US Secretary Tillerson snubbing Ivanka Trump's
India trip amid tensions: report
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson isn’t
sending a top delegation to accompany Ivanka Trump to a business summit in
India because he doesn’t want to promote her on the world stage, CNN reported.
In her highest-profile international event yet, first daughter is attending 3-day
Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Hyderabad, sponsored by the State Dept and
India. A theme of the summit is female economic empowerment. A senior State
Dept source told CNN that “no one higher than the deputy assistant secretary is
allowed to participate” in the India trip. Tillerson’s staff “won’t send
someone senior because they don’t want to bolster Ivanka,” the source said.
Tillerson has a history of tension with the White House, and this could be the
newest chapter. President Donald Trump has appeared to contradict his secretary
of state a number of times. Ivanka Trump’s participation in the summit is
already controversial. Hyderabad has forcibly removed thousands of beggars from
the streets, and even jailed many of them, ahead of her visit. In the US,
critics also question her credentials as a promoter of women in business. While
the president touts “made in America” products, his daughter’s own fashions are
manufactured exclusively in overseas factories paying low wages, The Washington
Post has reported.A Post investigation also found that her company “lags behind
many in the apparel industry in monitoring the treatment of the largely female
workforce.” huffingtonpost

India’s GDP can grow by $150 billion in 3
years if it halves gender gap in labour force:Ivanka at Hyderabad Summit
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s
daughter and senior adviser to the White House Ivanka Trump on Tuesday praised PM
Narendra Modi for bringing in
transformation change in the country and recognised his efforts in building
India into a thriving economy and a beacon of democracy to the world.“From your
childhood selling tea to your election as India’s PM , you’ve proven that
transformational change is possible,” Ivanka said in her keynote address to the
Global Entrepreneurship Summit, which is being held in India for the first
time.Highlighting India’s battle against poverty, Ivanka said the country had
lifted more than 130 million citizens out of penury.“Through your own
enterprise, entrepreneurship and hard work, the people of India have lifted
more than 130 million citizens out of poverty – a remarkable improvement. It
will continue to grow under the leadership of PM Modi. All of you are helping India’s
middle-class reach its goal of nearly 500 million people by 2030,” Ivanka said.
The US President’s daughter also said the Indian economy could grow by over
$150 billion in the next three years if it was able to close the labour force
gender gap by half.Ivanka, whose clothing business has come under scrutiny for
low wages and unsuitable working conditions, said despite the soaring rate of
female entrepreneurs, women still faced steep obstacles to starting, owning,
and growing their businesses. indianexpress

Rajasthan govt makes national anthem mandatory
in state-run hostels
Jaipur: Rajasthan Govt has made singing of national anthem mandatory
in all Govt and Govt-aided hostels in
the state. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Arun Chaturvedi said the
move would instill a "sense of nationalism" among students."Students
will sing 'Jana Gana Mana' in the morning meeting at 7 am. Hostel wardens will
have to be present during such sessions," he said. The order came into
force on Nov.26, celebrated as the Constitution day. There are close to 40,000
students in nearly 800 state-run hostels in Rajasthan.Jaipur Municipal
Corporation had last month started the daily practice of playing the national
anthem at the start of the day and the national song in the evening. PTI

