US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson isn’t
sending a top delegation to accompany Ivanka Trump to a business summit in
India because he doesn’t want to promote her on the world stage, CNN reported.
In her highest-profile international event yet, first daughter is attending 3-day
Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad, sponsored by the State Dept and
India. A theme of the summit is female economic empowerment. A senior State
Dept source told CNN that “no one higher than the deputy assistant secretary is
allowed to participate” in the India trip. Tillerson’s staff “won’t send
someone senior because they don’t want to bolster Ivanka,” the source said.
Tillerson has a history of tension with the White House, and this could be the
newest chapter. President Donald Trump has appeared to contradict his secretary
of state a number of times. Ivanka Trump’s participation in the summit is
already controversial. Hyderabad has forcibly removed thousands of beggars from
the streets, and even jailed many of them, ahead of her visit. In the US,
critics also question her credentials as a promoter of women in business.While
the president touts “made in America” products, his daughter’s own fashions are
manufactured exclusively in overseas factories paying low wages, The Washington

Jaipur: Rajasthan Govt has made singing of national anthem mandatory
in all Govt and Govt-aided hostels in
the state. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Arun Chaturvedi said the
move would instill a "sense of nationalism" among students."Students
will sing 'Jana Gana Mana' in the morning meeting at 7 am. Hostel wardens will
have to be present during such sessions," he said.The order came into
force on Nov.26, celebrated as the Constitution day. There are close to 40,000
students in nearly 800 state-run hostels in Rajasthan.Jaipur Municipal

Salem: The Supreme Court freed Hadiya from the
custody of her parents and allowed her to return to her college in Salem, in
Tamil Nadu, to complete her homoeopathy internship. The court also appointed
the dean of the Shivraj Homoeopathic Medical College as Hadiya's guardian and
granted him liberty to approach it in case of any problem.The Court ordered the
college administration to treat Hadiya like any other student and as per hostel
rules, but remained silent on whether Shafin Jehan, Hadiya’s husband, or her
parents would be allowed to meet her while she completes her studies."I
won't allow Hadiya's husband to meet her. Her parents admitted her here; only
they can meet her," said G Kannan, Principal, Shivraj Homoeopathic Medical
College.The principal said that Hadiya will be going to hostel like any other
student. "She can't go anywhere alone and can do nothing without prior
permission from me," said the principal. "She is still Akhila as per
records. If there is a change in name, it will be done through due

New Delhi: The father of Hadiya today welcomed
the Supreme Court decision allowing her to continue her studies and said he did
not want a terrorist in the family. K.M. Ashokan said his daughter Hadiya, wanted
to go to Syria after converting to Islam but had no idea about what it
entailed.”Hadiya does not have any idea about Syria, where she wanted to go
after converting to Islam,” Ashokan said.”I cannot have a terrorist in the
family,” he added.Asked about his stance on inter-religious marriages, Ashokan
said he believed in one religion and one god.”I was sad that she had to undergo
all these unpleasant experiences because of which her studies were interrupted.
But now I am happy as the court has allowed her to study further,” Ashokan told

it is monitoring the case and so I am not worried about her security,” he

petition challenging appointment of Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as
a special director of the CBI.The apex court had on Nove.24 reserved its order
on the plea that was filed by senior laywer Prashant Bhushan on behalf of NGO
Common Cause. The central Govt had
defended Asthana’s appointment, saying the 56-year-old has had an outstanding
career wherein he supervised over 40 high profile cases like coal scam,
Kingfisher Airlines, AugustaWestland scam, blackmoney and money laundering
cases. Bhushan had claimed Asthana’s appointment to be “illegal” as his name
had surfaced in a diary recovered during a raid conducted by Income Tax dept at

