Anti-CAA: Protests erupt across Tamil Nadu a day after Chennai Police baton
charge demonstrators
Protests erupted across Tamil Nadu today, a day after the Chennai Police
baton charged a group of people demonstrating against CAA in Washermanpet. A
large number of Muslims residents including women, have been staging a road
blockade stir across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu since Friday night.
The agitation continued on Saturday in Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, parts of
Thoothukudi, Madurai and Ramanathapuram districts.In Tenkasi, the protesters
condemned the police action in Chennai and sat on the Tiruneveli-Tenkasi road
near the Govt Hospital. Traffic was halted for about 30 minutes. Tenkasi DSP
Gokulakrishnan, Inspector Adivel and a team rushed to the spot and held talks
with the protesters. 4 policemen had also been injured in Friday’s protests.
The police alleged that they resorted to baton charge because the protestors
pelted stones at them. Friday’s incident led to sporadic protests in at least
12 towns across Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Traders in Kannur shut shop to protest
the alleged police atrocities. There were reports of protests in Tiruchendur
too. Over 1,000 people carried out a protest outside a post office in
Kumbakonam district, while another protest took place at Melapalyam in
Nellai.Protestors blocked a road on Chidambaram-Trichy Highway, while over 500
people continued a demonstration in Ramanathapuram district. Over 1,000 women
gathered in Washermanpet to protest the incident, and shops remained closed in
the area. Meanwhile, Chennai Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan met Tamil
Nadu CM E Palaniswami at latter’s residence today to explain police action
against protestors. In a 30-minute meeting, commissioner also told Palaniswami
about the various protests going on around the city.On Friday, Viswanathan had
met representatives of Muslim groups and community leaders, following which the
protest at Washermanpet came to an end.Opposition parties condemned the police
“atrocities” on the protestors. DMK President MK Stalin claimed the protests
were being held in a peaceful manner and sought to know why the police used force

SC Directs Centre, Assam to File Status Report on Bangladeshi Migrants

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre and the Assam
Govt to file a fresh report with regard to the status of the release of
Bangladeshi migrants in detention centres as per its earlier order.A bench
headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde was apprised by advocate Prashant Bhushan
that over 300 people were in detention for over three years, while more than
700 had been detained for over one year.The apex court posted the matter for
hearing in the third week of March after solicitor general Tushar Mehta sought
time.The top court in May last year had ordered that illegal foreigners in
Assam who have completed more than three years in detention may be released
after they provide biometric details in a secured database.PTI
Assam Officials Allege Email Tampering, Data Deletion In Citizens' List
Guwahati: The officials of NRC in Assam are likely to ask the centre to
launch an independent probe into suspected cases of "wilful deletion"
of data and important emails, people with direct knowledge of the matter have
told NDTV.The emails that were suspected to have been deleted between November
and December last year when state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela was
transferred and Hitesh Dev Sarma was appointed in his place, the sources said,
asking not to be identified. Assam NRC directorate may have to file a petition
with the Supreme Court since the citizens' list exercise to weed out illegal
immigrants is being monitored by the top court, the sources said. The request
for the probe is likely to be sent to the centre through the Registrar General

New Delhi: Protesters at Shaheen Bagh on Saturday said said they are
willing to speak to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discuss CAA. The
agitators, mostly women, have been demonstrating at the locality in southeast
Delhi since mid-December.The comments come a day after Shah said anyone who
wants to discuss issues related to the CAA with him can seek time from his
office. "(We) will give time within three days," he had said at a
programme in the national capital on Thursday."We accept Amit Shah's
proposal for a discussion. We are ready to meet at 2pm tomorrow. We are not
seeking any appointment," said the protesters on Saturday. "Now it's
for Home Minister Amit Shah to decide whether to meet us (and where) or not."But
sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs said no such meeting is scheduled for
tomorrow.According to a report in India Today, protesters intend to march to
Shah's residence with a charter of demands."Amit Shah ji invited the