After Satna, MP Govt wants students across
state to answer roll call with 'Jai Hind'
After implementation in the Satna district in
Oct. this year, the Madhya Pradesh Govt has made it compulsory for students to respond
to their roll call with 'Jai Hind' instead of 'present Sir or Ma'am'.This
decision, Govt has said, is to promote
patriotism among children.Indian Express reports that Madhya Pradesh's school
education minister Vijay Shah said on Sunday in Bhopal, during NCC Day
celebrations, that a circular would be issue today asking all 1.22 lakh Govt schools in the state to implement this rule.In
Sept.,Shah had made the announcement for the move in the Satna district.Indian
Express reported that Shah as saying that present sir/madam did not foster
patriotism among children.Announcing the decision in September, Shah had
said,"I have a military background; my grandfathers have been in the Army.
And whenever they come to meet, they always say 'Jai Hind' which I think is a
way of respecting your nation, and the feeling of love for your country is
shown through his gesture.""I asked them to make students say ' Jai
Hind,' because they are the future of India and they should respect and love
their country; by doing this the love for the nation will increase among
them," Shah had said. The Govt had
planned to implement this rule across the state if it became successful in
Satna. However, he had said that for private schools it would only be a
suggestion, and it would completely be on them to implement it or not. huffingtonpost
I have won battle to get back wife, says
Shefin Jahan
Chennai: “I have won the battle to get back my
wife,” said Hadiya’s husband Shefin Jahan after the Supreme Court order
directed her to return to college to finish her studies, even as the principal
of Sivaraj Homeopathic Medical College in Salem, G Kannan, said they would
welcome Hadiya to institute.Jahan said he wanted to meet his wife at the
earliest. He said he saw her in the court room on Monday after several months,
but “I could not even smile at her as courtroom was crowded”.“There is no
restriction on meeting Hadiya. I am very happy that she has again asserted that
I am her husband. In the last few months, she has been facing torture in her
house and there were attempts to force her to speak against me and Islam. But I
always hoped she would not speak against her own husband,’’ said Jahan. On his
alleged IS links, Jahan said the NIA has been creating a smokescreen. “They
have been raising the baseless allegation from the beginning. I have nothing to
worry about their allegations,’’ said Jahan, who had been employed in the Gulf. indianexpress
Will not allow Hadiya’s husband to meet her, says
Hadiya’s guardian and college principal
Salem: The Supreme Court freed Hadiya from the
custody of her parents and allowed her to return to her college in Salem, in
Tamil Nadu, to complete her homoeopathy internship. The court also appointed
the dean of the Shivraj Homoeopathic Medical College as Hadiya's guardian and
granted him liberty to approach it in case of any problem. The Court ordered the
college administration to treat Hadiya like any other student and as per hostel
rules, but remained silent on whether Shafin Jehan, Hadiya’s husband, or her
parents would be allowed to meet her while she completes her studies."I
won't allow Hadiya's husband to meet her. Her parents admitted her here; only
they can meet her," said G Kannan, Principal, Shivraj Homoeopathic Medical
College. The principal said that Hadiya will be going to hostel like any other
student. "She can't go anywhere alone and can do nothing without prior
permission from me," said the principal. "She is still Akhila as per
records. If there is a change in name, it will be done through due
procedure,"said Kannan. When principal was asked whether Hadiya would be
given a space to pray, he said: "We don't know what she needs". A
re-admission procedure usually takes around 15 days, but in Hadiya's case it
could be faster considering the SC order. CNN-News18

Hadiya's father welcomes SC decision, says he
cannot have 'terrorist' in the family
New Delhi: The father of Hadiya today welcomed
the Supreme Court decision allowing her to continue her studies and said he did
not want a terrorist in the family. K.M. Ashokan said his daughter Hadiya, wanted
to go to Syria after converting to Islam but had no idea about what it
entailed.”Hadiya does not have any idea about Syria, where she wanted to go
after converting to Islam,” Ashokan said.”I cannot have a terrorist in the
family,” he added.Asked about his stance on inter-religious marriages, Ashokan
said he believed in one religion and one god.”I was sad that she had to undergo
all these unpleasant experiences because of which her studies were interrupted.
But now I am happy as the court has allowed her to study further,” Ashokan told
reporters.”I accept the SC's decision. She is under the protection of the SC as
it is monitoring the case and so I am not worried about her security,” he
said.”The SC has not given anyone guardianship, including Shafin Jahan, of my
child,” Ashokan said, adding that only close relatives like him were allowed by
the court. Hadiya today left for Salem under the protection of the Kerala
Police and is expected to reach there by the evening. Asked by the SC bench to
name any nearest relative or acquaintance at Salem to be named as the local
guardian, Hadiya said she only needed her husband in that role. She said her
husband can take care of her expenses of studies and she does not need state's
expenses to pursue her professional course. PTI