“we are not saying if the officer did something wrong, but this is a question

rounded up during NIA raids earlier this year.JKLF chief Yasin Malik was
arrested by the police and shifted to the Central Jail, Srinagar, in the wake
of the shutdown call and protests.“A blanket ban on political activities,
incarceration of thousands of old, young, women, men specially-abled, ailing
and minors, are actually glaring examples of state terrorism,” said Malik. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat
chairman Syed Ali Geelani, who released pictures of Tihar jail inmates
allegedly beaten up there, condemned the “ill treatment of political
prisoners”.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq demanded that “all political prisoners be
released immediately if New Delhi is sincere about improving the ground
situation in Kashmir”. J&K Jamaat-e-Islami demanded the “unconditional

Human rights outfits hold convention on
Rohingya crisis
Kolkata: 7 human rights organisation held a
convention in Kolkata on Monday to protest against the “atrocities” committed
against Rohingya Muslims and adopted resolutions to protect their rights.Activists
demanded that the “genocide” of Rohingya must be stopped immediately and that
the affected people should be rehabilitated by the Myanmar Govt. They also
demanded action against those responsible for the genocide, besides urging the
central Govt not to send back Rohingya who have entered the country as refugees.
The activists also requested the Centre to put pressure on the Myanmar Govt to
accept Rohingya and provide them citizenship. Human rights activist and
national vice-president of the PUCL Dr Binayak Sen, who was present at the
convention, gave his support to the demands. “We condemn the inhuman atrocities
against Rohingya from our heart. We will try to find solutions to it. On behalf
of PUCL, we will support all the resolutions, which were adopted today,” Sen
said.Activist Bolan Ganguly said: “An anti-Muslim atmosphere has been created
in the world. We have to fight against creation of such an atmosphere. To do
that, we have to create mass awareness on this issue and hit the streets to put
pressure on Myanmar Govt to stop

media campaign to quell fears about new citizens’ register
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the
contentious matter of who could be defined as an “original inhabitant” of Assam
in its new National Register of Citizens, a media campaign to allay fears is
underway in the state. The authorities responsible for updating the register
for the first time since 1951 have started placing advertisements in newspapers
and on social media stating that the updated citizenry list will have “no
categorisation as original inhabitant” or otherwise.The campaign is titled “Our
NRC, Fair NRC”.It says that “all genuine citizens as per date of March 24th,
1971 [midnight]” will find a place in the updated list. According to the terms
of the Assam Accord of 1985, on which the process of updating is based, anyone
who can provide proof that they or their ancestors entered the state before
then would be considered eligible for the list.Officials have also reportedly
printed leaflets in Assamese, Bengali and English and are distributing them to
clear doubts about the process, while some are traveling to “vulnerable areas”
to speak to worried residents.Assam started the process of updating its
National Register of Citizens in 2015, ostensibly to detect and deport illegal
immigrants from Bangladesh. The new list is expected to be ready in the next
few months. The exercise has become controversial with various citizen groups
and Opposition parties alleging that a large number of legitimate Indian
citizens could end up being denied their voting and other rights. Syed Burhanur
Rahman, lawyer representing seven Congress lawmakers who have petitioned the SC
asking it to lay down the “laws and parameters” of who is an original
inhabitant, called the advertisements “a ploy to mislead the public”.He said,
“The state coordinator has already said on record that there is a distinction.
Now that they realise there is an upheaval in the state, they have put out this
ad to pacify people.”Rahman said it was immaterial whether there was a

