At receiving end in one Rajasthan town, Dalits say may embrace Islam
Hindaun; An 8-feet statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar marks Jatav Basti, home to several thousand Scheduled Caste families in Hindaun city, in Rajasthan’s Karauli district. A day after an upper caste mob tried to attack the settlement, groups of angry men are gathered around the statue vowing to “convert to Islam” if similar incidents continue.“They checked our identity cards to make sure we were Dalits before they thrashed us. They were all from upper castes and didn’t even spare the women,” said Ashwini Jatav, taking off his shirt and showing his bruised back. The mob, provoked by the Bharat Bandh held by SC/ST outfits on Monday, attacked houses of two Dalit politicians — Rajkumari Jatav, the BJP MLA from Hindaun, and the Congress’s Bharosi Lal Jatav, who represented the seat earlier — located near the Jatav Basti. The politicians were not at home at the time of the attack.A day later, a large number of police personnel were deployed near the burnt houses. Hindaun remained under curfew for most part of the day, with the Internet suspended. Armed police personnel patrolled the streets where debris of destroyed vehicles lay around. While Ashwini claimed that many of the assaulters were members of Hindu fundamentalist groups, police denied this. “At this moment, there is no evidence to indicate involvement of Hindu fundamentalist groups.Preliminary investigation suggests there was an anti-Jatav sentiment among other castes who also accused Jatav community of molesting a few women during Bharat Bandh. We are investigating all these accusations and counter-accusations,” said Additional DGP, Law and Order, NRK Reddy. He added that the mob wanted to proceed towards the Jatav settlement but was dispersed by police. But by that time, they had already torched the houses of the two politicians.Dalits say they were beaten up near Station Road, the main road in the city, with several shops on both sides of the road.Other members of the Jatav community said “anti-social” elements were behind the violence. In statements given to the local media, BJP MLA Rajkumari Jatav appealed to people to cooperate in maintaining law and order. Pushpendra Jatav said while they had participated in the Bharat Bandh, “ours was a peaceful protest”.“We were specifically targeted by the upper castes, who united against us… If this goes on, we will have no choice but to convert to Islam,”said 47-year-old.“We are anyway not counted as Hindus. We are still ignored,”added Chandramohan Jatav, 40, another resident of the settlement, Ashwini said they were afraid to talk too much. “If they can burn the houses of the MLA, who are we?Upper caste people have police, administration…even most of the media tells their story.”While Monday’s Bharat Bandh too had seen violence, with protesters uprooting railway tracks and damaging public property, Nathilal Jatav,a community elder, said they had only wanted a peaceful demonstration and “anti-social elements” were behind what happened. Appealing for calm, he added,“There was no intention to resort to violence or to damage property.”indianexpress

Dalit protests: Sons shot, 2 families in Bhind struggle to grasp politics, economics
Bhind: Pradeep Jatav’s friends say he was restless and ambitious — all he wanted was to give his landless labourer-parents a good life. In Feb., Pradeep, 22, completed a diploma from an Industrial Training Institute in Gwalior, nearly 100 km from their village, Mustura, in Bhind district. Some 25 km from Bhind town, the village has acres of arid land and long queues near Govt tankers, indicating the looming water crisis in the region with the onset of summer. “He had received a few job offers but turned them down as they were low-paying. He was waiting for a better offer,” Ram Naresh, Pradeep’s father, said.On Monday, Pradeep had gone to the nearby Mehgaon market, where many Dalits had gathered against the Supreme Court’s recent order on the SC and ST Act.“Around 11 am, Sonu Baishandar, Mini and Ballu Rathore fired at him from a roof,” FIR lodged after his death states.Bhind SP Prashant Khare said a case of murder has been lodged but no one has been arrested yet.indianexpress
After Savitri Bai Phule, another Dalit BJP MP blasts Yogi govt for ‘ignoring’ him
After Bahraich MP Savitri Bai Phule, another Dalit parliamentarian has targeted Yogi Govt in UP  for allegedly ignoring his pleas for assistance in a political dispute. In a letter to PM Narendra Modi, Robertsganj BJP MP Chhotelal accused CM Yogi Adityanath, party state unit president Mahendra Nath Pandey and party organisation secretary Sunil Bansal of shrugging off his plea for help against several office-bearers of the Chandauli BJP unit who had allegedly hatched a conspiracy against his brother. This fresh outburst has further shocked the state BJP leadership at a time when it is struggling to deal with Savitri Bai Phule’s “rebellion” in a way that won’t appear anti-Dalit. UP Govt has planned several programmes in the run-up to Dalit icon Bhimrao Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14 to drive home the message that it is working for the welfare of lower caste communities. The recent Bharat Bandh called by Dalit groups across the country had also hurt the saffron party.HT
Bhima Koregaon riots: Politically motivated steps, ‘mishandled events’ led to violence, suggests report by SC panel