SC dismisses plea challenging Asthana’s
appointment as CBI spl director
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed the
petition challenging appointment of Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as
a special director of the CBI.The apex court had on Nove.24 reserved its order
on the plea that was filed by senior laywer Prashant Bhushan on behalf of NGO
Common Cause. The central Govt had
defended Asthana’s appointment, saying the 56-year-old has had an outstanding
career wherein he supervised over 40 high profile cases like coal scam,
Kingfisher Airlines, AugustaWestland scam, blackmoney and money laundering
cases. Bhushan had claimed Asthana’s appointment to be “illegal” as his name
had surfaced in a diary recovered during a raid conducted by Income Tax dept at
the offices and other premises of company Sterling Biotech Ltd. Alleging that
Asthana had close relations with the firm that was under the lens, he contended
“we are not saying if the officer did something wrong, but this is a question
of institutional integrity which was underlined by the SC in the case of Chief
Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas”. indianexpress
Interlocutor Sharma in Srinagar amid shutdown
call
As Govt of India special representative on J&K
Dineshwar Sharma arrived in Srinagar on Monday, separatists pitched for the
release of political prisoners “to prove sincerity towards creating a conducive
atmosphere.”Separatists organised a shutdown on Monday against the alleged
“maltreatment of political prisoners in jails”, including second-rung leaders
rounded up during NIA raids earlier this year.JKLF chief Yasin Malik was
arrested by the police and shifted to the Central Jail, Srinagar, in the wake
of the shutdown call and protests.“A blanket ban on political activities,
incarceration of thousands of old, young, women, men specially-abled, ailing
and minors, are actually glaring examples of state terrorism,” said Malik. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat
chairman Syed Ali Geelani, who released pictures of Tihar jail inmates
allegedly beaten up there, condemned the “ill treatment of political
prisoners”.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq demanded that “all political prisoners be
released immediately if New Delhi is sincere about improving the ground
situation in Kashmir”. J&K Jamaat-e-Islami demanded the “unconditional
release of all political prisoners”.“The international and local human rights
bodies should look into the deplorable conditions of the inmates. Thousands of
innocent Kashmiris are languishing in jails only for the reason that they wish
a resolution of the Kashmir issue,” said a Jamaat spokesman. Separatists’
shutdown and statements on the release of political prisoners coincided with
Sharma’s visit to the Valley.A day after visiting volatile Pulwama in south
Kashmir, Sharma met 30 delegations in Srinagar as an effort to continue the
dialogue process, devoid of the participation of separatists so far.Among those
who met him were students of Kashmir University, flood victims, employees of
Radio Kashmir, etc. Sources said the delegates raised “micro issues” and
“stressed on the need to address the political aspect of the Kashmir problem

Assam:A
media campaign to quell fears about new citizens’ register
As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the
contentious matter of who could be defined as an “original inhabitant” of Assam
in its new National Register of Citizens, a media campaign to allay fears is
underway in the state. The authorities responsible for updating the register
for the first time since 1951 have started placing advertisements in newspapers
and on social media stating that the updated citizenry list will have “no
categorisation as original inhabitant” or otherwise. The campaign is titled “Our
NRC, Fair NRC”.It says that “all genuine citizens as per date of March 24th,
1971 [midnight]” will find a place in the updated list. According to the terms
of the Assam Accord of 1985, on which the process of updating is based, anyone
who can provide proof that they or their ancestors entered the state before
then would be considered eligible for the list.Officials have also reportedly
printed leaflets in Assamese, Bengali and English and are distributing them to
clear doubts about the process, while some are traveling to “vulnerable areas”
to speak to worried residents.Assam started the process of updating its
National Register of Citizens in 2015, ostensibly to detect and deport illegal
immigrants from Bangladesh. The new list is expected to be ready in the next
few months. The exercise has become controversial with various citizen groups
and Opposition parties alleging that a large number of legitimate Indian
citizens could end up being denied their voting and other rights. Syed Burhanur
Rahman, lawyer representing seven Congress lawmakers who have petitioned the SC
asking it to lay down the “laws and parameters” of who is an original
inhabitant, called the advertisements “a ploy to mislead the public”.He said,
“The state coordinator has already said on record that there is a distinction.
Now that they realise there is an upheaval in the state, they have put out this
ad to pacify people.”Rahman said it was immaterial whether there was a
classification in the draft or final list as people had already been
arbitrarily segregated on the basis of who is an original inhabitant. scroll
Assam: State's methods of identifying
foreigners on shaky ground as locals complain of harassment
While Assam eagerly awaits the release of an
updated draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), NHRC has sent a notice to
the state Govt , seeking an explanation over the alleged harassment of people
by the police over verification of identity and nationality.Kismat Ali, 41,
recalls the night of 11 August 2015, when gun-toting cops picked him up from
his hutment in Sonajuli village of the state's Udalguri district. Kismat, who
worked as a truck driver, was taken in a police vehicle as cops rounded up
another D-voter — 'D' stands for 'doubtful' — from Assam, Ashraf Ali. Ashraf,
born in Siwan district of Bihar, moved to Assam with his parents in the 1980s.
Kismat was born in Assam, in the state's Kharupetia town, to a father who had
moved there from UP's Deoria district. It wasn't until their arrest that Kismat
and Ashraf learnt that Election Commission of India marked them as 'D-voters'
since 2006. D-voters lose their citizenship rights and Govt entitlements until
their names aren't confirmed as Indian citizens. The 2 were held as
"foreigners" under an ex-parte judgment and put in detention on 12
August, 2015. They approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court
dismissed their writs. The case went back to the Foreigners' Tribunal, an
exclusive body of the Assam state Govt , which declared them Indian citizens
and set them free — after two years, two months and 17 days in prison. Assam
Police has been on its guard against infiltrators since 1962, when it first set
up a special branch under the 'Prevention of Infiltration of Pakistan' (PIP)
scheme, entrusted with deporting "foreigners" from Bangladesh, then
East Pakistan, living illegally in the state.A sustained movement by AASU and
AAGSP, who conveyed their apprehensions regarding the influx of foreign
nationals into Assam during the 1980s, led to the introduction of Assam Accord
in Aug. 1985. Accord ruled that foreigners who came to Assam after 1 Jan.,
1966, and up to 24 March, 1971, and foreigners who came to Assam after 25
March, 1971, shall continue to be expelled in accordance with the law. This
suspicion regarding infiltrators had put more than 6.2 lakh people under
investigation as "foreigners" until October 2016, parliamentary affairs
minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly earlier this year. Of these,
more than 2 lakh cases were still pending with the tribunals, he had said. Chandrani