Mumbai:Setting aside an order by Additional District Magistrate against
allowing protests in Beed, Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court said that
those protesting against the CAA “cannot be called traitors, anti-nationals
only because they want to oppose one law”.The Court said that an agitation
cannot be suppressed only on the ground that people are agitating against the Govt.
It also asked the bureaucracy to “keep in mind” that when people believe that a
“particular Act is an attack on their rights… they are bound to defend that
right”. And underlined that it is not for the Court “to ascertain whether the
exercise of such right will create a law and order problem”.Granting relief to
petitioners who were seeking permission to sit at a location for an indefinite
agitation, the Court noted they had given an undertaking that no slogans would
be raised against the country, any religion, or unity and integrity of the
nation.“The submissions made show that there will be no question of
disobedience of provisions of CAA by such agitation. This Court is expected to
consider the right of such persons to start agitation in a peaceful way. This
Court wants to express that such persons cannot be called as traitors,
anti-nationals only because they want to oppose one law. It will be an act of
protest and only against the govt for the reason of CAA,” Division Bench of
Justices TV Nalawade and MG Sewlikar said. The Court was hearing a petition filed
by a 45-year-old Beed resident, Iftekhar Shaikh, challenging an order by a
police inspector last month refusing permission for an agitation based on an

Movement, the Court said the movement was in solidarity with and support to the

Ahmedabad :Supreme Court judge Justice D Y Chandrachud today said that
labelling dissent as “anti-national” or “anti-democratic” strikes at the heart
of deliberative democracy.“A legitimate government committed to deliberate
dialogue does not seek to restrict political contestation but welcomes it…A
state committed to the rule of law ensures that the state apparatus is not
employed to curb legitimate and peaceful protest but to create spaces conducive
for deliberation,” Justice Chandrachud said while delivering a lecture at Gujarat
High Court auditorium here.“Within the bounds of the law, liberal democracies
ensure that their citizens enjoy the right to express their views in every
conceivable manner, including the right to protest and express dissent against
prevailing laws. The blanket labelling of such dissent as ‘anti-national’ or
‘anti-democratic’ strikes at the heart of our commitment to the protection of
constitutional values and the promotion of deliberative democracy,” he
continued.Significantly, Justice Chandrachud was part of a bench that had
sought response of UP govt on a plea seeking quashing of notices sent to
alleged protesters for recovering losses caused by damage during the anti-CAA
agitations in the state.He further emphasised that “the commitment to civil
liberty flows directly from the manner in which the State treats dissent”. He
also termed dissent as the “safety valve of democracy” and said that silencing
of dissent and the generation of fear in the minds of people go beyond the
violation of personal liberty and a commitment to constitutional values.Justice
Chandrachud said that the true test of a democracy is its ability to ensure the
creation and protection of spaces where every individual can voice their
opinion without any fear of retribution.He also stated the suppression of

Election card is proof of citizenship: Court
MUMBAI: A magistrate court held that original election cards are proof
of citizenship this week while acquitting a Mankhurd couple arrested in 2017 on
suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals illegally living in India.The court
held a birth certificate, a domicile certificate, a bona fide certificate and a
passport can be relied upon to establish the origin of any person. "Even
the election card can be said to be sufficient proof of citizenship as while
applying for the election card or a voting card, a person has to file a
declaration with the authority in view of Form 6 of Peoples Representation Act
to the authority that he is a citizen of India and if the declaration is found
false, he is liable for punishment," the court said. The court further
said the documents submitted by the accused, Abbas Shaikh (45) and Rabiya
Shaikh (40), were not rebutted by the prosecution or proven to be fake.
"It is necessary to mention that the person may lie but the documents will
never," the court said.The court clarified that Aadhar card, PAN card,
driving licence or ration card cannot be termed as the documents proving
citizenship as they are not meant for the purpose.TOI

Amritsar: Akal Takht, the top Sikh body, has extended its support to the
Muslim groups that have been protesting against CAA for weeks.A delegation led
by Delhi Minority Commission chief Zafarul Islam Khan met Giani Harpeet Singh,
the chief priest of Akal Takht, in Amritsar where the latter assured the Sikh
community's support to the protests.The chief of Akal Takht, also known as
'jathedar', said there is a sentiment of fear and insecurity among the
minorities and the Sikhs are bound to stand by the oppressed."Sikhs are bound
by their principles to stand for the victim and against injustice. We had
received a similar request from another group of the Muslim community. There is
a sentiment of fear and insecurity among minorities and it is not good for the
country," he said after the meeting.The chief priest asked the Muslim
leaders to also seek the support of Hindu groups against the Citizenship

