Shaheen Bagh turns tinderbox in
Delhi polls: Modi calls Shaheen Bagh a conspiracy, Kejriwal says BJP doesn’t want to
clear road
New Delhi :Both AAP and BJP Monday accused each other of trying to reap
political dividends from the ongoing Shaheen Bagh protest in New Delhi. While
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the protest was a “political conspiracy to
destroy the country’s harmony”, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said BJP
did not want to clear the Shaheen Bhagh road, as it was the only issue it had
to fight the election on.Speaking at News18′s ‘Agenda Delhi’, Kejriwal said: “I
don’t know why the central government is not opening the road near Shaheen Bagh
when the issue comes under them. Basically, they don’t want to do it as BJP is
indulging in politics. Can’t believe a powerful Home Minister like Amit Shah
can’t get that road cleared. If it is opened, there won’t be an issue left for
them.”Hours later, addressing a poll rally at Delhi’s Karkardooma, PM Modi
said: “There is a political design behind all these protests. If protest had
been against one law, it would have ended after assurances from government. But
AAP and Congress are provoking people. The Constitution and the Tricolor are
being kept in the front to divert attention from the real conspiracy.”Modi said
the people who had raised questions on the surgical strikes by the Army were
today “saving those who want to break India into pieces.”“Be it Seelampur,
Jamia or Shaheen Bagh, protests have been held over the past several days
regarding CAA. Is this just a coincidence? No. This is an experiment. There is
politics behind this. indianexpress

"You're A Terrorist, Plenty Of Proof": Union Minister To
Kejriwal
New Delhi: Undeterred by the outrage and election body notice over a BJP
MP calling Arvind Kejriwal a "terrorist", Union Minister Prakash
Javadekar today repeated the comment at a press conference as campaigning
entered the last phase ahead of the February 8 Delhi election."There is a
reason voters of Delhi have turned away from Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal makes an
innocent face and asks - 'am I a terrorist?' -- You are a terrorist, there is
plenty of proof. You had yourself said you are an anarchist; there is not much
difference between an anarchist and terrorist," Mr Javadekar said.Mr
Kejriwal's AAP reacted furiously to Mr Javadekar's comments. "This is
happening in the capital of our country... where the central government is
based, the Election Commission is present. How can a central minister be
permitted to use such language? If Arvind Kejriwal is a terrorist, I challenge
the BJP to arrest him," said AAP MP Sanjay Singh.ndtv

Modi is encouraging communal hate, fear mongering, say women activists

Over 160 women and 13 organisations have urged Prime Minister Narendra
Modi to stop BJP members from
threatening women with violence and instead fight the upcoming Delhi Assembly
elections by upholding the dignity of the Constitution. In an open letter to

Sharjeel Imam called for large scale 'disturbance' in Delhi to grab
international attention:indiatoday
JNU student Sharjeel Imam, who has been arrested by Delhi Police over
sedition charges, allegedly called for a large scale disturbance in Delhi to
grab international's media attention. Delhi Police had earlier said that he had
made a pamphlet with incorrect information on CAA and NRC. He had distributed
these pamphlets at mosques.India Today TV has a copy of the pamphlet, which was
recovered from Sharjee Imam's laptop. The pamphlet says: "Thousands of
Muslim youths are ready to disrupt Delhi which will give international media
attention to our issue.""This law [CAA] is unconstitutional and
intends to disfranchise Muslims and put them in detention camps. It has already
started in Assam and will follow elsewhere... Kashmir, Babri and now CAA, there
are more than enough grounds for a strong reaction from Muslims across
India," the pamphlet read. It asked people to gather at Jamia Milia
Islamia at 3pm.As per the police, the pamphlet was printed and distributed in
mosques on December 14, and the violence in and outside Jamia campus took place
on December 15.
In defence of Sharjeel Imam: JNU activist did what no one else has dared
to, he questioned principles of NRC; this isn’t sedition
Sharjeel Imam was arrested recently on charges of sedition. His crime?
Calling for a blockade against Assam in response to the possible
disenfranchisement of 1.9 million people on the back of Assam NRC. Many of the
‘solidarity’ statements, while condemning the application of draconian
anti-sedition laws and UAPA, have simultaneously distanced themselves or
outright condemned Sharjeel’s call for a blockade. At this juncture, we need to
break down the implications of these half-hearted solidarity statements. There
can be two objections to this particular statement, one is that these groups
oppose the manner of protest and the other relates to a condemnation of what
has transpired in Assam until today. Sharjeel’s call for a blockade in the
so-called ‘chicken neck’ against Assam is being interpreted as a call for
aggression against the people of the state and its people and the North East at
large, hence the sedition charges lodged by the governments of Arunachal
Pradesh and Manipur, apart from those in Assam, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
However, while one can understand that BJP ruled states (or in the case of
Delhi, where the police fall under the control of the BJP-run Central
government) would be trigger-happy with regards to sedition cases, this does
not account for the objections of progressive activist circles in the so-called
‘mainland’.