While Assam eagerly awaits the release of an
updated draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), NHRC has sent a notice to
the state Govt , seeking an explanation over the alleged harassment of people
by the police over verification of identity and nationality.Kismat Ali, 41,
recalls the night of 11 August 2015, when gun-toting cops picked him up from
his hutment in Sonajuli village of the state's Udalguri district. Kismat, who
worked as a truck driver, was taken in a police vehicle as cops rounded up
another D-voter — 'D' stands for 'doubtful' — from Assam, Ashraf Ali. Ashraf,
born in Siwan district of Bihar, moved to Assam with his parents in the 1980s.
Kismat was born in Assam, in the state's Kharupetia town, to a father who had
moved there from UP's Deoria district. It wasn't until their arrest that Kismat
and Ashraf learnt that Election Commission of India marked them as 'D-voters'
since 2006. D-voters lose their citizenship rights and Govt entitlements until
their names aren't confirmed as Indian citizens.The 2 were held as
"foreigners" under an ex-parte judgment and put in detention on 12
August, 2015. They approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court
dismissed their writs. The case went back to the Foreigners' Tribunal, an
exclusive body of the Assam state Govt , which declared them Indian citizens
and set them free — after two years, two months and 17 days in prison. Assam
Police has been on its guard against infiltrators since 1962, when it first set
up a special branch under the 'Prevention of Infiltration of Pakistan' (PIP)
scheme, entrusted with deporting "foreigners" from Bangladesh, then
East Pakistan, living illegally in the state.A sustained movement by AASU and
AAGSP, who conveyed their apprehensions regarding the influx of foreign
nationals into Assam during the 1980s, led to the introduction of Assam Accord
in Aug. 1985. Accord ruled that foreigners who came to Assam after 1 Jan.,
1966, and up to 24 March, 1971, and foreigners who came to Assam after 25
March, 1971, shall continue to be expelled in accordance with the law. This
suspicion regarding infiltrators had put more than 6.2 lakh people under
investigation as "foreigners" until October 2016, parliamentary affairs

Guwahati: In an unusual step, Assam forest dept
officials used elephants to displace squatters during an eviction drive inside
Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary in Guwahati.According to reports, officials claimed
that people were illegally living in a protected forest area.The eviction drive
was carried out on the direction of Gauhati High Court. Armed with the eviction
order issued, police and civil administration entered the three location
Nabajyoti Nagar and Kankan Nagar areas and Yousuf Nagar and demolished about
1,000 bamboo and tin huts and properties belonging to the locals.More than 15
elephants, a few bulldozers, 1,500 police personnel, 300 demolition labourers
and 10 JCBs have also been engaged in the eviction drive.Around 408 houses have
been demolished and the drive would continue on Tuesday too.The situation
turned violent when the residents of Nabajyotinagar argued that they had
legally bought the land and tried to resist the eviction drive.Police resorted
to lathi-charge, burst tear-gas and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd
in which several people including three women were injured. Locals also alleged
that they had not received prior notice about the eviction drives. Meanwhile,
hundreds of people and different social organisations took to the streets
demanding an immediate halt to the eviction drive against indigenous

New Delhi:Gujarat High Court Tuesday dismissed
Delhi-based news portal The Wire’s plea against the gag order issued by a lower
court. BJP president Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah secured the gag order after the
news portal carried an article claimed that his company’s turnover rose 16,000
times in one year after the NDA came to power.The Wire moved the High Court
after the Ahmedabad court issued an ex parte injunction against the news
website, preventing it from publishing any content “directly or indirectly”
about Amit Shah’s son. The portal had then moved the Gujarat High Court, which
on November 20 reserved its judgement.During the hearing in the High Court, Jay
Shah’s counsel had contended people have a “certain perception” about Congress
president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra, and “if you bring me in (the)
company of crooks, it would amount to defamation”.“I am not saying Vadra is a
crook but if you put me in the list, it is defamatory,” senior lawyer S V Raju,
appearing for Jay, argued before Justice J B Pardiwala of Gujarat High Court
during hearing of a petition moved by the Delhi-based website for quashing the
criminal defamation case. Raju mentioned Vadra after The Wire’s counsel, Mihir
Joshi, said that the reporter of the article on Jay Shah had exposed Vadra’s