Bidar sedition case: After spending 2 weeks in jail, mother, teacher
finally get bail
After spending more than two weeks in prison over an anti-NRC play, the
mother of a student and a head-teacher at Shaheen Primary and High School in
Bidar were granted bail by the district and sessions court on Friday. The 2
will be released against a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh each, the court said.
“The accused/petitioners will be released on bail… on their executing personal
bond in a sum of Rs. 1 lakh each with two sureties for the like sum to the
satisfaction of the Jurisdictional Magistrate,” Judge M Premavathi said in her
bail order. The two women have also been asked by the court to appear before
the investigating officer in the case when they are called upon. “We are happy
to hear that bail was granted to both the teacher and the mother of the
student. We still can’t believe that a satirical play critical of NRC attracted
a charge of sedition,”Touseef Madikeri, CEO of Shaheen Primary and High School said

Bareilly: Poet Imran Pratapgarhi has been slapped with Rs 1.04 crore
fine for participating in anti CAA protest in Moradabad and for allegedly
instigating the protestors at the city’s Eidgah premises.Pratapgarhi was also
asked by the additional city magistrate to appear before him last Wednesday but
he defied the order.“Govt is trying to find new ways to scare the agitators.
But we cannot afford to be afraid of such tactics as the fight is now for (our)
existence,” said Pratapgarhi. A protestor, who did not wished to be named, however,
claimed that the Eidgah was a private place and the prohibitory order could not

In Muzaffarnagar protest case, ADM is prosecution, jury and judge
combined
On Wednesday, Muzaffarnagar ADM ordered 53 people to pay a total of Rs
23.41 lakh for damage caused to property during an anti-CAA protest on December
20. ADM Amit Singh issued the orders a month after he had issued notices
seeking replies from them.Of the 53, 50 had responded to the notices but
records accessed by Indian Express show glaring gaps in due process.For one,
ADM did not allow the defence to cross-examine the police on explanations and
evidence submitted by those asked to pay up. Neither did he detail the evidence
placed on record by the accused. Instead, the ADM’s final executive order only
states that the accused have refuted all the allegations.The order does not
even give any detail about which accused was involved in the destruction of a
particular public property.Instead, it says that the accused have been held
responsible for damage of public property based on CCTV footage and photographs
provided by police.The order records the argument put forward by the accused
that “none of them have been named in FIR” and that “notices make no mention of
what are the public properties that have been damaged”. But there is no
response from the police on these key discrepancies.The order was passed
despite the notices issued last month being challenged before the Supreme
Court. On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court stayed similar notices issued in Kanpur
on the grounds that their legality is being questioned before the Supreme

UP Govt has slapped National Security Act (NSA) against Gorakhpur
physician Dr Kafeel Khan for allegedly making provocative comments during his

Kafeel was being harassmed without any reason.An FIR was registered against

Aligarh: AMU students, most of them women are now demanding the release
of anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam, who was arrested by Delhi Police in a
sedition case last month. The students on Thursday shouted slogans of 'Azadi'
(freedom) and demanded that Sharjeel Imam be released.They also took out an
anti-CAA/NRC/NPR protest march from the Maulana Azad library to Bab-E-Syed

Muzaffarnagar: Women opposing CAA in Deoband have locked themselves up
in a symbolic “detention centre” as a mark of protest.According to the
protesters, a special container has been made of iron to showcase their
“dilemma” against the CAA. The women protesters had marched to the Eidgah
grounds on the evening of January 27, and have been sitting on a dharna there
since then.Amna Roshi, who is leading the protest and whose brother, Musharraf
Usmani, was booked under various sections by police, said, “Installing a cage
here at the dharna spot is a warning to the community – ‘if you do not wake up

Patna: 3 round firing by miscreants near anti-CAA protest site in
Phulwari Sharif, 3 people arrested
Anti-social elements opened fire against protesters demonstrating
against CAA, NPR and NRC on Friday night near the picket at Ishopur pipeline.
However, no one was reported injured in the firing.Patna police have also
confirmed that three rounds of firing were shot. According to some media
reports, 6 people came riding on three motorcycles, who opened fire. Police are
inspecting CCTV footage from nearby areas to look for the miscreants.The sit-in
protest against CAA has been going on for the last 28 days in Ishopur. On
Friday night also people were demonstrating in the area. Meanwhile, a sudden

