Jamaat-e-Islami Hind demands dismissal of UP CM, judicial probe in police 'atrocities' in UP
New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has
demanded the dismissal of UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath and a high-level
judicial probe into allegations of UP Police high-handedness and atrocities on anti-CAA protesters. Addressing the monthly press meet here today at its headquarters, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind's President Syed Sadatullah Hussaini said: “We reiterate our demand for the dismissal
of the UP Chief Minister - Yogi Adityanath, who failed to discharge his
constitutional obligations and unleashed a reign of terror in Uttar Pradesh by
targeting a particular community through the misuse of the state machinery. We condemn
the violence and high-handedness of the Uttar Pradesh police on its people in
the name of controlling the anti-CAA protests. We also condemn the inflammatory
language used by the UP CM who talked about taking “revenge” against the
state’s own citizens.”
Mr. Hussaini asserted: “We will not allow our democratic and
secular country to turn into a police state. Why was there no violence during
anti-CAA protests in non-BJP states? That is something fishy. We feel police indulged
in large-scale violence in Uttar Pradesh.
We can judge who was guilty only after a high level judicial probe as
the UP police are denying any wrongdoing.”
JIH National Secretary for Community Affairs, Malik Mohtasim Khan
talked about his visit to Uttar Pradesh. He said: “UP Police have fired
indiscriminately and without provocation on peaceful protests on numerous
occasions. The people who died in police firing received bullet injuries on the
upper part of their bodies. Why did the police not fire at their legs instead?
The UP Police entered homes, destroyed properties of citizens, and tortured the
young and old in custody. Video evidence shows UP police smashing CCTV cameras
and then proceeding to vandalize homes, cars and other vehicles. All these atrocities
seem to be directed towards the Muslim community. There are more than 20
reported deaths, hundreds injured and thousands of unnamed people are booked
under various sections so that the police have an open license to arrest people
randomly. We demand that this vindictive behavior by the UP government against
the Muslim community must end.”
Earlier briefing the media, Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami
Hind, Muhammad Salim Engineer said: “Jamaat-e-Islami Hind expresses great
disappointment over the government of India’s insensitive response to the
countrywide protests against the CAA-NRC-NPR. International media has also
taken notice of these huge protests. Despite such massive outrage, the cold
response of the government and the repressive crackdown on protestors in BJP
ruled states indicates that the government is stunned by the unexpected
response against the CAA-NRC-NPR and does not know how to secure the confidence
of its citizens. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister are contradicting each
other over implementation of the NRC. Instead of speaking to the protestors and
trying to address their concerns, the government has announced the
implementation of the NPR from April onwards this year. People have expressed
doubts over the NPR and feel that it is a tool, which will surreptitiously aid
and supplement the NRC and so the NPR must not be implemented by the state
governments until the CAA-NRC is withdrawn by the Union government. The
President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Syed Sadatullah Hussaini has written a
letter to the Chief Ministers of non-BJP states to that effect.”
Earlier, Salim Engineer condemned the violence around the Nankana Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan. He said: “It is
the duty of the government of Pakistan to ensure the safety, sanctity and
security of the religious site and protect the pilgrims and members of the Sikh
community from any act of violence, arson and vandalism. We hope this issue is
resolved at the earliest and any further escalation is prevented by timely
action.”
