. The day the death
sentence was pronounced, Dr Akhtar was in his practice attending to patients.
He left early. When he reached his house in Jalandhari mohalla in Azamgarh,
relatives, friends and well-wishers had already gathered to commiserate. Dr
Akhthar cannot believe it. In his eyes Asadullah cannot have been a terrorist.
“I did not raise my son to be an anti-national,” says the father. “I have
always believed in Hindu-Muslim unity and taught the same to my children. My
son had several Hindu friends to whom he was very close. Do you think he would
kill our Hindu brothers? He has been implicated.”Asadullah Akthar is 31 years
old. To Dr Akthar, his son’s appearance on the security agencies’ anti-terror
radar was a colossal coincidence. After the Batla House encounter took place in
New Delhi in 2008, he says, the police found his son’s phone number in the
pocket of one of the two men killed in the incident.“That’s it. My son was also
labelled a terrorist,”says Dr Akhtar. The orthopaedician insists there never
was a thorough enquiry conducted into the Batla House encounter and the truth
never came out. “Entire Muslim community in Azamgarh is doubtful about such
arrests and convictions. Our boys have been falsely implicated since that
case,” he says. new indian express

VHP activists in Bhopal tried
to stop a Hindu wedding because groom played guitar at a church event
VHP is not a big fan of inter-religious marriage.
And they have left no stones unturned to prove that time and again. However,
this time, a bunch of VHP activists in Bhopal are opposing a marriage where
both the bride and the groom claim to be Hindu. The reason? They believe that
28-year-old Vishal Mitra is a Christian and 27-year-old Ritu Dubey have "mentally
converted to Christianity".They apparently have solid reasons for these
beliefs too.In 2013, Vishal had played guitar at an event in a church in
Bhopal. Therefore, according to their logic, he follows Christianity.
Meanwhile, Ritu has reportedly stopped wearing bindi and refused to pray to
Hindu Gods since she met Vishal. So, she has shown signs of being

kidnapped from hospitals and refugee camps. This was especially common amongst

the cases. It was very common that the Israeli authorities would claim the

an Israeli soldier guilty of manslaughter over the killing of a wounded

that he is innocent as charged. In the video, a combat medic, later identified
as Azaria, raises and aims his rifle, then a shot is heard. The Palestinian's

civilians have been killed throughout 2016 as a result of continued violence
and turmoil in the war-ravaged country, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq
(UNAMI) said yesterday.UNAMI revealed that their data showed that at least
6,878 civilians had been killed last year, and stressed that their figure was
“to be considered as the absolute minimum” as they could not acquire reliable
civilian death figures in conflict areas around the country.Since 17 Oct.2016,
the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), allied Kurdish Peshmerga and Shia jihadists
have been engaged in a US-backed offensive to dislodge the Daesh militant group
from the northern city of Mosul.Apart from the Mosul offensive, the ISF has
been engaged in military operations against Daesh since 2014, fighting in over
a third of Iraq’s 18 provinces, including the expansive western Anbar desert,
Iraq’s largest province dominated by the Sunni Arabs.Due to persisting
instability and insecurity even after Daesh was expelled from all of Anbar’s
main towns and cities, UNAMI has stated that their civilian casualty figures
also do not include any data for four months of 2016, including December. Iraqi
civilians have often borne the brunt of fighting between US and Iran-backed govt
forces and militant groups, particularly Daesh.

inmates were killed in firefights with pursuing police and army troops, while
eight others have been caught and were being returned to the facility, said
Senior Inspector Xavier Solda, spokesman for the Bureau of Jail Management and

Myanmar commission’s report
on Rakhine ‘flawed’: HRW
Yangon: Human Rights Watch
(HRW) has slammed an investigation commission appointed by Myanmar’s govt for claiming that most reports accusing
security forces of rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims are
“fabricated”.After the commission submitted an interim report Wednesday on its
findings related to fatal Oct. 9 attacks on police in troubled Rakhine State
and a subsequent military crackdown, HRW called it “methodologically flawed”
and “a classic example of pre-baked political conclusions”. Anadolu agency
