One of
Modi’s biggest successes was getting Gujarat riots case quashed: Amartya Sen
Nobel laureate Amartya
Sen, in an interview published in The New Yorker, has said that one of PM
Narendra Modi’s biggest successes has been to “get the court” to acquit him in
2002 Gujarat riots case. In the
interview, Sen spoke to Isaac Chotiner about the current state of the Indian
democracy, and how not all is lost yet. When
asked about Modi’s connection to 2002 Gujarat riots that killed over a thousand
people, and still getting elected, Sen said, “One of his big successes has been
to get the court to squash the case against him and the Home Minister, Amit Shah,
in Gujarat killings of 2002.” Sen said because of this, not many Indians
believe that Modi had a part to play in the riots. Sen also said that while
Modi was a dynamic politician, he did not have the “breadth of vision” about
the country. “Modi doesn’t have the breadth of vision about India—multireligious,
multiethnic India. He has been, from his childhood, relating to RSS and the
propaganda of that perspective,” Sen said. However, Sen highlighted that BJP was
also a party that was backed by business community and managed to find more
money than any other political party in the run-up to 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Sen
said that while the Indian Constitution was “well based on analysis of the
Constituent Assembly”, it overlooked the fact that a political group with much
power, like BJP, could manipulate the situation easily. “Electoral system has
its flaws. That massive majority(Modi had was based on less than 40%of vote,”he

Taliban commanders freed 'in swap for 3 Indian hostages':BBC
Several senior Taliban
members have been released in exchange for 3 kidnapped Indian engineers,
sources in the militant group told BBC. 11 Taliban reported freed included a
member of the militant Haqqani group.Indians released on Sunday were part of a
group of 7 engineers kidnapped more than a year ago with their driver in
northern Afghanistan. The news came after Taliban were said to have met the US peace

senior members of the group in Pakistan last week, almost a month after
President Donald Trump cancelled secret plans to host a Taliban delegation in
US.The prisoner swap was one of the issues discussed at the meeting, sources said.

the source within the militant group, including ex "shadow" governor

Sen
slams Modi Govt for clampdown in Kashmir
Nobel Economics laureate
Amartya Sen has accused successive Indian Govts of not doing enough on Kashmir
and instead of doubling efforts to silence separatists in the state thereby
turning them more pro-Pakistan in their outlook. Sen said the present Kashmir
looks like more an Indian-administered territory rather than an integral part
of the country and that fault is solely the responsibility of successive Govts.
While not faulting Modi Govt directly on Kashmir, Sen said dilution of Article
370 need not have been done since that arrangement suited both sides. He said by
resorting to such measures, Modi Govt has exploited peoples’ weakness for a
cause.Sen was, however, scathing in his comments on attack on secularism and
the targeting of Muslims, Dalits and scheduled tribes inIndia. newsx
Communication
blackout in Kashmir truly a digital siege: Ex-Stanford University Scholar Jan
Rydzak
Jan Rydzak, a research
scholar who has been recently working at Stanford University’s Global Digital
Policy Incubator (GDPi), is one of prominent global experts on internet
shutdowns and information control. Earlier this year, he published a paper
giving statistical details about the connection between internet shutdowns and
protests in India. His research established that the Kashmir Valley has so far
seen the highest number of state imposed internet shutdowns in the world.Rydzak
said, “Internet shutdowns don’t seem to be effective against any kind of
protest, violent or non-violent”. He said, "Access to Internet is a human
right. 3 years ago, UN Human Rights Council issued a declaration to this effect,
and although it is non-binding and not all of the member states in this body
are shining examples of Internet freedom, it still has lots of weight from a
normative standpoint."He said, "Most blackouts in Kashmir are
ephemeral, lasting approximately 3 to 5 days on average; at 60 days and
running, this one is a true digital siege. As we have seen elsewhere in the
world – Cameroon, for example – such sieges are especially ruinous for digital
economies. The stagnation of businesses in Kashmir under blackout is further
proof of that."caravandaily

Kashmir lockdown enters 3rd month, several youth risk losing jobs
Srinagar:The
communication blackout imposed after the abrogation of Article 370 has entered

