Reveal Details of All Those Arrested, Detained: Civil Rights Activists
to Delhi Police
New Delhi: After the Delhi Police registered 254 FIRs and arrested 903 persons in connection
with the violence that rocked North East Delhi, several civil rights activists
have urged the police to proactively display the details of all those in its
custody.A letter to the Commissioner of Delhi Police, signed by Anjali Bhardwaj
of Satark Nagrik Sangathan on behalf of nine other activists besides her,
stated that the police should display information about those arrested or in
its custody. She said this was mandated under Section 41-C of the Criminal
Procedure Code. Others who have joined this request are Annie Raja, Yogendra
Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Rahul Rou, Saba Dewan, Pamela Philipose, Amrita Johri,
Navsharan Singh and Indira Unninayar.Pointing out that lawyers and journalists,
who have visited the violence-affected areas, have reported that the exact
number of those held by the police was not known, Bhardwaj wrote that
information on this issue would “provide clarity to affected families and stop
rumours”.The appeal comes as many people have been reported missing in the area
ever since it was gripped by violence on February 24. Family members and
friends of people have been searching for their missing ones in hospitals and
mortuaries and doing rounds of police stations to learn about them. Bhardwaj
said despite the law being clear on this aspect, information on those arrested
was not being displayed at the police control room in the districts of North
East and Shahdara and in the police stations falling within their
jurisdiction.thewire

'BSF' on Jawan Anees's Nameplate Could Not Save His House From Being
Burnt
New Delhi: Among the 35 houses set on fire by rioters on two lanes of
Khajuri Khas in north east Delhi was a house that belonged to a soldier serving
in BSF. Mohammad Anees, BSF jawan, had also put up a nameplate in front of his
house announcing that he serves the paramilitary force. On Feb.29, The Hindu
reported that BSF will be rebuilding jawan’s destroyed house. A Home ministry
spokesperson said senior officers of BSF spoke to the constable and a DIG-rank
officer visited his family on Saturday. On the afternoon of Feb.25, he and his
family were huddled inside the house while the mob outside burnt vehicles
stationery in front of it. The mob shouted out lines like, “Idhar aa Pakistani,
tujhe naagrikta dete hai (‘Come here Pakistani, we will you citizenship’) and
pelted stones at the house.Anees, his father Mohammad Musi, uncle Mohammad
Ahmed and a cousin, Neha Parveen, who were trapped inside it, were desperately
hoping that they would see the nameplate and move away. Anees, who joined the
forces in 2013, had served three years in J&K along tension-ridden
India-Pakistan border. But the nameplate proved to be ineffective. The rioters
soon threw a gas cylinder into the house to burn it. Anees and 3 others managed
to escape with help from the paramilitary forces.“Charred remains of the house
now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Kharuji
Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire. Only one house belonging
to a Muslim family was spared,” said a News18.com report. The report said, “The
loss suffered by BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all
their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in
the next three months.” thewire

Pakistan Hindu Council condemns violence against Indian Muslims:APP
Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC)
Patron-in-Chief and MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar has condemned the “inhuman treatment”
of Muslim minority in India, under the rule of Prime Minister Narendra
Modi.“Narendra Modi is the Hitler of recent times,” he said while addressing a
PHC meeting on Saturday.During the meeting, PHC members expressed grief and
dismay over state-backed violence against Muslims in different parts of India,
particularly Delhi. They also discussed videos featuring atrocities meted out
to Indian Muslims, many of which had gone viral and according to Dr Kumar, were
“heartbreaking.” He said he was deeply saddened by the helplessness of Indian
Muslims and appealed to the international community to take notice of the
turmoil in India, while other PHC members strongly condemned the use of
religious slogans by mobs involved in violent activities. In this regard, Dr Kumar
said the rioters perpetrating violence while shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ better
read Ramayana first. “When did Ramayana called for subjecting innocent human
beings to such horrific atrocities?” he asked. He said, in fact, every religion
in the world taught humanity and called for respecting other religions.Holding
Modi responsible for the turmoil in India and slamming him, Dr Kumar maintained
that it is the state’s responsibility to protect minorities but “Modi shed
Muslims’ blood as the chief minister of Gujarat and he has bloodied the entire
country after becoming the prime minister.”
Would have arrested BJP leaders if I was in charge, says ex-police chief
New Delhi:Former Commissioner of Police in Delhi and former DG of BSF
Ajay Raj Sharma has slammed the Delhi Police for their role in the violence
that rocked Northeast Delhi last week.In an interview to Karan Thapar for The
Wire, Sharma, who served as Delhi CP from 1999-2002, said that “he would have
arrested BJP leaders Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Verma and Kapil Mishra” for inflammatory
speeches they made.Sharma said, “I would have arrested Thakur after informing
the Home Ministry… For Mishra (who is not an MLA), there was no obstruction in
arresting him.”When Thapar asked him about DCP (Northeast) Ved Prakash Surya
standing next to Mishra as he gave an “ultimatum to police” at a rally in
Northeast Delhi, Sharma said, “I would have called for his explanation
immediately… Why did he not take action or tell him to stop… If the explanation
wasn’t satisfactory, he would have been removed from his post.”Sharma said that
the first mistake police made was “allowing Shaheen Bagh to take place… If
Shaheen Bagh had not taken place, this riot would not have taken place. Shaheen
Bagh was leading to communal tension because of the slogans being raised
there.”He said anything that obstructs traffic on the roads is a cognizable
crime and “when a cognizable crime takes place, you have to act as a
policeman”.indianexpress
'Today, Police Does Exactly What Its Political Masters Want,' :Former
IPS Officer Julio Ribeiro
Padma Bhushan awardee and former Indian Police officer, Julio Ribeiro,
90, on the urgent need to separate the police force from the political parties
that cling on to power.Ribeiro said, "Whatever is happening in Delhi is a
shame. It only shows the urgent need for police reforms. The hold on the police
should be loosened, to allow them to function effectively and impartially. I'm
not saying that the police shouldn't be accountable to anyone, they should be.
For example, in the US, there are congressional and senate committees which
oversee the police and bring them to task if need be. We can adopt a similar
model, even though this is beyond the SC's order. Even if we implement the SC's
directions in both letter and spirit, that will be a good place to
start."mid-day