Pune: National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), which conducted an independent probe into Koregaon Bhima violence, has submitted its report to President Ram Nath Kovind and Centre.Swaraj Vidwaan, member of 5th NCSC who acted as an observer while drafting the report, said their findings indicated that serious “mishandling” of events had led to violent clashes between Dalits and Marathas during the 200th anniversary celebrations of Battle of Bhima Koregaon. Vidwaan and other members of NCSC, who were in Pune on Wednesday, didn’t divulge too many details about the report. “I will share details of the report at a later stage…it has been submitted to the President and the central govt. What I can share, though, is that we found clear indications of politically motivated steps…people being forced to carry out certain anti-social activities. Many events were poorly handled and they snowballed later,”she said.Vidwaan had visited Pune in Aug last year, soon after the 5th commission was constituted in July 2017, and lashed out at Police over their alleged indifference towards hearing cases filed by members of SC  and ST.IE
To Keep Dalits at Lowest Rung of Society is in DNA of RSS-BJP: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: “I salute to the thousands of Dalit brothers and sisters who came out on the streets to demand the Modi Govt  to protect their rights,” said Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday – the day when tens and thousands of people from the Dalit community held massive demonstration across the country against an alleged dilution in the SC/ST Act through an order of the Supreme Court.Unleashing all-out attack on the BJP, RSS and the Govt  of PM  Narendra Modi, Rahul said: “To keep Dalits at the lowest rung of the Indian society is in DNA of RSS-BJP. They suppress anyone who challenges this mindset. As the Dalit protests turned violent at several places in the country, the Congress stepped up its attack on the Govt. At least 11 people were killed in the violence on Monday – at least six of them in the BJP-ruled MP alone.Caravan News

India is nation of most unemployed in world: Labour Bureau Statistics
According to the Labour Bureau statistics, India has, today, become the nation of the most unemployed in the world; in the inclusive growth index we are at number 60 and in this case, we are far behind our neighbours. On the economic development front, inequality and increasing unemployment is the biggest challenge for the fast emerging India. Self-employment opportunities are declining in the country and jobs are continuously decreasing. But at the same time, another picture is that India is one of the fastest growing peak economies in the world. At some point in time, we have managed to climb up 30 places in the 'Business Accessibility Index'. So the question arises that what is the path of development that we are going to follow to ensure employment generation and equality for everyone?Indeed, the pace of increasing inequality in India has reached historically high levels. The gap between the rich and the poor has increased alarmingly. This situation is the result of our unemployment growth and non-public spending on GDP growth path.In the last few decades, most of the countries in the world have developed their economies, but due to privatisation, public capital, and resources have been reduced to the hands of selected few.In India, economic reforms were implemented in 90s. Since then, there has been an unprecedented creation of wealth in the country.According to Credit Suisse Global, multinational financial services company, since 2000, there has been an increase in the value of 9.9 % annually in India, while its global average has been only 6%.But its benefits have not been found in the large population of the country. Despite India's share in global assets (sixth), the average assets of Indians are much lower than the global average.ANI

In a first revelation, Facebook has said that data of nearly 5.6 lakh Indian users may have been “improperly” shared with British political analytics company Cambridge Analytica (CA). Responding to a notice from Govt of India, a spokesperson for Facebook said:"We are investigating the specific number of people whose information was accessed by the app, including those in India."CA’s acquisition of Facebook data through the app developed by Dr. Aleksandr Kogan and his company Global Science Research Limited (“GSR”) happened without our authorization and was an explicit violation of our Platform policies."The numbers that we have now are that only 335 people in India installed the App, which is 0.1% of the App's total worldwide installs."We further understand that 562,120 additional people in India were potentially affected, as friends of people who installed the App. This yields a total of 562,455 potentially affected people in India, which is 0.6% of the global number of potentially affected people.” thehindu

Irani could not have dared issue such an order without PM’s approval: Yashwant Sinha