makes the road to becoming Indian citizens more difficult for Muslim refugees?
Will that impact how he votes in the upcoming Delhi polls?Azimi grins. “They
don’t want citizenship in India. People come to India because it’s easier to

Cops turn up at Bidar school for fourth time, question kids over
anti-CAA play
Police officers including the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Bidar
district turned up at the Shaheen Primary and High School on Monday once again
to question students at the school. The school management, a headmistress, and
parents have been booked for sedition for staging a play against the CAA. A
complaint filed by an ABVP activist said that there were dialogues insulting
the Prime Minister and the children have already been interrogated thrice over
this.Despite heavy criticism for putting the children through trauma, plain
clothed officers questioned as many as seven students on Monday. Except for one
student, the rest were not part of the play, but had taken part in other
activities the same day. These children were asked to identify where the other
children practiced for the play and what they were asked to do.Last week,
police arrested a parent named Nazbunnisa whose daughter had delivered the
dialogues that the ABVP activist objected to, along with the headmistress of
the primary section Fareeda Begum. Since the two women have been charged with

the meaning of various words Muslims use during prayers, such as Allahu Akbar,
Hai Ya Alal Falah, and La Ilaha Illallah. The rare initiative launched by the

SC says not discussing women's entry into Sabarimala; top court to frame
larger questions on religious discrimination against women by 6 Feb
New Delhi :The Supreme Court on Monday said it will frame legal
questions to be adjudicated by a nine-judge bench on religious discrimination
against women at various religious places, the larger concerns which have
arisen during the Sabarimala temple case.9-judge Constitution bench headed by
CJI S A Bobde said that it will inform the parties about the time frame and the
questions framed in the matter on February 6.The bench said it will also deal
with the issue whether a reference order can be made in review jurisdiction for
a hearing by a larger bench.During the hearing, senior advocates Fali S
Nariman, Kapil Sibal, Shyam Divan and Rakesh Dwivedi said in review
jurisdiction, there cannot be any reference order on issues to be heard by a
larger bench. The senior lawyers contended that in review jurisdiction, the
scope is very limited and the court can only see whether the judgment under
review has any error apparent or not.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, senior
advocates K Parasaran and Ranjit Kumar, however, opposed the arguments and said
the top court while exercising the review jurisdiction can refer a larger
issue, which had arisen during the adjudication of the dispute, to a larger
bench. The bench said it will deal with all the issues and frame the questions
which needs to be adjudicated by the nine-judge bench. The bench made clear that
it was not discussing the issue of entry of women of all age groups into
Sabarimala temple in Kerala.“The Sabarimala review case is not before us. We
are not deciding Sabarimala. We are deciding the larger questions,” the bench
said when senior advocates Nariman, Sibal, Divan and Dwivedi opposed the hearing
on the so-called larger issue relating to discrimination against women in
various religions.Sibal, appearing for All India Muslim Personal Board, said
though Muslim women are allowed entry into the mosque, the issue of essential
religious practice is broad enough to be decided by this court. The Article 25
and 26 (fundamental rights to religion) of the Constitution are part of the
fundamental rights which are enforceable against state action, he said.“A lot
of petitions have been filed saying Nikah Halala is bad. Somebody is saying
polygamy is bad. How the bench will decide the issue,” Sibal said.To this, the
bench said, “That is why we have set up a nine-judge bench. That is why we are
hearing you.”PTI

drama.’Addressing a public event in Bengaluru, Lok Sabha MP from Uttara Kannada
in Karnataka said, “Some people keep saying we got independence because someone

country.”Hegde, prone to outrageous comments, further alleged that the freedom
movement was “one big drama.” He said, “None of these ‘leaders’ were beaten up
by the cops even once. The freedom movement by itself was one big drama. It was

about the basics of freedom struggle, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said,
“There is no need for people to learn about patriotism from people like him who
revere Godse and Savarkar.”Congress, in turn, appealed Prime Minister Narendra

first-rate science" where people are tackling important