Gujarat HC rejects The Wire’s plea against gag
order over Jay Shah’s article
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/the-wire-jay-shah-gujarat-high-court-defamation-case-4958187/
New Delhi:Gujarat High Court Tuesday dismissed
Delhi-based news portal The Wire’s plea against the gag order issued by a lower
court. BJP president Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah secured the gag order after the
news portal carried an article claimed that his company’s turnover rose 16,000
times in one year after the NDA came to power. The Wire moved the High Court
after the Ahmedabad court issued an ex parte injunction against the news
website, preventing it from publishing any content “directly or indirectly”
about Amit Shah’s son. The portal had then moved the Gujarat High Court, which
on November 20 reserved its judgement.During the hearing in the High Court, Jay
Shah’s counsel had contended people have a “certain perception” about Congress
president Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra, and “if you bring me in (the)
company of crooks, it would amount to defamation”.“I am not saying Vadra is a
crook but if you put me in the list, it is defamatory,” senior lawyer S V Raju,
appearing for Jay, argued before Justice J B Pardiwala of Gujarat High Court
during hearing of a petition moved by the Delhi-based website for quashing the
criminal defamation case. Raju mentioned Vadra after The Wire’s counsel, Mihir
Joshi, said that the reporter of the article on Jay Shah had exposed Vadra’s
land dealings earlier. indianexpress
Gujarat Election: Hindu Dalits in Shiyani
forced to bury their dead due to economic, caste divide
Cemetery and graveyard – these two words are
enough to identify a person's religion. However, it is hard to distinguish the
religion of someone living in Shiyani village of Sundar Nagar district of Gujarat
through these two words. When Firstpost reached Shiyani village to talk about
the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, one of the complaints of the people of
that village was that they have no cemetery to bury dead bodies. On saying that
one needs a graveyard to bury, 25-year-old Gautam Makivan said, "in our
culture, we bury the Hindus also. But according to our religion, it's called
cemetery and not a graveyard."In most of the villages of the Sundar Nagar
district, Dalits, including people from Valmiki community, are buried. Despite
being a Hindu, their last rites are performed in accordance to Muslim culture.
The difference between burying a Hindu and Muslim is that unlike the Muslims,
Hindu Dalits don't have a tomb.Only the lower class people follow the tradition
of burial in this district. There is no clear reason for this. The founder of
Navsarjan trust, an organisation which works for the Dalits, said "it does
not happen everywhere. However, one reason behind this practice is precaution
from air pollution."One theory is that years ago, the people of this
community started the practice of burying people after their death in a bid to
reduce air pollution. However, there is no proof of this. Second theory is that
the difference between upper and lower castes here was so vast that the lower
castes did not have the freedom to adopt Hindu customs. This difference is
starkly visible even today. That is probably the reason why there's a separate
crematorium for the upper castes in this district. This means, the distinction
of untouchables remains even after death.Firstpost
Fear of gau rakshaks forces truckers in Meerut

decided not to ferry cattle.More than 10,000 trucks operate in the district and
all are strictly following the decision. The police officer who approached me
offered to provide a constable to escort the vehicle. However, I demanded an

his cows and calf,”Sharma said. After much persuasion, eventually, the cows were
transported to Lucknow after three armed policemen were deployed as escorts, he
said.“Truckers are so scared of cow vigilantes that they even refuse to transport
dead animals,” he added.About a fortnight ago, city transporters had refused to