IT-related firms are at the verge of shutting down permanently. Kashmir’s

denies report of Saudi Prince recalling private jet flying Imran Khan
New Delhi :Pakistan today
dismissed a report that claimed that its PM Imran Khan had to take a commercial
flight back home from New York after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman
ordered his “private jet to disembowel Pakistani delegation” following Khan’s
speech at 74th UN General Assembly session last month.Khan-led PTI Govt has
dismissed as “utter fabrication” an editorial published in Friday Times weekly
magazine that claims the Saudi prince snubbed Khan over “some dimensions of
Khan’s diplomacy in New York”.It was earlier reported that while returning to
Pakistan, Khan and his delegation were forced to return to New York after the
special jet given to him by the Saudi Govt developed a technical fault while
heading to Islamabad. He then took a commercial flight back to Pakistan. Khan
had arrived at US on a “special aircraft” of Saudi prince who had called him
his “special guest”. “Inexplicably, Saudi crown prince, Mohammad bin Salman,
was so alienated by some dimensions of the Pakistani PM’s diplomacy in New York
– he couldn’t have been happy at the prospect of Imran Khan, Tayyib Erdogan and
Mahathir Mohammad planning to jointly represent Islamic bloc, nor with
Pakistan’s interlocution with Iran without his explicit approval — that he
visibly snubbed Imran by ordering his private jet to disembowel the Pakistani
delegation,” says the editorial written by journalist Najam Sethi.“It is
totally false and absolutely carries no truth whatsoever,”a Pakistan Govt
spokesman said quoted by Express Tribune. Reacting to writeup, Govt official
said report carried “baseless self-created theory with respect to premier’s
meetings with leaders of Turkey and Malaysia in New York”. indianexpress

Gandhi's Meditation in Cambodia May be Masterplan for His 2nd Innings: News 18
News of Rahul Gandhi
going off for ‘vipassana’ to Cambodia for a few days has created a flutter. It
leaves many of his chosen leaders in confusion as his meditation comes in the
midst of crisis for young and restless in the Congress. What’s common in the
rebellion of Ashok Tanwar, Sanjay Nirupam and Pradyot Debbarman is that all
spoke of the "tyranny" of Old Guard over the young — “Rahul’s people
are being attacked and sidelined by Sonia’s group.”In fact, before quitting the
party, Tanwar said: “Mera maseeha hi mera qaatil hai” (my messiah was my
killer) — a reference to the fact that he was chosen by Rahul and targeted by
Bhupinder Hooda for being a part of the young guard. The timing of Rahul’s
sudden departure comes as a surprise. It’s not just in the midst of the state
elections but also when his team is facing the heat. Many juniors who are still
with the party are unhappy and at a loss with regards to their future. So why
then did Rahul leave right now? And why isn’t he breaking his silence? Sources
close to his office say Rahul will be back soon and will campaign in the last
leg but he will not be the face of the party campaign nor canvass aggressively
as he did during the Lok Sabha elections.Sources say the restlessness of the
young guard is not lost on him but the Gandhi scion prefers to wait this time.
“When Indira Gandhi was about to take charge of the party, the seniors made her
life hell. She faced stiff opposition and rebuke. This time, it is his
[Rahul’s] mother’s team that is making his life tough,” said a senior leader.

chunk of data on Swiss bank account holders
India has got first chunk of Swiss bank
account details of its nationals under a new automatic information exchange
pact, a major milestone in Govt's fight against black money stashed
abroad.India is among 75 countries with which Switzerland's Federal Tax
Administration (FTA) has exchanged information on financial accounts within
framework of global standards on Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI), FTA
spokesperson told PTI.The next exchange would take place in Sept.2020, the
spokesperson added. This is the first time that India has received details from
Swiss authorities under AEOI framework, which provides for exchange of
information on financial accounts, currently active as well as those accounts
that were closed during 2018, the year in which framework agreement became
effective. However, information exchange is governed by strict confidentiality clauses,
and FTA officials refused to disclose specific details on the number of
accounts or about the quantum of financial assets associated with Indian
clients of Swiss banks. However, AEOI only relates to accounts that are
officially in the name of Indians and they might include those used for
business and other genuine purposes.PTI
Food
Corporation of India’s debt increases 3-fold under the 5 years of the Modi rule
FCI, responsible for
overseeing National Food Security Act, does not have any stream of income of
its own. In the 5 years of the Modi Era, Food Corporation of India has seen its
debt level magnified itself from ₹91,409 crore to ₹2.65 lakh crore in March
2019.The debt levels went starkly up in 2016-17, because Govt decided to start giving credit to FCI
from the National Small Savings Fund (NSSF) to fuse the gap between what the
Govt should have provided for in the fiscal budget and what it could actually
dispense due to its budgetary constraints, according to The Print.FCI is
completely dependent for revenue on Centre. Centre is responsible to fix minimum
support price for buying the foodgrains from farmers, as well as the issue
price which is the price at which they are supplied to the states. This
difference, along with cost of distribution, are paid by Govt to FCI in the
form of food subsidy.