forced to bury their dead due to economic, caste divide
Cemetery and graveyard – these two words are
enough to identify a person's religion. However, it is hard to distinguish the
religion of someone living in Shiyani village of Sundar Nagar district of Gujarat
through these two words.When Firstpost reached Shiyani village to talk about
the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, one of the complaints of the people of
that village was that they have no cemetery to bury dead bodies. On saying that
one needs a graveyard to bury, 25-year-old Gautam Makivan said, "in our
culture, we bury the Hindus also. But according to our religion, it's called
cemetery and not a graveyard."In most of the villages of the Sundar Nagar
district, Dalits, including people from Valmiki community, are buried. Despite
being a Hindu, their last rites are performed in accordance to Muslim culture.
The difference between burying a Hindu and Muslim is that unlike the Muslims,
Hindu Dalits don't have a tomb.Only the lower class people follow the tradition
of burial in this district. There is no clear reason for this. The founder of
Navsarjan trust, an organisation which works for the Dalits, said "it does
not happen everywhere. However, one reason behind this practice is precaution
from air pollution."One theory is that years ago, the people of this
community started the practice of burying people after their death in a bid to
reduce air pollution. However, there is no proof of this. Second theory is that
the difference between upper and lower castes here was so vast that the lower
castes did not have the freedom to adopt Hindu customs. This difference is
starkly visible even today.That is probably the reason why there's a separate
crematorium for the upper castes in this district. This means, the distinction

ferrying cows, buffaloes and calves fearing attack by cow vigilantes.President of

in Meerut and neighbouring districts on truckers carrying livestock they had
decided not to ferry cattle.More than 10,000 trucks operate in the district and
all are strictly following the decision.The police officer who approached me
offered to provide a constable to escort the vehicle. However, I demanded an
escort vehicle to ensure the safety of the driver during the transportation of
his cows and calf,”Sharma said.After much persuasion, eventually, the cows were
transported to Lucknow after three armed policemen were deployed as escorts, he

laws like those in China are needed to control population of all faiths. Areas

Shahjahanpur: 2 people received bullet
injuries while many others got minor injuries when members of 2 communities
clashed and exchanged gunfire and pelted stones at each other in Tarin Tikli
area here on Monday morning.The clash broke out over a poll-related dispute
between members of both communities — who are said to be supporters of two
leaders of their respective communities contesting municipal elections. However,
police acted swiftly and controlled the situation. They rushed Sanjeev Saxena
and Vishal Kumar, who had received bullet injuries in their legs, to the
district hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable.Meanwhile,
panic gripped the locality and residents preferred staying inside.Police have
booked as many as 8 people, including 3 unidentified men, in this connection,

case was registered against 2 persons and the top offiocers somehow defused the

brother Shashi Chauhan was was sitting at his friend’s house in Nai Basti

TN: Plea against construction works in Jamia
masjid in Salem
Salem: District president of Hindu Munnani, A
Santhosh Kumar, petitioned Salem collector on Monday, urging her to take action
against Jamia Masjid authorities for initiating civil construction activities
without obtaining permission from Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC). Santhosh
Kumar said the Jamia Masjid authorities had recently initiated expansion
activities. "They are increasing the height of 'minar' more than the
prescribed limits that too without obtaining proper permission from SMC
officials," he said. He also alleged that the masjid authorities were
using cone shaped speaker, which was banned by Salem city police in the city
limits. "But, the police are yet to take action against them,"
Santhosh Kumar said.The collector received the petition and forwarded it to SMC
commissioner, R Sadheesh, asking him to look in to the issue at the
earliest.When contacted, one of the trustees of Jamia Masjid said they have
obtained proper permission from the concerned officials and denied any

Can’t direct govt to bring a law on torture:

New Delhi:The Supreme Court today said it
cannot direct the Govt to make a law to
prevent torture and inhuman treatment in custody when the Govt was looking into the issue in “all
seriousness” and had decided to adopt the UN’ convention on torture. A bench
headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra referred to the submissions of Attorney
General K K Venugopal who said the prayer in a plea with regard to framing of a
law to prevent torture and inhuman treatment of individuals in custody was also
a subject matter of discussion in the Law Commission.“The executive is looking
at the issue with all seriousness,” Venugopal told the bench, which also
comprised Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud. The bench was hearing a
PIL filed by senior advocate and ex-law minister Ashwani Kumar, who has sought
directions to frame an effective law on the issue and empower agencies like the
NHRC with necessary enforcement capabilities and mechanisms to implement its