Uniform code for India, gun for every Indian:Kashi
seer
Udupi: On the last day of Dharma Sansad, Kashi
Sumeru seer Narendranand Giri said it's time uniform civil code was implemented
in the country and every Indian possessed a licenced gun to fight terror
attacks and social evils."Uniform Civil Code should be implemented in our
country to control population. The minority community is allowed to marry four
times and give birth to 20 children. There should be a law to stop this. Strict
laws like those in China are needed to control population of all faiths. Areas
where Hindu population has plummeted have seen rise in violence," he
said.Taking a dig at triple talaq, seer said, "What kind of custom is this
which allows a man to marry and divorce according to his wishes. Women are
oppressed in Islam. The practice should stop."He also said that every
Indian must have a licenced gun for self-defence in the wake of increase in
terror-related violence and social evils. "In India, instances of violence
and terror attack are increasing with soldiers, saints and mediapersons as
victims. Every Indian should have a weapon or a licenced to fight such attacks,"
said Narendranand Giri."You have a mobile phone worth Rs 50,000, but not

seriousness” and had decided to adopt the UN’ convention on torture. A bench
headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra referred to the submissions of Attorney
General K K Venugopal who said the prayer in a plea with regard to framing of a

Judge Loya's 'Suspicious' Death: Young
Advocate questions the silence of Judiciary, Bar Association, Media
New Delhi: Questioning the silence of
judiciary and Bar Association of India on the reported ‘suspicious’ death of
CBI Special Judge Brijmohan H. Loya, a young advocate Dushyant addressing a
press conference here at Press Club of India, on Monday, asked whether
judiciary is “frightened”. Surprising over "almost no coverage" of
the matter by the mainstream media, Adv. Dushyant demanded a high level
judicial probe. “I am personally ashamed over the silence and no response of
Bar Association on this. On constitution day even Chief Justice Dipak Misra did
not speak up. Judiciary itself takes suo moto in even small matters. Is
judiciary also frightened like media?” Adv. Dushyant questioned.Earlier, he
said that it seems media is so scared or its priority is not to focus on major
issues.Adv. Dushyant shockingly said: “NDTV is the only channel which covered
this matter. Either the entire media is so scared or for media Padmavati is
more important than such a death of a judge. In both circumstances the country
is in grave crises. The main essence of reporting is truth of power.”

a movie which is yet to be certified by Central Board of Film Certification.

Ex-Mossad chief describes Saudi as ‘lagging
behind’ in development
Former Mossad Chief Gad Shimron has said that
Israel is a developed country, while Saudi Arabia is a country “lagging behind”
in terms of development, Shehab news agency reported. “Foreigners control the
Saudi economy,” Shimron said. “Saudi damaged many of the files it was involved
in: the Syrian file as it supported the opposition; the Yemeni file; and the
economic domination of the Lebanese file. The Kingdom is a big story of
failure.”The ex-spymaster pointed out that today “nobody” speaks about the
Palestinian cause in Saudi Arabia. “Today, there is a common Satan. It makes a
common interest between Israel and Saudi. When the enemy is common, we put our
hands together and work together.”He added: “For the first time, the borders with
the Islamic countries are clear against Iran and the Shia. When Israel stands
with the Sunni countries, it is ready to form an alliance with them based on
the proverb saying: ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’.”However, he noted
that the current alliance between Israel and the Arab states is limited to
words alone. middleeastmonitor

settlement-linked companies; middleeastmonitor

profited from settlements”, the global rights group said in a statement
published Tuesday. As summarised by HRW, “the database will publicly identify
businesses that contribute to rights abuses by operating in or with settlements
in Occupied Palestinian Territory”.This “will build pressure on businesses to
stop doing business in and with settlements in order to meet their human rights
responsibilities and for countries to respond to the Security Council’s call in
its Resolution 2334 to distinguish between Israeli territory and settlements in
their dealings”.

UN panel seeks report from Myanmar on rapes,
deaths of Rohingya women
Geneva: A UN women's rights panel called on
Myanmar Tuesday to report within six months on rapes and sexual violence
against Rohingya women and girls by its security forces in northern Rakhine state.
UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) also
asked authorities to provide details on women and girls killed in the violence
since the army crackdown began in late Aug.The campaign, which followed attacks
on police posts by Rohingya insurgents, has driven more than 600,000 Rohingya
to flee to Bangladesh and left their villages burned to the ground. The rare
request for an "exceptional report" from a country was only the
panel's fourth since 1982.Pope Francis met leaders of several faiths in
majority-Buddhist Myanmar on Tuesday, stressing the importance of "unity
in diversity" but making no mention of the minority Muslim Rohingya on his
first day of a visit. He later said in a speech that civil conflict and hostilities
there had "lasted all too long and created deep divisions", but again
did not refer to the Rohingya. The U.N. watchdog panel, composed of 23
independent experts, set a 6-month deadline for the Govt to submit the report to U.N. Secretary-General