Delhi witnessed 'targeted structural violence':Owaisi

Delhi BJP president and MP from northeast Delhi Manoj Tiwari on Saturday
said Delhi Police had failed to assess the situation, which escalated into a
full-blown communal riot in his Lok Sabha seat. Seeking a proper investigation
to look into the lapses and circumstances resulting in death of 42, Tiwari said
though there were 73 companies of additional force were deployed on the very
first day, the violence had engulfed the region in a flash.“Police couldn’t
analyse the situation. They (police) must have thought that people (protesting
against CAA) are sitting here (Jaffrabad). But, the violence erupted and soon
spread to other parts of northeast Delhi. I was also called by residents from
several areas (in northwest Delhi) conveying the need for deployment of police
force,” he said. On BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s provocative statement, Tiwari
said that an independent committee should be set up to look into and define
hate speeches given by leaders of all political parties including BJP. He said

lives as mobs tore down doors, set gas cylinders alight and destroyed their
belongings. My home is all right, says Arshi; but when she asked what she could
salvage, she looks at her bare hands, and says, nothing at all. No clothes, no
prized possessions, and no memories of the years her family has lived
here.Aslam, a scrap dealer salvaged two bags worth of belongings from his home
where he lived with his wife and three small children. He breaks down as he
realises the mobs left nothing of the used refrigerators and air conditioner he
had recently acquired with all his savings of ₹55,000.“I really have nothing to

resident welfare association officials, when the violence subsided and the
fires burnt out, gangs of men began looting every building that was deserted.

state next year. “For the people of Bengal, Modi ji got absolute majority in
2019. We promise that we will form the government here in 2021 with at least a

Cong to strongly raise Delhi riots in Parliament, demand Shah's
resignation
Congress will strongly raise the issue of communal riots in Delhi during
the second part of the Budget Session in Parliament starting on Monday and
demand Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over alleged police lapses. Party
leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the party will strongly raise the issue of
riot-torn Delhi and ask why the violence happened. "The government has
miserably failed to maintain law and order. I think there must be some sort of
a nexus between the rioters and a section of police officials which resulted in
gruesome killings and arson that has tarnished our image across the globe. This
is a matter of serious concern for us," he told PTI. "We will
continue to raise the demand of Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation on the

Grateful for Sikhs’ Help, Muslims End Saharanpur Land Dispute
Muslims and Sikhs in Western Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur have brought an
end to a 10-year-old land dispute. The dispute involved a plot of land adjoining
a Gurdwara not far from Saharanpur railway station. Gurdwara committee had
purchased the land for expanding the Gurdwara complex. But the old structures
on the plot were demolished and this is said to have included an old mosque. The
dispute had reached the Supreme Court. But the Muslim party gave up its claim.
In return, Sikhs decided to give Muslims an alternate plot of land. But now the
Muslims have decided to forgo this as well, out of gratitude for the help given
by Sikhs to the people affected by the communal violence in Northeast Delhi, as
well as the solidarity extended by the community to protests against
CAA."In view of the great service and support rendered by the Sikhs to
Muslims in Delhi throughout the protests and most recently during the riots in
Delhi, Masjid committee in Saharanpur decided to give up its claim over the
land as a token of gratitude and thanksgiving," said Nizam Pasha, who
represented the Muslim side in the Supreme Court. "Sikhs stand for
humanity. They help people in need. The helped people affected by the communal
violence in Delhi. This is God's work," Muslim petitioner Muharram Ali
told The Quint. “We are extremely happy that Muslims came for the Karsewa of
the Gurdwara. Even though the dispute was going on since 2010, we didn’t want
it to harm relations between the two communities,” said Sunny, representative
from the Sikh side.thequint