The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a
petition filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, seeking a stay on the release of
the Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmavati' film.The court also took a strong
exception to statements made by persons holding high offices against the film,
saying the remarks were tantamount to pre-judging the movie which is yet to be
certified by the Censor Board. Padmavati shall not be released abroad unless
there is certification by film censor board, said a bench headed by Chief
Justice Dipak Misra.The SC termed as "misconceived", the prayers
sought by Sharma in his fresh petition and said that the court cannot pre-judge
a movie which is yet to be certified by Central Board of Film Certification.

environment and health, a study released in New Delhi on Monday held lifestyle
diseases like obesity, mental health, cancer and heart diseases to count a few,
as the major killers in India.Revealing the links of air pollution with mental
diseases, a report by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) stated that air
pollution is responsible for 30 % of
premature deaths in India while every third child in Delhi has impaired
lungs.“Over 61% of total deaths in India were attributed to lifestyle or
non-communicable diseases (NCDs)... More than 1.73 million new cancer cases
likely to be recorded each year by 2020, air pollution, tobacco, alcohol and

The UN special envoy for Syria says the Govt delegation has not yet confirmed that it will
attend the latest round of UN-mediated talks with the opposition in Geneva.The
eighth round of Geneva talks is supposed to focus on the issue of elections and
a constitution, two of the four so-called baskets of reforms laid out by
the UN

database of companies involved in Israeli settlement activity, as the
Geneva-based body comes under increasing Israeli and US pressure to bury the
list.“Ongoing illegal Israeli settlement activity highlights the urgency of the
publication of a United Nations database of businesses that have enabled or
profited from settlements”, the global rights group said in a statement
published Tuesday.As summarised by HRW, “the database will publicly identify
businesses that contribute to rights abuses by operating in or with settlements
in Occupied Palestinian Territory”.This “will build pressure on businesses to
stop doing business in and with settlements in order to meet their human rights
responsibilities and for countries to respond to the Security Council’s call in
its Resolution 2334 to distinguish between Israeli territory and settlements in
their dealings”.
Hamas will not disarm and calls on Fatah not
to succumb to external pressure
Hamas said that it has never put its weapons
up for negotiation, and stressed that it would never bargain them away for any
political gains. Khalil Al-Hayya of the movement’s Political Bureau sadi that
the arms of the resistance groups are a red line and not a subject for
discussion; nor is the issue of salaries for Govt employees engaged by Hamas while it was in Govt
in Gaza Strip. Palestinian Authority in
Ramallah is refusing to pay the salaries.Al-Hayya also called upon Fatah and
the PA not to succumb to external pressure and damage the reconciliation
process. The deputy head of Hamas in Gaza called upon the Palestinian factions

movement had rushed towards the process as some kind of “concession”. He described

'Egypt Mosque attackers wore military
uniforms'
Cairo: Egypt Mosque attack, which claimed over
300 lives and wounded scores of worshippers on Friday, was carried out by dozens
of men wearing military combat uniforms and armed with automatic machine guns.
25 to 30 attackers arrived in 5 SUVs at the al Rawdah Sufi mosque in Bir
al-Abed on Friday. Some wore masks and at least one was carrying an ISIS flag,
reported CNN, citing the state prosecutor as saying in a statement to the
state-run media outlet.They positioned themselves at the building's entrances
and the front of the mosque shortly before the massive gunfire and loud
explosions rang out.An explosion reportedly took place inside the mosque when
worshippers were carrying out their afternoon prayers. Following the explosion,
gunmen arrived in cars and opened fire at the fleeing crowd.No group has so far

Geneva: A UN women's rights panel called on
Myanmar Tuesday to report within six months on rapes and sexual violence
against Rohingya women and girls by its security forces in northern Rakhine state.
UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) also
asked authorities to provide details on women and girls killed in the violence
since the army crackdown began in late Aug.The campaign, which followed attacks
on police posts by Rohingya insurgents, has driven more than 600,000 Rohingya
to flee to Bangladesh and left their villages burned to the ground.The rare
request for an "exceptional report" from a country was only the
panel's fourth since 1982.Pope Francis met leaders of several faiths in
majority-Buddhist Myanmar on Tuesday, stressing the importance of "unity