New Delhi:“Smriti Irani could not have dared issue the fake news order without PM's approval. There is no question that in a Govt  where not even a pin drops without the PM’s approval, Minister could have taken this kind of advantage of the system,” said former Minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha. Sinha was categorical that there was no way that the order threatening to strip journalists of their Govt  accreditation as punishment for fake news, could have been passed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting without PM Narendra Modi’s knowledge.A senior Minister earlier with long experience of both Govt  and the BJP, Sinha said that the PM took advantage of the order when it became clear that the order had not worked, and moved in to “ditch” Irani who was merely following orders. In fact, after the announcement, some TV news channels lauded PM as a “hero.”Sinha, follows journalist and ex-Minister Arun Shourie, in underlining the fact that such a major move could not have been taken by Irani without the PM’s full sanction. “There is no doubt in my mind that the whole thing was thought out by the PM  and it was all done at his initiative,” Sinha said. But then as the reaction was more than expected, he decided to leave Irani in the lurch and distanced himself from his own measure,Sinha added.thecitizen
Delhi: Muslim women flock Ramlila to protest against Triple Talaq Bill
New Delhi: Thousands of burqa-clad women carrying placards showing resentments against the proposed Triple Talaq Bill, gathered at historical Ramlila Maidan, protesting against the proposed Bill. Speaker Atiya Siddique addressed the gathering and said Islam has provided complete code of conduct related with socioeconomic system of life which covers the family system also.“We the Muslim women are very well protected under our Islamic Shariat Law, compared to other developing family and social laws. We are comfortable with our Muslim Personal Law, we do not need any alteration in it, under any circumstances, especially when intensions are bad,” she said. Other women speakers like Fatima Muzaffar, Dr Asma Zihra the convener of Women Wing of Personal Law Board highlighted the defects of the Bill. She said: “We strongly feel that Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) act 2017 was passed in haste in the Lok Sabha; bypassing the established Parliamentary practices and Rules of Procedure of the Lok Sabha.“Further, it is extremely surprised that the Bill was processed without consulting the top religious scholars, intellectuals of the community etc. Even Muslim women/groups or Women right activists/group that were involved with the campaign and struggle in favor of Muslim women rights for several decades were also kept in dark.“We further feel that there was no urgency in bringing forth such a Bill as the Supreme Court, by a majority, had already held that the practice of Triple Talaq was invalid and it was wrong for the Govt  to cite the minority judgment, which is not binding, to bring forth the legislation.”Maulana Jalaluddin Umri, president Jamat Islami Hind in said with this type of Bill/law the chances of abandon (separated) of married women will be more compare to divorce and remarried women. In fact, for fear of prosecution, many Muslim men, just like others, instead of divorcing their wives, may now simply abandon them. In result she will be deserted vulnerable life (neither with husband nor without husband). “It is known fact that in Muslim Culture & Society remarriages of women is common. Divorce should not be seen as end of life for women,” he said.Maulana Abu Talib Rahmani said according to this proposed bill, if a Muslim husband says Triple Talaq to his wife he will go to jail, but what will be the status of wife? “Will she remain his wife or will become a divorcee? Further the husband will have to pay maintenance amount to his wife and children from jail, what type of job or business the Govt  will provide to him in jail? The jail provision along with maintenance looks like the Husband is going to some foreign country for earning.”The peaceful demonstration came to an end with dua recitation by Secretary AIMPLB Maulana Mohammad Fazlurrahim Mujaddidi.okhlatimes

Secular group to file an intervention application before SC challenging AIMPLB on polygamy, halala
Mumbai; Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD), along with other Muslim outfits will file an intervention application against the petitions pending before the Supreme Court seeking declaration of polygamy, nikah halala and all other temporary forms of marriage as unconstitutional, hence challenging AIMPLB. All these practices should be abolished as they violate Article 14 (right to equality), Article 15 and Article 21 (right to life with dignity). Such practices are also contrary to core values of Islam, said Feroze Mithiborewala, co-convenor, IMSD.The outfits questioned the male-centric leadership of AIMPLB which had unleashed a spectacle of thousands of burqa-clad women protesting across the country. The same maulvis who preach that decent women should neither be seen nor heard in public today have no qualms in giving them marching orders and are parading them on streets, said Hasina Khan of Bebaak Collective.UNI
Muslim body announces boycott of secular group