New Delhi:A 20-something lad sits quiet with George Orwell’s Animal Farm
in his hand just about 50 metres from Shaheen Bagh protest site.Engrossed in
the allegory that addresses the issue of creating equal and free space for all,
he seems to be completely cut off from his not-so-quiet surrounding — where
protesters demanding equal rights to citizenship are raising slogans like
‘Kaagaz nahi dikhayenge’, ‘Inquilaab Zindabad’ with occasional breaks at the
sound of azan from a nearby mosque.However, he isn’t alone. There are many like
him — of different ages, some reading, some taking notes from specific books,
and others running their eyes through the covers of the books that are
displayed at Shaheen Bagh’s bus stand-turned-library.“It all started after the
violence in Jamia in December last year,” says Satya Prakash, one of the
organisers and also a Masters student in Jamia Millia.“There were also repeated
attempts to malign the movement in Shaheen Bagh saying the protesters here are

Delhi High Court has directed Delhi Govt and Delhi Police to submit
status reports in a contempt petition highlighting non-compliance with court's
earlier order banning use of loudspeakers by religious places between 10 pm to
6 am.The present contempt petition is moved by Sanjiv kumar, claiming that
almost all the mosques in Delhi are using loudspeakers, in violation of orders
passed by both the Supreme Court in 2005, as well as the Delhi High Court in
2019. The plea has been moved under the logic that if Hindus can give up
bursting of the firecrackers on Diwali, Muslims should also refrain from using
loudspeakers for the purpose of azan.The court's direction has been sought to
ask Delhi Govt to ban the use of loudspeakers for all mosques in Delhi, as the
same violates Supreme Court's order prohibiting use of loudspeakers from 10 pm
to 6 am. A similar direction is also sought for Union Govent, asking the Centre

Tamil Nadu budget: More funds to repair mosques and churches
Govt has raised the allocation for maintenance of mosques and churches
in the state, a move opposition said was aimed a wooing back the minorities who
are upset with AIADMK’s support for CAA.Deputy CM O Panneerselvam announced
that the fund for annual maintenance of mosques across the state had been
raised to ₹5 crore from ₹60 lakh. The Govt would spend ₹5 crore on repairs and

Board. Besides, scholarships to the tune of ₹98.66 crore would be disbursed to

The Supreme Court has come out with guidelines for expeditious hearing
of criminal appeals involving the death penalty, a decision which comes against
the backdrop of delay in execution of the four death row convicts in the 2012
Delhi gang rape and murder case. The SC has fixed a deadline of 6 months, from
the date of the verdict of the high court, for hearing an appeal against the
cases of a death sentence.In the circular, which was made public on Friday, it
is mentioned that in a matter wherein the High Court has confirmed/ upheld
death penalty and this court has granted leave (admission of case), the
criminal appeals will be listed for hearing not later than six months before
the three-judge bench from the date of grant of leave, irrespective of the fact
that appeal is ready or not."As soon as the special leave petition
involving death penalty is filed, a communication from the Registry may be sent
to the court appealed from to make ready and dispatch to this court the
certificate of service as well as the original record within a period of 60

17.Airtel responded to DoT order by offering to pay Rs 10,000 crore by February

DHAKA: Bangladesh Jammat-e-Islami senior leader Abdus Subhan, who was
convicted on war criminal charges and has been in jail since 2012, died in a
hospital Friday. The former lawmaker was taken to Dhaka Medical Hospital (DMCH)
from the country’s central jail Jan. 24.“Jamaat-e-Islami leader was undergoing
treatment at the hospital with old age complications and died today. His body
is kept at the morgue for autopsy and the process is underway to hand over the
dead body to his family,” DMCH Police Outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said.The
party and its student wing expressed sorry in a news release that said Nayeb-e-Ameer
of Jamaat and former 5-time lawmaker died deprived of proper treatment in jail
and cases brought against him were politically motivated, made as per the “Govt
