India’s new citizenship law unnecessary: Bangladesh PM Hasina
India’s new citizenship law that aims to give rights to minority
communities of Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan was not necessary, Prime
Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has said.In a newspaper interview, she
said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had personally assured her that NRC was an
internal matter of India that would not affect her people.“We don’t understand
why (Indian government) did it. It was not necessary,” Ms. Hasina told Gulf
News in Abu Dhabi where she held high-level meetings. The statement is the first
by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since the controversial law, that has
triggered protests across India, was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on December
11.During the parliamentary debates, Home Minister Amit Shah repeatedly
referred to persecution faced by minority communities, mainly the Hindus, in
Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan arguing that these groups should get
citizenship rights in India. Ms. Hasina distanced her country from the line
taken by the Indian government.“It is an internal affair. Bangladesh has always
maintained that the CAA and NRC are internal matters of India. The government
of India, on their part, has also repeatedly maintained that the NRC is an
internal exercise of India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has in person
assured me of the same during my visit to New Delhi in October 2019,” she said
during the interview.Ms. Hasina’s government has said that minority communities
did not leave her country because of persecution and maintained that there is
no reverse migration from India either. “But within India, people are facing
many problems,” she declared. Hasina highlighted the burden that Myanmar’s
Rohingya refugees were placing on her country and said that the continued
presence of the million plus Rohingya in Bangladesh would affect security and
stability in the South Asian region. In her interview, Ms Hasina also said
there has been "no recorded migration from India" to Bangladesh where
about 10.7 per cent of total population of 160 million people are Hindus. "No,
there is no reverse migration from India. But within India, people are facing

Shaheen Bagh protesters make way for stuck ambulance as cops watch
Several people came to the rescue of an ambulance stuck on Kalindi Kunj
road due to the ongoing anti-CAA protest at Shaheen Bagh and blockage of the
stretch which is the way to several major hospitals in the city.A CCTV video
shared by India Today reporter Tanushree Pandey on Twitter on Saturday showed
an ambulance stuck in the middle of the road as a few cops were standing and
watching instead of rushing to help the emergency vehicle.The footage then
showed one or two men running to make way for the ambulance. A man put one of
the barricades on the side, let the ambulance pass and then placed it
back.Another video from Saturday shared by Twitter users showed protesters
clearing the road for an ambulance to pass through the protest site in Shaheen
Bagh.The protesters have also put a banner on the road saying "welcome
ambulance" in red bold letters, saying that they will open the road for

Lucknow:“Kambal Chor UP Police (Blanket thief, UP police)” was trending
on Twitter on Sunday after women protesters holding a sit-in against CAA at
Lucknow’s iconic Clocktower accused the police of snatching away their
supplies, food items and blankets in night. Protesters posted videos showing
policemen carrying away the supplies with them late on Saturday even as those
demonstrating at site raised an objection.“Yogi’s police looting things from
mothers and sisters. Look how they are looting things from the Clocktower,” Congress
worker Sadaf Jafar posted on social media along with a video of the police

deputation. Judge Chudawala has presided over the trial following the transfer
of the earlier judge, JK Pandya, as an industrial court member at Rajkot in May
2019. Judge Pandya discharged two key accused — DG Vanzara and NK Amin — the
same month, thereby dropping all criminal proceedings against the two in the

Scientists write to US universities for inviting ‘anti-science’ activist

Bengaluru: Scientists and biotechnology experts from around the world
have written two open letters to the Stanford University and University of
California-Santa Cruz (UC-SC) protesting invitations extended to Indian
anti-biotechnology activist Vandana Shiva to speak on “equitable and
sustainable” farming methods.The letters raise concern about Shiva’s “constant
use of anti-scientific rhetoric to support unethical positions”. They also lay
out some of her earlier positions on farming and comments which the experts
believe are factually incorrect.Shiva is a prominent proponent of land
redistribution and farmers’ rights, besides Ayurveda and organic foods. She has
been accused of being funded by organic food companies to speak out against

Berlin summit should ensure Libya cease-fire: Erdogan
Ahead of Libya conference in Berlin, Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan
told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Berlin conference should
ensure a cease-fire and political dialogue for Libyan peace.“It should be
ensured that a cease-fire and return to political process are agreed at the
Berlin summit in order for Libya to attain peace and calm,” Erdogan said in
Berlin during the televised part of the meeting with Putin.Erdogan also said:
“[Gen. Khalifa] Haftar's aggressive attitudes must end to implement the phase
of political process and solution [in Libya].”“Joint efforts on Libya provided
relative calm in field but our initiatives will reap fruits with Berlin