Turkey shoots down 2 Syrian govt fighter jets over Idlib
Antakya: Turkey's military shot down two Syrian government fighter jets
over northwest Idlib, hours after forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad brought down a Turkish drone over the region. In a Twitter post on
Sunday, Turkey's defence ministry said its forces struck two SU-24 aircraft in
response to the downing of the drone.Syria's SANA news agency confirmed the
fighters were hit over Idlib, but said no one was hurt in the attack. The
pilots used parachutes and landed safely, it added. Earlier on Sunday, Turkish
and Syrian state-run media offered contradicting reports on the downing of the
drone. Turkey's Anadolu news agency said an "Assad regime jet" was
hit over Idlib, but Syria's SANA denied it promptly, saying a Turkish drone
crashed over the town of Saraqeb. The Turkish defence ministry's Twitter post
is the first confirmation of the downing of the drone. It also said three
Syrian air defence systems were destroyed in the retaliatory attack. Amid the
escalating tensions, the Syrian government closed the airspace over Idlib, with
one official telling SANA any aircraft "that violates our airspace will be
treated as a hostile flight that must be shot down and prevented from achieving
its objectives". Forces loyal to al-Assad, backed by Russian airpower,
have renewed an offensive to capture Idlib from opposition forces, who are
backed by Turkey.Tensions have escalated in recent days after 34 Turkish troops
were killed in Syrian government air raids on Idlib. The toll was the biggest
military loss the Turkish military has suffered since it intervened in the
Syrian conflict in 2016. In response, Ankara said it struck scores of Syrian
government targets and "neutralised" 2,212 soldiers.

Muhyiddin becomes Malaysia PM, Mahathir vows to fight
Muhyiddin Yassin was sworn in as Malaysia's prime minister on Sunday, an
hour after his predecessor and former ally, Mahathir Mohamad, claimed he was
the one with enough support to form a government and would prove it with a vote
in Parliament."I am telling the public that I have the majority
support," Mahathir told journalists in a live-streamed news conference.
"I have 114."94-year-old veteran Mahathir said he had proof of the
support in the form of statutory declarations and letters, and called for an
urgent sitting of Parliament.Mahathir was flanked by politicians from the
Pakatan Harapan coalition, which won power in May 2018 but has been dogged by
political infighting that came to a head last weekend when a splinter group
tried to form an alliance with the opposition. The move led to Mahathir's
resignation and days of uncertainty that king, a constitutional monarch, had
sought to resolve by meeting each member of Parliament individually. On
Saturday, the palace announced that Muhyiddin, 72, had the confidence of
Parliament and would be sworn in as prime minister on Sunday.Muhyiddin was
driven into the palace in Kuala Lumpur at 9.50am ahead of the oath-taking
ceremony, having cobbled together a coalition with the opposition UMNO, and
PAS, Malaysia's Islamic party, with support from the main political party in
the Borneo territory of Sarawak. Members of his new coalition were also at the
palace, sharing pictures of themselves on social media, before Muhyiddin took
the oath to become the country's eighth prime minister at 10.30am. Mahathir
said he felt betrayed by Muhyiddin, a veteran politician who was home minister
under the previous Pakatan Harapan government. "We are going to see a man
who does not have majority support become prime minister," he
said.Muhyiddin was deputy prime minister under Najib Razak until he was sacked

Israeli polls: Illegal settlements high on agendas
Israel is preparing to hold its third election in a year on Monday. The
vote will be first since the announcement of a US plan for the Middle East
which has been roundly rejected by the Palestinians. They say neither of the two
main candidates has a Palestinian state on their agenda, and they are competing
to take even more of their rights away.
Israel's Palestinian citizens: We'll vote because we're targeted
Aysha Khalifa, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, is adamant that she will
be voting on Monday, when Israel holds its third election in less than a year.A
teacher in the central town of Umm al-Fahm, Khalifa says she will cast her
ballot for the Arab Joint List, an electoral alliance of four Palestinian
political parties, partly as a response to US President Donald Trump's proposed
plan for the Middle East."We are the people of this land," she told
Al Jazeera. "Trump's deal is not a peace plan because peace is built on
justice. I'll vote to prevent the right wing from gaining power," Khalifa
said.Heavily weighted in favour of Israel, Trump unveiled his long-awaited plan
in late January alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at an event
in the White House. One of its proposals lays out the possibility of redrawing
Israel's borders, with 10 Palestinian towns including Umm al-Fahm, transferred
to a future Palestinian state. Some 260,000 Palestinian citizens of Israel
living in these towns, which are located in an area known as the "Triangle"
near the Green Line, could potentially find themselves outside Israel's
borders. aljazeera