US
troops start pullout in Syria as Turkey prepares operation
US troops began
withdrawing from northeast Syria ahead of a Turkish invasion that Kurdish fighters
say will overturn the victory over ISIL group. Washington's forces "will
not support or be involved in [Turkish] operation" and "will no
longer be in the immediate area", White House Press Secretary Stephanie
Grisham said in a statement. It was not clear whether that meant the US would
withdraw its 1,000 or so troops completely from northern Syria."Turkey
will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into northern
Syria," said the statement.A US official said US forces had on Monday
evacuated two observation posts at Tel Abyad and Ras al Ain in northeast Syria,
along Turkish border. Other US troops in the region were still in position for
now, the official said. The withdrawal marks a major shift in US policy and
effectively abandons a US ally in the battle against ISIL, which took over
swathes of Syria before being defeated a year ago.US President Donald Trump on
Monday defended the decision to withdraw US troops from northern Syria, saying
it was too costly to keep supporting its allies."Kurds fought with us but
were paid massive amounts of money and equipment to do so. They have been
fighting Turkey for decades,"Trump said in tweets. "Turkey, Europe,
Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds will now have to figure situation out."aljazeera

Impeachment
peril engulfs Trump’s WH, historians say ‘worse than Watergate’
As impeachment alarm has
engulfed Donald Trump's White house and a second whistleblower has come forward
about former's dealings with Ukraine and asking for dirt on his political
opponent Joe Biden,Americas top legal minds weighed in on the big questions
that were consuming Washington DC: Is Trump asking for dirt from a foreign
country an impeachable offence? Was this about personal interest or foreign
policy? Does the House have enough evidence to impeach Trump? What does this
moment mean in the wide arc of Americas history? Is this what impeachment was
made for?"I think this ranks with or right above Watergate, just
historically speaking," Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning and NYT
bestselling presidential historian and journalist, told MSNBC. IANS
Israel
seeking 'non-aggression' deal with Gulf states
Israeli Foreign Minister
Israel Katz has said he is seeking "non-aggression" agreements with
Gulf states, as relations between two sides warm against common foe Iran. The
Israeli minister, who met Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al
Khalifa in July, wrote on Twitter on Sunday that aim was to eventually forge
future peace agreements with the Arabs. All 22 Arab countries - except Egypt and
Jordan - do not recognise Israel over latter's illegal occupation of Arab lands
in Palestine and Syria."Recently, I have been promoting, under the backing
of US, a political initiative to sign 'non-aggression agreements' with the Arab
Gulf states," Katz wrote on Twitter on Sunday."The historic move will
put an end to the conflict and allow civilian cooperation until peace
agreements are signed."It is seen as the latest push by Israel to improve
relations with Gulf states who do not formally recognise Israel and do not have
formal diplomatic relations. In his tweet, Katz said he discussed the
"non-aggression" plan with Arab foreign ministers and US President
Donald Trump's outgoing envoy for Middle East Jason Greenblatt during the

pulled out of a $5bn deal to develop a portion of Iran's massive offshore
natural gas field, the Islamic Republic's oil minister said.South Pars field
deal, struck in the wake of Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, appears
to be just the latest business casualty of US' pressure campaign on Tehran
following President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal of US from deal.It
also comes as China and US engage in their own trade war, as Beijing and
Washington levy billions of dollars of tariffs on each other's goods.Oil
Minister Bijan Zangeneh, quoted by ministry's SHANA, said on Sunday China
National Petroleum Corp was "no longer in the project".He did not elaborate
or give any reason for the withdrawal, though SHANA said the company "had
pulled out of a contract" to develop the field.aljazeera