Milli Shoora, a body which recently worked with AIMPLB to organise the women's rally against the draft bill of triple talaq, has reached out to people from the community asking them to boycott Teesta Setalvad, Javed Anand and Hasan Kamaal — members of the Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD) group which held a press conference on Tuesday wherein the members criticised AIMPLB for the rally. They said that the AIMPLB was giving an impression that the community is always against the Supreme Court verdict and misleading the community which does not augur well for it."Although Teesta and Javed had done work on fighting the Gujarat riots case, they are a dual sword for the community because they are against Shariat and Islam," said Zubair Azmi, who was one of the people who had organised Bhendi Bazaar Urdu Festival and is the convenor of Milli Shoora."The community needs to be careful of them and we have also sent messages to boycott them. We will be taking meetings and telling people to boycott them too. They have the freedom to have their views but they are against Shariat and Islam," said Azmi."I have seen that message. He is a complete fanatic and had once sent a message that people not attend a Sufi person's funeral. We were in any case not eager to seek his company," said Javed Anand, part of IMSD.dnaindia
Kashmiri doctors appalled at police firing inside Shopian hospital; call for intervention
Srinagar:Doctors Association of Kashmir has strongly objected to the firing incident inside the district hospital in Shopian by the Police on Sunday, April 1 when the Valley witnessed the death of 13 militants, 4 civilians, and 3 army men.“It is a matter of great shame that police personnel resorted to indiscriminate firing inside the premises of district hospital when they barged into the hospital to retrieve a dead body,Dr Suhail Naik, President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) said. He said that in addition to this dastardly act, forces also damaged the hospital property.“It is sheer luck that none of the staff was injured or killed in this incident. Doctors and other staff are still in a state of mental shock and are not able to deliver their duties effectively since this unfortunate incident,” he said.Dr Naik further said “according to Geneva Convention, in the war zones hospitals and ambulances are spared but it is very unfortunate these rules are thrown in the trash in this part of the world and we are at the receiving end by making us easy targets. 5 Muslims accused of waging war against India acquitted of all charges after 17-yrs, but they may walk free
Anees Ahmed, Mohammed Ali, Mohammed Yunus, Sultan Ahmed and Ghyasuddin. All of these men are residents of Gohalpur. Between Sept.27 and Oct.1, 2001,they attended a pre-Muharram meeting at a place called Beni Singh ki Tillaya near their village of Gohalpur. Meeting, conducted just before Muharram that year, was to advise women to wear Burqa/ Niqaab during the following days and protect themselves. What followed was a religious congregation like millions conducted across the country. Among the people in the audience sat the 5 men mentioned above. Since the speakers used some references from the Quran and Hadith, pamphlets distributed among the crowd needed to be translated in Hindi/Urdu and the 5 men were among a number of volunteers who helped with the translation. It is an act that has seen them stuck in jail since 2008. But to understand how and why this happened, we must go back to Sept.2001, especially Sept.27. Even before the then NDA Govt decided to ban India’s largest Muslim student organisation, the Delhi Police had been investigating SIMI and its members. On Sept.27, 2001, finally, SIMI was banned by Indian Govt and subsequently, several members of the organisation were picked up by police across the nation. 17 years later, all of this seems mostly immaterial and irrelevant. While the Indian state machinery and the corporate media spent a considerable time telling Indians just how dangerous SIMI and its members were, the truth is that when it comes to convictions, Indian Govt  has precious little to offer.TwoCircles
Israeli firms IAI, Rafael taken off restricted list after closure of corruption case
New Delhi: Israeli missile firms IAI and Rafael have been officially taken off the restricted list by the ministry of defence with the closure of infamous Barak corruption cases, leaving the state owned companies free to transact in the Indian market.2firms had been put on the restricted list after they were named in a CBI probe into the procurement of Barak anti-aircraft missiles in 2006. CBI investigated charges of corruption against former defence minister George Fernandes and arms dealer Suresh Nanda but had closed the case in 2013 after failing to find evidence.Even though the closure report of the CBI had been accepted by a special court in Jan. 2017, both IAI and Rafael continued to remain on the defence ministry’s restricted list due to bureaucratic procedure that does not allow an automatic reprieve. In an order issued Wednesday, the ministry said it had taken off all restrictions on both companies with the approval of defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman. “In the light of the acceptance of the closure report…..it had been decided to remove the restrictions and regulations…in dealing with procurement cases involving IAI, Israel and Rafael, Israel with immediate effect,” the ministry order said.Despite being on the restricted list, business dealings have been conducted with both the firms for fairly large projects. theprint
Bihar Govt to Repair Riot-hit Mosque, Madrassa; Coalition Partner BJP Questions Move
Patna: A controversy has erupted in Bihar after the state Govt  decided to release funds for repairing a riot-hit mosque and madrassa in Samastipur and compensate victims of communal violence in other districts. The home department, headed by CM Nitish Kumar, on Wednesday allotted Rs 2, 13,700 for repairing Gudri mosque and Jiaul-Ulum Madrassa which, as the order reads, were damaged in the recent communal violence. Govt has also released Rs.25 lakh as compensation ‘for those whose shops were burnt in arson during Ramnavami procession’ in Aurangabad. Similar arrangement of Rs. 8.5 lakh has been made for compensating six affected people in Nawada district.Kumar’s coalition partner BJP has questioned the move. Ram Sumiran Singh, Samastipur district head of BJP, said, “Both communities have been hit by the violence. This is unfortunate that Govt  decided to compensate only a particular community.”Referring to arrest of 9 BJP supporters, he alleged that the administration was targeting people in impartial way.News18
Delhi HC asks Govt about Manmohan Singh’s letter to Jama Masjid Imam
New Delhi: Delhi High Court in a hearing on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Culture to comply with its directions to produce a file that apparently contained a letter from former PM  Manmohan Singh. Wherein, he had assured the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid that the mosque would not be declared a protected monument.Petitioner Suhail Ahmed Khan had demanded that the mosque should be declared a protected monument. His advocate Devinder Pal Singh said the file appeared to have gone “untraceable”. “How can a file on such an important issue, where the then PM had something to write, is lost,” Singh asked.Khan had filed an application seeking the production of the file around fifteen days back. The HC on August 23, 2017, had summoned the entire file pertaining to Jama Masjid. The court wanted to know the reason given by UPA Govt for not declaring the mosque a protected monument.
ET had reported in April 2015 that Archaeological Survey of India had produced Manmohan Singh’s 2004 letter to the imam, Syed Ahmed Bukhari. The court, on Febr.27, gave a week’s time to the ministry to “disclose the position of the monument and status of the file”.siasat

What will be the character of the child this woman gives birth to? Name of these children is ‘transgender’ or ‘napumsakam’ ‘Hijra’. Already, over 6 lakh trans people have been born in Kerala.”He did not stop here. He concluded that good children were born to men and women who ‘lived their lives as men and women.’“ But, when a woman degrades her womanhood and a man degrades his manhood, the girl child born to the couple will have the character of a man.Child that she eventually gives birth to, will be born transgender,” he added.jantakareporter
Aadhaar can do little to stop bank frauds: SC slams centre
New Delhi:The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that Aadhaar cannot stop bank frauds, adding, officials seemingly are hand in glove with the fraudsters.A 5-judge constitution bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra, which is examining the validity of Aadhaar scheme, said the biometric database is not a solution to effectively discourage bank scams, as there is no doubt about the identity of the fraudsters.“The bank knows whom it is giving loan to and it is the bank officials who are hand in glove with the fraudster. Aadhaar can do little to stop it,” said the bench. Central Govt  has made it mandatory for all financial institutions, including banks, to verify and link Aadhaar of the customers with their accounts. The apex court’s observation is significant as it slams the Govt  which is already entangled in the recent spate of multi-crore financial frauds plaguing the banking sector.caravandaily

Trump: Saudis need to pay if they want US troops to stay in Syria
US President Donald Trump has said that Saudi Arabia might have to pay if it wants continuing US presence in Syria."We've almost completed that task [of defeating ISIL] and we'll be making a determination very quickly, in coordination with others in the area, as to what we'll do," said Trump on Tuesday during a White House press conference with leaders from three Baltic nations."Saudi Arabia is very interested in our decision, and I said, 'Well, you know, you want us to stay, maybe you're going to have to pay'."Trump spoke on Monday with the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz, over the phone to discuss a range of regional issues, including a peace plan between Israelis and Palestinians and opportunities to strengthen the American-Saudi strategic partnership. But the White House statement of the call, released on Tuesday, did not mention any discussion about Saudi Arabia's boosting funding for US military efforts in Syria.Trump's remarks appeared to contradict the rhetoric on Syria from other top US officials. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had pledged an enduring presence in Syria last year. But Trump reiterated calls to end US presence in the region, after he made similar statements at an event in Ohio last week.

In his statement, Khamenei called on the people of Muslim countries to defeat Israel."With an intense and planned struggle they should force the enemy to retreat toward the point of demise," he said. The comments came after Saudi Arabia's crown prince said Israelis were entitled to live peacefully on their own land.Saudi Arabia does not officially recognise Israel, but Mohammed bin Salman's comments, quoted in the US magazine The Atlantic, are a further sign of an apparent thawing in bilateral ties. They come as mainly Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia faces off against predominantly Shia Iran in a regional power struggle.
